    Currently fitting an M96 engine into a '73 Porsche 914 meaning, I won't need power steering. You just saved me the work of measuring the belt. Not a hard job but it does save time which is always good. I found your other videos useful and intersting as well as I also own an '03 C4S. Great video! Sub'd! Cheers from Puerto Rico.

    That is fantastic Martin. I have added this to my list of annual improvements. Having completed it do you think there may be a more "discreet" location to reduce intrusion into the luggage bay? I do road trips as well as daily driving (shopping..).
    Dumb question, why connect to the alternator warning light? PS failure warning? I have a fixed wing so could use that "redundant" light?

    Great video Martin! One question I do have though is why must one of the signal wires go to the alternator warning light? And a follow-up to that is, what should I put that to if I don't have an alternator warning light in my custom application?

      The pump draws a lot of current. If you were to run it for extended periods without the alternator charging you would end up with a flat battery in no time.You could just put it to a switch or have it run whenever the ignition is on.

    Awesome job Martin! I have been wanting to do this modification for a while and I knew there was a cheaper PS electric pump vs the cup car. Thanks for sharing.

      Yes, it is only the power steering which is removed.

    Hello Martin I am just going to undertake the TRW steering pump conversion, If I send a copy of the parts list to Earle’s is this everything Hose wise I require & dose it include the two fittings which go in to the Rack it’s self ? Great Video

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fittings which go in to the rack itself are the rebel racing ones mentioned on the first page of the parts list. Glad it was helpful.

    Excellent job. What is a power gain you reckon? I guess this and getting rid of a/c compressor (or electrifying it) it’s the most efficient way to get some extra BHP without doing anything major to your engine. Regards !

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt it is a lot. It does move some weight from high up at the rear to low down at the front and makes engine removal and replacement a little easier. Cheaper than replacing the pipes to the rack if needed!! In terms of power, every little helps.

      @@martinhill5770 It got me thinking, Guntherworks with their reimagined 993 built clam +/- 20bhp gain after going electric with power steering and a/c. It would be interesting having your 996 put on the dyno. Thanks for your reply, all the best

      @@t.s.9592 20hp, that is about 15kW. If the power steering and AC were using that much power they would be generating massive amounts of heat. I don't believe the numbers.

      @@t.s.9592 Nice video,thanks;
      The point here if to GET RID of those expensive and cumbersome parts, pump,lines etc, **NOT** gain any Hp;
      Let's not think that electric P/S runs for free; at the usual RPM, it uses the SAME power as hydraulic, if not more,because now there are 2 elements,a pump and an electric motor that did not exist before; the difference now is that the power comes from the alternator belt (NOT the battery, this one just RECEIVES what the Alt.provides) ,instead of the P/S belt; the only way to gain 1 (ONE) Hp (note that some hydr pump setups may consume around 3 hp at 8000 RPM) is to NOT have P/S, with you providing the torque through... the food you eat.
      The 40 Amps the pump consumes at most,with the car stopped ( 5 to 10 amps, if the car is moving along) times the 12 volts is 480 watts, or 0.6 or 0.7 Hp.
      The A/C consumes quite a bit, but it does not consume anything if you don't turn it on; lots of ECUs are factory programmed to do a very useful thing that is to turn the A/C off when you floor the pedal, or at quite high speeds, so that you gain those 5 or 6 HP,for overtaking another car,for instance,avoiding that you'd have to do it manually.

    Interested to know if the conversion had any effect on the handling feel of the car?

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know. I converted it from 4wd to 2wd and changed all of the suspension at the same time, I also fitted different wheels and tyres and changed the steering wheel. I certainly all feels fine though, not really different to my other 996s which have the standard setup still.

    What is the benefit of doing this to a road car, where is your gararge may I ask?

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am based near Nottingham, England. On a road car, only benefit would be if you needed new power steering lines as they are crazy money. For a track car it will reduce loses from the engine and improve weight distribution.

    Good morning Martin back in the summer you very kindly sent me some information about the hose fittings on the power steering conversion, I have now sourced all the part other than the fittings to the rack it’s self, Rebel Racing was suggested for them, can you please confirm that they are in the USA, it’s the only one i can find or is there some were in the UK.
    Many thanks Mark

    Have you driven the car yet? How is the feel and feedback from the steering vs stock?

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't driven it a lot yet, but since all of the suspension has changed, including uprights and all arms, and the wheels and tyres are different, as is the steering wheel, it is hard to say if this makes any difference to the feel. I certainly can't say that it does.

    Great video. I'm in the process of installing this in my Cayman-S track car. Question about the wiring: I understand the 2 "activation" wires are to prevent the pump from running down the battery when the ignition is on but the engine is not running. But why are there two separate activation wires -- one to "Ignition-On" and one to "Alternator-Running"? The Ignition-On signal seems redundant, since if the Alternator is running, the ignition must be on.

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly... No idea. I found some wiring instructions and it was easy to copy them. But in theory yes, you could just run both to the alternator warning.

    Hi thank you for a great video. I wanted to fit this to a Vivaro and was wondering if it’s enough just to wire in the ignition live along with the constant live and earth too? Thanks.

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do, the only issue is that it would operate whenever the ignition is turned on, which could be useful, but could also flatten your battery very quickly.

  • @PerformaIT

    Is the benefit here stopping the power steering overheating on track with constant high rpm driving the stock pump on the engine or are there other reasons too?

    • @martinhill5770
      @martinhill5770  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fewer parts to go wrong, no expensive PS pipes to replace, lower drag on the engine, consistent load on the engine, weight moved from rear to front, easier for removing/refitting engine, and no problems with overheating at high RPM. You do lose some space in the luggage compartment though.
