  • In This video I show you what you need to be able to install a Volvo electric power steering pump into your car. I fabricate my own bracket to fit and make a remote reservoir system that you can copy to make your life easier. I also go over all the fittings you need, the cars that this pump came out of and any other questions you might have about the pump. Also I take it for a test drive so you can see how it feels.
    I hope this can help you save some research and time from searching forums and FB groups FOR HOURS AND HOURS!!!
    If you have any questions PLEASE ASK ME IN THE COMMENTS! I will respond!

    Same pumps with different variations of connectors and reservoirs in the Focus, Transit, C Max, Volvo and several others in Fords plus some True electric PS in other brands also that just ties into the steering shaft under the dash.
    P.S at full lock and relief open the highest amperage ive seen is around 65A max on the 3-4 we have tested.

    • @iamchazhaynes7074
      @iamchazhaynes7074  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Man I love your comments cause I always end up learning something but now I wish I would have looked at the other styles to see if a different one worked better! ohhh so the 80 amp breaker really does have a purpose I knew it wasn't right when I was hearing guys say that they were using 40 amp fuses.

    • @young11984
      @young11984 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iamchazhaynes7074 if its a time delay fuse that allows slightly more amps for brief intervals they will be fine, we were pegging the wheel against the lock without the car running so battery voltage was at or slightly below 12v. As voltage drops amps go up so in reality as the car is running at 13.7-14.2V their 40A may be close to the edge but we use dual max 40A fuses for on track use and single 60 for a street car that wont see hard lock or hard cornering/higher pressure demands like road course, slalom or drift use would cause

    • @iamchazhaynes7074
      @iamchazhaynes7074  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good to know! Hmm I might consider the 60 then because this car wil not see much hard cornering I do live in a canyon area but I still doubt it’ll be that bad 😂 great Info I’m still trying to do my best to learn electrical with amp draw etc so I really appreciate the comments!

    • @Ryukachoo

      Random question since you've tested a lot of them, which version was the quietest? Also do they tend to generate a lot of heat internally and don't want to be hot?
      I'm doing an EV conversion and need something as quiet as possible, and then I'll throw a noise damping box over it to hopefully get it below 50 decibels or so, but I'm worried that box will cause it to overheat

    • @young11984
      @young11984 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ryukachoo all EVs have electric PS anyway, there are several ways they can be PWMd and will only speed up when turning the wheel at low speeds and slow down at high vehicle speeds as stock ones do.
      Not sure where you want read the noise from, are you talking about 50db a foot from the pump with no other noise around or from inside the car? If mounted on stock insulated mounts you might hear it if its straight wired to run all time the switch is on with full speed but as soon as you move you wont. Plus im sure its not a pump of any brand that will be below 50db since a normal conversation is around 70-75db and road/wind noise in a Tesla is 85-90db.
      As far as heat goes that depends on demand, if you are running it in an Auto Cross course then the fluid temp will get hot but normal driving mostly straight it shouldnt ever be an issue and if so a small in line PS cooler is dirt cheap and sufficient for my road course car that is hard on the pump with 10” wide slicks and hard turning.
      I will be using the C Max pump on my 65 F100 and will be rigid mounted to the frame just below my feet under the cab with a remote reservoir beside the radiator with an 3/4” aluminum tube to connect them, this will provide more fluid capacity and the aluminum tube will provide fluid cooling while moving since its a heat sink anyway
      Hope this helps and good luck on your EV

    Great video. From my research, these pumps will run in “limp mode” without a CAN signal, which is supposedly 70% duty cycle. That would likely explain the extra effort at low speed and improved feel at speed. There is a guy out of Canada who makes controllers for a lot of these pumps so you can control pump speed according to vehicle speed or other inputs. I’m going to give one of his controllers a try.
    I scored 3 pumps from Mazda 3’s and one from a 2016 Altima today at the junkyard so I have some options for mockups. The Nissan pump reservoir is odd because it mounts on a goofy angle. Pumps from S40’s are all picked from my local yards already, but the Mazda 3 pumps are a dime-a-dozen.
    Take all my info with a grain of salt because I haven’t done this swap yet.

      Sorry I just saw this!
      But a couple reasons is it has a more positive feeling in the steering wheel also it makes room in the engine compartment if you need it for turbo piping or whatever. And if your engine dies you can still have power steering with key on 👍🏻 some guys used it for drifting but said it couldn’t keep up after a while almost all the coyote swap foxbody guys use this mod for space purposes 😁

      @iamchazhaynes7074  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      haha sounds like you've read exactly the same articles I've been reading. This is the conclusion I have came up with is that the CHF 202 meant for the pump with a touch of bars leaks power steering fix is the best way. After talking to someone that installs these in custom Lincoln continentals he told me that the pump will force to much pressure with the old power steering fluid and the CHF will actually allow the pump to run cooler and not force to much pressure into the rack keeping the rack intact longer and the pump alive longer. He said the extra pressure that the old PS fluid causes wears out the pump and wears out the rack in a matter of 4-6 months. So that is how I will be running the system from now on lol.

    Add one Arduino + GPS module with CAN module and connect it with the fuel pump, you'll be able to control the power of the pump, since the pump is in "emergency mode" and it only outputs 60% of its power.

    • @jjbc5059
      @jjbc5059 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ayeitme6773 The GPS version can control the power depending on the speed more efficiently and secure. Example: While you're driving fast the steering wheel get harder than if you're trying to park. Also, if you just connect 4 wires and not the CAN BUS, the pump only works about 60% of total power all the time since it stays in "emergency mode".
      With Arduino, you can recreate the same stuff as the GPS module sold on eBay and many other pages, but also you can create custom modes for parking, racing, city, drifting, auto mode (soft on low speed and hard on high speeds), you can determinate a "circuit zone" where steering wheel works in a custom mode automatically when you get enter that zone with your car, and so on.
