Prey is so underrated. I tried it out a few months ago on game pass and it was one of the most exciting, interesting games I've ever played. Did not like the ending at all, but it was such a different experience and so cool.

After I beat it a couple of times I was in that mood that I wish there was more and when I seen it had the dlc Moon I watched some yt vids on it to see if I would like it. It didn't seem I would so I held off on it until it was on sale. One of the best purchases I ever made. I didn't buy the new god of war because of the change, I ended up giving it a chance thru redbox and well i ended up owing $60 to redbox because I kept the game and 100 percented it and is one of my favorite games ever
The point about how it feels like the creator of God of war wanted the feel of game to grow up is interesting. Looking back, that makes a lot of sense as one cannot run away from their past. If Kratos had remained an overly angry person in the new game then he would have learned nothing from it.
I was fully expecting Assassin's Creed Black Flag to be on this list. We all turned up for a typical AC adventure and instead got a pirate game. Its probably my favourite in the entire series of AC games, and I know others feel the same, but that was a pretty risky switch up
It isn't my favourite AC game (Revelations is), but by god is it the one AC game that I keep coming back to. The shanties, the ship combat and the smooth AC combat that ubisoft had refined over many games. It is by far one of the best Pirate game out there.
I LOVE how they changed FFVII's story in the remake. It means that the original remains essential to understanding the overall story... innovation while maintaining the relevance of the past. Beautiful.
I'd say gta going from top down to third person was a huge risk. Both from a tech standpoint and publicly. Violence in video games was a huge topic then. And gta 3 made it much more personal Violence.
@@thedarkemissary He's not wrong though. It definitely wasn't risky in terms of "will fans like this" but it was risky because of the freedom of over the top violence and GTAIII did have a lot of controversity around it at the time when it came out. Also Manhunt came out later.
Back in 2018 I was in Oregon during the summer staying with my grandparents and they saw a help wanted poster on their community board next to their mailboxes. So I went and helped this old lady with gardening for about 2 or 3 days and I was paid enough money to go get a game and I went to the mall and picked up God of war. I had heard of the god of war series, but I was always to poor to afford a ps3 so 2018 was my first time playing it. And I loved it so much i went back and played god of war 3 remastered on the ps4.
Platformers were way too common back in the day. I was happy when Metroid turned into a first-person-shooter. It was so much better than platforming and side-scrolling. It felt new and different, which made me love Metroid Prime even more.
I remember starting God of War and getting bored in the first stage because it wasn't what I was expecting. Then I pushed through to see if it got better and as soon as it got to the lake and the real game opened up I was hopelessly addicted. It was like my favorite types of Zelda games. Just endless things to explore and blocked paths that would open up when you earned a new gadget. Fantastic game.
I want a RE game where you start with the fully upgraded weapons and by the end you're scraping by on low ammo and maybe only 1 maxed out weapon- at least for a secret mode.
Making the most recent Gears of War into a more open world experience was quite a big change for the franchise at least for me. In my opinion I don't think the open world and equipment upgrade system works for Gears of War. The more linear system they had in previous games works much better for Gears of War but that's just my opinion.
I'm a huge FF7 fan, as a westerner I absorbed as much of the compilation as I could, so like half. I dont hate the remake, it has a lot of greatness, but I am over all disappointed. I wanted a remake, not a sequel, or parallel thing. I was hoping they would iron out the lore, cut what didnt work, and have a completed definitive FF7, but were getting some weird, decade long(?) Campain designed for money (my guess) not 'art or fans'. I'll still play it in the future, and I love Square-Enix, but they've burned me soooooo often. There more like an ex I'll hook up with for fun occasionally, but i just cant take seriously anymore. Tetsuya Nomura seems to be losing his mind to...something.
the downhill of RE series started in RE4 when it became action focus, it only became a horror survival anymore is because the game now keeps spawning hordes of enemies to you, wasting ammo and health in useless fights; unlike the older ones where you can just run around them, the gunpowder system and limited ink ribbon with the haunting bgms, that is survival horror where every bullet counts.
Yep. RE4 was a great 3rd person shooter game that helped advance the shooter genere at large, but it was a *bad* survival horror game as to what it was originally advertised to be. Also, Ashley Graham was a major POS. That's the main reason why it's overrated.
one of my favorite games that used the Mario franchise was Super Mario RPG on SNES. Squaresoft making a Mario game was already exciting, and it is executed flawlessly. It even introduced a wave of new players into the RPG genre, myself included.
Probably not risky, more just progression, but Rockstar's choice to make GTA 3D blew my mind when it happened, I was a kid and was just in awe at what they had just pulled off
Ahhh MGS 2, subverting expectations pissed me off but then the meta narrative clicks into gear and the switch played perfectly into a story way ahead of its time and is still relevant to this day. Second favorite music game, right behind 3.
For FF7 Remake; just wanna say I have complete faith in Square for parts 2 and beyond. The Intermission DLC was great and it set up Part 2 very well. Very excited
I'm glad the creator did it, in a interview he said in the og he wanted us to even go to space but dud to technical limitations at the time the og FF7 came out he was unable to.
This gets overlooked so much and definitely underappreciated in my opinion. I'll always be amazed with how the devs stuck to the one shot for the entire game. Just technially incredible in every aspect.
Will you please show Metro some love? Please make a video on the franchise tell us the details you can gather of the news surrounding a forth entry. I ask because we watch a lot of gaming channels and you are our favorite hands down.
I think IOI did how they did with Hitman on purpose from the newest trilogy. The first one was pretty standard, second was a leaning into story quite a bit more, and third pulled it all together. Its like they were buttering people up to it.
@@KingofGames231 Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and FF6 (SNES 3) have a 3 way tie for my all time favorites. The SNES ended up with an amazing lineup of RPGs over the years.
God of War is the third act of a teather or opera play. It's the last step of the archetype of Kratos. The burden, the killing, hate and anger against the gods has settled up on him and you feel that weight. It has to be slow because it is a deep reflection of all his actions in the past. Spoiler alert! (three years later duh) At the end of the game, when he had to go back to take the Blades of Chaos was so damn overwhelming. I cried when I saw what he had to do, almost defeated taking those blades again and Athena appearing out of nowhere to remember him his past. He is just trying to die in peace and leave his son to the world. The game has its problem and it's not perfect (the camera is really messy and the cliffhanger at the end is infuriating), but the story and the perspective it takes for its characters in relation to the gameplay desitions makes it a masterpiece.
Story telling and presentation are really well done. Gameplay really could've stayed in the oven for a while longer though. It feels like it's having an identical crisis with wanting to be Dark Souls, Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider and a looter shooter. I really hope they iron it out and make it a shitton more focused in the sequel.
Mafia 3. The first two mafia games were linear told stories following Italian Americans in organized crime world. The third game far as an African-American taking down the Italian mob. all three games are really fun and good stories, but the third is very different in overall theme, and level design plays extremely different. Personally I still enjoyed the third game but a lot of people didn’t
It didn’t really pay off tho, the whole fanbase was divided were just mentioning tlou2 has a high chance of starting a comment war over the game. And there wasn’t that much risk anyway, the gameplay is still the same.
It won most GOTY awards as well. Very well deserved. Phenomenal game. Especially the gameplay that improved a lot over the previous game. I'm going to play it again when I get a PS5.
I just played GOW for the 1st time this month (out of gaming for 8 years) and it was refreshing, I loved it. On my 2nd playthrough now. I was a fan of the others as well
Jak and Daxter series went from a kids platformer/collectathon to more open gta styled type of missions and gave Jak guns, a voice, darker tones, maybe a bit edgy too, vehicles. Huge change of pace from their first game and even prior history of games. I remember at the time it being pretty divisive, but many people now definitely look back fondly.
Metro should have been on this list for a plethora of reasons. They took a huge risk with 2033 by attempting to top S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Last Light was a huge risk releasing alongside the most popular cookie cutter shooters of the time. They also made an in-depth, believable, atmospheric AAA game doing things no other games would whilst dealing with numerous excessive power outages and harsh conditions. Of course, Exodus took a major risk for going open-world style which even Jake B. himself said was executed successfully. They made a huge move by changing the linear style of the first two games and risked losing fans!
Very low-key, but Fire Emblem Awakening. This game was, I feel, the one that tried to appeal to a wider audience of people, while also acting as a homage to pretty much every game in the series prior, taking elements from all the games to make what was, almost, the final game in the series. But the game did so well that it saved the franchise, introduced tons of new people to the game and the tactical RPG genre as a whole, and allowed us to keep getting new Fire Emblem games to this day! ...and then they got a little cocky with Fates and decided to kind of nosedive, but let's just not think about that
Truly. Part 1 was my favorite game of all time, but then part 2 comes in and is now my favorite piece of media ever made. I wonder where part 3 will go?
Monster Hunter World going full open map and ditching it's old roots. It's move back from handheld devices to the big system was a huge jump for them and it paid off with the most well received game in the series thus far
Breath of the Wild I think can be considered a pretty big risk, there was never an open world zelda before it and the exclusion of huge dungeons was easily a wager in of itself, but I think most can agree it succeeded and are excited to see what Breath of the Wild 2 will bring.
Call me crazy but I wanted GOW to keep that style, well at this point I just hope they remake I and II with current tech from ground up. I replayed GOW II countless times. but the new one only 2 times (story wise).
well i was thinking about final fantasy because they changed from a turn based combat to all kinda stuff they have online rpg and like 12and 15 is different and honestly after 10 everything gets different but they all keep being great even the last one strangers of paradise even if i personally dont like it alot people do,and its a way different way of playing
For a moment having a BattleTech game over a new MechWarrior game was a great revival of the franchise and got so many more people into the tabletop war game
I hoped last of us 2 to be in this list ,they took the most realistic way for games. like not all the things in real life has a happy ending especially in a apocalyptic zombie game
@@jasonalv7436 The way how he died was unexpected you are meant to hate it in order to be on board with ellie's journey. So that when you get to abby section you wrestle with own self about what happened in the hospital it is risky. but thats what makes it powerful and imo a solid sequel to the first.
@@slickstar96 I wasn't talking about any of that. That's what the game wants me to feel and I already know that. I just said I expected Joel to die either way. Also, the switch to Abby doesn't make me look back at what happened in the hospital because I think everyone knows that what Joel did wasn't exactly a great thing to do but rather a controversial one. I personally think it was a very weak sequel compared to the first. Better gameplay and all that but the story doesn't even come close imo. The editing was all over the place, inconsequential side quest that hurts the game's pacing even more, the game's intention with showing Abby's side of the story doesn't work at all, none of the character relationship is even close to being as powerful and compelling as Joel and Ellie, Ellie and Dina's relationship is very bland, some characters are just borderline uninteresting (so uninteresting that I didn't care much when they died), Abby's part lacks tension, the ending was inconsequential and rushed, and there are also plenty of character inconsistencies and changes that makes no sense and is just lazy. That's pretty much my thoughts on the story if you care about it
@@jasonalv7436 everybody knew it was controversial one but everybody had a side to pick was joel right or wrong in that moment. would we have done the same thing as joel thats why the first one hits. We didnt give a crap about the doctor because he was harming someone we loved even though he was doing it for a cause, some people hesitated but most didnt. TLOU has always been morally grey so dealing with joel decision even though it is understandable is the right thing to do to progress the sequel. The side quest, Think what you wanna think but that side quest helped abby realise that she is not wlf she is a firefly whose life got flipped upside down because of joel. Ellie and dina's relationship is honest. Honestly i care about their relationship because i care about ellie. It lacks tension owen and mel towards abby what do you call that tension. Oh yeah and the whole theatre fight hella tension. The ending not touching the ending, all up to interpretation. It is clear to me you didnt like the game because of its structure and that is fine we all have different perspectives and opinions, but i dont think it is lazy and dont believe characters were inconsistent.
First time playing Alien Isolation, I had a little diarrhea and the tension turned me up so much that a jump scare made me crap myself. A little squirt sneaked through and ruined my umderwear.
Forza Motorsport from simcade to Forza Horizon was a huge tonal shift. Forza 4 was a very serious hardcore racer that was the highpoint of the series and they risked the brandname for a more casual friendly audience. Alot of people, myself included were unsure if this was possible or right for the brand. It's not entirely a new change since they are two different series with the same name, however the change still exists and they nailed it
i mean the changed the formula a bit.. but i still feel like zelda had been opening up to larger and larger worlds (Look at wind waker for example). As far as AC- i totally get where you're coming from. But the open-world was a concept the community had been asking for making them a bit less unwelcoming or "risky" I don't see the changes as being risky, more as welcomed additions
Saying the FF7 remake is mostly faithful to the original and only gets a "little weird" towards the end is about the same as if I said they did something "a bit different" with Joel in TLOU2....
I agree. Not only for shooters though, the over the shoulder camera angle will later be used in many non-shooter games like God Of War 2018, For Honor, inFamous, MGS 5, Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, etc.
My first Metroid game was Super Metroid, then Fusion and then Zero Mission and those were at the time some of the most solid games I had played, so I was pretty excited about Prime. And when I first played it - my god was I blown away. The way Retro Studios nailed making Metroid 3D was impressive as hell, I loved the Prime trilogy - and I think all the Prime games remain as some of my best gaming experiences - Prime 1 is my favorite game of all time, 2 and 3 are very close. Side note - I think the graphics for the Prime games still hold up to this day (and they run perfectly at 60 fps) and Prime 3 was the only game which genuinely made me like motion controls on the Wii.

@@kylew6635 Once you have the flamethrower it isn't scary anymore since you can just use it whenever the alien attacks you.
IIRC, that one has a rather simple typo in its A.I. subroutines. If you fix it, the aliens suddenly become capable opponents.
Breath of the Wild abandoned the themed dungeon find the item use item to beat boss formula. Took everything that would make you describe a game as "Zelda like" and removed it or turned it on its head. And it was fantastic
MGS2 was my first game I played in the series. So the raiden switch didn’t bother me too much. But it was a tad jarring at the time lol
The Raiden switch never really bothered me. I just can't really get on board with the last third of the game.

Prey is so underrated. I tried it out a few months ago on game pass and it was one of the most exciting, interesting games I've ever played. Did not like the ending at all, but it was such a different experience and so cool.
I didn't expect much when I got it on sale but it turned out to be one of my favorite games. After I beat it a couple of times I was in that mood that I wish there was more and when I seen it had the dlc Moon I watched some yt vids on it to see if I would like it. It didn't seem I would so I held off on it until it was on sale. One of the best purchases I ever made.
It almost feels weird calling it a dlc because they feel like two different games just with the same mechanics. I think the dlc Moon would've been worth it if it was a full price game it was that good for me.
@@mudmudmudmudmud7605 I haven't played the dlc. I went back to it but don't really have the time to play through it again. I may give it another shot though. Glad to see someone else enjoyed the game like I did.

@@rebeccahamner8795 you sound disagreeable
EA is the type of company to publish the same game every year... wait they already do.
And people still buy that crap ! I don't remember when was the last time EA actually delivered a good game which ain't a cash grab smh
Making the third witcher a massive open world with the resources of a small studio was also bold imo
aand that was shitty game
I LOVE how they changed FFVII's story in the remake. It means that the original remains essential to understanding the overall story... innovation while maintaining the relevance of the past. Beautiful.
The think alien is also isolation is great because of the remarkable AI
I'd say gta going from top down to third person was a huge risk. Both from a tech standpoint and publicly. Violence in video games was a huge topic then. And gta 3 made it much more personal Violence.
Not really. As many games at the time were transitioning from 2D to 3D. Hardly even the most violent. Manhunt.
Kratos would have probably killed the World Serpent if this were the Greek mythology... He really grew up
I want a RE game where you start with the fully upgraded weapons and by the end you're scraping by on low ammo and maybe only 1 maxed out weapon- at least for a secret mode.
I would rather get a RE game playing as the villain in the story.
That's just 4th Survivor mode in RE2.
Mario 64, LoZ: OoT and GTA all come to mind for that hop to 3D. WoW and Pokemon Go really stand out as risky moves that really paid off too.
Does Windwaker count? The game's visual style was under a lot of scrutiny until the game actually came out - and it was awesome.
Surprised BOTW was in there. the major title before it was Skyward Sword, which emphasized the Zelda formula almost too heavily
In 2006, Prey absolutely blew my 17-year old mind. I think it's still among of the most memorable and gruesome games I've ever played on PC.
I still remember the ending and how sad I was that he couldn't save her 😕
the downhill of RE series started in RE4 when it became action focus, it only became a horror survival anymore is because the game now keeps spawning hordes of enemies to you, wasting ammo and health in useless fights; unlike the older ones where you can just run around them, the gunpowder system and limited ink ribbon with the haunting bgms, that is survival horror where every bullet counts.
Probably not risky, more just progression, but Rockstar's choice to make GTA 3D blew my mind when it happened, I was a kid and was just in awe at what they had just pulled off
When you started with an rts about an armef mario made by ubisoft, I knew this would be great
Is it real time? I thought it was turn based?
Ahhh MGS 2, subverting expectations pissed me off but then the meta narrative clicks into gear and the switch played perfectly into a story way ahead of its time and is still relevant to this day. Second favorite music game, right behind 3.
For FF7 Remake; just wanna say I have complete faith in Square for parts 2 and beyond. The Intermission DLC was great and it set up Part 2 very well. Very excited
I'm glad the creator did it, in a interview he said in the og he wanted us to even go to space but dud to technical limitations at the time the og FF7 came out he was unable to.
I think MK transitioning from from 2d fighting to the 8 way walk style was pretty risky. And then to return to the 2d style of gameplay.
Not to mention the camera tracking in god of war! All one single “shot”. It was absolutely a technical marvel
No mention of Fallout series going from isometric 3rd person turn based to first person shooter?
I think IOI did how they did with Hitman on purpose from the newest trilogy. The first one was pretty standard, second was a leaning into story quite a bit more, and third pulled it all together. Its like they were buttering people up to it.
Mario RPG on SNES was soooo freakin good back in the day

@@KingofGames231 Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, and FF6 (SNES 3) have a 3 way tie for my all time favorites. The SNES ended up with an amazing lineup of RPGs over the years.
Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts was a crazy risk. It pissed off tons of fans, but I loved it and it paved the way for a lot of creation games.
Great game on it's own merits. It just shouldn't have had anything to do with the Banjo Kazooie IP.
God of War is the third act of a teather or opera play. It's the last step of the archetype of Kratos. The burden, the killing, hate and anger against the gods has settled up on him and you feel that weight. It has to be slow because it is a deep reflection of all his actions in the past.
Spoiler alert! (three years later duh)
At the end of the game, when he had to go back to take the Blades of Chaos was so damn overwhelming.
I was smack in the market for Alyx. Still never played it or purchased it. So good on them, I guess, for their risky move

Mafia 3. The first two mafia games were linear told stories following Italian Americans in organized crime world.

Breath of the Wild I think can be considered a pretty big risk, there was never an open world zelda before it and the exclusion of huge dungeons was easily a wager in of itself, but I think most can agree it succeeded and are excited to see what Breath of the Wild 2 will bring.
The short dungeons in BOTW were the best part for me. The long ones in the previous games were bit too long to my taste.

I hoped last of us 2 to be in this list ,they took the most realistic way for games. like not all the things in real life has a happy ending especially in a apocalyptic zombie game
Agreed. A pregnant women should go on the front lines of the battlefield like in last of us 2.
It really isn't that risky. Joel dying was expected. Also, the ending was actually a happy ending rather than a dark ending

God of war change just elevated that series to a whole another level beyond then what it previously had achieved

Far cry 3 really did push the open world fps. Not saying it started it, but with how successful and liked it was, alot of other games tried to imitate
I honestly expected to see Breath of the Wild and Assassins Creed Origins/Oddysey/Valhalla on the list.
i mean the changed the formula a bit.. but i still feel like zelda had been opening up to larger and larger worlds (Look at wind waker for example).
As far as AC- i totally get where you're coming from. But the open-world was a concept the community had been asking for making them a bit less unwelcoming or "risky"
I don't see the changes as being risky, more as welcomed additions
AC wasn’t as risky tbh. They followed I tried and true trend.
Saying the FF7 remake is mostly faithful to the original and only gets a "little weird" towards the end is about the same as if I said they did something "a bit different" with Joel in TLOU2....
Yep, you're totally right.
RE4 did not just take a risk to change the game and franchise, it also changed 3rd person shooting in video games.
