THIS IS HOW YOU DEMO A SYNTH! Play some actual music with it, and go to town on the parameters. Holding down one note, making it fart etc is no advert. WELL DONE THAT MAN, KING OF DEMOS!
What's so great about Katsunori is that even though we don't understand a word, he's so enthusiastic and shows everything by hand, that we can follow the review perfectly.
The distored sounds are definitely the MB's strong suit, but if you don't crank it it can do softer tones as well. Just don't push the sliders all the way up, try to keep them at 50% instead. One example: If you are using the sawtooth add a little bit of ultrasaw, mix in a little triangle wave without metalizer slowly roll of the high end using the lowpass filter and set the brute factor to 10 o' clock. that increases the headroom and gives the signal a more rounded tone.
True, I'm a big fan of his videos even though I don't understand the language. He's so passionate and mixes in some english synth words here and there. And he shows everything he does very clearly so you know what he's talking about. The pure joy when he plays a great patch goes through the screen no matter what. Just find his Matrix-12 review, it's hilarious.
Another great video. It was the first video about this machine where i saw someone actually play the beast. I've seen dozens of other videos about the machine, but it´s just talk about waves, filters, blá blá blá. No-one ever plays the machine. Great video, and a great machine within it's kind
Gotta love this guy. His enthusiasm is infectious. I like all his demos. At 03:58 "it's not cheap". Sure, but its not expensive either. Delivery has been pushed off to May . . . it's killin me
I turned on subtitles, then translated the audio to subtitles, translated them to English. It is a surreal experience. Drunken cats, government corruption, terrorism, old proverbs. I don't know what I'm reading, but it's changing my life.
that's because you can detune the oscillators from each other to achieve a thicker sound. You cannot detune a suboscillator, since the sub is basically a divide down circuit that draws its input from the main oscillator. Arturia found a nice workaround for the problem: the "Ultra Saw" circuit is an analogue phaser which creates the illusion of having multiple oscillators.
Its the guy that convinced me to buy an OB-8 with his awesome demo. Great work here too - have been wondering about ultrasaw and metalizer. I wish it had a plugin so you could save and automate it all in your DAW like a vst. Since it is made by arturia i don't see why they didn't.
yup. before automation every serious studio had a polaroid camera ready for taking photos of the settings on the console before zeroing it out for the night or other projects.
With he audio transcript engine (English) I got "Country is dedicated to vibrato but a little cutoff from you guys, Brad, Nicolas, blah blah". Either way, I truly enjoy Katsunori's demos. Everyone of them.
Two people were Kiko and cat various hard armor types. Hmmm.... my thoughts exactly. Love the review. Makes me want to get it even more. Whats that you say? Spring is coming? You were downtown and called the station? I see. : )
well if you possess a moog it's an another story. But not everybody have the money to buy a moog and this is probably the best you can get new for 500$ in full analog. + you do not have to be using only one synth. The minibrute + the filter having a different sound is a great add-on to your collection.
There have been hybrid synths since the 80's, not a new concept. These are generally digital oscillators, with analog filters like the kawai k3. The signal path is whats most important to have analog. I wouldn't call the Tempest a hybrid, the synth engines are all analog, but it has the added luxury of patch memory and digital sequencers.
i don't see how can anybody complain about an instrument sounding bad. it's like all these kiddies heard about moog and will go bashing around other synths and saying oh but it doesn't have the analog sound. instruments sound different, it's like having a giant palette of collectibles ;) i'm personally stoked on this lil guy since i wasn't expecting so much from arturtia but they've impressed me since this synth sounds like a replice of no other synth, it's even a nice first buyer

domo arigato, watashi no ureshi. great video & demo, thanks for this. Muchas gracias por el video, realmente me dejó feliz. xD
@xesionprince: while the sound is only monophonic, it send polyphonic midi information... So it can be used as a midi controller. However, I believe that *none* of the knobs or faders are linked to midi signals.
That's correct, in fact true analog (=MiniBrute) and analog modelling (a.k.a. virtual analog) (=MicroKORG) are two completely different technologies: the first is made of real electric circuits, VCOs, VCFs, etc. the second instead emulates all these elements using software algorithms.
Not neccessarily, it has a five octave range so you can do basically anything with it - at least within the limitations of a monophonic synth, which means that you can't play chords. The minibrute has a fast and a slow option for the envelope generators, so you can also produce drawn out lead tones with an extremely long release time, which is perfect for playing psychedelic stuff. I ffrequently use the minibrute as a second lead voice to complement my 1974 Minikorg 700s
"i don't understand Japanese, but i did like this demo much more than the majority of English reviews"... could not agree more as it seems to be the case with many other japanese demos
not really. it's a mono synth. you could do lead solos with it too, but yes it's awesome for bass. the Moog Minitaur cuts off at a certain octave for some reason, making it 'mainly for making bass sounds'.
As compared to what other synth in this price range? Oh, that's right there aren't any. From what I've seen this synth is far more flexible than any other budget mono, including the Phatty (which I have) the Mopho, Minitaur, etc. You may not like the sound but you have to admit that Arturia killed it for price/features. For those reasons alone this thing is amazing.
I don't really think it sounds cheezy, but I do understand why one might not like the filter... but the waves? how can you not like the basic soundwaves available on almost every synth ever made? the filter is kind of unusual as it doesn't sound anything like your typical analog filter, but I think the synths strange destructive character makes it a must have.
Considering how I own three hardware synthesizers, a few software synthesizers and have been working with synths for quite a while, I'd like to think I do! There's no such thing as a textbook perfect waveform, especially in the realm of analogue synthesis. I don't like the default tonality of this synth's waveforms, nor do I like the filter's tone. You could likely make some decent patches with it- but I'd rather stick with my Moog for analogue.
During the intro playing, I got "The surface of the spate of industrial zone it also affects diffusion technique chic device".. And he's not even talking.
no it's not, you can control analog synths using digital controls. just because something has memory banks it doesn't have to be a virtual analog synth. moog's little phatty is an example of an analog synth with memory banks.
THIS IS HOW YOU DEMO A SYNTH!

Amazing sounding little synth, sounds vintage with beautiful warm tones. Absolutely immense sound

WE LOVE YOU KATSUNORI!
WOW!! The playing!! Best Minibrute synth review I've seen and I didnt understand hardly anything. That's how good it was!
So good to have you back Mr.Katsunori !!!
You are the best for demos on youtube, even if i dont know japanes!!!! Thank you .You are SynthetiSIR !!!
I love the FM-style sound you can get from the metalizer. I wasn't interested in this hardware before but this demo has changed that.
the thing sounds bloody good, lots of options and filter types.
mo ikkai domo arigato! katsunori ichiban desu!

Best review yet, his playing sells it.

Mr. Ujiie, you are ichi bon! I always enjoy your synth demos!
Brilliant demo, excellent playing. So inspiring. Thanks a lot, Mister Demo Genius :-)
sometimes it happens i watch musictrackjp not for the hardware but for this guy. love it - he know how to play a synth, word!. :)

"There is no scary things, I hope I have come to Japan."
Thank you Katsunorisan. Thank you.
You, sir, just forced me to buy one of these. Amazing synth and great demo. Good translation as well.
good demo thank you! i ordered my minibrute back in FEB...not long now!
Brilliant funk playing! Great sound
Thanks so much for the comprehensive demo. Wonderful!
this is great!!
i love the way Japanese make stuff sound important but also fun!
on top of that its a good review
i don't understand Japanese, but i did like this demo much more than the majority of English reviews, :) thank you!
Awesome review with (presumably) good subs!
IMO lack of memory for user patches is it's biggest short coming, not the filter. Other ways i like this. Knob per parameter is always a good thing!
yup. before automation every serious studio had a polaroid camera ready for taking photos of the settings on the console before zeroing it out for the night or other projects.
Probably the most promising modern synth!
With he audio transcript engine (English) I got "Country is dedicated to vibrato but a little cutoff from you guys, Brad, Nicolas, blah blah". Either way, I truly enjoy Katsunori's demos. Everyone of them.

oh i want minibrute and hope arturia release a poly version too ;)

Exactly my conclusion. My (tiny) modular is slowly growing behind my Minibrute ... Extremely addictive !
This is one of the greatest comments ever.
I love your super-funk basslines.
Great demo..... thank lord for de CC..
Great demo!
"i don't understand Japanese, but i did like this demo much more than the majority of English reviews"...

According to vintage synth explorer, it is an analog modelling synth.
It sounds so much better than a rev 2 prophet five! That's it! I am selling obxa and mini to get this.
Katsunori san ,Bravo
It's like I'm playing a 32 bit beat-em up
MINIBORUTO!!111
Great playing.
All this man demoed I'd want to buy, it's my financial ruin !
Great review, subbed!
I really wish that this synth had a memory bank. Its so easy to create awesome sounds that you'd like to save for future use in music production.. :(
Great play!!!
whats that layout in the back....maybe a minibrute desktop protocase? :D
Considering how I own three hardware synthesizers, a few software synthesizers and have been working with synths for quite a while, I'd like to think I do!

what a nice synth but where can i buy this !
No build issue here, and the wait was exactly two months. But the waiting lines have probably grown longer by now ... Small company, slow production.
some people still like to think for themselves instead of blindly following others.
That filter cutoff looks wobbly dawg
The knob is wobbly for sure.
i don't understand ANY word, but the first 3 minutes were AWESOME!!!
I guess thats just rumors, I received mine a couple of days ago and it is built like a tank.
Would you say for example that a Moog VST is an analog synth? The answer is obviously no, same thing for the MicroKORG ;)
Nice playing, at first i thought it was a sequence
"But you will be money. Especially cat." - priceless
During the intro playing, I got "The surface of the spate of industrial zone it also affects diffusion technique chic device"..
And he's not even talking.
My favorite was around 5:00 when the subtitles say "You will be money, espicially cat"
no it's not, you can control analog synths using digital controls. just because something has memory banks it doesn't have to be a virtual analog synth.
moog's little phatty is an example of an analog synth with memory banks.
I love how it tries to transcribe the synth too.
全部はすばらしく聞けた
私の場合は、miniBruteをすでに買ったんです。待つことができなぁい~
MAGNIFIQUE !!!
it's katsunori ujiie !!!!!!!
will you start a band with me?
Just buy one, save up for a doepfer mini modular system and you will have a powerful studio synth right there.
Proper English subs coming soon... sorry about the wait.
it's subtitled...
"Dooh desuka, MINIBURUTU"
Awesome
I don't even need subtitles to understand this demo. The communication transcends speech.
If they added a 0 switch position and tuning knob for the sub-oscillator, I'd be all over it. I still love it the way it is though.
WANT ONE NOW!!!
Thank you Katsu!!!!! ..... SynthetiSir!
No. That's a VA or "Virtual Analog" modelling synth.
Is this mainly for making bass sounds?
do you know anything about synthesis?
What about the Memorymoog?
