I just bought one of these today as my first real synth after going to sam ash and trying out several. I had done a ton of research but this one wasn't even on my list. I just dug the simplicity of the single oscillator and the intuitive layout. This is a great video to point out some nuances of the new machine. The micro brute also drives the filter after the halfway point so I guess it just picked it up from his big brother. Thanks for the video!
great video! I have just purchased the minibrute and it is a great synth. I have a limited budget and I tried the microkorg, mininova, and a Yamaha mx49. None of them were that great because I hate searching through menus. This synth is great because all the controls are physically there to adjust. I am a newbie to analog synthesis so I can't wait to learn more about it.
Hello- also if you have not checked the Minibrute connection software you can change the gate sensitivity there from low, medium, and high. Probably getting it a little more responsive may help.
Great video man! I'm on the go for getting myself the Minibrute SE as my first synth, and I really appreciate your tips and trix here, made me wanna have it soo badly ;)
I didn't see your "previous posts" regarding the sound either (and still haven't, because I don't think I should have to go looking for them). If you have a warning, it belongs in your video description.
I have a Mini and I love this thing. It's a really unique and easy way to shape the waveform of a single analogue oscillator in a way no other analogue synth does. I still have no idea how they are doing it. It's sound is different but awesome. I run the Audio into my MOOG Sub 37 a lot as a third oscillator.. For the price it's way worth the money.. I'm thinking of adding a second one...
thank you for this video! i just got mine today. been messing with it a bit and this was super helpful as far as additional options i have distorting the sound. i actually tried getting "softer" sounds (for a lack of better term) and didnt really get there. the first part really helped clear up the fact that i was pushing the osc too high lol.. thank s again
Just "discovered" your channel man this stuff is excellent. Think everyone who owns a MB should watch this. I totally agree with the oscillator levels point made at the beginning. That halfway point is so clutch on the oscillator mixer. Good stuff man.
Really good video mate. Especially the waveform vol>filter sat. and the in between switch positions. I've been running all sorts of hardware and VST through the input, great way to make use of that lovely filter.
Seems like i missed the that fact about playing just the brutefactor 2nd time riund on watching this. I particularly like the tip on mixing a digital synth on the audio input. Gonna do this with my nova desktop.
The filter controls, envelopes etc are all analog without digital encoders. It will send midi note on/off, aftertouch, pitch-bend, mod wheel and velocity. So if you set your mod wheel to control the filter on the software, that will work. Changing the envelopes will not.
Good stuff, I haven't tried any external sources with my MiniBrute yet but now I am starting to get ideas. I now that the filters apply to the external source, but how about the other things? Can I arpeggiate the external source? Does the vibrato work on it? Basically what I am asking is do those functions make it to the midi out or are they just operating "inside the synth" only?
Not sure if it's on my end or not but there appear to be little slices of your video missing, occasionally you miss a word. That thing with the modulation selector is weird but cool, makes me wonder why they didn't have a "both" option in the middle.
really helpfull tutorial i have the Se i am quite new to midi and i also have a novation mini nova so with a midi cable i go out the novation into the arturia and will be able to use the sounds from the novation?
Hi Flux , a little off topic here with my following question. Im wondering if you know off hand why sometimes my MB would lock up if i send midi into it . For example i sometimes send midi data in from the cubase midi arp which causes the MB to get stuck on 1 note , so i have to switch it off and on again. I have Firmware 1.0.3.2 thankyou.
I found a strange filter envelope quirk. When a long sustain is set, or even no sustain and a bit longer release it seems the envelope doesn't retrigger fully, but kind of stays at the sustain level. It happens only when playing legato. It is like this: first note as it should sound, then all the subsequent notes sound brighter. Did anyone notice this? It's very annoying.
Very cool. I just ordered my MB today and plan to use it with my iPad and my iODOCK. Just like you were doing it with your Novation synth. Have you send audio back from the MB to your iPad for FX etc?
That's really interesting. I've never been in the same room as the new ms-20, but I've been drooling over an MS-20 since the amazing plugin they put out. Do you know how it compares to the original? Build-wise. I feel like I still HAVE to get one.
it looks it from the NAMM videos, glad to see someone can finally confirm it, especially someone that know the MiniBrute. thanks i'd take the feature set for $100 less on my mb over the new ms-20 any day
Massimo Iula not really, the signal flow here is the oscillators into a passive mixer (meaning not an amp see page 29 of the manual for signal flow diagram) from there into the filter, then out to the vca (the amp). The distortion occurs by overloading the filter inputs. The filter inputs can only take so much before they saturate. The mixer is attenuation though, not amplification. At least as far as yves and glen have explained to me (the designers of the minibrute). I can double check with them but pretty positive that's the deal. Thanks for commenting
bro ive been trying to run a mic through the brute but can't seem to get any sound. do you have any idea what i might be doing wrong? have you used the audio in much? any help would be appreciated.
Hey Flux. Good stuff man. I'm super new to synth music. This is the second video I've seen from you. The first video was about the minilogue. I can't figure out which would be better for me as my 1st synth. Was hopi.g you could help me decide. I'd be using it mostly for hiphop related music if that helps.
It really depends on what you are after and what your set up is like. I would NOT get so hung up on analog vs digital. To me it's suoer important to have hands on control. As being your first synth. I really recommend something without a heavy menu dive aspect. Rather something that has most if not all of the controls right on the front panel. This will help you better understand what each control does and that knowledge will translate down the road.
Nice techniques. It is interesting to watch Arturia as they start to learn how to make synths. It still has that loose, home made from a Elenco kit feel and sound to it but I am sure they will come up with a better filter in the future.
Could not disagree more... And in regards to the filter, it's definetly one of my favorite filters. Has a ton of character. This synth is seriously full featured for the price. The designers have been making synths for quite some time, yusynth is extremely capable ;)
+Flux302 of Fluxwithit.com I have to agree with you. Arturia in conjunction with the Novation's Bass Station II (which I don't own) really helped revive feature-packed, affordable analog synths. There's a lot coming out at the moment in 2016, exciting times ahead.
this video is really great because everyone has a misconception that the minibrute can only do aggressive sounds and, as you show, that's really not true
Jeez, the guy tries to make a helpful video and he gets jumped for not doing a 3D surround sound IMAX production. Go watch something else... Thanks Flux, great help!
@@Fluxwithit no I meant the end of your sentences are cut off a bit - as a non native speaker it is not easy to get it all. I am truly interested in what you are saying ;-)
@@matiasmoulin2126 it's been awhile since I made this video I can't remember if I left it in annotations or in the comments, but yes. the voice being cut off was a result of a software glitch or something to that effect in the editing. It was unavoidable at the time.
The in-between modes are a great tip (around 7:20ish).
Nice
I am working up a video on the micro brute now as well :)
***** can you make one about the mini brut SE :) compare them .....
what happens if you put the fast-slow switch in the middle?

4:39 I'm sold. Probably gonna try to get one of those SE versions, though.

Great vid, I would have never known that the waveforms distort just over 50% volume. I should listen with my ears more often.
Bob Borries Thou its nice to have those extra drive options from the mixer.
Here's my performance of Pink Floyd's On the Run on the Microbrute
Arturia Microbrute - Pink Floyd, On the Run.

The arp can go out through cv but there is no output for envelope, only gate and pitch. So no lfo output or anything else.
Not sure if it's on my end or not but there appear to be little slices of your video missing, occasionally you miss a word. That thing with the modulation selector is weird but cool, makes me wonder why they didn't have a "both" option in the middle.

this is what the Brute Factor knob does, actually. the old Minimoog headphone into the filter mixer trick.

awesome man im torn between this or the ms-20 comming out this thing seems amazing u just made it better lol
What is that Pedal beside it? Why not try the sound through it? :S

hi, have you used the amp modulation? i always get sound out when using it without pressing any key, which seems strange to me.
just got one of these bad boys and insta subscribed as your right on the money thanks for making this video
When you pull up the slider an Amp distortion occours. Not the filter...
Osc signal goes into the Amp, and the Amp out into the filter.

Was it only a prototype?
what kind of amp are you using? I just got a Mini Brute and when Im trying it out on bass amps it sounds sounds fuzzy and not punchy
bro ive been trying to run a mic through the brute but can't seem to get any sound. do you have any idea what i might be doing wrong? have you used the audio in much? any help would be appreciated.
really nice information, thanks for doing this.
Excellent tips, thank you!
That F in your logo looks oddly familiar. Just can't seem to place it.
Ha! Nice logo sir :)
Hi! Does external audio also start to drive if pushed far enough?
+Jami Salama Good question
Yes it will drive the filter

Awesome stuff!!

Im always half way on oscillators.
NIce vid man! good tips Ill be using!
Or stereo out?
great vid
thanks, great info!
nice demo ,,, thanks :-)
Jeez, the guy tries to make a helpful video and he gets jumped for not doing a 3D surround sound IMAX production. Go watch something else... Thanks Flux, great help!
woah! we have the same synth and pedals lmao
ouuu yeaaahhh
at about 2:30 my dog jumped out of the window.....
thanks for destroying my hearing with those high frequencies.
Protip: don't play raw synthesizer demos really loud.
MK ultra
Very interesting video, but you should improve your off tone, I's really hard to listen to.
I hope you're not referring to the tuning being a touch flat... that would be ridiculous.
