Merry Christmas, guys. Just watched this last night with the family, and it's still one of the best action movies of all time imo. Also you guys should definitely watch the sequels or at least the third one for Samuel l jackson. Him and Bruce Willis work pair very well together
Die Hard is about an estranged husband and father trying to reconnect with his wife and kids over Christmas. He even brings a present for the kids ( Teddy Bear) The movie features multiple Christmas songs including Let it Snow over the end credits. Theres a jingle bells motif that plays throughout the film. John Mclain writes HO-HO-HO and puts a Santa Hat on the body. He uses Christmas packing tape to conceal the pistol at the end. The entire plot hinges on the building being nearly deserted for Christmas eve. Lastly, the final line of the film is "If this is your idea of Christmas I gotta be here for New Years" as Let it Snow begins to play. I rest my case
Bruce Willis said Die Hard isn't a Christmas movie, however the Writer of the movie has said multiple times that it *is* a Christmas movie. I trust the writer's take more than Bruce's. 😏 It's still not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls off of Nakatomi Plaza. 🎄
@@TacoTuesday555Then Gremlins, Batman Returns, Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2, Harry Pottter, Rocky 4, Mean Girls, Little Women, Parent Trap, Iron Man 3, Trading Places, Lethal Weapon, Hook, Jarhead, and Crash would all be Christmas Movies. Just because it takes place during Christmas time, doesn't make it a Christmas Movie.
also 20th Century Fox has also said and Placed it as a Christmas Movie so i think the Creator and Owner (Movie Studio) has all the say on what the movie is...but now if Disney wants to remove that Christmas status they can since the whole 2019 Disney-20th Century Fox Acquisition happened so that means Disney is the current Owner of Die Hard
This movie was a game-changer in the action movie genre. Prior to this, especially in the 80s, when people thought of action heroes, they pictured Stallone, Schwarzenegger. etc.--invincible, muscle-bound types. "Die Hard" pioneered the "everyman" action hero type. The hero who doesn't walk out of the total carnage he created like it was nothing. McClane is beaten to within an inch of his life, bloodied, bruised, physically, mentally and emotionally drained. It made action movies more relatable to the audience.
Also Alan Rickman redefined the archetype of the action villain by playing a sophisticated, well-spoken, well-mannered mastermind who prefers brains over brawn and pays attention to detail.
💜✋ You have to understand the context of this movie : BRUCE WILLIS was a comedic actor at the time! He played in an American TVseries ( Moonlighting, 1985-1989 ). Nobody believed that he could be the main action character in a movie! Bruce wasn't even on the movie posters, the producers didn't believe him either! This fantastic movie catapulted Bruce Willis to the world action star of the time! At that time, action heroes were extra strong, indestructible, didn't bleed (Arnold and the others), but Bruce Willis introduced a new type of action hero. His character was an ordinary person who bled, was exhausted, sometimes frustrated, but still full of determination to win the fight! Bruce Willis proved this with this great movie! Thank you for your great reactions! This is how millions of people around the world reacted to this Iconic movie ✋💜
The balls on Bruce to ask Fox for $5 million dollars for the role. He was a massive TV star at the time, I guess Fox shrugged and gave it to him. Frank Sinatra, Arnold, Stallone, Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford were all asked before Willis signed on. I can't imagine the movie being as good as it is with those guys.
If I recall, there was massive controversy around Bruce Willis as the lead. He was cast based on his hit show at the time 'Moonlighting'. He'd never been the lead in the major movie AND they paid him a record $5 million for the role. The media was saying it was outrageous for an actor to be paid so much! LOL! Money well spent for the BEST XMAS MOVIE OF ALL TIME!
It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Plaza. :) Enjoyed the Christmas reaction. I never heard the take Jen had on John and Al having things to overcome in their personal lives (mistakes of the past). That was a fresh insight to me and that was cool to keep in mind watching this going forward. Have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year :)
The police telling him to use 911 instead of chanel 9 is pretty realistic, its a reserved channel for emergency services to talk to each other, too many pranksters could abuse the system, plus they already got a call from Nakatomi plaza telling them they had a bogus fire alarm.
I think a funny little moment is that just after they kill Takagi, Karl gives Theo money. They were betting on whether he'd give up the code or not. Always makes me chuckle a bit when that scene happens and when other people don't get it.
Fun fact. Alan Rickman was told he wasn't going to be dropped. They lied to him to get that shot and his legitimate look of shock and fear on his face is real.
and when john is shooting the guy from under the table; the ''don't hesitate'' guy, bruce was using extra loud blanks, which sadly gave him permanent hearing damage
No, he wasn't told he wasn't going to be dropped. They were counting down until the drop, but the stunt coordinator told them to drop him before the countdown finished. That's why he looks surprised. Don't call things facts unless you confirm they are facts first.
I never understand why directors do things like this “they didn’t tell him because they wanted a legitimate reaction” Um Alam Rickman is an actor, he’s getting paid to act and perform legitimate reactions. It’s like directors don’t trust that their actors can act…
I feel Alan Rickman's performance elevates the movie above the humdrum actioner. His cool calm delivery backed up with deadly ruthlessness makes him a worthy adversary to McClane.
Director John McTiernan's next film after Predator (1987) and loosely based on the Roderick Thorp novel, "Nothing Lasts Forever" (1979). Bruce Willis' 3rd film role and he became the highest paid film actor of the time ($5 mil). This was after he released an album called "The Return of Bruno" and finishing his 5-season run on the TV series, "Moonlighting". Willis as McClane was known as America's unluckiest cop. But as an flawed and relatable character, it made him beloved as an action hero. The late, Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) in his first feature film redefined onscreen villains, one of several actors in the film who've passed away. Many copycats were made. Some were good and some weren't. But it is a true summer blockbuster. Considered to be The Greatest Action Film of it's time. The late Michael Kamen's score and elements of Beethoven's Ode to Joy really makes magic in this. As it's only set during Christmas, it's only been seen as an Christmas film. Of the 4 sequels, parts 2, 3 and 4 are pretty good. The 5th and final one is not seen as an good finale. Willis' retirement from acting in early 2022 after being diagnosed with Aphasia was very unexpected. His career reads over 100 roles, films and television. As Detective John McClane, he'll never be forgotten. Merry X-mas and Yippy-Ki-Yay, MuthaF****,
Bit of trivia, Bruce Willis was shooting Moonlighting a TV show he was on at the same time as this. He did Moonlighting during the day and Die Hard at night. And the 640 million in bearer bonds would be worth 1.8 billion today 😮
Fun fact, the gentleman playing the limo driver Argyle was the child shot at by Ray Charles in The Blues Brothers for trying to steal a guitar from Ray's store.
For many years I didn't pick up on a little detail that they hid in the movie regarding Alan Rickman's character: When they took Takagi to the office to question him, Hans Gruber mentions how he loved building models as a kid, with an emphasis on "every conceivable detail". This is actually a hint towards his actual motivation. Certainly, having 640 million dollars in negotiable barabonds, which can be made into a decent flow of money for the entire crew, can be motivation enough. But to Hans it is also a challenge that he wanted to tackle - he is the mastermind that not only gets to steal from a huge Japanese company, from one of their most secure locations, but also while utilizing the help of the local police and the FBI. If John McClane hadn't intervened with all of it, his plan would have worked out as well. McClane proved to be his ultimate downfall, because he was an unpredictable element throughout the entire situation. In the audio commentary for the film, John McTiernan, the director, stated that Hans Gruber is the actual protagonist of the film, driving the narrative, while John McClane is the antagonist, with the main goal of thwarting this plan.
Merry Christmas, Holden and Jen! thank you for being my entertainment for today. spending it alone this year so its nice to see some friendly faces that always bring joy to my life when I watch your content. BTW, Die Hard 1 and 2 are both Christmas movies lol
Shoutout to the Beretta APX for being a solid thumbnail prop. I love mine. John McLane’s Beretta is in a movie prop museum now. It’s the same prop pistol Mel Gibson used in the first Lethal Weapon. Happy Christmas!
Karl , the blond guy he was fighting had a Stey AUG that was a bad-ass assault rifle , I think it was a selective fire rifle that could fire in semi-automatic , full automatic and burst mode.
Fun fact, when Hans (Alan Rickman) fell from the window they never told him they would release the cable to drop him so his reaction in the movie was a genuine shock from being let go from the cable
I saw Die Hard in the cinema way back in 1988 as a teenager and absolutely fell in love with it then and it still stands out as such a great action movie today (and just a great movie overall). The director, John McTiernan, also directed Predator which is great. I think those are his two most popular ones. But just an awesome movie. Freakin love ALL of it and really hope you watch at least the next two Die Hards. They're both great. Merry Christmas!! :)
So me and my girlfriend at the time was walking past a movie theater and this kid was standing outside and asked us if we wanted to see a sneak peek of a new action flick which turned out to be Die Hard. We went that night and was totally blown away. Within a span of about 2 weeks, I saw it 3 times. I totally love this movie.
A fun little joke, Ellis is introduced to John when he is caught snorting coke, he is killed talking to John while drinking a coke 😂 this and Die Hard 2 and Lethal Weapon 1-Christmas Must watch ❤️
The whole Christmas movie debate really boils down to what you think a movie needs to be a Christmas movie because there are people who don't think Die Hard is one even though everything takes place on Christmas, but some think Harry Potter is a Christmas movie even though during its 2hr+ runtime they have one Christmas scene for several minutes. Now Die Hard 2 also takes place at Christmas, but that one I wouldn't consider a Christmas movie, to me if I was really strict about it a Christmas movie's plot has to be able to work around the holiday, if it can happen without the holiday it's not a Christmas movie so with Die Hard he goes to California to be with his family for Christmas and he ends up at the building because of he's wife's company Christmas party that occurs after hours, there's no other holiday where a company would throw this kind of party except maybe New Years, but with John being a cop it's likely he wouldn't get that holiday off especially if he got Christmas off. The events of Die Hard 2 take place on Christmas, but can absolutely take place any other time of year, John is at the airport to meet Holly and then go to his inlaws, but that scenario can still happen any time it's not dependent on Christmas. Surprisingly several classic Christmas movies technically aren't Christmas movies because their story can take place at any other time, Home Alone could happen during spring/summer break or anytime as long as you have the family fly off for a vacation leaving Kevin home alone. White Christmas is mostly about two entertainers who served in the military trying to help out the general they served under, everything can still happen as they do in the movie without it being Christmas only the closing number would of course change. Honestly for me I don't really want to get too strict about it so as long it takes place during the holiday why shouldn't it be a Christmas movie, it would have to be a really horrible movie not to be considered, looking at you Christmas Vacation 2.
The trivia behind this movie is amazing . Bruce Willis was consider to be a joke to be cast in an action movie. The way the movie was shot changed action movies forever . Bruce lost some of his hearing due to the explosions and gun fire. Alan Rickman's first movie. The actor who played Karl was a world renown ballet dancer who's defection was made into a movie itself
Merry Christmas ya filthy animals! 😂 And a Happy New Year! I hope you both have a wonderful, blessed, and Very Merry Christmas 🎄 today Holden and Jen!! Forever grateful to have found y’all’s channel last year and forever a supporter and fan of your content and channel!! 🫡❤️🙏🏻💯🇺🇸🎄
John McClane trying to get to his family for Christmas, Hans Gruber's plan needs to take place at the Christmas party, Christmas songs and decorations happen throughout the movie, Ellis brings the "snow", Alan Rickman says "HO-HO-HO", friendships are made, self reflection and personal growth occur. How is this not a Christmas movie?😁
Merry Christmas to both of you and your families. I love this movie. I remember it being the first ever DVD that I bought back when DVD players were like $700. I hope Lethal Weapon gets a run too. Both classic 80s action flicks.
I have a similar memory, but my first DVD was the original Matrix. I still have both that DVD & the old $700 Panasonic DVD player from back in the late 90s kicking around somewhere.
One of the things I really appreciate about Die Hard is the subtle ways that most of Hans' crew had a chance to show some aspect of their personality and weren't just background henchmen. I the little bet between Karl and Theo, Uli taking a candy bar, and of course Fritz and his hair. On the other hand, that Tony wore sweats to a heist is just a little peculiar.
Thank you for this! Die Hard has been one of my Christmas traditions for several years, but i hadn't had a chance to watch it this year! This "cliff notes" version made the perfect solution!
fun fact what inspired this movie is the creator/writer of Die Hard had Writers Block while trying to write the main plot of the script which at some point he had a intense argument with his wife so he went for a late-night drive to cool off and while driving he was coming around a curve at a high speed and in his lane was a Refrigerator Box and he braced for his death from impact...but Luckly the Box was Empty and when he got home he apologized to his wife it was that fear and survival of near Death experience that helped develop the main Focus and Drive Conclusion to Die Hard to survive and say I'm sorry to the one you love
I can't complain about the tree being up - my grandfather still had Christmas decorations up on the outside of his house in July and would light them up at night.
I was 17 the year Die Hard came out and I love it. It has since become my tradition to watch on Christmas Eve; it is not Christmas Eve until Hans Gruber falls from the Nakatomi building. Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman were amazing. A few years ago, my friend Samantha gave me a book for Christmas titled A Die Hard Christmas; it tells the story of the movie in the style of The Night Before Christmas. I also have another book titled Why We Love Die Hard.
Honestly Mission Impossible deserves some kind of award for teaching a generation of kids all over the world to stay the hell out of elevator shafts. Those things are dangerous as hell, if not actively murderous like in the movie, I don't remember even once considering getting inside one of those things since I saw that movie as a kid.
Argyle the limo driver at the end of the movie confirmed this was a Christmas movie by saying, " if this was your idea for Christmas I gotta be here for New Years.
I also miss how 80s movies look. I don't know if it's because it's shot on film, but they fool my brain . Modern movies have this "yep, that's a sound stage" vibe to it.
Just the sound of that jet flying in brings back memories. Saw this when it came out on biggest screen in Ireland at the time. I thought it was a real plane flying overhead.
1:23 funnily enough, Bruce Willis was not in most of the original promo material for Die Hard prior to the release. Up to that point he was best known for comedic roles-at the time he was on a big TV series called Moonlighting-so the filmmakers didn’t want to send the wrong message and have people think Die Hard was gonna be a comedy.
In addition to "Die Hard" and "The Money Pit," Alexander Godunov also appeared in "Witness." Personally, I loved his humor in "The Money Pit" and wish he had gotten more of those kind of roles.
That he could be a bartender for all we know reference is an inside joke bc Bruce tended bar in Hell’s Kitchen when he went out on auditions during the day.
Awesome piece of trivia... The shot of Hans falling to his death was filmed by dropping Alan Rickman 40ft off a ledge onto crash pads and green screen. He his sh!ting bricks leading up to filming the scene and he got tricked... The stunt coordinator was told to give Rickman a count up to 3 but to drop him on 1 to make his look of shock and terror as he falls more genuine... Rickman wasn't very please immediately afterwards but respected it because he himself volunteered to do the stunt himself, an idea which the producers weren't very keen but gave it the go ahead in the end. 🎬
Die Hard begins with Christmas music celebrating the holiday where our protagonist is going to a party to celebrate Christmas. Which is disrupted by The Grinch (Gruber) who is trying to ruin the holiday for everyone there. Our hero thwarts this and reunites families with one another and once again ending with Christmas music. How the hell is that not considered a Christmas movie to some?
Merry Christmas!!!!! Die Hard is my favorite Christmas movie ever. (Yes, I consider it Christmas.) I watch this annually and it’s still one of my favorite movies of all time. I thank you for watching this delightful movie. 🎄
Merry Christmas, Mr.Cowboy. Thanks for tuning in with us this holiday season!

The rolex! He de-latches the rolex, which falls with hans. The rolex represent the company breaking up the family.
Also at the end after the family is reunited and a Christmas miracle occurs, its "snowing" with the papers falling from the sky.
You take out the heist and the machine guns and this is a Hallmark Christmas movie.

The asphasia was likely kicking in by that point.

How Dumbledore falls off the Tower when he is killed by snape is the same shot as how Hans gruber dies.
Merry Christmas hardmans I’m 18 and I aspire to be like you guys in the future, giving me some needed joy on the 25th!
Die hard is an absolute classic, hope you guys are having great Christmas day. 😊
Holden keeps the hostages calm as Jen takes down the thieves.
In almost every project I worked on, I had an opportunity to use the line "quit being part of the problem".
"Dont shoot another kid Al...."
Savage Holden lol
Merry Christmas ya filthy animals! 😂 And a Happy New Year! I hope you both have a wonderful, blessed, and Very Merry Christmas 🎄 today Holden and Jen!! Forever grateful to have found y’all’s channel last year and forever a supporter and fan of your content and channel!! 🫡❤️🙏🏻💯🇺🇸🎄
LOVE the sweater dood. That show was my childhood. Also hope you guys are having a Merry Christmas.
John McClane trying to get to his family for Christmas,
Hans Gruber's plan needs to take place at the Christmas party,
Christmas songs and decorations happen throughout the movie,
Ellis brings the "snow", Alan Rickman says "HO-HO-HO",
friendships are made, self reflection and personal growth occur.
Holden: He wants to deck her halls... that's the last one, I swear!
Also Holden: Who's to say...
I got gifted a Christmas sweater this year, that says yippy ki yay with a mistletoe. Definitely a Christmas movie.
Holden and Jen do the best youtube reactions cant wait for 2025 reactions. Holdens irish accents are the best ever.
Merry Christmas Mrs. Hardman!!!
I like how the falling bond papers at the end looks like it's snowing. Just like a Christmas movie.
I remember seeing this in the theater the first time, and when the movie was over, I was like, "Holy Crap! An ACTUAL edge of your seat film!"
Just love how the police radio lady didn't catch on right away....wow
Merry Christmas to you and family man!!
Die Hard is the only movie that both the Writers Guild and Directors Guilt have voted as a Perfect movie.
Merry Christmas Holden and Jen and the rest of the family have a great big christmas do it hard die hard, die hard the movie
It IS a Christmas movie.
it's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Plaza
5:45 Jen might remember Mr. Takagi’s voice from Mulan. James Shigeta, the actor who plays Takagi, voiced General Li in Mulan.
Just the sound of that jet flying in brings back memories. Saw this when it came out on biggest screen in Ireland at the time. I thought it was a real plane flying overhead.
Merry Christmas 🌲
I actually never seen Die Hard all the way through. But watching it with you guys on Christmas definitely is less lonely in the holidays.
Merry Xmas guys!! And happy new year!
Merry Christmas! I was watching while cooking Christmas dinner.
December 15th was my family’s traditional day of putting up the Christmas Tree. Down around Jan 5th.
hope u guys have a great Christmas 🙏
"The blond one" was also competition for Harrison Ford in _Witness_ (1985).
“Christ Powell, he could be a fucking bartender for all we know” 😂😂😂
In addition to "Die Hard" and "The Money Pit," Alexander Godunov also appeared in "Witness." Personally, I loved his humor in "The Money Pit" and wish he had gotten more of those kind of roles.
I wish you both a Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas
You never asked Jen if she thought that Die Hard could be considered a Christmas movie.
This is THE christmas movie! Love every second of it!
Holden I need that sweater lol Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Ah a great Xmas film!
Reginald Veljohnson was offered the role of Carl Winslow after this role.
This was Alan Rickman's first theatrical role.
WOAH HOLD UP ? I'LL UNOFFICIAL YOU 🤣🤣
This IS an official Christmas movie, we'll have 0 slander here Holden
Happy holidays, to you and your family
Speaking of series never finished you gotta finish the cornetto trilogy. The worlds end is waiting
Under 200 squad! Utter brilliant legendary film and YES it IS a Christmas movie. Merry Christmas guys
It amazes me that Alan Rickman almost said no to the role of Hans Gruber
It’s common in the south to leave the tree up until sometime in February and redecorate it for Mardi Gras.
