Reactors with questions that the movie isn't going to neccesarily answer (or presumes you'll understand) are always fun. :)
14:03 "Why didn't he at least put his shoes back on?" He only had seconds to get out of the bathroom and into the stairwell unseen, no time to grab his shoes.
14:15 A lot of people think John just stopped to oogle the woman in the next building, but he was looking at her because she was on the phone, which told him that it was specifically their building's phones down, not an area-wide problem.
15:24 Yasser Arafat, a prominent Palestinian leader in the 80s through the early 2000s.
21:30 "Oh, what is he doing?" He's making a list, one hopes he'll check it twice. :)
22:11 "Who has those photos up?" Odds are the costruction guys who have been working on finishing the building before they broke for Xmas. :)
24:05 "How tall is this building?" I believe it's a 40 story building, so its likely between 492 ft and 608 ft tall. And from that carryout Al was clearly at least a few blocks away, on top of that.
24:37 The point of him being barefoot is to make him more vulnerable, at more of a disadvantage, and more of a relatable underdog.
28:41 Most skyscraper buildings' windows don't open by design, primarily (but not only) for safety reasons.
31:51 Roy Rogers, nicknamed "The King of the Cowboys", singer actor and television host. The most famous tv & movie cowboy of the 1950s. John told Hans "I was always partial to Roy Rogers, myself". Yippie Ki yay was also a callback to Roy Rogers.
Good reaction, and remember: It's not Xmas until we see Hans Gruber fall off of Nakatomi Plaza. 🎄

Nice breakdown of the various scenes in the movie. Many of today's reactors try to react to the film while making certain commentary while sometimes missing critical exposition or a sequence of events that will explain some of their questions. Anyway great breakdown and explanations.

18:02 the specific floor is being reported by the fire alarm system to the security desk to let them know which floor has the fire. Also, in high rise buildings, you don't always evacuate the whole building when an alarm goes off.
31:55 they are using CB radio which is open to anyone on the same channel.
1:03:16 "Why isn't he getting in an ambulance?" Wow, you really haven't seen many 80s action movies. 😁 Heroes don't need ambulances or hospitals.
If you want another classic 80s action movie series, I'd suggest Lethal Weapon.

The "papers" flying around at the end were the bearer bonds Hans was trying to steal, so they wouldn't have been flying around until Hans went out the window and opened the room to the outward suction that would have occurred at that height.

The thing that makes this the ideal action movie is that John McClane is tough, smart, and resourceful, but he's not invincible and he's not inhuman. He kicks ass and makes wisecracks, yes, but he also gets hurt, he gets scared, he gets emotional thinking he might not make it. He's trying to get home to his wife and kids, yes, but his bromance with Sgt. Powell is the beating heart of this movie. Alan Rickman's performance can't be praised enough, either, playing the rare smart villain who has planned ahead, doesn't lose his cool, and presents an actual threat to the hero. Such an amazing, film, it's no wonder people are still digging it to this day. Great reaction, as always!

15:24 'Who's Arafat?' Yasser Arafat was the Chairman of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) from 1969-2004 and President of the Palestinian National Authority (PLA) from 1994-2004. He was a shrewed politician, and participated in numerous negotiations with the Israelis (typically negotiated by the US) but he was also notoriously corrupt, and became a billionaire by embezzling money from the PLO, much of which he invested in overseas property and European banks.

The key to this movie which they undermined in almost all the subsequent sequels is that John McLane is a very, very HUMAN protagonist. He is NOT Arnold or Stallone. He is an average cop in a situation well over his pay grade that is incredibly dangerous to him from start to finish. He is not a He-Man warrior. He is vulnerable, afraid and outgunned.
The moment that sums it up for me is the roof jump. John looks over the edge and doesn't say some quip or a bad ass hero line... He says "Dear God, please don't let me die".
And the audience is right there with him in that sentiment. Not bravado... Humanity. The same as on display when John tells Powell to send a message to Holly that boils down to "I'm sorry".
Die Hard works because it has humanity as violent and of its time as it is.

Yes but that really doesn't hold up. He is not average at all, he is a straight up genius. He may not have the strength and training of a warrior, but he outsmarts everyone. If the average person was a smart and well meaning as McClane we would live in a paradise. In reality the average man is more like that police chief.

Yasser Arafat was chairman of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation) and the Fatah political party that now runs the West Bank in Gaza. The PLO was known for violent resistance against the brutal Israeli occupation, and its tactics included hijackings. Arafat pivoted the PLO and Fatah into trying to establish conditional peace with Israel. Unfortunately, things did not work out, for many reasons including the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, by an extremism Jewish Israeli terrorist. As with Arafat, Rabin had started his journey with violence and militancy, and also changed direction towards peace.
At the time of this movie, Arafat was likely seen by most in the West as just a terrorist.

💜✋ You have to understand the context of this movie : BRUCE WILLIS was a comedic actor at the time! He played in an American TVseries ( Moonlighting, 1985-1989 ). Nobody believed that he could be the main action character in a movie! Bruce wasn't even on the movie posters, the producers didn't believe him either! This fantastic movie catapulted Bruce Willis to the world action star of the time! At that time, action heroes were extra strong, indestructible, didn't bleed (Arnold and the others), but Bruce Willis introduced a new type of action hero. His character was an ordinary person who bled, was exhausted, sometimes frustrated, but still full of determination to win the fight!
Bruce Willis proved this with this great movie!
Thank you for your great reactions! This is how millions of people around the world reacted to this Iconic movie ✋💜

Die Hard was never "intended" as a Christmas movie. It was released in July of 1988 as a summer blockbuster during the summer movie season, shortly after the 4th of July. Die Hard is based on a novel called 'Nothing Lasts Forever,' by Roderick Thorpe, which was a sequel to an earlier novel, 'The Detective,' which was made into a 1968 crime drama starring Frank Sinatra as NYPD Detective Joe Leland. Thorpe got the inspiration for the sequel after watching the movie, 'The Towering Inferno,' and the only reason it was set during Christmas was because he needed a reason for Joe Leland (renamed John McClane in the movie) to visit his grown-up daughter, who worked at the headquarters of Klaxon Oil Corporation in Seattle, Washington, which is a skyscraper which ends up being taken over by terrorists.

A fear of broken elevators? I've gotten stuck between floors on them twice in my life. The first time was the best. I kept pushing the emergency call button and a guy would answer, say "hello? hello?" while not hearing my repeated statement about us being stuck in the elevator. We did that about 5 times. I 'm sure the microphone inside the broke elevator wasn't working. He finally came down to see who the hell kept pushing the call button. He opened the door and there was about a 2-foot high space between the building floor and the bottom of our elevator floor. Needless to say I was a bit hesitant when he said, "just crawl through". After a little reassurance I did so as quickly as I could, not wanting to be halfway through if the elevator suddenly moved up or down. We were stuck in there, between floors, for nearly 20 minutes.
The old guy I was on the elevator with was a very strange series of exchanges too. I wondered if he had an early stage of Alzheimers or severe brain trauma. We were in a hospital elevator. If John had taken the time to put his shoes back on then he would have been caught by the guy dragging people out of the offices. They took away his shoes to balance the scales with the bad guys - he needed something to make his task more difficult... something to overcome, which makes him even more heroic. Pretty basic storytelling. The paper falling at the end was the thousands of bond documents that Hans and company were trying to steal - the explosion earlier would have burned any paper. He wasn't shot... he was grazed by the bullet. He definitely needs to go to the hospital for his feet but there's no rule that says he can't ride there in a limo.

In defense of Ellis (the Snow-man)'s character, he doesn't know almost anything about John or how the movie will play out. He knows he's making the terrorists angry and they could likely take it out on hostages. He genuinely thinks he can resolve the situation. And few give him credit for playing that he's John's friend and he invited him. Even at the end when he was doomed, he didn't give up that Holly was his wife and that he could bargain with her. ... That being said... Say no to snow, my friends.

    "Who wrote this movie?"
It was actually adapted from a book. There were a few differences. There main character has a different name and is much older (a retired cop). He's trying to save his daughter, not his wife, and unfortunately, when Hans falls to his death, he takes the daughter with him.
Because the book was a follow-up to another book with that character that has previously been made into a movie, Frank Sinatra playing the main character, they were contractually obligated to offer this film to Sinatra (who was almost 70, by this point). Fortunately, Sinatra passed.

Because Home Alone was designed as a more family friendly Die Hard using a smart kid as the "every man" protagonist defending a structure from siege by professional thieves, which were changed to tough but dumb so the protagonist could win and reunite with his estranged family at the end. Home alone is a PG version of Die Hard but with far less Christmas music.

37:33 "How do we know that building will be structurally OK after that."
    It will be just fine.
In 1993, real terrorists detonated a 1,300 pound bomb at the World Trade Center.
That real blast in that building shattered glass windows more than a block away and fractured several layers of concrete in the parking garage.
But it didn't damage the structural integrity of the building very much at all; just one support column was slightly damaged, the nearly 300 other columns were fine.
The beam was repaired and the concrete replaced and the building was open in under two weeks.
John dropped down 1 pound of explosive. It detonated several missiles that had not been fired at the police yet, but that is still less than 10 pounds of total explosive, not even 1 percent of the World Trade Center blast.
Further, all that blast went out the windows - explosions are just expanding gas and when gas expands, it looks for the easiest way out. Windows are easier than walls and walls are easier than support beams. And if you look, none of the walls were damaged - just the windows.

  • @skyhawksailor8736
    @skyhawksailor8736 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

This was Alan Rickman's first Big screen movie, prior he had only been in TV shows and movies. The picture was either a Playboy or Penthouse Centerfold. These were common Adult magazines, Playboy was the first and Maryland Monroe was the first Centerfold. It was very common for places of work which was men only and some where there were women to have the Centerfold pictures to be put up on walls. Playboy Magazines logo was a Bunny head and they hid their bunny head logo on all their covers. It was very common when someone could not find the bunny on the cover, another employee would bring the copy in to show where the logo was hidden. My fist job was in 1972, when I was in the 6th grade as a paperboy, and the first time I looked through a Playboy. My paper route was the Married couple's apartments at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). There was an outside door to four apartments, two down stairs, two upstairs. The four small mailboxes were on the wall between the right apartment's door and the stairs. The larger items which would not fit in the small box, the postman would lay the mail on the stairs. When the playboy's were delivered the postman would lay the magazines on the stairs. The magazines were not wrapped in plastic, just wrapped in a sleeve of brown paper, which they could be slid out and slid back in. I did my paper route at 0430, so everyone was always asleep. Naturally I would always look through the Playboy at the first apartment which had one laying on the step. It was the first time I saw a picture of a naked woman. My Senior year in 1977 I worked at a 7/11 convenience store and we had a rack behind the counter with Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, and Penthouse Forum. While working in February we learned a girl from our school who graduated in 1975 was the centerfold. My female Homeroom teacher asked me if I could bring in a copy to check it out, so I borrowed a copy and brought it in and she took it and showed all the teachers. When I picked it up after my last class, since I just borrowed the magazine, she said she had not seen one since the 50's and did not realize they now were showing everything. Most of the actual centerfold photos only had their breast exposed, and had their leg hiding their crotch. Penthouse and Hustler Centerfold pictures showed everything and sometimes had them spread wide open.

24:00 well according to wiki the building is about 150m tall and we can quickly see he's at bellwood avenue which according to google maps is just over 600m away from the building. With the height, rough math tells me the direct distance from Al to John is about 640-650m. Next, they're firing mp5s at (I believe) 9mm which has effective range of about 200m. Now if this was in ideal conditions, somewhere in the country, quiet, no trees or hills in the way, you could probably hear the shots, but in downtown LA with a lot of traffic noise and stuff, I think it's pretty realistic Al wouldn't hear anything from that distance... And yes I realise I used metric system, but I refuse to use the inferior one, you can just replace meters with yards, it's close enough at this scale...
