Drybrushing Texture Palette / Wet Palette

- Recently dry brushing texture palettes seem to be gaining popularity so I decided to try making one so I could try it out. My miniature painting space is limited so I need a compact texture dry brush palette. After checking reddit I found that some people had success using their Army Painter wet palette lid. I didn't want to use the lid but my brush holding area was available so I decided to use that.
This is a really easy build. I finished it in 1 day. Well, 2 if you count waiting for some PVA glue to dry. Now I'm excited to give it a try in my next painting project.

This is a great idea, I upgraded to a redgrass palette a few years ago but still have my army painters pallette and this would be a great conversation for it.

I was thinking of using a plastic bin but didn’t want to clutter up my small painting space. Using this is a big space saver.

Thanks for watching and commenting. In a previous comment it was mentioned that the way I built this may damage dry brushes. If I were to do this again I would try to use only plastic pieces. I added some sand which might be rough. Just a heads up.

It is a smple modification and can be finished in an hour or so. I wuld love to take credit for the idea but I can't because I saw it on reddit. I just wanted to spread the word. Good luck on your project.
Ha! Me and my friend did this when the Red Grass Palette first came out. Because it also fits their glass palette so well, I bought a second palette to exclusively hold the glass palette and the texture palette.
Friggin excellent idea! I think I’d leave that smaller smooth area flat to put my paint on for mixing and as my base pallet. I currently use a piece of MDF I went crazy on with my Dremel but it’s big and I never use that much of it.
Leaving the smaller area flat is a brilliant idea! Wish I’d have thought of that.
@@brianshobbyspace3569 I watched the video then looked at my current dry pallet and my army painter pallet and realized I never use as much space on the dry pallet as there is in the AP one.

Let me recommend using lots of round bits, furry bits, and some angular pieces. I used sand but probably should have left that off.

i feel like if youre using dropper bottles, you dont want to wetpallet your paint, so if you kept that bottom 1/3 where you cut the line out as just an open flat bit for paint mixing, that might even be better! thoughts?

Milion dollar idea
Never heard of a texture pallette but it looks interesting.
Have you noticed a difference between just using paper towels and the pallette?
When dry brushing, you don't really want it erhh... dry because it ends up looking chalky. So when tuning your brush to have just the amount of paint needed, you don't want paper towel or card board to suck up the moisture still in the brush. Using a shallow detailed thinggie to tune your brush before applying it on your model is good practice. Also, have a small lightly hydrated sponge on the side to put a bit of moisture back in the brush during your session helps keeping the brush moist without excess paint. Don't go overboard building up your dry palette with sharp details or you'll end up damaging your brush after a while.
Using a texture palette and a small sponge will keep the drybrushing from getting too dried out and streaky. If I’m going for battle wear and tear then a paper towel is fine but if you want smoother gradients then a little moisture helps. I didn’t demonstrate this because I wanted the video to focus on the texture palette itself.
Duncan Rhodes recently put out a great video explaining dry brushing capes. I highly recommend that video.

I tried this but found I got mould growth on my texture pallet. How did yours go?
@@wingwalker007 I haven't had any growth or mold on mine. I do frequently wash the sponge with soapy water and rinse and dry the rest of the palette as well.
Could you use super glue for fixing the parts instead of a hot glue gun?
Yes. super glue would work fine.

Nope. I've been busy with a mini conversion. I plan on testing this out on that model. Hopefullyit works well. Some people have commented that this may actually be bad for my brushes. I am looking forward to testing it out.
Just out of curiosity, do you live in Japan? Most of the products you showed had Japanese labeling and even you went outside to spray the pallet, it looked like a suburban Japanese parking lot (all that grey stone).

@@gracefaithCHRISTscriptureGOD I didn't use a drybrush palette or wet palette for a long time. They are not essential items but theu can make it a more enjoyable experience.
This is actually worse for your drybrushing, just a way of adding dust into your paint and wearing your brushes down faster. By the time there's a couple of layers of paint on the parts the effect takes away from your drybrushing more than the desired effect in the first place as said by the king of drybrushing himself Byron
Duly noted. I will keep an eye on my brushes and paint jobs to see if there is any increased wear and tear.
hi. I also saw this- do you know a good idea for an alternative? I'd really like to do this same as this guy- a home made 2-in-1.... what else could we use as a texture for the dry pallete?

That is an option, but, it would be messy looking on my desk. Also, there isn't much texture there.
