Let us know in the comments who, you'd like to see us 50/50 a mini with, and why!
Thank you so much for this collab! Had a blast trying something new 😀
Awesome collaboration. Again please!
Absolutely man, enjoyed it so much. Your mini will sit proudly in our show display cases at the Artis Opus stand for people to see each time we travel!
Do a collab with Ninjon, you're both amazing in different fields, and the video would likely be hilarious!
This name is coming up a lot! :)
Definitely would love to see dual vids from the two of you on dry brushing + finishing!
Great video and amazing end result! I think doing a collab with Vince Venturella would be amazing! In a lot of his videos he has stated that no technique or way of painting is bad, it's just the approach and finding what works best for you as a painter. Plus with how detailed both of you are naturally in your video tutorials, I think you could really help people unlock some painting secrets that they have been struggling with!
Would love to see what Marco Frisoni would do with your dry bush base. He brings so much from the wider realm of art theory and 'whatever' technique strikes his joyous fancy at the moment.
I was very fortunate to meet with Marco Frisoni. The guy really knows his art, not just miniature painting, but classical styles, etc. The guys passion and love for the subject was amazing.
It is unsurprising:
a) How often Marco's name is appearing
b) How much love there is for him in each comment
c) We love Marco
You and Juan Hidalgo would be a brilliant combo! A master of dry brushing and a master of contrast could create a great (and speedy) miniature!
An army painting completion with Peachy from the painting phase would be great. Something like when he painted the whole Cadian box set in 24(ish) hours to see how you both approach painting armies and see if you can teach each other anything about making the process more efficient.
Marco Frisoni. His entire way of being is joyous
Marco's got to be a front-runner in terms of votes, almost like he's as lovely as he is talented :)
What an awesome collaboration with Zumikito. He is one of the channels I have learned a lot from. I would love to see a collaboration with Trovarion or Sergio Calvo.
Trovarion (Chris, right?) is coming up a lot, with good reason :)
Yes. Christoph Eichhorn is his name. He's been doing a Grimdark series recently with Space Marines. Fingers crossed this collab happens 🤞. Thanks for the excellent content Byron. Your contributions to the miniature painting community has been outstanding.
What a great video Byron, thanks to you and Zumikito for doing it.
I would love to see you do a collaboration with @Warhipster
I think of you both as very good painters who do excellent tutorials painting to a standard that us mere mortals can aspire to. You're the dry-brush master and Josh is the Contrast master. I'd love to see what a combination could achieve
I really think that Marco Frisoni (Not Just Mecha) would be a fantastic collaboration! His color theory and mixed media would be a beautiful compliment to your advanced drybrush style!
Marco's name's coming up a lot, it's almost like he's as lovely as he is talented
I'd second the suggestion to collab with Vince Venturella. I've already seen him change his approach to dry brushing, saying not to wipe the brush on tissue. At the same time his approach to shade and value is similar to what you said here about references. It would be really interesting to see how his and your techniques work together, especially late on in the painting process
Juan Hidalgo or the Infernal Brush would be very interesting collaborators to do a video with. Love your stuff!
I would love to see a Video together with Ninjon. He has a "fancy but fast" way of painting and believe that you, ninjon and we as viewers can all learn a LOT.
Your man's name is coming up a lot, he definitely does, just used 'fancy' to describe him a few comments back, his level's super-high now, and he's no stranger to working over drybrushing...
HAHA, I am just amazed at convergent evolution of model painters.
No one ever shows or tells you (except you) to use back of your offhand thumb to unload brush, or thumb nail, or dabbing the brush in your mouth to get the point back or just suck off (not like that) the paint so you can wick up the excess on the work piece etc.
There must surely be a scientific explanation to why the back of your thumb is hands down (pun intended) the worlds best blending palette?
This is something that just naturally happens with experience, but people around the world do it without a second thought or being taught to do it!
My painting is still atrocious after 20+ years of miniature painting but all the questionably 'bad habits' were always self taught and totally nailed like a pro. Go figure!
The one bad habit I have finally kicked is dabbing the brush in my mouth!
20+ years back the paints might have been toxic, but dang they tasted so much better in the 80s&90s than these nasty tasting non toxic modern paints!
P.s GW's Snakebite leather was the best tasting back in the mid 90's, close second would have to be Striking Scorpion Green!
What was your favourite flavour?
funny, your video and Zumikitos came up together in my feed.
Also, how wholesome are you? your reaction on opening it was so nice.
:D YT doing their work! Thanks man, hard not to be when some dude you admire the work of professionally finishes your minis and sends them back to you 🥰
You're both exceptional talents. Ty
Thanks buddy 🥰
It would be sweet to have you join us in the Play On Tabletop Studio one day. Tak is an avid air brusher and I have adopted a more dry brush focused painting approach (love your dry brushes by the way) we could try and convince him of what can be done with dry brushes and break him of his air brushing ways haha
Hey buddy, I'd love that :), and always up for a challenge on converting someone!
Reach out on insta buddy, happy to talk further
Marco would be a great collaboration! (Marco Frissoni)
I would love to see a collab with Marco Frisoni!
Awesome idea and very entertaining guy to work with thanks for the great idea and letting us share your reaction.
❤ trovarion!!!!!! At least you will get a fair judge and a lot of hints how to improve.
And the result will be ❤❤❤❤
This is fair, I love his analysis, and his painting :)
I came back to the hobby recently and considered excessive drybrushing and using contrasts to be an easy workaround or even cheat for beginnners. I was fully dedicated to classic glazing and highlighting but you Sir convinced me to your 80-20% giga math time spending philosophy and I am a much better person, thank you!
For a contrast master you should have a colab with Juan Hidalgo, his ‘Eavy Contrast series is godlike. Or for the memes you should talk to Duncan Rhodes.
Both you blokes are excellent. Cheers... great vid 😄
Incredible talents, the both of you. Great vids.
Collab with Trovarion. Awesome painter and explains very well. Has some very nice and refined techniques.
He's been doing some 'method' vids too, would probably fit in well with that.
What an amazing paint job!!!!! Great job Zumikito.
He did a supreme second-half, king level
This is so cool when two of your favorite painters making collaborations! Thank you for your video about dry brushing. Result is really great, and tips are helpful as always 👍🏻
A two for one deal with Squidmar Miniatures...Emil and Lukas would be awesome. When you get a bonus talented painter in the one shipped model...that feels like a great bonus to me!
Love the idea of sharing theories as work in progress and letting us participate! Also living the podcast. Can't wait to see and listen more. Welcome back to TH-cam 😊
Your work is incredible. I think you could take it step further and start using washes at the end of it and then manually highlight it. As for a 50/50 paint off I would love to see you starting with Angel Giraldez or Don Suratos.
I absolutely could, were it not for Simon here I would have done just this, it was interesting to see him carefully airbrush glazes from below for the same reasons I'd paint glazes on
I used to paint FACES with drybrushing! Drybrush techniques are a powerful tool!
I'd love to see a collab between you and Marco. Your emphasis on light and color modulation through drybrushing and his punchy oil steps are bound to make magic.
I've just picked up the series D five piece set, looks quality in the box and can't wait to give them a go in the next few days, your videos are spot on and really helpful and really making the most of them before I start using your brushes 🙌
Smear test…loved it!
😅 got one of my editor Ian notes back 'Do we keep this in?' about that
Ooooh, a contrast master would be cool.
Man what a fantastic collab though! Love your work man, keep it up!
Dana Howl would be a fun collaboration. Her colors are always so punchy and I’ve probably learned the most about glazing from her
I wonder if someone could pick my colours before I started, I thought about the approach to this a lot before contacting Simon, and that was one of the ideas.
@@ArtisOpusyou both do similar things with spectrum shifting. I dint think you’d fundamentally disagree on colors much. It would be interesting
Great work the both of you 😊
Byron's the G.O.A.T 🐐🐐🐐
Simon's convinced me (accidentally) to try and work harder to be worthy of this :)
Incredible I need to get done with my backlog before I try another big model .
What an awesome colab! love this, both videos are great :)
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks buddy 🙏
AO and Zumikito are two of my 3 favourite painting channels who have pushed me to actually try and improve my painting over the past year rather than just getting minis 'done' for gaming.
The third of the trio is Ninjon who a collab with would be amazing! 🙏🏻😁
We've got more crossover in audiences than I thought previously, so glad to find out!
We love Ninjon, who is now a fancy painter, given how ridiculous his improvement curve has been in the last year or so, this'd be great!
@@ArtisOpus that would be excellent! 😁
I like watching you both!
Squidmar I would love a collab with him. His style is amazing and I think both your styles would mesh so well together!
I'm verymuch guilty of not testing the paint, lessons learned! Thank you sir.
Glad to help man, it makes all the difference, very fast :)
Brilliant
If you ever make a sister channel where you review painted models you really liked I insist you call it "Happy British Noises".
:D I'm all for this, and not just because I want more pro painted minis I can partially accept credit for :)
Well youve alteady done my two favourite youtube painters.
Simon was a pleasure, we're so glad he said yes (and not just because of the GUO we now have 😅)
@ArtisOpus inspired me to start painting trugg finally. Very jealous of that brush set though, gonna have to hit up santa
The greatest universe crossover since the MCU. Fantastic stuff. Trovarion seems like the next opportunity to build out the painting multiverse
Would love to see a collaboration with the Tabletop Time guys. Murray in particular has such a distinctive art style and I'd love to see how that would play alongside your own techniques. Also I'm sure there's room for some more 'friendly' English / Australian rivalry and cooperation in the world!
A lot of people have already said Marco, which is a great shout, but Richard Gray would be another excellent option, he's incredible!
Hi Byron - not sure if you'll see this, but a drybrushing video topic crossed my mind, thought it might be an interesting one to explore?
We often talk about how Contrast paints are a diverse bunch, formulated differently for different colours, some are glaze-like, some are ink-like, etc. I don't think I've seen the same exploration of the properties of different paints when it comes to drybrushing, though? In part that's going to be down to how we remove as much medium as possible, and how we often only use regular layer paints. I'm not aware of any other brand that has a Dry paint range, but Citadel's Dry range is as variable as the Contrast. Some of them are like a thick mousse, Necron Compound is pure rubber that peels off in clumps, and you could butter your toast with Astorath Red.
I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on the best/worst of the range, and the benefits/drawbacks of using them as opposed to their Layer paint equivalents? And is any other paint brand out there especially suited (or unsuited) to drybrushing?
The end result was awesome zumikito’s work is just outstanding. I’d have to say I’m with him on not being a fan of dry brushing
Worth checking out his video, I think we did a god job of converting him!
If you like the end result you might be partially converted too ;). The notable thing here I think is *the time*. I don't know precisely what the combined time between us was, but for the quality of result it's very low, just about using the right techniques on the right areas...
...And having a pro polish your work, too ;)
@@ArtisOpus I don’t know, if I see him dry brushing more in the future then maybe I’d say he might of changed his mind on it . But yes I’d say it has its place and can be very effective when done correctly
What a shame that I missed the premiere, somehow I did not get a notification :/ Great idea for a video though! It looked good both ways and I actually liked your approach more as the refined one has a slighty botanical look due to some changes in the greens. But the additional work that Zumikito did is awesome, especially the plague spot on the left leg has a lot of pop :)
We were working to the wire on this one to try and both be able to release last week (you can see how late it got by the time!) hence no build up to it, apologies!
Thanks man, we worked really hard on doing our best work, a lot of it came from the base colour, we wanted the prettiest apple we could 😅
I'd love a collab between Ninjon's alter ego Daryl and yourself. The Usa vs the UK. Maybe even an online lesson... A funny spin on the normal...
Haaa, April fool's video meets tutorial, and produces chaos baby? :D Would love to
I'd love to see you work with James Wappel or Mended Brush Studio. Your dry brush techniques plus oil paint would look gorgeous.
Brilliant collab and level of information as always and I’ll throw Angel Giraldezs hat into the ring for the next one.
thats awesome. i thought that looks amazing already, then it got extra amazing. Now I want to see dark colored base coat, dry brushed values, speed paint, opaque paint details, oil wash. lol do all the things!
Great stuff, you should do this with more artists
We'd love to :D time to ask some favours
Dang I missed this. I'll check it out this weekend.
Our bad, we were both working to a deadline which was very last minute (and unsure), so we couldn't announce it, hope you enjoyed both vids!
Just watched it. Very very interesting. I feel this could be a whole new feature.
i love this
i think you should reach out to miniac and do this with him
he is always looking for new takes, techniques and ways to save time or improve a process
i think he would have a lot of love for your drybrushing and have some very insightful things to find in it
Great video Byron! Great idea, I would also suggest Vince Venturella for a technical painter and Sam Lenz as a very artistic painter.
Anyways, was great meeting you at the Spiel 2023 convention!! ❤
It would be nice to see side by side photos (or side by side spins if you want to be fancy) in addition to the before and after spin videos sequentially (that made it even tougher to compare one to the other.
I also think it put your work at a bit of comparative disadvantage for judging impact since the after result was completely painted but the before result still had many elements incomplete or still just primed.
Agree on all accounts here, we were pretty pushed at the end to meet our deadline, your first point would have been in the video if it weren't for this.
Yup on #2, that's OK, though. I didn't want to basecoat them or anything to make sure Simon received black-blank-canvases, it does make a real difference, though.
I’d love to see a collab with Tommie Soule, aka The Miniature Painting Tutor. Really enjoying all of your content!
Tommie's a local for me! Manchester crew assemble :D
Very inspiring Video and nice collab betwenn two of my favorid painters and idols! Would love to see you with @Ninjon
Wouldn't we all! Unfortunately, I have to go through cousin Darryl, who Jon uses as a PA, and uses DXLs as shaving brushes...
Joking ofc, we'd love to work with either ;)
Really cool surprise seeing this collab - Zumikito is great!
I'd love to see you collab with Trovarion. He's won over a dozen golden demons, gives great feedback, and is super nice!
I really respect his work, I don't get much time to watch tutorials, but Simon's and his are two of the channels I make time for most.
He's an insufferable condescending prick. Ninjon seems like a genuine nice chap though
Cracking video as ever Byron. I did see Duncan Rhodes use a tissue to wipe off paint when dry brushing and obviously had to shout “amateur” at him. Luckily it was on TH-cam so he couldn’t hear me. Maybe you need to collaborate (educate😮!) him 😂
I'd love to see a video with a speed painter!
Love the videos, I'm still trying to get there drybrushing, but still find I'm getting waaaaaay too much paint in my brushes
Keep that brush vertical, don't scoop. I believe!
A speed painter would be legit, my first love 😬
Great collab and an amazing result! Would love another collab with Trovarion. He's such a great painter and very good at feedback.
I have huge admiration for his content and quality (goes without saying given how many awards he won I guess 😅).
So many details jump off the model after Zumikito did his handywork!
Maybe DD Builds as a collab? He doesn't some pretty mental freehand stuff.
The minis behind you man are still my most favoured minis ive seen painted
The colour composition is amazing
Try collab with squidmar
Oh thanks so much dude, I've got quite a lot in that scheme, it's probably my best painted army... But is from a decade back when I had more time to paint for myself :)
@@ArtisOpus most welcome man, ive appreciated a lot of the videos you do its inspiring
You have a lot of talent
Do you go to any of the painting competitions or anything like thst to see winners paint jobs?
I missed the only one i know where i live, victoria aus shame causs squidmar went to it so did jazza
Ive never actually seen anyone elses paint jobs done in person sucks i missed it lol
Since you've already done the one I would of suggested I'd say the only option left would be the strict technomancer who is Vincey V
Warhammer LSV is coming up a lot here! With good reason, such respect for his approach, he's an institution of the YT painting scene, too.
This is awesome, I have my GUO still unassembled, but this gave me the inspiration and now I want to assemble and paint mine.
The most fun collaboration would be with Duncan 'Two Thin Coats' Rhodes. He started explaining drybrushing the way you do it (with moist domed brushes) and your styles would look amazing when combined.
Thanks Byron
Would love to see a collaboration with Groundeffected. He paints larger scale 3d printed statues but draws a lot of inspiration from mini painting. It would be cool to see your dry brushing techniques applied to larger 1:6 or 1:4 scale models.
nice collab!
supergreen💚💚
infernalbrush....
because one his voice is silky smooth and we need more of it.. .
and 2 for the fact he is a god of eavy metal :P
He is wonderful, I wonder what we could do here to match up our extremely differing styles...
Really enjoying the videos. I'm brand new to painting and decided to pick it up to help me relax. Lol to find out everything is a little overwhelming in trying to figure out all that is needed. From all the different palettes to brushes.
Pretty much watching your videos exclusively. Any suggestions on where to start with supplies? Would love to get stuff from your store, but being new I'm not sure jumping into the deep end of the pool is the best way to start.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey buddy, welcome to the hobby, it's one of the best meditative pastimes out there IMO. It can definitely be a little intimidating to start though.
Supplies from our store - depending on budget I'd recommend:
Series D+ Set
XXL Palette
Size 3 Series S brush (it will do everything, it's very tough, and if you like it you can always add a 5 brush S set in the future.
You could also look at something like the Fauxhammer set and an XXL palette, that's a mixed one, so you get a little bit of everything brush-wise.
On a minimal budget grab an S3 and a D Medium+ :)
If you have any further questions let us know in another separate comment on a recent video, it's very easy for replies to get lost!
In the meanwhile I'd really recommend the first section of this video for some very solid general drybrush tips explained thoroughly:
th-cam.com/video/_OSAbpLhY-0/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the comment!
I can think of only one name to add to the hat. Bohun! That would be a fun collab to see.
Also, what would happen if you max matt paints with gloss medium. Could that help the paint, even when you make it more transparent doing so?
So glad he's back on the scene, tried reaching out actually but I think he stays pretty quiet in terms of social media apart from posting, I have huge respect for him and what he brought to the scene/my style personally.
This video pointed out something I should have caught myself. Gloss vs matte when it comes to drybrushing. So I have a question. I usually drybrush 'light' onto my minis starting with primed black and working through several shades of grey until a last bit of white. This inevitably produces some chalky bits, but since I go back over first with speedpaint and then normal paint for detail and weathering, it's not usually that bad. But, I think things would look even better if I used a gloss paint. So my question: what would be the best gloss black primer, gloss white paint, and several different shades of gloss grey to move up between them?
You don't want to go as far as gloss (it as its own issues), but you can absolutely start with satin paints, and/or paints with a lower quantity of white in them.
Check out our slapchop video (bloodthirster) for more on this, you touched on it, but the speedpaint or wash stage will knock back chalkiness, however there's more you can do, as you guessed.
Quick 3 points:
Chaos black primer (satin
step 1 - use a colour instead of grey, e.g. on bloodthirster we used word bearers red
throughout - use dampening pad to carefully and predictably involve a bit of moisture, this keeps things smoother.
Well noted man, you're on the brink of a load of quality improvements that will barely add any time to your painting, good luck!
For a contrast master you should work with warhipster. He does amazing contrast work.
Came here to say the same thing! :)
Sam Lenz. The wizard of desaturated paint schemes.
I cant believe no one has mentioned doing a collab with brushstroke yet...ive yet to watch a video of his where i havent learned aome new trick or technical skill i didnt find unneeded or unnecessary to know
I'd love to see a collaboration between yourself and the person who taught Rob the Honest Wargamer to Slapchop, Louise Sugden.
Would also love to see you work with Vince Ventruella, as he is very much a "best tool for the job" painter and doesn't look down on drybrushing.
I would love to see a collab with Ninjon or possibly Alex at 52 miniatures.!!
I love cross over episodes
Would love to see you collaborate with Juan Hidalgo, both of you have been massive influences on how I've learned to make use of contrast paint. Would love to see a collaboration between the two of you
Great video from 2 of my favourite content creators. Talking about favourites I think a collab with the josh the warhipster would be epic👍
A collab with Sorastro would be must-watch tv for me.
Great Collab from you both. I'd love to see you try to convince Sergio Calvo to try some drybrushing 😂
You should collab with Juan Hidalgo THE contrast master himself!
Let’s see a multi artist - same piece show down. Each on their own channel - using their techniques - paint the same mini - then a colab contest where the viewers cast votes. - one step further - the voting can be done for a charity with the models as a give away.
It should get massive different artists, serves a cause, exposure to all different channels for crossover content.
Such a great idea for a video…. So many thoughts about who I’d like to see you do another one with…. Lyla mini witch, Rogue hobbies Louise, Trovarion, Peachey and the Swedish Squidmar boys Emil and Lukas
Awesome collaboration. How about Trovarian. His grim dark marine technique is incredible.
A lot of his work is very stipple friendly, too!
great videos watched both great collab, i was going to suggest Peachy or Ninjon and an interesting one would be with Emma from Dice and Demons love her style of painting.
Sam Lenz! Because he is super skilled but super chill and humble. Would be a great collab.
Love to see you collaborate with a grim dark artist to see what can be achieved. Like grim dark compendium
Definitely love to see you work with Juan hidalgo and the war hipster
