Congratulations on a splendid explanation of the Line of Succession. I wanted to point out two things: (i) The Reformed Succession to the Crown Act 2013 removed the disqualification of Royal Family members marrying Roman Catholics, thus Royals who had married Roman Catholics, but who themselves had not converted to Roman Catholicsm, were reinstated to the Line of Succession eg HRH Prince Michael of Kent. (ii) Prior to her marriage with Peter Phillips (The Late Queen`s first grandson) in 2008, Autumn Kelly converted to the Church of England, ensuring her husband did not lose his place in the Line of Succession. The Reformed Succesion to the Crown Act 2013 was irrelevant in this instance, as it did not exist.

Yes, Lady Davina (not Davinia) has two children, whose father is Maori. Senna was the first person whose place in the succession was directly impacted by the change to Absolute Primogeniture; her younger brother Tane was born after her but did not displace her. Senna is Senna Kowhai (pronounced Korf-eye) and Tane is Tane Mahuta (pronounced Tarn-e (with a short 'e' sound) Mahuta (pronounced Mah-hoo-ta). Incidentally a kowhai is a tree with beautiful yellow bell-shaped flowers and Tane Mahuta is the Maori God of the Forest, as well as a specific giant totara tree in the Northland forest in New Zealand. Kia ora!
Very informative and enlightening. One correction the title Defender of the Faith, was given to Henry V111 by the Pope, for Henry's thesis on religion against Martin Luther. This was before The break with the Roman catholic church
The "original" title of Defender of the Faith was given by the pope to Henry VIII, but once he broke with Rome it was removed. A new Title "Defender of the Faith" was given by the newly created Church of England as the Monarch was the defacto Governor of the Church (of England) and the one defending the Church. That is the meaning behind the Title used today. A lot of Catholics seem to get snide about the title, but the Catholic title is certainly not in use. It was removed.

Defender of the Faith was a title Pope Leo X gave to Henry VIII back in 1521 for his defense of the Roman Catholic Church against the threat posed by Martin Luther. It represented Henry's piety and loyalty to the Church. When Henry broke with the Catholic Church and established the Church of England with himself as its head, he kept the title. It has been passed down to every Monarch since 1544.

Henry VII came to power by slaying the crowned King Richard III whose corpse was found under a parking lot in Leicester just a couple of years ago. There can be no doubt that Henry VII was an illegitimate usurper of the throne.
Small correction, Senna and Tāne aren't of asian descent. Their father is Māori, which is a people who came from the pacific region. Also their names are pronounced "senn-ah" and "tah-nay" You're missing the flat accent (ā) in Tāne's name. Their mother's name is Davina, not Davinia. You've also got Edward listed as Duke of Cambridge for some reason. I thought maybe that was there because HMTQ offered Edward that Dukedome but he wanted Earl of Wessex due to a Shakespear character with the same title. But then you didn't talk about it so maybe not.
Small note: Queen Victoria had no _full_ siblings, i.e. no siblings who had the same mother (Victoria of Saxe-Coberg-Saalfeld) and father (Edward, Duke of Kent & Strathearn) as she did. She did, however, have two half siblings from her mother's first marriage to Emich Karl, Prince of Leiningen, Carl (Prince of Leiningen after his father died in 1814) and Feodora (Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg). Everyone seems to forget about her two (German!) older half siblings, and that she was raised with her first language being German, until John Conroy realised how bad it would look if a future monarch (that they were trying to distance from the licentious, improvident Georgians, aka her grandparents, uncles, &c, who were much hated for being so very German and _"un-English")_ to retain the German-ness, via her accent, that was a calling card of her predecessors. That said, she and Albert preferred to converse in German, as she was very much a native speaker. (People tend to forget that the reason Prussia and all those minor german states and monarchies existed is that Germany is _a lot fekning bigger than the UK,_ especially England alone (because the world seems to forget that Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland are wholeass different countries to England, and "British" is not really an identity-well, it is, but it's like when you realise that "American", whilst usually used to refer to the people of the USA, can technically include any country south of-and including-Canada). Anyway, TL;DR: Victoria wasn't an only child, and please stop claiming she was.
Interestingly, Germany in the early 20th century was ruled by grandkids from both Victoria and Feodora. Kaiser Wilhelm II was Victoria's grandson and Empress Augusta (Wilhelm's wife) was Feodora's granddaughter.

I watched a series on TH-cam recently which you can find by searching "The Father-in-Law of Europe. It follows the line of King Christian IX of Denmark, Queen Margrethe's Great,Great,Grandfather, who's 6 children all married into royal houses all over Europe. It's a fascinating series that follows each of his children's descendants down to the present (or nearly) day. Of course, many of the children's children became Kings or Queens themselves, including Queen Alexandra of UK, Queen Maria Fedorova (Dagmar) of Russia, plus the monarchs of Sweden, Norway, etc. It gets rather confusing, but a genealogical tree, such as you've provided here, would be most helpful. Just an idea for your channel. I've watched the series several times, and it never fails to enthrall, because the descendants tell the family stories in their own words.
There is a documentary of queen Victoria and she put every one of her children married kings and or to in every royal house in Europe so lots of riyals have done this also queen Maria Theresa of Austria queen marie antionettes mother also has lots of children married into other royal houses as well
Considering William's significant popularity in the UK I don't think Wales is going to vote to bar him from being their prince of Wales and I predict that as long as he behaves himself, and all indications thus far is that he will, George will also not be barred from being Prince of Wales by the Welsh people. Though I think it would help matters if George had some Welsh ancestry. He probably does as most Brits have at least a little Welsh DNA.
Most brits have Welsh dna? Eh where’d you get that from😂 I’m 0% Welsh, like almost all of Scotland and Northern Ireland, and only small area of England has welsh dna as far as I know - excluding the odd cases here and there of course
Edward of Caernarvon, although he didn't have Welsh ancestory he was just born there. His parents were Edward I and Elenore of Castile, not quite Wales.
Since Henry VII, all monarchs have Welsh blood, even James VI and I (Scotland and England) has Welsh blood being the great-great-grandson of Henry VII. So... meh! Oh, and I'm Welsh. I'm fine with it. Kinda. My family is descended from Llewelyn the Great. So... I'd not mind them throwing the title away in my direction... but that's not going to happen, lol.
I read somewhere that William will not have an investiture ceremony to officially become Prince of Wales. It's allegedly seen as a very outdated ceremony; William will still hold the title though
Autumn Kelly converted to Church of England before her marriage to Peter Philips. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013 is what eliminated the prohibition of marrying a Catholic.
Queen Anne to have all of her children die is just sooooooooooo sad and heartbreaking, yet she had to be strong as a Queen. As an Australian, lm not a Royalist but god bless her R.I.P. Plus l have always thought Princess Anne would have been a great Queen like her mother.
The Duchess of Kent retired from official duties some years ago and then converted to Catholicism, which is probably why her children and some grandchildren are catholic. The Duke of Kent continued to carry out official duties including giving out the Wimbledon trophies until 2021 when Catherine took over as patron to the All England Club. He was the chancellor of the University of Surrey when I was a student there some 20 years ago. The Duke of Gloucester still carries out official duties and he walked behind the Queen’s coffin during the procession to lying to state and the processions for her funeral.
The title "Defender of the Faith" was awarded to Henry VIII by the Pope when Henry wrote a rebuttal to Martin Luther in the 1520s. "Defensor Fidei" was not a title created by Henry VII, he just continued to use it in the Anglican Church and passed it down to protestant rulers.
Lots of English people have some Royal Blood on them. Well, counting how much Charlie #2 and Edward #7 played around, I can believe that. Maybe you should make a video about Charles II and the Girls, and how, even when he didn't have any legitimate children and the crown passed to his brother, his lineage will be reinstated on the throne once William is King as Diana actually descended from one, maybe two, of Charles II's illegitimate lines.
@@patrickjeffers7864 the heiress of the real one is Hereditary Grand Duchess of Liechtenstein, a Bavarian princess who attended the late Queen's funeral.
In the second half of the 17th century, it was normal for a European monarch to have "mistresses" and numerous illegitmate children. Charles II just behaved as a monarch was supposed to behave in his time.
You've done an excellent job at explaining just about everything here. I would like to mention one minor point that might not be clear to some viewers, though: Charles is the King of the UK, several territories (such as Bermuda, Gibraltar, St. Helena, Tristan da Cunha, Pitcairn, etc.), and several countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, PNG, Solomon Islands, Jamaica, etc. that happen to be members of the Commonwealth association. There are countries that are members of the Commonwealth that have stopped having the British monarch as their head of state (Barbados), as well as countries that joined recently and have never been ruled by Britain. The Commonwealth is a trade and cultural organization sort of like the United Nations, so countries can join, cancel and rejoin the Commonwealth as they like. The Queen was the chosen head of the Commonwealth but a year or two before she died she resigned this duty and suggested Prince Charles should be the head, which he was elected at the next meeting. Now he is king and he's still the head of the Commonwealth, because he was elected not solely because he's king or because he's also the king of several of its member nations. Though unlikely, he could be voted out as Commonwealth head. Also, he could be voted out as head of any country (such as Jamaica) that no longer wants him as king. In every country where he is king, Charles selects a Governor General (usually at the suggestion of the elected prime minister) to represent the king in that country. That's why you will often see the governor general doing ceremonial duties such as declaring open the Olympics in the country, rather than the more well known Prime Minister, if the monarch is not available. (In the case of Barbados, the first president of the country happens to be the woman who was the last governor general, as she was elected to this position.) So, to recap, a country doesn't automatically have Charles as their king just because they're members of the Commonwealth or because Charles is the head of the Commonwealth. They have him as king because they were originally ruled by the UK and haven't voted him out as head of state.

in Portuguese peerage 3 female breaks are allowed until the title reverts to the Crown, so - under that rule - Princess Beatrix, Lady Sienna would be Duchesses of York, then, if Lady Sienna only has daughters, her 1st daughter would be the last Duchess of York, but, if she has sons, the dukedom would descend in the male line until a 4th daughter without brothers isn't allowed to inherit it.
Can we acknowledge that Henry’s marriage to Elizabeth of York, his mother’s royal descents and the battle he won proved his legitimacy and he wouldn’t have been accepted by the English otherwise.
And his mother was married to his father though neither were considered to be legitimate heirs to the throne. So he was legitimate in the sense that this term meant at the time.
We all know about the British crown jewels, but we know nothing about other countries royal regalias so please could you make a video about Royal regalias around the world.... 🙏🥰
An interesting thing is that the “absolute primogeniture” change could have resulted in a very warped system had things been different. As a Commonwealth, each member ‘state’ needed to pass the same laws in their own jurisdiction and had they all not changed their legislation, could have resulted in two different heads of state within the Commonwealth countries (and even states within the same country). Assuming for a moment, Charles, William and George all died in an accident together, we could have ended up with Queen Charlotte in some Commonwealth countries and King Louis in others. I remember a news article how Queensland (Australia) reserved its right as a sovereign state to legislate their own line of succession when it came to abolishing the male-preference primogeniture. Queensland officially joined the rest of the world in 2014 when it adopted the line of succession the rest of the commonwealth followed, but had they not, it could have led to Australia having two different sovereigns.
Prince Michael of Kent lost his position in the succession when he married the Catholic Marie (current Princess Michael of Kent). When Queen Elizabeth changed the Letters Patent before the birth of Prince George, the rule about marrying a Catholic was changed which reinstated Prince Michael. However, although someone in the succession can marry a Catholic and retain their place in the queue, no Catholic can be King or Queen.
@@janblackhurst1652 yes but Autumn Kelly converted to Anglicanism before her wedding so Peter Philips did not marry a Catholic. Also the law doesn't apply to only Catholics but all other faiths. To be in the line of succession you have to be Anglican.
Apparently Charles is know stripping the royal family’s titles and privileges. All those useless Senior royals will be stripped off their titles and won’t be getting any privileges
He and Harry both are, however, it seems likely that King Charles will change the Counsellors of State to only those working Royals which will eliminate Andrew, Harry and Beatrice. I can see the new Counsellors as Camilla (his spouse), William, Edward and Anne.
I doubt very much that Prince Louis will received the traditional title of the second son of a monarch, Duke of York, given Andrew's legacy. But I'd be willing to bet that Charles III's decision to give the title of Duke of Edinburgh to Prince Edward was a clever bit of future planning. Most likely Edward will have passed on by the time Louis would be thinking of getting married, and as the title will not be inherited by Edward's son, James, that title would be available for Louis instead of Duke of York.
13:00 It is not strictly true that dukedoms cannot be inherited by women. Daughters of sonless dukes (and other peers) have inherited the title in the past, either because the title was created with a "remainder" for female inheritance or one was added when it became clear that no further children were likely to be born and that the title would otherwise go extinct. Princess Alexandra, a female line granddaughter of Edward VII, became Duchess of Fife when her father, the Duke of Fife, passed away with no sons. Her father was given the title (he was already Earl of Fife) as he had married Princess Louise. While I am not aware of a woman being created a countess, marchioness or duchess, given that those titles have been inherited by women on occasion and that women are created baronesses as life peerages, it would seem possible that a woman could be created a duchess, etc., in her own right.
@@G-4xxbxoy Yes, it will, when Edward passes. I wonder why Charles decided to do it that way. As I remember, it had been the wish of both parents that Edward would become Duke of Edinburgh.

Pity their not good at pronunciation....
Changed the faith, kept the title.

There is speculation that at his coronation, King Charles will change it to 'Defender of the Faiths'. Will need to wait and see.
@@janblackhurst1652 It wouldnt make much sense since the king of england is literally the head of the anglican church, aswell as a political title its also a religious one, thats why catholics cant be monarchs, and though there is no specific law, I dont think muslims or jews could be too.

5:45 Prince Edward is not the “Duke of Cambridge”. He’s the Earl of Wessex (and Forfar).
Charles granted Edward the title of Duke of Edinburgh for Edward's lifetime. James will now be known as the Earl of Wessex.
Henry VII was not illegitimate. He won the monarchy by Richard III'S death in battle. His own lineage was a bit dicey
William III was invited to reign alongside his wife
As I remember, Henry's descent was through John of Gaunt (one of Edward III's sons), but I will have to double-check that.
Hi, I love how comprehensive your videos are! Can you do a video about the Orders of Precedence in the United Kingdom?

Hello Kathy, how are you doing today.
Henry VII was NOT illegitimate. He came from an illegitimate line. But, he himself, was not illegitimate.
Well he was born inside a legal marriage, so he was not a "bastard", but he WAS illegitimate because his blood line and relation to the crown was not "pure". It's not the same
They were legitimized, however they were not 'allowed' to succeed or become a ruler.
Well he married THE legitimate heiress

So 2nd cousins married. Is that correct? And their children would then be a bit more than just 3rd cousins.
In terms of succession, she was an only child.
she was the only child of both her parents, the legitimate one for the throne
You are saying ALOT, without saying ALOT!!

Correction... Autumn Kelly while raised Catholic was received into the Church of England before her marriage. So Peter wouldn't have been excluded.
The rule of excluding people who married Catholics was changed with the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013.

Hello Mary, how are you doing.
Wow that was a lot of information crazy how it's all kept in order with who is who and who receives a title and who does not.
Hello Angel, how are you doing today.
The investiture ceremony was only invented in the 20th century and only 2 princes of Wales had one
New Expungements and Pardons as well no doubt. Im sure he's relieved.
Correct. Many previous English Kings also were granted this title by Popes.
Fascinating! Cleared up a lot of things for me as an American.

Excellent and informative vlog - many thanks.
Henry VIII did not create the title “Defender of the Faith” for himself. He was awarded the title in 1521 by Pope Leo X.
in Portuguese peerage 3 female breaks are allowed until the title reverts to the Crown, so - under that rule - Princess Beatrix, Lady Sienna would be Duchesses of York, then, if Lady Sienna only has daughters, her 1st daughter would be the last Duchess of York, but, if she has sons, the dukedom would descend in the male line until a 4th daughter without brothers isn't allowed to inherit it.
Hopefully, show George the fifth daughter, Mary, and her descents in an upcoming video.
Oooh, yes please.😌France and Russia especially.😌
I would love to learn more about the other monarchs. Such as Japan and Spain.
I'm getting dizzy! Lindsay how did you do all that? You must have been up all night!
Prince Harry had his birthday on 15 September, 1 week after his Grandmothers death-
This is a nice example of making it up as you go.
Autumn Kelly converted to anglicanism before marrying Peter Philips (Meghan Markle also converted before her wedding).
Markle didn't !
this is an amazing family, thanks for sharing this vita information with us, nice one for sharing
Is Andrew Windsor still a Counsellor of State? How could he possibly be a potential substitute for the king if he's been banned from public functions?
Yes, he is still a Counsellor of State
@@richardhutchinson5546 Yikes 😱
Apparently Charles is know stripping the royal family’s titles and privileges. All those useless Senior royals will be stripped off their titles and won’t be getting any privileges
I think/hope that’ll change. There’s been talk of Andrew and Harry being relieved of this duty.
There is a precedent for that as Queen Victoria made her 2nd son Prince Alfred Duke of Edinburgh
**Corection Charles did NOT inherit the title of Prince of Wales from Prince Phillip.
Why are counsellors of state 2-4 and 6-7 all CHILDREN? Prince George would have to step in for Charles if William wasn’t available?
I'm a descendant of Edward III as well via Edmund, 1st Duke of York
You are amazing! This is so much easier to understand! Blessings!
you should do one for Japan
I really want Princess Kako of Akishino to be empress of Japan
Same
Japan is going to have to do something fast as they are running out of male heirs to the throne.
@@janblackhurst1652 I wanted to date Princess Kako so then Maybe I could be the Claudius of Japan
@@unisangalaxystudio what-
@@clairefordzetterstrom9973 😅 just my imagination I always wanted to be Emperor, but I think Japan should let women be empress too like the UK.
Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex became Duke of Edinburgh
The title is only for Edward's lifetime. It won't descend to James, who will be styled as Earl of Wessex.
@@gidzmobug2323Title Duke of Edinburgh will be revert back to the crown
@@G-4xxbxoy Yes, it will, when Edward passes. I wonder why Charles decided to do it that way. As I remember, it had been the wish of both parents that Edward would become Duke of Edinburgh.
@@gidzmobug2323 So it can remain a Royal Dukedom.
When The Duke of Kent and The Duke of Gloucester eventually die, their Dukedoms will cease being Royal Dukedoms.
Thank you for this. Always appreciated!
Thank you so much for your videos! I would love to learn more about other current queens, like the queen of Denmark. 😊
Considering she us the oldest European monarch now, there should be more media attention on them, if they wish to be in the spotlight.
One interesting fact about Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II is that she is an amateur Tolkien scholar, loves "The Lord of The Rings" and herself translated the entire series from English to Danish.
This was a great video. Thank you !!
The plural of Princess Royal is Princesses Royal. Great stuff, though.
I really enjoyed this. I remember my Grandma talking about Hanover lady and said we, meaning My Mom( Grandma's daughter) my sister and I were great-great, etc of the Hanover lady( sorry I for the life me I cannot remember the name you said). I always remember Grandma talking about the Hanovers.
My cousin-in-law is George III great-great Granddaughter. She could be the late Queen's twin. Then again so could my Grandma.
Could you please show the line of succession from those who ancestors moved to Canada, then later the United States. I would be very grateful.
@Brea , what does that have to do with what I texted?!
Hello Elizabeth, how are you doing today.
I read this as "Loyalty 101" and now I'm disappointed.
