Seen a lot of videos on you tube saying that Levi's jeans made in UK are not vintage because production in U.S stopped in 2002. Implying that this is the year they started making them outside of the U.S and that only U.S made Levi's should be considered vintage. They made Levi's in Scotland from 1979 (a million pairs per week at their height) til early 2000s so it's absolute nonsense to suggets this. If they made jeans in Haiti or Lesotho for example in the 80s then they would also be considered vintage. Place of production has no impact on vintage status. It's the year. Great video by the way. This sort of content is very useful. You should expand on the label info.

I need to find the date on some 501s my wife got me at a thrift shop. They're so freaking soft and comfortable, and cut perfectly -- newer 501s just don't fit the same. I would sell a kidney to find a few more pairs.

Thanks for posting this - all the other videos were covering only vintage - I wanted to know about modern date codes so this helped. Just to add another data point I just bought a few pairs of 501's from Amazon and the are all marked "CW=4420" so maybe that would put them being made sometime in the 44th week of 2020 (in Mexico) and then sold within 47 days of manufacture by Amazon. (44 x 7 days week would be the 308th day so that would have been November 3rd at the latest and they shipped on December 20th so day 355 and 355 minus 308 equals 47) if that isn't too OCD

Good to see such a video. Just what I've been wanting for a while. In relation to the older pair of 517s, your suggestion that the latter two digits of the middle number could be a year might be right. Just went through my pile of Levi's and two older pairs of 501s lack the CW code but do have one similar to the 517. In my case the relevant digits are 2799 and 2803. Have you tried emailing Levi's about this?

As another comment has said, the number 20 before 16 represents the 20th week of the year (May). The older pair of 501's with the 94 does represent the year. I cant say for sure as i would have to see them in person but the other 501's that you say you purchased at a dept. store, may not be authentic. Telling the difference between the bogus 501's that have the tag in the middle of the inside of the waistband that says "501" I know for sure there are fakes that usually state they are made in Mexico, not the case with yours. Ultimately all fakes are modeled after something legitimate so yours could be the real thing actually I have no reason not to believe you so they are the real thing but when it comes to those with the 501 in the middle of the inside waistband the best thing to do if possible is to feel the denim, feel the weight of the buttons and spelling errors etc. Watch out for the Thai fakes, those are far away the best knock offs being made today. I have encountered both the thai fakes and the ones i mentioned that were made in mexico. Levis knows they have a huge problem with counterfeit jeans and for obvious reasons do not want to publicize it, Urban Outfitters was caught unknowingly selling fakes, it isnt hard to imagine some popping up at Macy's. Most people would not know the difference. I would approximate at least %10 of levis sold on ebay are fake and the seller doesnt know it.

My Levis I bought at an antique store with the leather patch rubbed off. The inner tag (there is only one and it feels like stiff paper) reads:
    98% COTTON
    2% LYCRA SPANDEX
    MADE IN GUATEMALA
    CARE ON REVERSE
    550 TM
    RELAXED FIT
    TAPERED LEG
    6 PET . M
    - reverse -
    5498CR17
    “Standard care instruction”
    WPL 423
    695 53
    977 (number on button) 1201 550413-B
    42551-3391
Sorry for the detail, I am just dying to know what these are! I am confused because of the one tag deal and the fact that is was made not the US, but in Guatemala. (There is no evidence of any tag cutting or wear) The ink on the tag is black. All the other details you mentioned about the buttons and so forth match up.
If you can help or need any more information in order to give me a lead, I would love to hear! Thanks!
