  • 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R vs 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 review by The Straight Pipes. The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 R is putting down 526 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque from a 5.2L Flat Plane Crank V8 and the 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby 350 is putting down 306hp from a 289ci V8. At $150,000 CAD, would you take the 2020 Shelby GT350R over the $600,000 CAD 1965 Shelby GT350?

That would be interesting. The 69 charger was super under rated at 425hp. I’ve heard stories that people recently built them to factory spec and have been able to pull over 500hp on a dyno. Crazy. I think a 426 hemi with the torqueflite with a shift kit would give a modern 392 a run for its money compared to the GT350s

Back in 1966, I purchased a 1966 Shelby GT350 (carry over version) from S&C Ford in San Francisco. I had to sell it two years later because of......Viet Nam service. Fifty years later, I purchased a 2016 Shelby GT350 from Fremont Ford, so I have driven both cars. Just to correct something you stated, back in 1965, Shelby built 37 competition models, which ford decided to build the same number for their 2015 introduction of the new Shelby Mustang. The newer model is much easier to drive, better performance and better handling. The 65-66 models were basically race cars that they made mods to in order to sell it as a street machine.

Growing up, one of my friend's dad's had a Shelby GT350-H. Luckily my friend wasn't very good at driving stick, so I got to drive it a few times. IMO the Black with gold stripes was much better looking than the traditional white with blue stripes on the Shelby GT350.

I've got a 65 289 coupe and they're a great joy to drive, and like you said everyone loves them, even over much more expensive cars. My recommendation, buy a non-special edition original mustang, coupes are the cheapest, to save your cash as every part in the world is available to convert or add features as you like! Great video Pipes, as usual.
