Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

If you haven't witnessed Jack Lemmon's performance in The China Syndrome, you really must. He is SO incredibly good, you can see what he's going through by the look on his face.

He was also fantastic in Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Save The Tiger, Missing, Glengarry Glen Ross...one of the greatest actors.

I love listening to Jack tell a story. It doesn't matter what the story is or if the story has any merit or not, Jack tells it so well it just doesn't matter. He was such a delight to listen to. We miss you Jack, but your legacy will outlive us all.
Hey Gordo fine assessment of Jack Lemmon. He could do it all from Pulver to Felix Unger and my favorite performance from him as Professor Fate from when I was 6 years old.
Couldn't pay this man enough today to act. Unbelievable talent.

Lemmon is being modest. He was a member of the Harvard class of 1947, where he was in Navy ROTC and the Dramatic Club. Afterward he actually served as a Navy ensign

The most underrated actor (considering he won two Oscars) in Hollywood from the late 50s to the late 90s ... an incredible body of work!
Under-rated? No way. In his day he was a household name, and well respected by movie goers everywhere.
Back when talk show hosts were good interviewers who listened with interest, reacted genuinely and let their guests tell their stories without slapping the table and laughing hysterically. Dick Cavett was awesome, and Jack Lemmon...I have no words.

And back in the day when talk show hosts did real interviews and comedy and left the politics to others. Cavett was one of the all time greats.

God bless Dick Cavett! During the many iterations of his talk shows, he interviewed those that were at the apex of their professions. Painters, writers, actors, musicians, directors...a cornucopia of creative people. His knowledge and interviewing style were unmatched on network TV. Here on TH-cam, viewers can see an historical parade of intellectual conversations and talented artists. Thanks a million, Dick!

K Kampy : it does have some very great funny scenes yet it also has a scene that moves me to tears each time I have watched this movie. Excellent film, a classic.

@@kkampy4052 Maybe unexpected in the way his death came, but the death itself was not. Mr. Roberts wanted to feel he was a larger part of the war effort and had accepted the risk. He knew he could die and went anyways. That's what made it all the more tragic. He fought to join in the fight and paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Jack told a story on Carson's show about visiting Edmond Gwenn at a nursing home when he was in palliative care. He knew how much discomfort Mr. Gwenn was in and said so. Mr. Gwenn said "yes, dying is hard, but not as hard as acting in a comedy". He had just finished saying this and then died right then and there. Heard that story once 40 years ago and just the way Jack told it made it unforgettable.
Just a couple of years after this show, I worked at a fancy hotel as a valet and Jack Lemmon was staying there to attend a local celebrity golf tournament. He pulled up in a brand new Mercedes Benz and I helped him take his golf clubs and luggage out of the trunk and I parked his car. He was very nice, so that's my story on him.

In my opinion, the whole cast in Glengarry Glen Ross was amazing! My favorite interaction is between Dave Moss and Ricky Roma -- the "farewell to the troops." :-)

Any fans of his who haven't seen "Glengarry Glenn Ross " , please see it. His portrayal of someone who's in a jam and incredibly desperate was absolutely brilliant.

If you have never seen the movie “Good Neighbor Sam” it’s truly worth watching. Jack’s dancing alone is a great reason to see it, hilarious.
So refreshing to see an interviewer like Dick Cavett who knew his job very well, and a guest as interesting to listen to as Jack Lemmon.

He was not only one of the greatest actors but he was generally excellent at choosing great scripts and films. I would say "The Apartment" is about as good as number of other brilliant Lemmon films like "Days of Wine and Roses," Save the Tiger," "The China Syndrome" and "Missing."

That was a good one. Also in Short Cuts, he was the standout actor for me. Any attempt by me to describe it would likely ruin it.
Saw this movie shown on the fantail of the USS North Carolina battleship in Wilmington, NC, several years ago. Wonderful experience.

Lemmon easily walked the fine line between comedy and tragedy. He inspired the likes of Spacey, Hanks, Cranston, Bateman and Cooper.

I never watched the remake and most likely never will even though I like Steve Martin.
I read somewhere Mr. Lemmon almost got seriously hurt when they blew the sewer (with air) and the manhole cover at the church, and when it fell it came close to hitting him.
You can clearly see how close it was! I just may watch it tonight now.

This was a great show
Jack Lemmon was born a few weeks before my Dad and he died a few weeks before my Dad.
I saw him on Broadway playing James Tyrone in Eugene O’Neill’s classic “Long Day’s Journey Into Night”. It’s an epic role and a 3 & 1/2 play. He was magnificent!
BTW, his sons were played by still unknowns Peter Gallagher and Kevin Spacey.
Another BTW, Patrick MacNee and Andy Williams were also at that performance.
I was nine years old when this was recorded. What a great story. Mr. Roberts is a great movie.

Funny when Jack mentions he kept a low profile at university. In Mr. Roberts, the scene where Pulver first meets the captain, played by Cagney, he asks Pulver how long he's been aboard because he doesn't know him. Pulver replies, " Fourteen months. " The captain is astounded! " FOURTEEN months?! " Talk about keeping off the radar!
An all-time great actor who is too little remembered

I love Mister Roberts, a great film and it has an extra feature I like, MY NAME! It's great that the movie with my name is an excellent movie. After all, SOME people have the same name as that terrible Kevin Costner movie, Mr. Brooks!

One of my favorite lines from the movie was what Ensign Pulver was gonna use in the firecracker he was gonna "stick under the old man's bunk." I'm hoping I get it right.

I had read that there were a great deal of unease on the set between supporting actor Lemmon and the star Fonda..
I also enjoyed the sequel Ensign Pulver. Had a fabulous cast. Robert Walker as pulver, Ives, as the capt., Jack Nicholson, Walter Matthau, Larry Hagman, Peter Marshall,....
As a kid I watched this as a TV movie of the week. First movie I ever remember laughing out loud. Roll me over in the clover do it again.
I love the scene in Ensign Pulver where the Captain felt the marbles in his torso and gave the look of "Oh, well.."

Such a talented artistic man...I remember seeing Mr. Roberts as a youngster and didn't really care for it as I was hoping to see naval warfare action but now that I am an old fart I really enjoy looking at the youtube snippets.

Dick Cavett was a class-act host. He would let his guests speak with few interruptions, unlike many talk show hosts today who need to interrupt ever 15 seconds. Cavett let his hosts share their experiences on their time, not his. We will never see the likes of his kind again.
