I've never read a book so fast! th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU Learning about his dogs and experiences was just the icing on the cake - bed this book through and through. We're working with our new pup and Brandon's advise was just what I needed. Wish he'd just come and train for me haha but it's good for us and happy to have this new set of tools to use on our pup.

As someone who had a couple of malamute mixes, you're doing the lord's work. Their general attitude towards training was always a hearty "what's in it for me?" and you could definitely see the wheels turning with our smarter one over whether the reward was worth what I was asking. Training our border collie mutt is night and day. She doesn't problem solve on her own as effectively as the malamutes did (she always looks to me for the answer) but her desire to please is a breath of fresh air!

I can't tell you how fantastic it is to see a dog training video where the dog isn't already trained! My pup likes to play a lot with my girl we already had she is 2 years older than her she reattached like ur enursa as his bigger they play and wrestle bt once she has had enough if he keeps going since she was fixed she latched onto his lip and ripped him open 😢 was so proud of him for not biting her back as could have been a lot worst as well as glad they listen to me and stopped when told so I could grab him and tell her to go outside so now have a crate that she puts herself in when she has had enough and he knows he is to leave her alone once she goes in as it’s her bed. Now for the first time in my life I have to use a muzzle incase when I’m at work because of your videos showing the basket muzzle and you yourself using them. Thank you for all your informative videos keep up the grate work learning a lot even though I have always been one to rescue dogs and help out training and braking bad habits regardless of breed.

Here in Germany, it is quite normal to deal with such dogs since they come as rescues from rumania and similar countries. I never wittnessed any of those kind of dogs to be rehabed with posiitive only. So, I am really cross my fingers for you that you find the way to train him with your approach.

    • @SaschKrassBass
      @SaschKrassBass 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@idarahmqvist1373 I think the issue is not with the problems chop shows or can show at the moment. He seems like a good dog. But his excitment can quickly escalate. I remember the turning off to the handler from my dog when I got her. Trainability needs to be trained, too and as George already diagnosed it Chop is intelligent but does not listen well.
It is like having a german shepard engine but with a terrier's handling.
George is hands on and very methological. He also has tons of experience. What looks easy for him is hard for normal people.
Chop is also a very present dog and stands up for himself. I think he has great potential to develop behavioral issues pretty quick. (Luckily, he is now with George)

I appreciate you showing the process when you’re struggling with a dog. I know for me it’s helped me with my mind set with my dog. When I want to just give up and let him do whatever he wants I know that Even professions struggle. It’s not easy and it’s time consuming but you can’t just expect it to happen. I think it’s more about training ourselves sometimes. I have an English Springer spaniel and if I give up on training I’ll end up never leaving the house or having anyone over bc you can leave him at home with no supervision since he’s basically bonded with me and his separation anxiety would cause him to destroy my house and no one wants to come over if you’re the guy that’s got a 50 pound dog that jump on everyone and will not settle down. It’s been a struggle but little by little he’s getting better

You showing the stay routine/opening the door slowly and rewarding the extended sit throughout it really shows you can train very difficult things (and in this case and with a lot of dogs, staying at an open door is HARD for them instinctually) through positivity and pain free consequences (closing the door when the dog tries to go through it, for example -- it reminds me of how my trainer taught up to teach leave it initially by having a treat or something desirable in an open palm and then close the hand over it if the dog tries to take the treat, keep the hand open when the dog doesn't go after it and after a few seconds you can give the dog the treat if you want. The 'punishment'/consequence here is just lack of access to the treat until they put their attention elsewhere for a second, then you crack open access). These methods can take longer to stick/take longer because you have to really break down behavior into smaller ones. Either way, this is so much better to do this than to YANK a dog back like I've seen other people do and scare a dog into not wanting to go through a door. This kind of training takes repetition, time, and creativity, but so worth it.

He is such a good Boi! He has drive to please, he is exceptionally clever, but outside - in the wide open, he is the streetdog that survived on the street. I also have a streetdog, my Border Collie Leela used to escape from her previous family and rather live on the street than with them. She is extremely intelligent - even for Border Collie standards, but outdoors one has to manage her. She is fairly sensitive to the sound of my voice. "Normal" voice is taken as a friendly suggestion, but urgent tone or - God beware - a whistle means urgency and she knows that is no discussion but only obedience. Street dogs are usually more than clever. There are no dumb street dogs, only dead street dogs.

But I know it's not his fault. We're now just shy of a month without an accident for our little 5.5 month old Pom puppy. Not counting that one time he deliberately peed on the curtains to mark them because that was definitely not an accident on his part... Teenagers, am I right? xD

How exciting! Congratulations. But a little word of warning. The dogs Zak are working with now are adults (not puppies). Maybe watch some of Zak's work with Inertia when she was a puppy. Your puppy will likely have a shorter attention span and may not respond to training like an adult (everything is so new to puppies, sometimes it's really difficult to hold their attention when they see/smell something new and interesting). Just don't fall into the trap of feeling like you're a "bad trainer" or that your puppy is done if he doesn't react like an adult. Keep the faith and happy training.

Dogs get themselves in some seriously precarious positions and we can't prevent every one of them. My own dog once tried to jump from a moving car window! He loves car rides but this particular day he saw another dog being walked and I didn't see the dog in time to roll the window back up. Thankfully I did see him get excited and try to jump for it and was able to stop him in time!

I can relate, I have a partly wolf dog (Saarloos Wolfshond mix). He has always lived with us, so he knows inside living. But we did not live in houses until lately. We lived in a van, a super tiny house, etc. And he was used to be outside, fenced in a large area. I walk him on a very long leash and I cant unleash him anywhere. He will jump out of fenced areas when I leave it, to follow me. And the fences have to be more than 2 meters to keep him in. Otherwise you can bet on it that he can jump over them. He is very attached to me. More so than any other dog I ever had. He does listen to me, but he gets distracted sooo easily. He has also chased a lot of animals in the wild. So rabbit, hares, a goose, deer. And he catches them. He is can get very aggressive towards other dogs. And when in a fight, he wont let go. It is scary sometimes. He is not as big as your dog is. That's fortunate. Because I would not have been able to get this far with him if he were bigger. I wish I knew he was a wolf mix when I got him. We would have had a better time getting where we are now.

OK, true story, across the street there is a girl who takes care for foster-dogs, but that particular dog, had a wish to escape. So at a day, the girl and her friend were away. They put extra locks on the front door. To prevent him to escape at night. While they were away, I was watching her house, and on the first floor he noticed a open window. So he jumped like this dog right below. So I called her, to tell her he was escaped. But he didn't do only that, he put the locks in place from the front door, so they were locked outside :)) so I gave them a little help, too much had been wrong that day to cope. He is now on a farm, where escaping is pretty tough. I laughed my eyes out. Crazy dog. Thank you for posting these vids, they give so much joy, although Zak has a hard time.

Great video!! I really love that you show your struggles too and don't cut them out. It really gives me a lot of motivation for training my own dog, when I get reminded that nobody is perfect and professional dog trainers struggle sometimes too. My dog is an adult but obviously there's always new tricks to learn or things you can improve in your training and that's what I'm trying to do. Today after watching this video, we trained on heel and it went really well!😍 My dog is also a bit like Inertia when it comes to other dogs, she doesn't play very rough but she loves to play chase with other dogs. When my dog wants to, I always try to let her play with some dogs (if I find a good dog that suits her personality and playstyle and the owners agree) because she really loves it and is so happy afterwards. Thank you so much for another great episode of reality dog training with Chop.❤️

The settle issue is real. My dog wouldn't settle at home for year and a half. We joked that he was allergic to lying down. He would constantly walk around or just stand and stare at us. In the end we had to hire a trainer so we could teach him to lie down (not in the sphing position, but with his hind legs sideways) and chill. Now he settles at home, but outside is still a strugle.

I had German Shepherd just like Chop, turned in to being the best dog 🐶 I have had, Bronte is going to be great when he gets older, can't wait! I know you are going to turn him around, you are in my prayers!

I am loving your videos and learning so much that I can take home to our new foster pup!
I have lived in Northern Canada for about 5 years now, so I know all about bears being everywhere. If I could offer you a tip, you don't need to test bear spray. There are only a few seconds of spray in there, and it is strongest right at the beginning. ☺️

This was inspiring. I've been wrapping my mind around generalization and sit because my puppy Dylan will sit pretty consistently at home, but outside the home is tending to be a different story. Your point about just re-teaching it a little makes great sense to me. Thank you!

I recently heard of something called an emergency word, that I think is supposed to get a more immediate response than a stay? Like if they are running into the road or something like that? I heard of it second hand but was curious about whether that is a useful thing to train or if the emphasis should just be on "stay"? Also I wasn't really sure how to even train the difference between an emergency situation and a typical one? Has anyone else heard of that training technique? Love all you do Zak!! I recommend your channel to absolutely everyone!

I have a panic toned WAIT!!!!! I use for situations like roads or deer encounters. It doesn’t mean stay in any set position and if he takes a step it’s not breaking an actual stay that can be meant for a longer duration. Wait can mean don’t go anywhere wait for your next instructions.
I also wear a dog whistle. Neither are used for fun…. They are used randomly a couple times during play to check and refresh…. A couple times a month. If I yell wait he literally freezes over his food bowl or within two bounds after a deer and instantly at the road.
And his currency that taught him I liked his response? I laughed at him!!! And told him he was amazing. Laughter seems to be a reward for him in some situations.
