As Steve mentioned, this was rehearsed with Genesis - bootlegs of the rehearsal tapes aren't difficult to find if you know where to look / who to contact. In fact, Wind and Wuthering almost ended up being a double album, with an extended version of this on side 3 and the Spot the Pigeon tracks on side 4. But Phil, famously, "couldn't get into it" so it was left off the album, pretty much the last straw for Steve. Contrary to popular opinion, there is no bad blood between Steve and Phil, Tony and Mike - he just needed to leave the band to expand his own musical creativity. Phil has said many times in interviews that, if he'd just stayed for one more album, he'd probably have remained in the band until the end, doing his solo stuff in tandem.
Have been playing this song "Please dont touch" for almost 6 years now in my car, along with the rest of the album, of course! Its a piece of ART... Thank you Steve.

Back at the end of the 70's when I was in college in Liverpool I got to see Steve on tour at the Empire Theatre. I can still remember now the start when the lights went down suddenly and the sound of 'Land of a Thousand Autumns' played, exploding into 'Please Don't Touch'. The place erupted - absolutely brillant. Some moments stay with you forever.
Please Don't Touch - another CD on heavy rotation in my car. Didn't know Steve liked Dave Brubeck Quartet. Me too! Prog rock, Jazz and driving (especially at night) makes long distance driving worth it. Cheers!
Hereby I confess that I used to use this track as the intro background music to my prog radio show a few years ago Mr. Hackett (guilty as charged). What memories and what a pleasure to see you listening to it as well, Thanks & Cheers!
The greatest thing for me of discovering the old Genesis years back was finding out of your tours. From them I got to hear your solo works (Spectral and Defector). Listening on Spotify then, I ran across Please Don't Touch. I love em all.
Lovely albums, "Voyage Of The Acolyte" and "Please Don't Touch", both I bought just when published. If they were rehearsed during Foxtrot and Wind and Wuthering sessions, probably that's the reason why I love them the most
I thought this track would have made a great opening for a horror movie, absolutely epic, cinematic and gothic. I saw you play this in the 80s in Manchester, and met you briefly after the show. Great track. Sort of pentatonic.
Mr. Hackett, please divulge the mystery of the intro to "carry up on the vicarage " At the beginning there is a nursery rhyme which sounds like coming from a gramophone (literally a music box) - words sounds like French ("viens Claudette fait risette" ??)- is it a song of yours or an old one ? ; Does it have a name ? - many thanks in advance
Not sure I knew that either, and I've always thought there wasn't any Genesis trivia that I didn't already know. Always assumed it was more of a case of the band considering whether to include Wot Gorilla or Please Don't Touch on W&W and the former won out.
You could say there was a 200lb Wot Gorilla in the room. Just like the psychology experiment I for sure won't listen to either of those tracks in the same way again ... Really loving the background and glimpse of the thought processes of the day.
It does indeed fit with Wot Gorrilla. And I agree that it's a better track. The whole album is beautiful; one of those one should listen to as a "whole".
I was lucky enough to see Steve on spectral mornings tour back in the day. His solo albumns were like Genesis albums to me then...but sounded more like Genesis. Go figure
i love you Mr. Hackett❤

Any keywords to try and find the demos? I’d love to hear them

"This reminds me of some of the stuff I used to do with Frank." That's a compliment supreme.

Hackett to Bits! : )
it is a great track, both of them!
Loved listening to this whilst trippin. Still gives me goosebumps today.
i just loooove those little stories...thanks for posting them Steve..
My favourite Steve album. No doubt about it.
Love this song. Just did a cover of it.❤

Very honest. Thanks Steve.

Excellent music !
But who was that family's drawing on the ilustration of the cover of that Disc?
Sorry to ask !
This was originally linked with Wot Gorilla? That's interesting. I may have to try them back to back to see how they sound together.

They’re different tempos but the drum pulse is similar- while Gorilla fades out, imagine this kicking in!

They were truly Genesis albums they other members didn`t want to play on their egoes, that`s what they are to me as well.
Genesis died when Hackett left
I just found this song, it really is great, but maybe not matching the atmosphere of W&W, it's a more aggressive piece.
