Oh Steve, you're killing me with the sweetest nostalgia with this song. My personal memory is 1979 and 1980, Birmingham Odeon. Indeed those mighty bass pedal tones shook the auditorium. What an exquisite experience. To feel those notes physically in the body as well as hear them. That and the strains of the mellotron (novatron). I remember thinking to myself in that moment. This is more Genesis than Genesis. I'm forever indebted to you for continuing to bring us the 'orchestral' beauty and awe-inspiring music of Genesis and your equally beautiful music after leaving Genesis.
To my mind the best track off Spectral Mornings and one of Mr Hackett's best overall. The sense of unease generated by the opening notes and rhythms is very striking.
Love thes segments You have to love social media that you can get up close and personal to artists you admire and get in depth insight into their music. When I was young you had to hunt musical newspapers like NME for any quotes or interviews with your heroes. It was rare, and really nothing on television. Even music shows Old Grey Whistle Test were not interview format. Rockstar seemed so far away and unreachable. Fantastic song, saw Steve I. 1979 on Spectral Mornings tour, amazing. Several other times in 80s. Clearly a super nice guy. What a treat.
Been a fan of Genesis since 2017. Funny, a couple of days ago I discovered the album Spectral Mornings. That album is blowing me away so hard. Thanks, Steve! from a young lad of 21 years! Hope after covid you can return to my hometown Guadalajara Mexico to see you live!
😯Blew me away seeing this live in Liverpool ('79?). My first live gig! Thanks for changing my musical outlook for the better. Loved the acoustic set also 👌. So serene and etheral 😑.
Those pedals shook the HELL out of *my* foundations, as well as those of the Roxy Theater in Hollywood California - November 1981. To this day, it was the greatest, most intense & powerful night of music I've ever witnessed. I was a Hackett newb that night: Been a fan for life ever since.
I brought my daughter and husband along to the gig in Folkestone last year. Looking around, the place was packed with balding men in glasses. All of a similar age to me and my husband! ‘Am I really that old?’ I thought. I was wondering what my son in law Chris would make of it as he was a lover of black metal in his teenage years. He absolutely loved the head banging quality of this track and told me it was the best gig he’d ever been to!
Cut it before beautiful new melodic section starts, no? Loved this song immediately - heard it live 81 or 82 in TO and Vancouver - always great to hear the great Steve Hackett’s perspective !
Lot's of Nice clean fun indeed Mr Hackett.Spectral mornings got to be one the best albums ever committed to wax.Just came in from work getting ready for a short holiday intermission.during that time i will give my copy another spin .Huge fan of your work and i will try to catch up with all of your postings.Have a great weekend!
Steve I saw you perform Clocks live in 79 with the touring band you talk of here and the whole show blew me away completely! Clocks on album is Earth shattering as it is but live it is the ultimate ball buster foundation shaker of lesser buildings I agree! One of your darkest yet most epic songs in your discography!
When those drums colossally tumble in I just go “Gnarly!” This is common So Cal slang for“awesome”. I saw this live at the ‘81 tour in L.A. Steve moved his head in time robotically to pauses in ticking of clock
The bass pedals dislodged all my dental fillings! Superb live tune - so lucky to have seen the original touring band play this. Memories......

arthurmee - I think I was probably at the same concerts 👍
YoungJim I think I was too!
I was there too
Thank you so much for the commentary on this song. It is a BIG favorite of mine. Such an awesome piece of artistry.
Spectral Mornings is a desert island album! Wonderfully uplifting.

One of the classic Hackett stalwarts. Thanks for the insights.
Love it! That song at the right volume, will change a heartbeat! Thank you for sharing the history of "Clocks" Steve!

i saw Steve play that one in the early 80's, at the Petit Colisée de Québec.
and a couple months ago live in Quebec City again.

I’ve seen him 3 times in the last 15 months or so. Very lucky!

That does tend to happen when attending the old guard concerts. You know you’re really in deep when the walker brigade shows up.
My 8 y.o absolutely adores Musical Box, Wolflight, Firth of Fifth, etc. Proud father here :)
This was my first exposure to Spectral Mornings ❤❤❤
I've always heard a hint of 'Carmina Burana' in the melody of 'Clocks.'
Stuart yeah was going to post that sentiment. Glad you beat me to it. The piece is " O Fortuna" I think. I'm surprised he didn't talk about that.
Interesting how well rock and classical blend together. I love it too. Endless possibilities. Endless creativity.
Often wonder what staff at venues think when this is smashed! Great stuff again thanks.
Will always remember John Shearer with his stainless steel kit at the Glasgow Apollo in the late 70's
Great song! Spirit of genesis
😍 adoro questo brano, è uno dei miei preferiti, avevo 16 anni quando comprai il vinile. Bravo Steve! 3 likes for you from Italy
What a fantastic track
Incredible music that's timeless.
What A Great Track, Thanks Steve!!!!!
Remember hearing it live 1980, awesome, and again this year--still awesome! Fascinating piece, fascinating album.
from a very happy time in my life, just love this track and of course the album
Had a copy of Spectral Mornings signed by the band after the show at the Manchester Apollo back in the day.
Such a brilliant song from an awesome album . I first heard playing whilst on holiday as a teen ager superb love to you and Jo stay safe and well 🙏❤️
I always enjoyed the boots you worn in the video Steve !
One of your very best Steve
Good memories of 1979 in Toronto at the Okeefe center

and with this, my top 3 is complete!! thank you steve!
This one is full of mystery. Love the Mellotron and the bass pedal. This song has a few musical 'flavors' from the "Please Don't Touch" album.
I remember seeing this being played live circa at the Hammersmith Odeon early 80's. Outstanding.

Wonderful album Spectral morning❤️
Managed to get one of John Shearer's drumsticks back in the day City Hall Sheffield 👍 fantastic gig 😊
Goegeous piece ! Love it a lot !!!!
Awesomeness
Best played loud and live.
i love this during REVISITED TOURS it's great the second you hear the first few clicking sounds you know the song another tremendous composition
Just superb
A masterpiece
Heard that track live at Mogador venue, Prais way back December 1980. Sheer classic !
Great!
Absolute masterpiece 🙏🏻
When those drums colossally tumble in I just go “Gnarly!” This is common So Cal slang for“awesome”. I saw this live at the ‘81 tour in L.A. Steve moved his head in time robotically to pauses in ticking of clock
Canterbury Odeon 1980, got a photo of Shearer's kit...
😂😂 shakes the foundations of some venues 🤣
You rule!
A bit of doom is good, Steve. To paraphrase George Bernard Shaw, ' a lifetime of happiness...would be hell on earth'. Who are we to argue... :)
*looks at the nearest clock ‘Great Scott’!
Sounds very European - almost Beethovenish.
Carmina Burana
I'd have liked this to have been with Genesis and maybe lyrics added with vocals by Phil Collins.
