    Hey guys, so the ASSHOLES over at Steam literally made the original Metro 2033 free like 2 days after I published this video. I’m salty as hell but I thought everybody should know.

    • @Stevin20687
      @Stevin20687 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Speaking of the original 2033. I can only speak for the 360 version (and I am going to be skeptical about the re-release on steam, they may have changed things) but, on my first playthrough I decided that "if a hostile is human, genocide is the best option" and still got the option for the good ending. Then replayed that section to see the canon ending.
      I believe the karma system in 2033 just looks for certain actions to net you the good ending (playing a guitar, giving money to beggars, not take the money for saving a child, listening to conversations at different safe zones). I think the developers knew how BS their enemy AI and damage out-put was for this game and didn't put in code for negative karma for killing humans (that or they ran out of time and money).

      @@Stevin20687 I remember seeing somewhere that the original 2033 requires you to commit to one ending or another at the end by either shooting the missile guidance or the Dark One

    • @Stevin20687

      @@saltyshrimppasta Nope. If you have enough good karma you can either shoot (or walk up and push) the targeting device, getting the good ending, or stand back and watch to get the bad (canon) ending.

    Metro Exodus was the only game i player to this that me cry for 2 hours straight. I was a huge fan of the series, when I got the good ending on my first playthrough, I got so emotional from when I saw Millers body on the car, right before Artyom took the wheel, I cried from there to the credits and just kept thinking about Artyom's journey and everyone involved, and it felt just so beautiful

      Yeah I saw somebody else say that as well. The thing that threw me off is how the commander made the comment that they can get back to their wives, and he referred to Artyom’s as “Anenka,” and “enka” is usually a pet name in Russian that basically means “beloved.” Since I knew Anna and Artyom get together in the games beforehand, I automatically assumed that it was the same character. I don’t remember if Artyom’s last name is ever actually said in the book now that I think of it

    So the reason you see the dark one vision outside VDNKh is because you pass through a ghost of a dark one you can see right in front of you moments before the vision happens.
    Also I can see why they didn't include a mechanic for staring at the Kremlin stars. For one most people would have missed that dialogue in Market and have no clue what is happening without some added dialogue from Miller. For two a lot of players probably wouldn't even realize the kremlin stars are in the background of that level.
    The dark ones are inside D6 because they were actually a sentient bioweapon developed from humans before the nukes fell

    ive played the original 2033 and Redux is pretty different. There is actually more enemy variety in the original with 5 different versions regular, black, female, armored and an albino that kills boris, there are also 2 varients of librarians, hairy and non hairy lol. There is a suit system that to my knowledge only shows up twice in which you can choose between a stealth or combat suit (like the stalker dlc). There is an option to equip knives and grenades as your primary and your regular melee is a gun bash. I think the biggest story difference is the custcenes being a mix of 1st and 3rd person in the og and d6 itself- the og version has it filled with armored nosalis that pop in and out of the ceiling and chase you through the cave.

    My main issue with Metro 2034 and 35 was that they were a completely different reading experience. I went into these books expecting more of Metro 2033 but was left ultimately disappointed. Even though i read the books after playing 33 and Last light, i still remember a lot of moments from the first book and especially how tragic the ending felt, with Artyom coming to the understanding of the dark ones when it was already too late, which is something the game doesn't really convey. However, i forgot pretty much everything from the sequels (except maybe some characters and the main plot twist from 2035) and i only started remembering stuff with the story recap from this video, which made me feel like and amnesiac regaining his memory. I will have to reread them again sometimes in the future and perhaps i will have a better time because my expectations for these books will be different.

    2:25:15 Man, these enemies suck more than just being annoying enemies to fight. I hated these enemies because they felt lazy in their design. Metro is filled with such creative and interesting mutant monsters: the Watchmen, Shrimp, Nossilisks, Demons, and Librarians are great both from a world building perspective and an artistic perspective... and the best the Exodus team could come up with was... ghouls from Fallout.
    And these enemies get used so much. I'd have rathered dealt with Watchmen or Nossilisks. At least I'm familiar and appreciate their designs.

    With the Dark Ones in 2033. Artyom is the only connection they have with humanity, they have no knowledge other than what he gives them as a medium. And he is an isolated kid who has never left his station, has a itch for genocide, is repressing his own emotions, and kinda hates where he is and does not want to be there. I think that could be interpreted by the Dark Ones in a lot of ways... and none of them would be good. Even with Artyom they can only communicate cryptically and in a way that isn't very good for him.
    They are intelligent yes, but in a way completely different than people and with no experience with them other than Artyom. I think assuming they are evil because of their effect is the same as what Khan says, assuming fire is hostile.
    For the Volga. Killing the people in the first area is not enough to trigger the death of Duke. I have on more than one run done that. You have room for error, quite a bit of it. And the point of Duke dying in the first place was due to Artyom being too quick to try and be Rambo. He looks up to Artyom, and if he sees you look at a situation quickly, and act quickly he will follow, and will get shot. Along with the cultists just thinking you are legitimately the devil. That is why you have to explore, listen, and watch for subtitles to figure it out the first time, because you are teaching Duke to do the same thing. Same with the boat of traders, and the bridge.
    Also I don't think the photo given to Giul, as well as all the other sidequests like that have an effect. Nowhere down the line in any of those sidequests does the moral flash appear either bad or good, and in addition to that they both serve another purpose, they unlock scenes later on separate from moral decisions. The saving of the slaves is a big part, but you don't have to get every one, and you can even accidentally shoot a few of the slaves and get away with it if you do enough.
    In general about the moral system. You can make the argument that those people would just turn around and kill more, so you would want to eliminate them... but Artyom absolutely cannot do that. If that were true, then he should have never been given mercy by the Dark Ones, or forgiveness by the little one or really anyone at all. He killed more and caused more suffering than anyone else you meet in the Metro outside of maybe the invisible watchers. Artyom is not free of sin, and certainly is not the person who should be throwing stones around.
    Even then though, you don't lose points in Last Light or 2033 for killing hostiles, only people who are unarmed, or unable to fight. Even in Exodus there are only 6 areas of the game where killing hostiles effects anything, and you can still mess up at least 2 of those and get away with it.
    Oh yeah, and also the Artyom in 2034 is Artyom Popov, not the one we know.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah my experience with the morality system was weird. It’s likely that Duke died because I capped that guy who asked me to kill him. The morality system was a little hard to gauge since it doesn’t have a physical meter to represent.
      The same can be said about saving Damir, since on my first playthrough I did everything the same except saving the slaves at the first salvage yard, saving the hermit being harassed by slavers, and saving the two people on the oil rig. I’ve seen a lot of people online claim that they’ve never been able to successfully save him.
      Damn game designers not giving me a morality meter and shit.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I definitely know the video isn’t perfect, but I will at least say that I tried to research the morality system to see how it plays out, and much of what I found was pretty mixed. I think a lot of the confusion comes from the fact that it’s not a system that can be directly measured, but I agree with you that more testing was required. Even so, I can’t hold it against myself too much since I would have to replay the entire chapter to see how every effect would play out in order to be sure.
      Also, I think that the morality system should be based on more than what Artyom would/wouldn’t do based on the canon events of Last Light. I know for a fact that he would kill people who cause others harm without hesitation in Metro 2035 since he more or less monologues about how he isn’t as idealistic as he used to be. This is also a larger issue with morality systems so it’s not exclusive to Metro: how do you measure morality in a “good” versus “bad” light without simplifying morality as a whole? I feel this way mostly regarding the Caspian since it’s what stuck out to me the most. I think there’s some decent discussion to be had there.

    Regarding the name thing. I am impressed how does your Russian friend not know this because even though Russian isn't my first language I know this and it's common knowledge even if you study Russian as a foreigner.
    Russians have kind of a short name or nicknames for almost every male and female name which they use informally in everyday speech. For example, you would call a Nathan - Nate if he was your friend. Zhenya comes from Yevgeniy which would be Russian variant of ancient Greek name which in English stands for Eugene.
    Still, a very stupid thing by developers to translate names to English.
    Btw, great video and your content is on the same level as some more famous TH-camrs discussing video games. Hope you get more attention, you deserve it.

      It’s probably my fault for the way I asked the question. I quite literally said “hey how does Zhenya translate to Eugene?” So I think he was likely looking for a direct translation and probably missed the short name portion (at least that’s what I assume). I’m glad you enjoyed the video though! I’m sure I can grow the channel if I actually get the time to sit down and finish the vids I’m working on

    So, I made it to the part where you discuss the morality system in the games at about 2 hours and 19 minutes in. By the point you've reached the Church of Tsar Fish in Exodus, you have played the two previous games and have learned that if you want the good ending, you gotta put 'em to sleep by bonking them over the heads, no matter how bad or hostile they are, because that's how you've gotten the good ending in the previous two games. In the first two games I have always gotten the bad ending first, but in Exodus I got the good ending on my first playthrough. Imagine knocking out a bunch of reds and nazis, who are hellbent on killing you and ruining the whole metro completely, and then surviving the Battle for D6 only to murder a handful of religious peasants in a church, because they lied to you about being peaceful). By this point in the franchise, your knife button should probably be unbound.

    WDYM EXODUS GAMEPLAY BAD?!?!
    Nah for real tho, I agree and a bit disagree with you.
    The Karma system is a bit nonsense, but I somewhat agree with the system. 4A trying to make artyom the good guy, like literally a good guy.
    Yes the most monsters are humanimal is a bit weird, I hate that they have a lot of monsters in the previous instalment but now they somewhat vanish. (Maybe because different places or some stuff like that)
    When you say the game makes you try it harder, I prefer it like that. Yea shotgun can one shot me at 100 meters is somewhat making my blood boil. But I like it because it gave me a challenge. ( Every person has a choice)
    Artyom being a silent protagonist is 4A developer choice that still confused me as hell. Making artyom Talk will make the story 10 Times better. Like fck they literally make me love Anna in this game.
    Still this vid is very well made, I want to ask how long you are making this vid but I know it's a lot of time.
    (Edit) Agh the soundtrack I forgot, they are so good. And when seeing miller died in the cutscene make me cry like a baby

      I’m glad you enjoyed it! I don’t remember everything I said in this one, but I can agree with your points as well. I haven’t played the game in over a year so most of these issues are things I’ve forgotten for the most part. I just remember how good the gunplay and final sections are when I think back to it.

      @@saltyshrimppasta I still believe exodus is one of the best game to see, the graphics is insane and not need a super hardware to run.
      But, DLC is kinda a mix bag. The two colonels (imho) are good DLC.
      Sam's story is a bit of a letdown, but if you like a hero shooter it is a very good experience.

    I only just started the video but I wanted to get this out of the way. I like the original stealth mechanic from the first game. I know lots of people don't like it but I think that they are wrong. If people can tell me to "get good" when it comes to Souls games then I can say get good at the stealth in the original metro 2033.

    • @dustinfritzfarr9529
      @dustinfritzfarr9529 ปีที่แล้ว

      I only just got to the part where you asked to tell the differences in the stealth mechanics so I'll do my best.
      The watch is the first major change. In the original there are light indicators that tell you how much light aka how easily you are going to be seen. The watch has 3 light levels at the start of the game, green or probably won't be seen, yellow or roughly 50-50, and red probably going to be seen. About half way through the game, in the shop level before the battle between the reds and the reich, you can buy a stealth suit that will reduce you chances of being seen even further unlocking the final indicator of the watch. Off. Yeah off. No chance in hell you're getting seen. This granular approach to stealth was a wonderful aspect to the game once you wrapped your head about it and played with it to learn what you can get away with.
      The other major change in the redux that I hate is that enemies in the original never go back to their patrols after being alerted. The moment stealth is broken that's it. You're done. The enemies might not know where you are but they will be behind cover and constantly looking over their shoulder after stealth is broken.
      The game was never intended to be a ghost in the night simulator. Stealth was always the practical tool it was meant to be. Lower the number of enemies so fighting was more even and not a drain on resources. Humans will relax and let down their guard. Save your bullets when you can and use them on the mutants that are less forgiving.

      I'm at the part about the library and even on hard-core difficulty the helsing arrow gun is the best tool for killing librarians in game. It's faster than throwing grenades and silent so other librarians won't come running. Just make sure to overcharge your pressure gauge before engaging and you'll be fine.

      I always find it amazing how expertly they made Ana an S tier waifu after I literally screamed at the screen when artyom had "relations" with her during the second game. I found her annoying, grating, and I wanted to save her only because I'm not an asshole. During the third game I expected to hate her too... but by the time Ana was poisoned in that hole in the ground I was saying "no Ana don't leave me!"

      If you mean entire franchises at once, then yes I’m sure I will. It’s much easier to do with linear games like Metro than it is RPG’s like Fallout or the Witcher series, but I think it would work well for something like Bioshock, Halo, post-reboot Wolfenstein or Doom, stuff like that. It probably won’t be for a few months because I have at least the next 2-3 projects laid out right now, not including the one I’m editing right now (as we speak in fact)

    You cant pass the morality system if you known how to get the good ending? That is more easy than I trough, simply shoot the terminal that launch the missiles, destroying it, even with the morality system, the game doesn't tell you that.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta  ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe that in the original version release you were able to commit to one of the endings by shooting either the terminal or the Dark One. For the Redux, getting the bad ending always kills the Dark One in the tunnel sequence, and the good ending wounds it, giving you the choice to commit to finish it off or shoot the terminal.

    One thing I absolutely hate about 2033 and last light (didn't play exodus yet) is the morality system. This system is pathetic. You can give ammo to beggars, save hostages, help citizens, spare or save your enemies who are defensless, kill others only when they start attacking you but hey you didn't listen to some random dudes talkin or didin't go to some hidden room with ammo f you ya got the bad ending. Another thing in last light is the strip club that gives you negative points. So... Firstly the game tells you to explore the world as much as you can, interact with everything but then it punishes you for visiting the club and smoking. What the hell is this? This is the worst morality system I've seen in any videogame in my entire life...

    • @dylanv.4970
      @dylanv.4970 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Morality isn't the right word for the system because it's not just about morality, it's more of an "open mind" system. It determines whether you as Artyom pay attention to the world around you, taking everything in and not judging things at first glance. Hence the finding ammo stashes and listening to random people. And you don't get a negative point just for entering the strip club, you get one if you accept a dance from the stripper. Which makes sense. You're trying to hunt down Pavel but you're gonna put that aside to have a lap dance that gets you nowhere.

    • @STPstudio47
      @STPstudio47 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dylanv.4970Well it's been a while and I wrote that comment enraged after I got the bad ending in last light😆
      But I'd still say the system of points is really unbalanced. Like I said, saving others or not taking revenge should have huge impact and give you like 5 moral points, while stuff like hidden room or lap dance should take away 1-2 points.
      Especially in last light because there the ending depends on how the little dark one sees you, so the main focus that determines the ending should be on the choices made when you're with the dark one, because he witnesses your actions. The system was done a lot better in Exodus.
