    Regardless of your low sub or view counts, I absolutely love your long analysis videos, you have your very personable, yet objective and fair look at games as well as a good amount of jokes and memes spring around as icing on the cake. (Absolutely laugh my ass off with your jokes in the Prototype video, please do more of that in future videos lol)
    Keep up what you're doing and also keep in mind there are always people out there looking forward to your content.

    21:40 Something no Dead Space video that I've seen has ever mentioned, the syncing between the characters physically on the other side of the track and the video feed being piped directly to Issac. I played this scene, and rewatched videos of this scene, and am still impressed by how well those two are synced so that it actually looks like the video is live.
    1:17:54 On the flip side, the ship you are on is MUCH older than the Ishimura. The lore being that these ships were from an expedition about two hundred years prior. Something that is shown at the start of the game when you take on the role of that soldier in the snow. So the fact that there are cumbersome ladders, the doors opening slowly and the speed of the airlocks compared to the first two games can be forgiven that the ship and later ground station are about two centuries old and well out of date. The rest of your criticism though is valid though. It does take way too much time for the work bench animations, and the elevator thing.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You know, I never actually paid much attention to that, but you’re absolutely right. I imagine that it could be done by placing using a second camera in the engine that captures their models, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. This is usually why I usually need developer interviews to point these things out to me so that I can appreciate them properly.

    • @TrexelCat
      @TrexelCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saltyshrimppasta For that to be a thing, and I'm not saying that it isn't, that means every other video call was accomplished the same way with actual models hidden somewhere outside the level. Given that it would just be extra work to have two different methods of having those video calls. Literally coding it into one scene and wasting engine code just to have all the rest be animated gifs with sound. And in Dead Space 2 they do it again when Ellie and Nolan are talking to Isaac from an upper level via video feed. I don't recall any such scene in Dead Space 3 though. So all of those could just be the afore mentioned animated gifs with sound.
      Might explain why some of the communications between characters are just a sound bar though, no video. They may not have wanted to add in and animate yet another model just for some vocal time with Isaac. Or build another small set to appear behind the character.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessarily. I’m not sure if you’ve ever played around with a game engine (I have minimal experience myself), but I believe you can place cameras the same way you place a light source, so I’m thinking that they would just place them next to the models that we see on screen (since they’re all doing this in-engine), and then patch that to the video. But this is just me speculating I honestly have no clue how they pulled it off.

    • @TrexelCat
      @TrexelCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@saltyshrimppasta Oh no, I get that part. I'm meaning for all the other video calls through the series doing the same thing, just having a scene built outside the map you are currently on with the character that is calling. As it would be impractical to have two methods of doing the video calls just for one scene where the person calling is actually viewable by the player for that one call.
      I've never played around with game engines, but I do do a lot of 3D render art where I do many of the same tricks to accomplish some of my more complicated images. And in 2008, it was a bit harder to pull off tricks like this, and was a waste of programming to add something like that into a game for simply a single scene. So I am postulating that all of the video calls through the game are handled this way as it would be just as easy to build a small set outside the map where the player can't see it. Then set a camera and animate the call. Which would also explain why some of the calls are audio only. It is expensive on memory to have all these scenes, and takes a long time to do the animations. So to save on some of the memory(the PS3 only had 256 MB RAM) and to save some time in animating, they might have just not made the scenes for the audio only calls.

    This comment ended up way longer than I thought it was gonna be, so please bear with me lol
    Regarding your confusion at 45:08, while the obvious answer is that Visceral most likely hadn't given much thought about the Marker lore at the time of the first game, I think we can come to a reasonable explanation based on the information that came after. The phrase "Make Us Whole" is revealed in the sequels and novels to basically mean fulfilling the Marker's desires and pushing it towards achieving Convergence, so we must assume that placing it on the pedestal somehow helps it achieve that.
    The reason why, when you place it there, the Necromorphs die around you is made clear in one of the backstory text logs that you get after completing the game. It's told from the perspective of one of the doctors involved in the initial experiments with the Marker on Aegis VII who mentions that his team discovered that while the Marker creates Necromorphs, it also creates a small "dead space" field around itself that forces any Necromorphs inside it into dormancy. After the outbreak, the doctors start building the pedestal in an attempt to "broaden the Marker's signal", which would in turn broaden the dormancy-inducing field around it and allow them to reach the landing pad and escape the planet. It's mentioned that the idea for this pedestal was presented to one of the scientists in the form of a vision from the Marker. Obviously, we know the Marker induces visions to further its own goals, so it's safe to assume that by broadening and strenghthening its signal, the pedestal may be what the Marker needed to initiate Convergence, and it tricked the scientists into building it.
    The reason that this "dead space" field even exists is unclear, and it can be easy to forget since it's never mentioned again in the sequels, but it does feature prominently in the novel Dead Space: Catalyst which came out around the time of the third game. The Marker in that book imprints its blueprints in the brain of one of the characters, much like what happens to Isaac, and it tells him to stay inside the field so that it can keep him safe. It later becomes clear that the Marker only wants to protect him so that it can use him as a means of reproduction when he gets off the planet and, just like Isaac, goes on to build more Markers.
    In addition to all of this, we know that in order for a Brother Moon to be built, the Marker not only uses Necromorphs and dead bodies, but also chunks of the planet it is on. The Marker in the first game can't do much sitting on the Ishimura's cargo hold, thus it must be returned to Aegis VII if it ever hopes to start Convergence.
    So yeah, that's my take on it. It was a combination of wanting to return to the planet so that it can be "made whole" through its pedestal and initiate Convergence, as well as wanting Isaac to live and escape so that he can build more Markers.

    • @saltyshrimppasta
      @saltyshrimppasta  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That actually makes a lot of sense, especially considering that the marker in the first game is far smaller than those in the sequels, so I can see how amplifying the signal to achieve a greater convergence would be preferable to it. Even if it’s a retcon, it does add some needed context.

    • @rubencastro811

      @@saltyshrimppasta It's definitely something I hope the remake addresses, especially since the developers have talked about wanting to include references to the lore that came after and making the first game fit better with it.

    Good video overall, but you got a couple of details wrong:
    35:35 He didn't stab him in the eye with a needle, he stabbed him in the forehead with a railroad spike. I believe it's supposed to reference the way the infector types stab their prey in the head in order to convert them into necromorphs. Mercer may have been trying to make things easier for them.
    41:40 You might not have realized it, but Mercer actually turned into a necromorph, and you killed him shortly afterwards.
    Here are some personal thoughts:
    51:45 It would probably be a good idea to play the game more than once and on multiple difficulty settings if your intention is to thoroughly critique it in terms of gameplay. At least in the third game, if not in the others, resources may be more or less scarce in different modes. Also if you beat 3 on Classic Mode then you unlock the Devil's Horns and can blast necromorphs away by shouting "Bang! Bang!", objectively improving the quality of your gaming experience :)
    1:27:20 If Sam did survive and stood before the general alongside Tim, then I'm sure the general would have just found a sneakier way to kill both of them rather than just shooting one of them and ignoring the other.
    In my experience the dodge roll was useful in certain situations with or without i-frames, though obviously not against things like the spider boss.

    • @saltyshrimppasta

    8:02 As someone who loves Dead Space to death, I cannot express how happy the remake makes me. It couldnhave been a dosaster and it turned out being... Kinda better than the first game it's a remake of.
    And this news that the art director of the 2nd game was on board makes me so happy as well. I didn't know that, but that explains a LOT why the Remake looks so freaking good and true to the art style of Dead Space, which art style means a lot to me.
    It's why I'm actually not a huge fan of Titanfall 2 (among other reasons), because its art style became more generic vs the HEAVY gritty, industrial military style the first Titanfall went for.

    Now this was a series I enjoyed a lot. Also liked the remake, and REALLY hoping that this becomes a trend for this series, as it's one that deserves another shot. A lot of the problem with it wasn't just the budget of the games, as noted by some insiders, 1 and 2 ALSO included in their budgets the cost of two animated films(One is okay, one is garbage), a few limited issue comic series, and some novels.
    So, basically, EA was trying to make the Mass Effect lightning, which saw its first three novels hit the best seller lists, AND actually hit, briefly, the top ten comics of the month on release for their tie ins. Ignoring, of course, that Mass Effect was a HUGE universe with a lot of moving parts, so we wanted to engage with stuff the games had hinted at. Meanwhile, of the projects for Dead Space, only the Altman book(which answers some of your questions, it's called Martyr).
    Interestingly enough, the answer is...Unitology is a lie. All of it. Every word of their holy book was made up. Altman died to a proto brute trying to warn people about the markers, and EarthGov was formed using the marker derived tech(Stasis, Shock Drive, even the gravity control stuff), and started the Church as a means of control of the population. EarthGov and Uni are actually the same at the upper leadership level.
    Of course, that's what bites them in the bottom in game 3. Not EVERYONE was aware of that, and those just under the leadership in the church, unaware of the connection, but high enough to have access to classified intel like the Marker lab locations, decided to go rogue and turn the markers on to start convergence, since THEY believe it will be a good thing, and think the upper echelons just got cold feet, rather than being aware of the lie.
    That's another thing I was expecting you to bring up that you never did. If the markers on Earth have started convergence, WHY do they need to be told where it is, shouldn't they know? The Moons I mean. Of course, the reason is simple, EarthGov, back at the start, made flawed Markers, ones that aren't quite what they should be, as they experimented with them, creating things like the Red Marker(The original was Black, if you're curious).
    So these ones don't work quite right, and they want to go help jumpstart the events on Earth, but they don't know precisely where that is, which is why they want Isaac to show them. That's also why the Red Marker wanted to stop this, it was made wrong, and knew what it was doing WASN'T what it was supposed to do, so it wanted to stop everything, rather than risk a bad moon being made.
    I do also like this answer to the Fermi Paradox(If there are aliens, then where are they?). The alien moons 'seed' worlds with Markers, knowing that life eventually grows beyond its means, and the Markers, thanks to the Moons, are an infinite source of energy. Of course, what people don't realize until its too late is they aren't GENERATING the energy, they're RECIEVING it. The thing making it is the Brethren Moons, and they will take their pound of flesh for that power.
    It's a nice, and very enticing, honey trap for any civilization that finds one. You see it, and it not only hits you with a signal that tells you to make more, showing you how, but it also has the element that even those unaffected are going to want more of these things, to help power their civilization, spreading them far and wide, until it's time for 'Convergence'.
    Overall, a good video, and a great series. I actually kind of hope they continue with a remake of 2 instead of leaping to 4, especially with some small changes that could ripple out from the starting point in the remake.

      Also one of my favorite things about the concept of them is the fact that they are responsible for human life as we know it, but are also as far as we know right now unless DS3 gets its ending expanded upon responsible for the end of human life as we know it. It's a really interesting cyclical nature being established, and also links necromorphs to be the answer to the Fermi Paradox: humans haven't discovered other sentient life because we are the sole survivors in a war we weren't even aware exists.
      Idk something about the markers being the reason why humans evolved is just so cool to me. This series' lore connects with me on a level that nothing else has come close to before.

    1 hr into the video. I completely agree with your criticisms of DS1. As someone who found DS1 scary, it loses its horror and slowly becomes more action oriented as the game progresses. The combat, not terrible, could be refined and gave it a pass as it was the first one. Mr. Incredible, scary the first time, became annoying but was satisfying to burn him alive and the missions are kinda fetch questy at times with the constant back tracking. I do have a tendency to shelve discussion until later in the video (such as not talking about the Norton vs. Isaac conflict until the climax), so I can see how that would be confusing if you had no prior knowledge of the events. The main reason I do that is to keep repetition to a minimum, but to also give you guys a chance to experience the plot points as you would playing the game, so certain twists can still have an impact. For example, had I mentioned up front, “Norton is a bad dude because he tries to kill you later on,” that would have weakened that climax quite a bit. However, I can see how saying “I’d rather see this plot point to its conclusion before I offer alternatives” makes no sense without knowing what I’d be changing.
      Again, I really appreciate the feedback. There’s always areas I can improve, especially in video structure, and I’ll try to avoid leaning too heavily on information that you guys don’t have yet. Hopefully this didn’t bring the experience down for you too much!

    Okay Dead Space video here we go! I love the first Dead Space almost as much as I love the first Metro game. I'm not much of a fan of the remake because I'm a boomer who doesn't like change, and they made Nicole look 60.

      I love beating the first two games with only the plasma cutter. It just feels so good to do. Also I got to say aiming with a controller always feels just a bit off in games but in Dead Space those laser pointers leading right up to where you will hit does something to my brain that makes it easier. The dot in the middle of the screen should do the same but they just don't it's weird.

      I'm sorry... I shouldn't be talking because I've had major brain dead moments in video games too... but holy shit this was a real five-head moment. 33:48

    You're not the only one who didn't find the Dead Space games scary. I enjoy them but their in-your-face, howling like a nutter, violin string scream brand of horror felt so antithetical to fear.

    Man was I disappointed by The Calisto Protocol, I mean like holy shit was it the years most disappointing game for me even ahead of Gotham Knights which I actually had more fun with.

    Tried playing Dead Space 1 maybe 5 or so years ago and thought it was awful. Bad writing, bad horror, bad gameplay, and bad atmosphere. Nonetheless this was an enjoyable video despite the fact you kept saying "this doesn't phase me but I think would be good if it did phase me" when it's just bad horror.

    It's a shame you made this video before the remake, because your comments about Isaac's Silent Protag state in the first game no longer really being applicable with the remake giving him a proper voice and characterization (Such as having Isaac willingly volunteer himself for jobs that in the original he was merely instructed to do)

    Alright, Finished the video. I really enjoyed the 2 hr watch. Never played DS3 but from what I can understand DS3 is a mixed bag. The plot just happens for the sake of happening and the characters have downgraded from the previous 2 games. The combat while an improvement, it costs the atmospheric horror the previous had. The puzzles are also a mixed bag, some being really good and inventive, while the others are rely on the 2 player gimmick or don't work properly. Speaking of 2 player, it seems that 2 player is a must if you want to get the full story experience, filling up the plot holes in single player. But what it lacks in what the previous 2 had it makes up for it in the expansion of the universe's lore and world building. The Brethren Moon are a really cool concept that not allot of media has delved into, even amongst its video game peers. Awesome video.

      I definitely try my hardest to bring some unique perspective to my videos so it doesn’t turn into “just another video essay,” especially since the style is becoming more and more saturated. It really means a lot that you enjoy them enough to stick around for a while, and it really helps motivate me to work even harder on the next one.
