- Today we're taking a look at the new Okuma Hakai baitcaster. I'll take you through an up-close look at the features, explain my pros and cons, and give my final thoughts. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the Hakai for testing over the last month. There are some very nice features on this reel for being a sub $200 baitcaster. i have 1, 8.1 ratio .. it is amazing reel .. handle baramundi easily .. i really love this reel .. i give it 10/10 .. when you cast, it is really silent . maybe because of the ball bearing at the shaft .

That reel is nice and light and small so your hand can fit around it if you hild your line when hopping. Okuma makes great stuff. Thanks Debo

This is by far in the the top 2 best reels of the year. Okuma is killing it, the only thing I don’t like is how the grips looks. I bet they feel great but they could have a more slick design. It’s far more versatile than most offerings in that price range. Also you will be able to find this at a discount throughout the year making it more of an incredible offer. I’d give it a 8.5 or a 9 out of 10.
There are so many incredible reels out there now that you really have to find one that just feels right in your hand.
at 170 bucks it's got some real competition- I'm not sure would drop that much on a brand name I'm not really that familiar with. I'm sure it's a great reel but I think most ppl are like myself in that if we're gonna spend over say 120 bucks we want a brand name we know has been tried, tested, and approved by the vast majority of anglers.
That said- I recently rolled the dice and bought a 13 fishing rod so- if something impresses me enough I'll forego the fact that I don't know the name that well. I happened to have picked this rod up and was just really impressed with the action, weight, feel in hand, etc. Plus I know someone who is sponsored by 13 and I trust them a great deal, they're very impressed with the company and the guys who run it. It's turned out to be a great froggin' rod for me- wish it was a bit shorter but otherwise I love it. Maybe if I held his reel in hand I would change my mind but- 170 seems a bit steep imo.
@@stoneysdead689 We have to take the chance on another company because that’s how they grow, I want competition. I have like 10 Shimano reels and now I’m just bored. I’m am specifically going out of my way this year to pick up 4 reels that I normally wouldn’t buy just to see what’s out there. If they don’t work out I’ll just warranty them for a new one and then sell them off. Who knows something like this could be an absolute hidden gem.
@@stoneysdead689 i have a few 13fishing rod and reel combo's $90 spinning and a $100 baitcast combo, both do extremely well in fact i caught my p.b large mouth in my thumbnail pic with a 13fishing spinning rod. Great freaking stuff i really do like the all black theme too. I will say one thing @Stoney's Dead okuma rods and reels i have been using for over 15+ years they make quality stuff i always said okuma is like a poor man's shimano aka meaning its quality for a fraction of the price and i stand by them. Their Customer Service is top notch anytime something happens to your reels or rods they are always more than willing to replace it for you.
I know this comment is old but at my local tackle shop I picked up this reel for about $120 after tax so got it for a steal!
I have several Okuma set ups. Never have a problem with any of them.

As many have asked for, yes, I am looking forward to the SLX DC review. I bought one last year and have loved it, save for one issue. I had someone else at the store load my reel with braid and they didn't use a backer so I often had the line slip on the spool. I have since corrected this and have been back in love. The only issue I have had wasn't actually the fault of the reel so as it stands I would rate the overall experience very high. Life has kinda turned south the last couple months and I have not been able to get out (I'm still hoping to before we get our first skim ice here in MI) so thank you for keeping the videos coming. You are a breath of fresh air with your videos that is always appreciated.

@@chrismash1792 Some use a few yards of monofilament to start spooling their reel and tie to braid and fill the spool. Slips less than braid and also cheaper than filling the whole spool with braid. How much cheaper depending on how much "backing"you decide to use. Also putting a small piece of electrical tape on spool or taping line to spool when starting to the spool reel to stop slippage works. Or both.

The 101 models are the left hand retrieve models must be a glitch on their system showing all right hand
@@snsdmarquez1 I was thinking the 101s were left hand too when I went to look. I'm gonna wait for the actual stock though to make sure. I just can't use a right hand retrieve.

Thanks for doing this review, I've been wondering about that reel since I first heard about it. I did see that tackle junkie did a casting test and it seemed pretty impressive for a low cost reel. I'm looking forward to getting one as a spare knock around on my jerk bait rig. Keep up the videos we all like it.

Looks like a great reel. Really love the Okuma rods and really should give the reel a shot . Noticed TW only had right hand retrieve though
i believe that was a typo on their end. Looks like they updated it. previously they would have two models with same gear ratio labeled as "right" which didn't make sense.

They actually offer all of the models in left and right hand. The TW site has a typo. All of the models listed as 101 are the left hand versions.

Great video as always debo!! I had to jump on here and tell you my experience with reel sizes. I recently started switching most of my rods to St. Croix and bought a few Victory rods (absolutely love them!) But I started off with a 200k on my 7'1 medium heavy victory but my hand started cramping up. I never realized just how small the handle is on those Victories. I ended up putting a 70mgl on there and it's now extremely comfortable. That Hakai must feel great on your Victory!

Been having my eye on okuma for a while, but been looking at the psycho stick, med-heavy 7'2" for finesse jigs, alot lately.
Those tiny ball on the spool really give my concern about there durability, especially when it come to salt water, we all know and can not avoid the reel bearing get dusty and being rust by the time, and with those tiny ball we can't even replace them like bearings
I gave up on waiting on the review of the SLX DC and I’ve already had my own for over a year. 🤣 I’m most interested in that Lews skip and pitch reel right now! This reel looks pretty sweet though!

Is the levelwind disengaging like the Okuma Helios and Shimano Tranx, or is the levelwind permanently engaged like the Okuma Komodo?
Baitcasters cast much further if the levelwind is disengaging.
Have you reviewed the curado 150 mgl yet? I now have one but have only owned bass pro baitcaster, from the pro qualifier on up the most expensive Johnny Morris platinum. The curado seems to cast much farther than any of the Bp reels. 20 lbs of drag is an incredible amount, definitely caught my attention

Great review from Debo as always. Just waiting for you to fall into the BFS rabbit hole. Maybe try out the Curado BFS on a medium light or light power rod. Really makes the dinks feel like donkeys

People are sleeping on this reel. Unfortunately, Okuma seems to have given up on marketing it heavily. I think that's Okuma's biggest fault. Otherwise, they make great reels and rods.
122$ on TW Black Friday sale, you would be silly not to just try one of these out.
I have come to rely upon your feelings about a real as pretty much gospel. now having said that it' s mostly because in the past I've found myself buying a reel simply because you said it was a good reel. i now know that once you look at a piece you'll give some personal feelings about how comfortable you are with a reel, the way it sits, it's castability, it's durability and it's flexibility. I've yet to disagree so now I just take it as a shared opinion. I prefer many of the features you prefer. Make my job as a consumer much much easier. By the way, the hidden deal of the century is the Daiwa Tatula 150, not the 100. The 150 has a 100 mm handle which with a set of Wynn knob covers may well be the most perfect reel ever invented. Not the lightest, it's actually a little heavy, it's not the coolest looking, could do without the spider on top, or simply not very flashy, I like that a lot. It is the smoothest, longest casting, quietest road worthy reel I've used. It is simpy put a "brick s^&t house". yowza

I like the price...however, I don't see a left handed retrieve in tackle warehouse.. I have the Shimano Curado 151 DC, which is the cats meow and I'm not spending another $250. Shimano comes with a 150 right hand retrieve and the 151, left handed retrieve. I saw in Tackle warehouse a 100 and 101, but both says right hand retrieve. Does it come in left handed retrieve?
There is a typo on the TW site. All of the models come in left and right hand retrieve. The models with the number 101 are all the lefties.

Why is it all the baitcasters r right handed. I have always used left-handed spinning reels. And I’m looking to get my first bait caster
Most companies have left-handed options now. I'm a southpaw, and have had left-handed reels from Daiwa, Abu Garcia, Kast King, even a Bass Pro Shops reel.

I’m sure it’s a decent reel, but the handle on it makes it a hard pass for me. I’m so partial to the way Shimano casting reels fit my hand I have a difficult time looking elsewhere. Curado K is the ultimate workhorse girl the price in my opinion.
I get that, a lot of those personal preference things can make or break a rod/reel!

I just got this real in the mail from tackle warehouse and I'm disappointed. If you pull in-and-out on the handle it clunks and if you rock the handle back and forth it clunks none of my other reels do it even my $100 quantum doesn't do it. Has anyone else had this problem?

The Reel Test was cool until he started getting religious. Him getting religious and preaching his beliefs are almost like how sports are getting political and pushing their agenda onto the viewers. We want to see fishing/sports and not be given an earful of their religion/politics.
I just scroll through the preachy part. The info he provided is still valuable.
