Should YOU Use Braided Fishing Line? Baitcaster or Spinning?

  • Today I'm taking you through whether or not YOU should use braided fishing line. I've seen a lot of opinions out there. However, I'll go through some facts about braid and what it REALLY is, the advantages/disadvantages of braid, and how I use braid in my bass fishing arsenal. I'll discuss brands, give you a closer look, and talk about things that most TH-cam videos simply skip over!

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

My wife asked me the other day, "How many fishing rods do I have"? I told her about 12 that I actually use. She asked why I need so many and I asked her, "How many shoes do you have?"

I use to have just my spinning rod and my fly rod. Then they were stolen last salmon season. Now I have 8 spinning combos, and 4 fly rod set ups.. they all have a purpose, or just feel damn good

These types of videos helped me a ton when I was getting into fishing last year. Definitely a lot of good points. One word of caution with thinner braid would be that it can cut through skin pretty easy. Use caution when pulling knots tight or landing fish. Another great viDebo bud!!

Here in the Netherlands it’s easy… if it’s Pike, Zander or Perch always braid. All you need to think about is is if you wanna use a pike proof leader and the line thickness.

I use braid on every reel I own as a main line. The distance you get is not even close to using all Mono/Fluoro. Now it hurt me today at the pier, I lost a very big Snook, at least 35-40 inches, because my leader wasn't long enough and it cut my braid on the pier piling! Thanks Debo!

Love this type of video Debo. Thanks for a great breakdown man!
I only have 3 rods right now and use straight braid on my non-cranking rod. I mainly use moving lures and don't worry so much about fish being line shy on a swim jig. I also only have the 3 reels so I want to be versatile and switch to frog fishing on that rod when the mood suits me. My spinning setup is actually also straight 10lb braid. I'm not a big believer (yet) in fish caring about seeing the line. I should try a leader, though, and see how that goes.

Love this type of video. I started with baitcast reels during the pandemic. I have tried several things, but at this point I have braid to fluorocarbon on all my setup (both spinning and baitcast) except my frog rod. It works for me and I have confidence in it at this point. My favorite braid is the Suffix 832, but I recently tried the Strike King tour braid (found it on sale at the DFW Scheels). I have it on my spinning set ups. I like the way it casts and I love the suction cup on the spool. It makes getting it on the reel a snap!
