  • The behavior for the all-new Toyota RAV4 in the avoidance maneuver test (aka moose test) is so dangerous that, until Toyota corrects the error, our advise is to not buy the car.

    My 2018 instantly turned into a Ferrari when I had to lock em up and perform evasive maneuver to the right. Maybe the built in safety system which I found to be absolutely the most incredible thing I have ever experienced in 46 years of driving doesn't fully engage without locking up brakes. I am not an employee of Toyota and never have been but maybe they could give me a shout. I get very excited when telling this true story in person. For full data disclosure could you tell us how much weight was loaded in the back seat?

      For me I calculate there’s a 2000-3000 saving per year the rav4 has over my current car. This includes savings in fuel, insurance and servicing. Over an ownership period of 7 years this’ll pay for the changeover plus I’ll be ahead with the residual value of the vehicle. So saving money is one reason people get this car.
      The product is compelling because I can’t remember the last time the “performance” model was hybrid. From standstill the instant torque from the electric engine makes the car “feel” pretty quick.
      Finally this is the best selling vehicle in the US (excluding trucks). This SUV outsells all of Mazda in the US. While you should take car reviews with a grain of salt, the market rarely lies.

    These cars have a very balanced (and sensitive) front/rear balance from my experience. I've found that under braking with a forward weight shift, the car tends to oversteer, but with no input and especially when throttle is applied, it tends to understeer. If you weren't applying the brakes, I would point my finger at the stability control system alternating rapidly to correct both conditions and making more of a mess than an assist

    Thank you for sharing the demonstration and video. I can say after living years in Austin and Houston, Texas that evasive maneuvering can be critical in the city due to hazards and traffic, and outside the city due to deer. While some may not have the experience to think a test like this is relevant, those of us in major cities or rural areas can vouch a vehicle's capability can mean the difference between avoiding an accident and having one. I appreciate the practical application of your test.

    • @MoeJae86
      @MoeJae86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s called being a proactive driver, not a reactive driver. Problem is people are not aware of their surroundings and it catches them off guard. I lived in Austin for 20 years and have encountered with many deer in the hill country in Cedar Park, Marble falls, and surrounding areas. I’ve made daily commutes to Dallas from East Texas. I also live in the boonies with deer, cows, horse, foxes, coyotes etc. If an animal jumps out in front I’m not going to risk dodging them. Rather have front end damage and to be upright than risk losing control hitting another car or pedestrian or flipping the car. If I hit a animal or it totals my car that’s what insurance is for. To be frank I don’t see the issue with RAV4 performance in this test. It’s pretty stable to me. You just gotta learn the car you drive, get familiar with its limitations, so your not caught off guard. Being a proactive driver especially in traffic requires your full attention and always looking two or three cars ahead, looking around you, know who’s in the next lane. So if some one slams on their brakes several cars ahead you’ll have time to react. Because of that I don’t have to resort to tactics like this wither it’s an animal or traffic.

    Teknikens Värld, Question, when you do the above moose test how is it performed, as I have read differing opinions on the subject. Is the test completed with no driver involvement apart from steering and applying the brakes at the end of the cones, or is braking performed during the cones by the driver? It would be good if you could advise how you actually do the moose test. I know you go through the cones and slowly increase the speed until the car fails, however that's all I really know.
    If braking is being done by the driver, let alone the ferocity and speed in which the wheel is turned, the grip and make of the tyres, the inflation of the tyres, driver skills.. etc etc then any car could be set up to fail, and quite easily I would imagine. I'm very, very, sceptical about youtube as if the publisher doesn't like a question...blip you can be deleted, or you are totally ignored which speaks volumes. Sometimes I wonder why people go to the trouble of uploading a video, as the end result for the viewers is to hear crickets from there questions asked.

    Would love it if this video could have a tiny windows showing the dash with how fast it is going and how much the wheel is being turned. This is just because of watching a video in suzuki samurai was failed in a roll-over test just by using more aggressive driving.

    The car esp let the back slide to avoid a roll over. Yes I read it from a forum.

      Makes sense, it’s a shame they couldn’t keep it totally stable all the way through, though

      Do you think it would skip like that if it was fwd? Or is it the brakes that are in use in this situation

      Jeragon186 usually ESP selectively applies the breaks when needed, FWD’s would handle slightly differently but, if anything, being AWD would help with stability
