I dont know why wiring specialties hasn't created a harness for this swap. This is really well done. I’m just having a hard time seeing why one would want to do this though. What’s worth it about it? I get that it’s the “better” motor but any of the shortcomings a DE has, it could be modified without just basically matching everything to be found under the hood of an HR. Just seems like a TON of investment for a slightly better motor.
It's only really worth it if you can buy a complete crashed hr. Take engine, trans, and everything you need. Part out the rest of the car and make your money back
@czwarlord9243 And you realize that's still massively cheaper after labor and parts, right? And that's an OEM motor without all the headache an engine swap comes with. This is a TERRIBLE investment of a swap, as cool as it seems in practice. At this point just go with an LS
So I was looking into this option. If I sold my Z in the state it's in (34k mile vq, but a busted turbo kit that can't pass inspection due to high idle from, again, a busted turbo kit), I'd need to purchase all the NA parts, replace the upper oil pan (Which I'm doing regardless of these options), and I'd have to note that the paint below the wrap is in "horrible condition" and has "severe" problems, including the previous owner raddle canning the hatch. Plus the car, previously a drift car, had unreported accidents. So in this case, by law, I'd be screwed if I sold this for a decent penny and, if I got $8,000 out of it. But if I bought a busted up, beaten, absolutely abused HR in 2024, I'd be looking at about $15,000. So the answer was more clear: Just fix up the current Z, get a proper paint job for it, instead of a wrap. Replace the "cheap" parts that were put on it, and since it does have an entirely authentic nismo kit (somehow lol), it would actually increase the value of this vehicle if I wanted to sell it one day. To the point I'm putting into it? Probably not. I'm putting a lot into this in the next half year (lol). But more than $8,000, and I can finally drive it again.

The answer to this question is no...if you actually go to a good place to do the wiring. Guilty Garage only requires the engine harness. Giving him the information he needs, he'll make the entire interior work without an issue. Pulling the Engine Harness out wasn't hard either. The difficult pat, the most difficult part, was getting the plug from the ECU out, which required figuring out where all the stupid little screws were hiding for the passenger dash (lol). It's in great condition and has been taken extremely great care of. However I've been looking into the different swap options for this car. I'd basically be deleting the AWD, I'm not sure if the OEM rear driveshaft is at the same spot as the RWD. This may be a deal breaker for me, hopefully it isn't. I just need to figure out weather I want to build a VQ37VHR for a supercharger rather than a TT set up. But if it's easier to do a VQ35HR swap, then I may go that route. Since it appears that there are more successful HR swaps. I may look into the V8 VK45DE swap or VR30DDTT swap as well. I basically want to stick with Nissan, rather then doing a cookie cutter LS1 swap.
HR is substantially less complicated than the VHR. There is 0 canbus backwards compatibility from the VHR to the HR or DE cars, and you end up having to run both the VHR ECU and the DE ECU to maintain communication to the DE body harness. It is possible to use a VHR block and rotating assembly with HR heads.
Yes. Just don't use the HR Strut Bar. The DE Strut Bar will work if you remove the plastic 'engine cover' that, probably, isn't with the engine you put in anyway lol.
He probably just never got one. Basically the HR brace requires you to use a HR hood, while the DE brace cannot use the valve cover but you can retain the DE hood.
Hey bro, Ive almost finished the swap and I'm using 350z DE engine mounts. From what I know the de/hr mounts r the same, and the VHR mounts are about 20mm higher. You need to use 350z gearbox mount and crossmember tho, 370z won't work
For me: VQ35HR w/ 40k miles: $2,000 JK41B w/ 50k miles: $1400 (Optional, but if your transmission didn't come with a CSC, you'll need one, so $200) Z1 CSC Elimination Delete Kit: $500 (Optional) Z1 Clutch Kit: $700 (Optional) Power Steering Reservoir w/ Bracket & Hoses: $50 (Optional) Windshield Wiper Filler Tube: $50 (Optional) 07-08 350z Radiator Support: $100 (Optional) 07-08 350z Radiator: $100 (Optional) 07-08 350z Coolant Res (aluminum): $250 (Optional) HR Headers (I got factory OEM due to me going with a turbo kit that utilizes them): $700 'new', $400 used (Went new) So if you avoid all optional and just do bare minimum, are creative with making your own easy metal 90-degree bracket (I could do this, I just chose not to, I work a pretty quality paying profession lol), you can get away with this at about $3300 - $3800 depending on sourcing material. But I spent a bit, and that was like in one-two months lol. The Harness Service varies, but the rate it's at now increases that by, let's say $700-1,000, so "all in", cheapest expense at about $4,000 if you don't get a donor car. If you can get a donor car, you're looking at probably much cheaper, assuming no one bids on it (lol) and you can pick it up. The reason I didn't go with a donor car is because each one got to over $4,000, and if I'm spending that much, I decided to (instead) find low mileage components that were useful, instead of a 200,000 mile "crashed" one. Mind you: - VQ35DE's regularly go for about $1200-1500 on Ebay, with the RevUps selling for about $2,000+ on a regular basis (I have a revup) - CD009's also sell regularly for about $1200-1300 You would receive about $3,000+ from selling those two components already, which will make this swap pretty much the harness, and whatever "optional" choices you choose.
@@andrewrodriguez7382To make this one simple, an LS swap, all in properly with a true Corvette LS, would be about $20,000 stock. If you wanted boosted (because 400whp on a turbo 350z wasn't enough so you wanted to swap to get more power), it's going to be a lot more. This is actually an easy low cost swap.
I was looking into both of these. It's significantly (And I mean significantly) more expensive to do either of these and make it street legal. Now if it's just for a track car, or you live in a state that doesn't care that much if the car has a Christmas tree, then it may be around the same cost. But both of those options are better for achieving significantly more power.
If you had your harness service done, confirm the pedal you're suppose to use. If you didn't get the harness service done, then that's your answer. Although as the dude above me insinuated, the throttle bodies also tend to throw codes with the HR, along with the RevUp (which was so little talked about lol). If you haven't figured this out yet, make sure your throttle position sensors are good, too.
call me a hater but HR swapping your G or Z for thousands of dollars only to gain extra 20 wheel hp is not worth it lol. Especially if you’re going to stay NA, it’s a waste imo. Yes the HR will handle over 500 wheel hp on a stock engine vs the DE being limited to under 500 and a safe 400 torque, but unless you ACTUALLY plan to swap an HR on a G35 or 350Z and ADD A CUSTOM TURBO KIT which not one person has, then it’s not worth it. At that point just sell your car make extra money and save up for an HR if you want, I once wanted to do an HR swap but I’m a DE boy.
@@rudyadan6113 I’ve heard people say DE is prone to burning significantly more than an HR, but there’s really no real statistical references. Technically speaking all VQs will or can burn oil, eventually. I only started noticing small oil consumption on my non revup DE at 160k miles, I think it can come down to how well maintained the engine is, and imo all VQs should have an OIL COOLER when starting out with mods and an oil catch can to stop your plenum from being soaked in oil 👍
My only consideration in doing an HR swap comes from my DE finally letting go and I cannot source another DE locally. There are a lot of HR cars with bad auto transmissions or wrecked for sale cheap here.
I agree, unless it's a problem with finding an 07 or 08. It's like the people who wanna swap an ls1 in a 3800 loaded camaro. It makes no sense financially. Just sell it and buy a z28.

I mean, not really. - Engine - Transmission - Power Steering Reservoir Bracket - Power Steering Lines - Clutch Assembly - Clutch Master Cylinder (and the Concentric Slave internal to the transmission) - Radiator Support - Radiator & Fans - Intakes - Exhaust Manifolds & Catalytic Converters/Test Pipes - ECU - Coolant Resevior - Windshield Wiper Filler Tube If you're doing the swap, the only changes you do need to do are: - Engine - Transmission - Clutch Assembly (a full clutch kit) - Clutch Master Cylinder (and if your transmission doesn't come with a concentric slave) - Intakes - Exhaust Manifold & Catalytic Converses/Test Pipes - ECU - Coolant Reservoir (or any kind) - Relocation of the Windshield Wiper Filler Tube (or get the 07-08 model) - Custom Harness You don't even need the radiator support, or even the HR radiator or fans, they just make clearances easier. If I was doing an LS swap, I'd need more than that, and most of it would be custom. In this case, most of it can be oem or oem replacement, which makes it an almost direct fit. Just taking the two major components out of the way, and keeping the 'bolt ons' off, you only need to: - Change the Clutch master cylinder, $70; Possibly replace the CSC, $200 (A few bolts after draining) - New bracket for the Power Steering Res, $50, or make it yourself for like $5 (A few bolts after draining) - Bend the nipple of the Power Steering hardline to clear the intake, $0 (One bolt after removing the front radiator support) - Coolant Res OEM ($200) or use anything for a coolant res ($?) (One-Two bolt) - Relocate your windshield wiper filler tube ($?) or buy the OEM 07-08 one $70) (1 clip) - An HR ECU, $150 (4 bolts and a few places to unclip) - New front Radiator (a couple bolts) w/ fans (another couple bolts) The hardest part of this build, for me, was getting the harness off the HR to ship it. I absolutely hate the clips on harnesses. With a stubby electric drill, everything took less than a couple hours.

I basically want to stick with Nissan, rather then doing a cookie cutter LS1 swap.
I find stuff adds up really fast and It’d be best cost effective wise to just rebuild and / or forge the de
Would these configurations work on a g35 coupe hr swap?
Obviously is the same thing
if anything us g35 owners have a bit more space especially sedans
Yes but it's actually not 100% the same, and the harness service is more expensive. Otherwise, yes so long as you keep it manual.
What part of Mississippi?
How did you avoid the issue with the hood clearance?
Take off the strut bar and engine cover.
Would a 2004 hood fit my 07 hr
Yes. Just don't use the HR Strut Bar. The DE Strut Bar will work if you remove the plastic 'engine cover' that, probably, isn't with the engine you put in anyway lol.
No struct tower brace?
He probably just never got one. Basically the HR brace requires you to use a HR hood, while the DE brace cannot use the valve cover but you can retain the DE hood.
Bro im doing a vq37vhr on a 350z at chassis do you have an email so you can help me im from Panama🇵🇦

Are the motor/transmission mounts de or hr ?
Hey bro, Ive almost finished the swap and I'm using 350z DE engine mounts. From what I know the de/hr mounts r the same, and the VHR mounts are about 20mm higher. You need to use 350z gearbox mount and crossmember tho, 370z won't work
@@KnockoutR6 oh ok I see thanks for getting back !!
Subbed.
How much did it cost all together
For me:
VQ35HR w/ 40k miles: $2,000
JK41B w/ 50k miles: $1400
(Optional, but if your transmission didn't come with a CSC, you'll need one, so $200) Z1 CSC Elimination Delete Kit: $500
(Optional) Z1 Clutch Kit: $700
(Optional) Power Steering Reservoir w/ Bracket & Hoses: $50
(Optional) Windshield Wiper Filler Tube: $50
(Optional) 07-08 350z Radiator Support: $100
(Optional) 07-08 350z Radiator: $100
(Optional) 07-08 350z Coolant Res (aluminum): $250
(Optional) HR Headers (I got factory OEM due to me going with a turbo kit that utilizes them): $700 'new', $400 used (Went new)
So if you avoid all optional and just do bare minimum, are creative with making your own easy metal 90-degree bracket (I could do this, I just chose not to, I work a pretty quality paying profession lol), you can get away with this at about $3300 - $3800 depending on sourcing material.
Mind you:
- VQ35DE's regularly go for about $1200-1500 on Ebay, with the RevUps selling for about $2,000+ on a regular basis (I have a revup)
- CD009's also sell regularly for about $1200-1300
You would receive about $3,000+ from selling those two components already, which will make this swap pretty much the harness, and whatever "optional" choices you choose.
@ you’re goated
@@andrewrodriguez7382To make this one simple, an LS swap, all in properly with a true Corvette LS, would be about $20,000 stock. If you wanted boosted (because 400whp on a turbo 350z wasn't enough so you wanted to swap to get more power), it's going to be a lot more. This is actually an easy low cost swap.
I would just put an ls or 2jz better engine for all the work you did
I was looking into both of these. It's significantly (And I mean significantly) more expensive to do either of these and make it street legal. Now if it's just for a track car, or you live in a state that doesn't care that much if the car has a Christmas tree, then it may be around the same cost. But both of those options are better for achieving significantly more power.
I did this swap and I’m having issues getting power to the pedal.
put hr peddle in
@@itsst0ckB58 I’ll have to check if we did. Just had my first kid, named roman. Funny
@@MountainCamber that’s such a coincidence 😭
When I did my swap. My throttle bodies went to crap. I did however replace my pedal with an HR one but it didn’t change anything.
Will a hr trans fit on a de motor
no
No
Why?
A lot of work just to keep it stock just me tho
jah bless
call me a hater but HR swapping your G or Z for thousands of dollars only to gain extra 20 wheel hp is not worth it lol. At that point just sell your car make extra money and save up for an HR if you want, I once wanted to do an HR swap but I’m a DE boy.
they also burn oil, i consider it a downgrade
What burns oil more a DE or HR
I have no way to get ahold of Eric, I’ve tried instagram, facebook, internet but still nothing at all. Do you know if he is no longer in business?
I am still rocking! What’s your name?
@@Guilty1s Fancy seeing you here lol, really cool that you actually replied man. I actually misspoke when I said that I had tried Facebook. I however have been chatting with a fellow by the name of Micheal and he said that Facebook is the way to reach you. You can expect an inbox from Mitchell M. in the near future regarding your harness building service my friend.
Hey bro can we have a conversation some time from one Mississippi brother to another? Tbh i really need your help
Na
Way to many changes for the hr motor
I mean, not really.
- Engine
- Transmission
- Power Steering Reservoir Bracket
- Power Steering Lines
- Clutch Assembly
- Clutch Master Cylinder (and the Concentric Slave internal to the transmission)
- Radiator Support
- Radiator & Fans
- Intakes
- Exhaust Manifolds & Catalytic Converters/Test Pipes
- ECU
- Coolant Resevior
- Windshield Wiper Filler Tube
If you're doing the swap, the only changes you do need to do are:
- Engine
- Transmission
- Clutch Assembly (a full clutch kit)
- Clutch Master Cylinder (and if your transmission doesn't come with a concentric slave)
- Intakes
- Exhaust Manifold & Catalytic Converses/Test Pipes
- ECU
- Coolant Reservoir (or any kind)
- Relocation of the Windshield Wiper Filler Tube (or get the 07-08 model)
- Custom Harness
You don't even need the radiator support, or even the HR radiator or fans, they just make clearances easier. If I was doing an LS swap, I'd need more than that, and most of it would be custom. In this case, most of it can be oem or oem replacement, which makes it an almost direct fit.
Just taking the two major components out of the way, and keeping the 'bolt ons' off, you only need to:
- Change the Clutch master cylinder, $70; Possibly replace the CSC, $200 (A few bolts after draining)
- New bracket for the Power Steering Res, $50, or make it yourself for like $5 (A few bolts after draining)
- Bend the nipple of the Power Steering hardline to clear the intake, $0 (One bolt after removing the front radiator support)
- Coolant Res OEM ($200) or use anything for a coolant res ($?) (One-Two bolt)
- Relocate your windshield wiper filler tube ($?) or buy the OEM 07-08 one $70) (1 clip)
- An HR ECU, $150 (4 bolts and a few places to unclip)
- New front Radiator (a couple bolts) w/ fans (another couple bolts)
The hardest part of this build, for me, was getting the harness off the HR to ship it. I absolutely hate the clips on harnesses. With a stubby electric drill, everything took less than a couple hours.
