The HR also has much more stout connecting rods then the de and rev-up, which makes the HR a favorite for the boosted guys who don't wan't to invest in a engine building. The HR is better by almost every measurable metric, though the cost to swap them into a Z or G that originally came with a DE or Rev-Up is absurd. You can build a DE or Rev-Up for around the same cost as a swap, in some cases, and give yourself something that will hold 2 or 3 times the power of a stock HR. That's 100% right. Honestly, the worst part about a swap is getting the supporting parts to go with it, whether it's the harnesess, the labor to wire everything, mounts, transmission adapters. It's why I've abandoned a VR30 swap because building a bottom end for a VQ37 is way cheaper and will hold way more power than what i'm after.

Eddie Dugan...I have a 2004 Maxima 3.5 motor. Currently running 207,435 miles on it. So far? Runs quite well. I cleaned the two VVT units (They sit on the top of the engine on both banks). The cleaning did the job of allowing the engine to run much smoother. One can buy new ones but I'm cheap. And cleaning them were real easy to do. Two bolts to remove them. Once the plenum is off for the firewall side. Did the timing chain at around 80,000. Water pump while the timing cover was off. And replaced the chain. It really didn't need replacement but since I had to change out the chain guide (made of hardened plastic I would guess) I did it. I rebuilt the care from the wheels up. This maxima was sitting in a garage for almost 6 years. In real good condition. In closing....I really like Nissan products. I've had my share of headaches working on this car but once I got a handle on it? I'm ok with it. Good luck with your wheels bud.
if you plan on keeping internals stock, buy a hr. if you want to build the engine, de. the cost difference alone between the two cars and you can almost build the DE to hold 600+hp, reliably.
alfred rodriguez no way man. I’ve been both routes lol. The hr and VHR are a better motor for big power. And you have to spend a LOT on a De for everything forged versus buying a used bottom end off a g37 or 370 for cheap... then it only takes a few forged parts to get to the same power..
Gordon A so your saying stock bottom end will hold 1k? Ok, what was your build on the DE? Forged rods, pistons, bullet girdle, billet oil pump, sleeved, etc? You might need a few more parts, like the girdle, but nothing crazy.
alfred rodriguez Mybad I don’t think I wrote that clearly enough. Most built DE’s aren’t pushing 1000whp. And if so ur talking about a LOT of money. Most built DE’s are 650-800whp. My point was that if you’re starting from scratch, the better choice is the HR. Since most people aren’t ganna go from a 280whp car to a 1000whp car. If ur trying to do that then MAYBE the fully built DE is the cheaper option, but that’s also assuming you have zero draw backs... the HR motor on the other hand is good for about 500whp reliably as long as u don’t have an already worn out motor. If that motor blows, you can buy a VHR bottom end and bolt it right up (no ecu or wiring harness swap). That right there is good for about 600-700whp. From there, only a FEW forged parts are needed to handle 800+ whp. Which in my scenario, is a lot less money thrown at the car all at once. Versus when my DE blew, I needed to dump a LOT of money in parts In order to get the same results my stock HR motor made. Also in my personal experience there was constantly issues with the DE in comparison to the HR.

Thanks for a great explanation of the differences. I have owned every generation of Z car and have had every engine from L24 I6 to VQ37VHR in my '12 Z34N. I have long been critical of those that say the "HR is better and the DE is junk!" All I can say is "Well, it is and it had better be. It's newer, evolved." Stands to reason that the VHR is arguably a better engine than the '07-08 HR, yes? Again, it better be. And what about the Red Sport VR30DDTT (from the Q50S Red Sport), rumored to be the next Z's (Z35) engine? Is it the supreme Z engine? Again, it better be. Point is, so many "HR is king" people seem to think if they have an HR car, they're so much better than those of us who "only" have DEs. Get over it. And while you're at it, stop referring to '07-08 Z cars (and the matching HR engine Q-cars) as "an HR". It's just a 350Z that happens to have the next evolution of the VQ35xx. Bought a rust and damage free stripped 2004 z and put it back together using a rolled 2008 z. The HR motor is a beast, way more rev happy and fun to drive than my previous 03 z that I sold. If you want to build the ultimate naturally aspirated car cheaply the HR is the way to go, HR block, heads and rods with a 3.7 crank and special 12.5:1 JWT pistons along with tomei 272 or 280 cams would be one sick street engine.
Nice! Liked and sub'd. This is the most informed DE vs HR video that I've seen yet. Even linked to the Nissan motor publications. I also have a copy of a leaked Nissan ppt slide deck with even more info. I bought a new 2006 "DE-revup" 350z manual which had oil consumption issues. I dumped that car early on for a new 2007 HR which I still own today. The HR was/is noticeably faster. But why? The 2006 was rated for 300 HP and the 2007 was rated for 'only' 306 HP. Truth is, up through 2006, Nissan was not using SAE ratings to publish horsepower. Laws changed in 2007 that SAE ratings were required so Nissan built a new engine. I have a dyno sheet with both 2006 (Throttle body spacer) and stock 2007 numbers run on the same dyno and in the upper RPMs (5k-7k), the DE falls off and the HR has a 40HP advantage between 6k and 7k. My 2007 stock was putting down 262 HP at the wheels and with bolt-ons and tune, it's up to 301HP at the wheels. These are dynojet, SAE corrected numbers. So 40 HP difference stock plus 40 HP from bolt-ons and it's surprisingly faster than a stock DE. Below 4500 RPM, the HR only has a slight advantage. Biggest HR win though is that it has a dedicated oil dipstick tube :-). DE dipstick uses an engine oil return passage so it's herd to get a clear read. Another great advantage of HR is that the hot coolant return from the engine is routed to the radiator externally keeping that heat out of the engine. I'm, keeping my HR 350z till the wheels fall off.
You can build a DE to take just as much HP reliably as a HR, the DE Is a way better platform and there’s more tunability for it which is why I’m sticking to this platform
You should do a video on the 35HR heads on a VQ37 block.. I hear it works and does wonders in the boosted world! Great video btw with regards to VQ35DE vs VQ35HR!
I'm really glad you mentioned the wider torque range if the HR. Most people believe that the DE makes more torque simply because of the peak number, when in reality, it only makes more torque in a very limited section of the power band. HR makes more average torque across the whole rev range.
Brandon sever Driving DE around the town you may notice that transmission is tuned to keep rpm in 2.5k-3.5k range to compensate insufficient torque @low rpm, while HR produces same torque in 1.5k-3k rpm range giving better fuel economy and less exhaust noise :)
@@paxa007 Never driven an automatic, but I own a 2007 Z with a manual trans and I almost never feel the need to downshift for more passing power on the highway. Feels great around 2-3k. It's no v8 down low, but not bad for a v6 lol.
I have a great video of my HR sedan racing a 2003 6MT coupe. We were neck & neck at 120mph.... Pretty much neck & neck through the entire PowerBand. (I took off on him at the redlight because my HR is a G35xS & not many people are getting me at a red-light. In any weather condition. I spanked a 392 scatpack the other day because he spun *forever* & admitted he couldn't launch his car from a dead stop without burning rubber. He didn't expect my car to pull the way it did, & even admitted he was going to go home & research some Infiniti stuff since they are always running good around this area. He was cool AF.. (I wish I would've gotten that interaction video)
To be honest, I'd side with the DE over the HR, the reason being that replacing the GM3800. while the 3800 has been abuse-proof I like the VQ noise, and retrofitting that in place of the geriatric donk would inject a lot of life into my ol' bore-a-door. Ignoring mating up the 'mission to the engine, I wonder if a more lively bent six would be better than the factory lazy six as a daily.
Dude great video. I learned a lot and true the DE is better to boost. Replacement cost 1000.0 to 1700.00 HR good luck. But if I was to build a 650 hp to 750whp I would want the HR for sure. Thank you so much for you input on the great Nissan legacy of the 350z. I got 2 of them
Great video! Side note. DE blocks are discontinued in North America and there are none in any warehouses. You will have to wait on one from Japan if you need a brand new one! Don't ask me how I know this! Lol.
I managed to find my 08 hr with only 60k miles a 6mt and completely bone stock. Only problem came when it was time to buy it. They knew what they had and knew I wanted it haha. But now at 80k miles and the thing is a beast.
I got a first gen Skyline crossover (J80) with a VQ35HR just over a hundred k miles love her never had any issues however this is due to a meticulous maintenance regimen. Since the HR provides so much power the trannys take a good beating if fluid is not changed every 30k especially since the filter is not a "serviceable' during a transmission service they just drain and fill.
Yes complete ball ache expensive job my mate helped me do mine saved about 1k. Then about 7 months after had to do the CSC but I was changing my clutch at the same time so that wasn't that bad.
I have owned both an 06 base rwd sedan with the VQ35de and 60,000 miles and an 07 rwd automatic journey sedan with 75,000 miles with the VQ35hr and sold the 06 a month later after buying it to buy my 07 which I still own lol I love my VQ35hr it's definitely a great engine
One thing I never see discussed is the cam crossover at 4000-4200rpm in the HR. It's almost like a Vtec effect that hits and is followed by an increase in sound and power. I guess it's part of Nissan's 'Swell' they talk about when tuning the power delivery/powerband.
I drive a Nissan murano 2oo6 and and it still goes like it was brand new, just touch that key and that motor is purring like a happy cat lol, every time I start her up I get a chill down my spine from that heathy sound, even the cvt gearbox is still working smoothly and the fuel efficiency is surprisingly good too, for me Nissan is tops deffo, I'm the second owner of this car so never bought it new but its still in perfect condition and even better after I got it as I've done many things to it that a factory won't like rust treating and rubberizing the complete undercarriage and wheel wells and many other things, I'll only do that on a car worth it and that Nissan suv certainly is 👍, so many ppl look at my car and ask if I'm not selling it but theres no chance, I've owned a Datsun Skyline 1800 many yrs ago and completely rebuilt and sprayed it and it got stolen here in South Africa sadly but thats where my love for Datsun/Nissan started and this Murano is built much the same way my old Datsun was
I own a 2002 Infiniti I35 with the VQ35DE, the only fault it has is burning oil. 210K miles and still runs like a clock. Can't argue with quality design of the VQ35DE!
I love the car world man every likes there own thing I don’t care if you like civics or if you like bmw or what every every car is cool to me some times you got to find little things you like about every car
Which one is better is really dependent on the use of the engine & budget. The HR is more expensive to purchase and you will need a more advanced ECU to run the dual VVT. Having said that, even though the DE is cheaper to purchase, what would it take to get the DE to make the "300HP" that the HR does? NA: Cams, valve seats & compression bump (then you might have to look at alternative fuels) Boosted: Lots of heat, complexity & cost. I haven't run these numbers but it is likely that your $per HP is better spent on an HR. Get the HR with a good ECU, beautiful sounding exhaust & then do a ridiculous burnout!
@@RESTORATIONRESCUE HR engine only very few in my country. Maybe less than 3. Only 1 gotten sell but already lost in track that car. If know the brand is.. gonna be tuned up that part.
Arthur Wall My mom got the Q50 3.7 and I got my baby the G37 which I love it. The main difference that I experience is 3,500-rpm torque peak from Q50 is more preferable to the current 5,200 rpm.from the G37
There's no question the HR is the superior engine, stock and modified. The DE is still a very good engine, but definitely lacking in comparison. I've owned both.
Im thinking or fully rebuilding my DE, and i believe it has the potential to hang with the HR once all the internal components have been upgraded. Yes, the block is overall better in design for the HR, but like he said, it is cheaper and more available to get a DE rather than an HR. What's your opinion?
Good overview on the differences. The same seems to apply to quite many other parts also. Our european project HR has 313hp so i'm assuming that version was not available in your market area?
Simple, going ball to the wall power? The VR38 is better. You have the advance of greater displacement and you dont have to deal with direct inject which is more of a pain to tune and really don't offer any benefit at that level of power when everything else is upgraded(injects and fuel pump). When it comes to sipping fuel at moderate power levels then VR3DD
8/15/24: just seen this. My 2009 fx35 is now over 200 thou. It starting to show some oil leaks, and not running as good anymore now. Is there a good mech. in the Poincianna area of Florida avail. That could get this suv back to some standard running. I luv this suv, and will drive it until it dies, or me.
The HR and VHR will always be a better performance engine out the box and the DE will be the better financial option for your wallet in my opinion they all are fun without noting the obvious fact of performance differences.Alot of DE owners can say many cars have seen their tail lights I know I can. Real truth is a VR38DETT under your hood would be a mans best friend😎
The internals on an HR are 80% stronger than the DE. DE can hold up to 400whp safely. HR can hold between 500-550whp safely, but I have seen over 600whp on stock internals. Best to cap at 500whp on HR. Regardless of which platform, maintenance is key to keeping your engine strong and reliable. I have an 08 Z, almost fbo (need headers and replace gutted cats with test pipes) 160,000+ miles, 314whp 271wtq, 12.97 1/4 mile at 108. Super reliable engine considering how I drive and that I drag it often.

Thanks for watching 👍
um you really think nissan made the hr in less than a year? no the HR was in the design years before hand
Just picked up a HR sedan. I love the throttle response
You can build a DE to take just as much HP reliably as a HR, the DE Is a way better platform and there’s more tunability for it which is why I’m sticking to this platform
Translation: I got stuck with a DE and now I'm coping with my loss
You should do a video on the 35HR heads on a VQ37 block.. I hear it works and does wonders in the boosted world! Great video btw with regards to VQ35DE vs VQ35HR!
how's my DE's doing?
So are All 07 & 08 HR?
One wrong thing. the 2006 350z got the regular DE if it was an automatic
I have a 2006 Grand Touring. Its an automatic and it has a DE
I have a 350z de. Better for a budget build.
Yeah then you can just tune it
I just bought a DE. What's the easiest cheapest mods I should do first?

Can you do a video about the VQ37VHR?
Added to my list of videos to make 😬
It's basically a stroked out HR block with increased CR and VVEL head.
@@imty8774 yes and that's a bigger difference than the de and hr.
@@Dustrunnersauto I would also very much appreciate if you did, i was going to ask the same thing^
Dust Runners Automotive Journal do a video on VQ37HR vs the new 3.0 TT engine
I had 35 anniversary Z. With Rev up. Great car. 7k redline. I should of kept my Z. The vq was a very reliable motor. Great weird sound.
My 1st stock G35 Rev Up with 6MT ...I Luv it !
I got 2 of them
Great video, I'm researching this subject currently, thanks a bunch
Great video! Side note. DE blocks are discontinued in North America and there are none in any warehouses. You will have to wait on one from Japan if you need a brand new one! Don't ask me how I know this! Lol.
Can you do the vhr vs hr would be a good one
🤔
Yes pls
Yeaaa
Just do it!
James Nunez same thing besides .2 bigger and VVEL. but HR heads have been proven to be better when going for power
I managed to find my 08 hr with only 60k miles a 6mt and completely bone stock. Only problem came when it was time to buy it. They knew what they had and knew I wanted it haha. But now at 80k miles and the thing is a beast.
My Fuga 370 GT has 11:1 compression ratio. I've only had her a couple weeks and I love driving it so much.
2:36 this is what blow out first at your HR (oil gallery gaskets)
Facts just happened to me on a strong ass motor too 😂. Hope the new one got some kick to it too watch me get a lemon
Yes complete ball ache expensive job my mate helped me do mine saved about 1k. Then about 7 months after had to do the CSC but I was changing my clutch at the same time so that wasn't that bad.
Having both soon, I own a 09" g37s coupe as my daily, now getting a DE 350z soon as my weekends car on april 2025! 🙌
I appreciate the DE always 🤞🏾
When I hit that range in my VQ37VHR shit gets real

I drive a Nissan murano 2oo6 and and it still goes like it was brand new, just touch that key and that motor is purring like a happy cat lol, every time I start her up I get a chill down my spine from that heathy sound, even the cvt gearbox is still working smoothly and the fuel efficiency is surprisingly good too, for me Nissan is tops deffo, I'm the second owner of this car so never bought it new but its still in perfect condition and even better after I got it as I've done many things to it that a factory won't like rust treating and rubberizing the complete undercarriage and wheel wells and many other things, I'll only do that on a car worth it and that Nissan suv certainly is 👍, so many ppl look at my car and ask if I'm not selling it but theres no chance, I've owned a Datsun Skyline 1800 many yrs ago and completely rebuilt and sprayed it and it got stolen here in South Africa sadly but thats where my love for Datsun/Nissan started and this Murano is built much the same way my old Datsun was
Great Vid good info I like that you left any bias out of it just info Thank you.

In Australia the 35th anniversary touring model did get the revup engine

I love the car world man every likes there own thing I don’t care if you like civics or if you like bmw or what every every car is cool to me some times you got to find little things you like about every car
Which one is better is really dependent on the use of the engine & budget.
The HR is more expensive to purchase and you will need a more advanced ECU to run the dual VVT.
Having said that, even though the DE is cheaper to purchase, what would it take to get the DE to make the "300HP" that the HR does?
NA: Cams, valve seats & compression bump (then you might have to look at alternative fuels)
Boosted: Lots of heat, complexity & cost.
I haven't run these numbers but it is likely that your $per HP is better spent on an HR.
Get the HR with a good ECU, beautiful sounding exhaust & then do a ridiculous burnout!
Does HR burn oil like DE?

I love my infiniti Q50 2014 with the 3.7 is a Beast!
Arthur Wall My mom got the Q50 3.7 and I got my baby the G37 which I love it. The main difference that I experience is 3,500-rpm torque peak from Q50 is more preferable to the current 5,200 rpm.from the G37
I have a 04 De but would love to get a 07 hr cause the hr platform is way easier to push better power figures than the De
3:40 Ive never seen that strut bar thing connecting the 2 air boxes before
My 04 maxima has a 3.5 DE and it's a bit of a beast with my upgrades.
Just got my hr 🤘🏾
Good overview on the differences. The same seems to apply to quite many other parts also. Our european project HR has 313hp so i'm assuming that version was not available in your market area?
Good info, thanks!
Do you have a video on the cvt transmissions
CVT, ah don't do it
Infiniti does not use CVT and nissan does not put them in their performance cars.
Good video. I would have liked to see more comparisons between DE rev up and HR given HR is essentially only rev up. Thanks!
Thank you for this helpful information
Please guys i you have the manual on pdf format please share it for Nissan VQ 35DE on rsylla8205@gmail.com. please please
Doesn’t matter what vq u have the first thing to buy is a light fly wheel trust me on that it’s so much fricking fun to drive
Very educational but i think nitish21 would think differently with his 900hp VQ35DE. Im kidding he has a hr build aswell
Do a VR30DDTT vs VR38DETT.
Did they fix the plenum issue with the Rev Up version in 2006?
Thanks for info. I have the HR motor

Thanks for the informative information I’ve been trying to decide which 350 I would rather have definitely an HR
I would def recommend it bud far better motor
8/15/24: just seen this. My 2009 fx35 is now over 200 thou. It starting to show some oil leaks, and not running as good anymore now. Is there a good mech. in the Poincianna area of Florida avail. That could get this suv back to some standard running. I luv this suv, and will drive it until it dies, or me.
De is for the stock and casual daily driver. Hr is for mods and more top end
I see you show Sasha's 350z when speaking about the hr?
I thought he ran a de block?
So you can Turbo an HR without having to mess with internals since Nissan already strengthened them from factory?
The internals on an HR are 80% stronger than the DE. DE can hold up to 400whp safely. HR can hold between 500-550whp safely, but I have seen over 600whp on stock internals. Best to cap at 500whp on HR. Regardless of which platform, maintenance is key to keeping your engine strong and reliable. I have an 08 Z, almost fbo (need headers and replace gutted cats with test pipes) 160,000+ miles, 314whp 271wtq, 12.97 1/4 mile at 108. Super reliable engine considering how I drive and that I drag it often.
Thank you for the great info !
Was there ever a fwd HR ?
Very informative.
I am looking for this same information on the VQ37 line up
Hello, is the Vq35hr a direct injection engine?
Thanks mate looking at buying an el grand 3.5 know l know what will be better
The only good thing about the de is its easier to replace the slave cylinder unlike the hr which you pretty much have to remove the transmission.
