Gordon A so your saying stock bottom end will hold 1k? Ok, what was your build on the DE? Forged rods, pistons, bullet girdle, billet oil pump, sleeved, etc? You might need a few more parts, like the girdle, but nothing crazy.
alfred rodriguez Mybad I don’t think I wrote that clearly enough. Most built DE’s aren’t pushing 1000whp. And if so ur talking about a LOT of money. Most built DE’s are 650-800whp. My point was that if you’re starting from scratch, the better choice is the HR. Since most people aren’t ganna go from a 280whp car to a 1000whp car. If ur trying to do that then MAYBE the fully built DE is the cheaper option, but that’s also assuming you have zero draw backs... the HR motor on the other hand is good for about 500whp reliably as long as u don’t have an already worn out motor. If that motor blows, you can buy a VHR bottom end and bolt it right up (no ecu or wiring harness swap). That right there is good for about 600-700whp. From there, only a FEW forged parts are needed to handle 800+ whp. Which in my scenario, is a lot less money thrown at the car all at once. Versus when my DE blew, I needed to dump a LOT of money in parts In order to get the same results my stock HR motor made. Also in my personal experience there was constantly issues with the DE in comparison to the HR.

It seems Nissan and Infiniti still make more reliable engines than Subaru, Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai/Kia/Genesis. Hope Nissan/Infiniti can rise to the greatness of Toyota/Lexus and Honda/Acura once again very soon.
Thanks for a great explanation of the differences. I have owned every generation of Z car and have had every engine from L24 I6 to VQ37VHR in my '12 Z34N. I have long been critical of those that say the "HR is better and the DE is junk!" All I can say is "Well, it is and it had better be. It's newer, evolved." Stands to reason that the VHR is arguably a better engine than the '07-08 HR, yes? Again, it better be. And what about the Red Sport VR30DDTT (from the Q50S Red Sport), rumored to be the next Z's (Z35) engine? Is it the supreme Z engine? Again, it better be. Point is, so many "HR is king" people seem to think if they have an HR car, they're so much better than those of us who "only" have DEs. Get over it. And while you're at it, stop referring to '07-08 Z cars (and the matching HR engine Q-cars) as "an HR". It's just a 350Z that happens to have the next evolution of the VQ35xx. After 25 Z cars over 40-some years, including some rare ones and Nismo versions, the only remaining one is my DE powered '03 which I still love dearly.
I had a 96 Maxima 5 speed with a VQ30de. Older then these two variants but it had 400,000 miles on the clock and was my track/daily. Ran perfectly till the moment it was T-boned by a 4 runner running a red light.
You can build a DE to take just as much HP reliably as a HR, the DE Is a way better platform and there’s more tunability for it which is why I’m sticking to this platform
Thanks for sharing. I've got a 2008 base manual, I track it roughly once a month and live close to a very curvy mountain road out in the middle of nowhere. For the past 6 yrs I've beat the shit out of mine at least once a week on the mtn road and the past 2 yrs at the track.
Thanks for the video man. Nice to see a simple attempt at explaining the differences with some aid of the visuals. I already knew the majority of the changes, but it was still useful for me given the way you presented it and with the visuals. Cheers.
Bought a rust and damage free stripped 2004 z and put it back together using a rolled 2008 z. The HR motor is a beast, way more rev happy and fun to drive than my previous 03 z that I sold. If you want to build the ultimate naturally aspirated car cheaply the HR is the way to go, HR block, heads and rods with a 3.7 crank and special 12.5:1 JWT pistons along with tomei 272 or 280 cams would be one sick street engine.
Nice! Liked and sub'd. This is the most informed DE vs HR video that I've seen yet. Even linked to the Nissan motor publications. I also have a copy of a leaked Nissan ppt slide deck with even more info. I bought a new 2006 "DE-revup" 350z manual which had oil consumption issues. I dumped that car early on for a new 2007 HR which I still own today. The HR was/is noticeably faster. But why? The 2006 was rated for 300 HP and the 2007 was rated for 'only' 306 HP. Truth is, up through 2006, Nissan was not using SAE ratings to publish horsepower. Laws changed in 2007 that SAE ratings were required so Nissan built a new engine. I have a dyno sheet with both 2006 (Throttle body spacer) and stock 2007 numbers run on the same dyno and in the upper RPMs (5k-7k), the DE falls off and the HR has a 40HP advantage between 6k and 7k. My 2007 stock was putting down 262 HP at the wheels and with bolt-ons and tune, it's up to 301HP at the wheels. These are dynojet, SAE corrected numbers. So 40 HP difference stock plus 40 HP from bolt-ons and it's surprisingly faster than a stock DE. Below 4500 RPM, the HR only has a slight advantage. Biggest HR win though is that it has a dedicated oil dipstick tube :-). DE dipstick uses an engine oil return passage so it's herd to get a clear read. Another great advantage of HR is that the hot coolant return from the engine is routed to the radiator externally keeping that heat out of the engine. I'm, keeping my HR 350z till the wheels fall off.
To be honest, I'd side with the DE over the HR, the reason being that replacing the GM3800. while the 3800 has been abuse-proof I like the VQ noise, and retrofitting that in place of the geriatric donk would inject a lot of life into my ol' bore-a-door. Ignoring mating up the 'mission to the engine, I wonder if a more lively bent six would be better than the factory lazy six as a daily.
I'm really glad you mentioned the wider torque range if the HR. Most people believe that the DE makes more torque simply because of the peak number, when in reality, it only makes more torque in a very limited section of the power band. HR makes more average torque across the whole rev range.
Brandon sever Driving DE around the town you may notice that transmission is tuned to keep rpm in 2.5k-3.5k range to compensate insufficient torque @low rpm, while HR produces same torque in 1.5k-3k rpm range giving better fuel economy and less exhaust noise :)
@@paxa007 Never driven an automatic, but I own a 2007 Z with a manual trans and I almost never feel the need to downshift for more passing power on the highway. Feels great around 2-3k. It's no v8 down low, but not bad for a v6 lol.
You should do a video on the 35HR heads on a VQ37 block.. I hear it works and does wonders in the boosted world! Great video btw with regards to VQ35DE vs VQ35HR!
I own a 2002 Infiniti I35 with the VQ35DE, the only fault it has is burning oil. 210K miles and still runs like a clock. Can't argue with quality design of the VQ35DE!
Dude great video. I learned a lot and true the DE is better to boost. Replacement cost 1000.0 to 1700.00 HR good luck. But if I was to build a 650 hp to 750whp I would want the HR for sure. Thank you so much for you input on the great Nissan legacy of the 350z. I got 2 of them
Which one is better is really dependent on the use of the engine & budget. The HR is more expensive to purchase and you will need a more advanced ECU to run the dual VVT. Having said that, even though the DE is cheaper to purchase, what would it take to get the DE to make the "300HP" that the HR does? NA: Cams, valve seats & compression bump (then you might have to look at alternative fuels) Boosted: Lots of heat, complexity & cost. I haven't run these numbers but it is likely that your $per HP is better spent on an HR. Get the HR with a good ECU, beautiful sounding exhaust & then do a ridiculous burnout!
I have owned both an 06 base rwd sedan with the VQ35de and 60,000 miles and an 07 rwd automatic journey sedan with 75,000 miles with the VQ35hr and sold the 06 a month later after buying it to buy my 07 which I still own lol I love my VQ35hr it's definitely a great engine
I managed to find my 08 hr with only 60k miles a 6mt and completely bone stock. Only problem came when it was time to buy it. They knew what they had and knew I wanted it haha. But now at 80k miles and the thing is a beast.
Yes complete ball ache expensive job my mate helped me do mine saved about 1k. Then about 7 months after had to do the CSC but I was changing my clutch at the same time so that wasn't that bad.
I got a first gen Skyline crossover (J80) with a VQ35HR just over a hundred k miles love her never had any issues however this is due to a meticulous maintenance regimen. Since the HR provides so much power the trannys take a good beating if fluid is not changed every 30k especially since the filter is not a "serviceable' during a transmission service they just drain and fill.
Great video! Side note. DE blocks are discontinued in North America and there are none in any warehouses. You will have to wait on one from Japan if you need a brand new one! Don't ask me how I know this! Lol.
I have a great video of my HR sedan racing a 2003 6MT coupe. We were neck & neck at 120mph.... Pretty much neck & neck through the entire PowerBand. (I took off on him at the redlight because my HR is a G35xS & not many people are getting me at a red-light. In any weather condition. I spanked a 392 scatpack the other day because he spun *forever* & admitted he couldn't launch his car from a dead stop without burning rubber. He didn't expect my car to pull the way it did, & even admitted he was going to go home & research some Infiniti stuff since they are always running good around this area. He was cool AF.. (I wish I would've gotten that interaction video)
There's no question the HR is the superior engine, stock and modified. The DE is still a very good engine, but definitely lacking in comparison. I've owned both.
One thing I never see discussed is the cam crossover at 4000-4200rpm in the HR. It's almost like a Vtec effect that hits and is followed by an increase in sound and power. I guess it's part of Nissan's 'Swell' they talk about when tuning the power delivery/powerband.
The HR and VHR will always be a better performance engine out the box and the DE will be the better financial option for your wallet in my opinion they all are fun without noting the obvious fact of performance differences.Alot of DE owners can say many cars have seen their tail lights I know I can. Real truth is a VR38DETT under your hood would be a mans best friend😎

Im thinking or fully rebuilding my DE, and i believe it has the potential to hang with the HR once all the internal components have been upgraded. Yes, the block is overall better in design for the HR, but like he said, it is cheaper and more available to get a DE rather than an HR. What's your opinion?
Simple, going ball to the wall power? The VR38 is better. You have the advance of greater displacement and you dont have to deal with direct inject which is more of a pain to tune and really don't offer any benefit at that level of power when everything else is upgraded(injects and fuel pump). When it comes to sipping fuel at moderate power levels then VR3DD
My hr has 270k burns practically no oil. If done every 5k miles. Imo it might be the top 5 v6. Coming from a mechanical integrity point of view. The performance on top makes it that much better. Alot of these bmws are burning oil with in 40k miles. P.s. i have overhauled well over a 100 engines in my career. And seen plenty models come and go
Arthur Wall My mom got the Q50 3.7 and I got my baby the G37 which I love it. The main difference that I experience is 3,500-rpm torque peak from Q50 is more preferable to the current 5,200 rpm.from the G37
The VQ35HR is one of my favorite V6's out there. I loved it in my 07 G35sport sedan when it debuted on the Infiniti side. Simple bolt ons and tune had it putting great power out while revving sewing machine smooth to the high 7k rpm range. Now, I have a built VQ35DE and I do enjoy the simplicity of things under the boosted setup. All in all, the VQ series family of engines are fun to roll around stock or build to suit your needs. Great video.
Hey man. I have the same car. Automatic 2007 g35xS awd sedan .. That bolt ons and tunes did you put? My car is gas guzzling and I would like to fix it up more. Any advice?
@@GhostOfBrickCity yes sir, first you want to make sure your spark plugs, injectors, mass airflow sensors, o2 sensors, and engine compression are good. 9 times out of 10 your car simply is guzzling gas because it isnt reading its own performance correctly. For modifications, I had the car when it first came out so mods were a little different than what is available now. Injen cold air intakes, fast intentions catback, technosquare reflash (😁), and briefly had test pipes.
@@Vortech.g35 I just bought the car 2 weeks ago. And cracked the bumper 20 minutes after leaving dealership. Fml.i know it has 2 DC cold air intakes. But other than that. Fuck it I'll do it.. But now it feels like the gas pedal got harder. It was idling fine. Now when I turn it on. It goes to almost 1700 then eventually idles down. Still haven't started the ("fresh new car maintenances) yet. Waiting for weekend to start changing oil, and gas treatments, and seafoam
Just reading out the engine specs doesn’t automaticly make a newer engine better. Although it is proven by many that DE and RevUp engines produce less HP than advertised by Nissan and HR kicks out more ponies, there is one tiny flaw which can end the life of an HR disastrously. It is called oil gallery (or galley) gaskets. They were made out of paper and were bound to fail. They blow out and oil pressure begins to drop. If these gaskets, deep inside the engine, are not replaced catastrophic failure can occur. It’s labour intensive and costly job. HR also has some very sensitive throttle bodies which can fail if moved/turned by hand while cleaning - or even fry ECU - resulting in buncy idle which is a PITA to fix. I am sure there’s many areas which can be a ground for debating which engine is the best. Either best on paper, for mods, street driving or cheapest to run. Nice video though but I was hoping for some hands on experience through ownership.
ScentofLaceration if you’re pushing 200k miles it was already done, probably. It is not something that would happen in an instant. So you shouldn’t be worried. People just ignore the low psi on the gauge. It is there for a reason. Nissan updated these gaskets years ago. Now they have metal in them and should be good for life time of the engine.
I hve 2 DE's an I personally think there better for maintenance and being hands on with! I jus sold one yesterday, but for arnd a 400HP JDM u can't go wrong with a DE! Varooom 🚗💨💨💨👏👌👍🤭
I have a mechanical question. I have a vq35de now code is shooting p01490 but only pending then p0447 all replaced? Do u think it could be the intake or is it actually open like a broken wire or ecm? Just now thinking of it cause what caused it was a stutter became then weak. Lol like it has no gas in it.
So a UK issue... To tax a DE I'd pay £395 for a year, the HR (simply because tax went up in mid 2006 in UK) wpuld cost £649. Can i justify ~£250 a year just for a little more power I wont get to use often?
Plenum spacer on my de made a notable bottom end torque bump and improved gas mileage at the same time. People say the hr burns oil I never have to top up on my de doesn't burn oil and it's at 100k kilometres
@@E46325mod I only use a dipstick to read my oil not a sensor didn't even know there was a sensor reading hasn't reported anything in the 2 years I had the car and dipstick always looks good
From what I have seen the power difference between the two is much larger than this. I have talked to a lot of people, dyno results Sean to be in between 230-255whp on a DE where an HR can hit the 300whp on a dyno all day. This is just what I have gathered from countless people at the drift track. I have a HR I am currently putting in my 240. The power difference alone was well worth the money spent but when you look at some of the other differences in the engineering the HR really is nothing short of a”built” motor capable of taking astonishing amounts of abuse. Granted I bought a totaled HR Z and parting the car out is basically paying for the cost of the motor anyways, no loss in getting the HR. The price difference between a drivable DE vs HR 350z can be insane though.

As I get older I appreciate cheaper and parts availability. I love to mod stuff so I'm leaning DE

There’s a bigger horse power than 6 for the HR vs the DE RevUp. The DE and DE RevUp did not get measured in the SAE standard but the HR and VHR were.
You can build a DE to take just as much HP reliably as a HR, the DE Is a way better platform and there’s more tunability for it which is why I’m sticking to this platform
Translation: I got stuck with a DE and now I'm coping with my loss
Thanks for sharing. I've got a 2008 base manual, I track it roughly once a month and live close to a very curvy mountain road out in the middle of nowhere. For the past 6 yrs I've beat the shit out of mine at least once a week on the mtn road and the past 2 yrs at the track.

Bought a rust and damage free stripped 2004 z and put it back together using a rolled 2008 z. The HR motor is a beast, way more rev happy and fun to drive than my previous 03 z that I sold. If you want to build the ultimate naturally aspirated car cheaply the HR is the way to go, HR block, heads and rods with a 3.7 crank and special 12.5:1 JWT pistons along with tomei 272 or 280 cams would be one sick street engine.
is it fairly easy to turbo the DE and HR engines?
Thanks for watching 👍
um you really think nissan made the hr in less than a year? no the HR was in the design years before hand

I had 35 anniversary Z. With Rev up. Great car. 7k redline. I should of kept my Z. The vq was a very reliable motor. Great weird sound.

Which one is better is really dependent on the use of the engine & budget.
The HR is more expensive to purchase and you will need a more advanced ECU to run the dual VVT.
Having said that, even though the DE is cheaper to purchase, what would it take to get the DE to make the "300HP" that the HR does?
NA: Cams, valve seats & compression bump (then you might have to look at alternative fuels)
Boosted: Lots of heat, complexity & cost.
I haven't run these numbers but it is likely that your $per HP is better spent on an HR.
Get the HR with a good ECU, beautiful sounding exhaust & then do a ridiculous burnout!
My Fuga 370 GT has 11:1 compression ratio. I've only had her a couple weeks and I love driving it so much.

I appreciate the DE always 🤞🏾

I have a great video of my HR sedan racing a 2003 6MT coupe. We were neck & neck at 120mph.... Pretty much neck & neck through the entire PowerBand. One thing I never see discussed is the cam crossover at 4000-4200rpm in the HR. It's almost like a Vtec effect that hits and is followed by an increase in sound and power. I guess it's part of Nissan's 'Swell' they talk about when tuning the power delivery/powerband.

Im thinking or fully rebuilding my DE, and i believe it has the potential to hang with the HR once all the internal components have been upgraded. De is for the stock and casual daily driver. Hr is for mods and more top end
HR / VHR no doubter , better power advantages , reliability at its finest , and also stock to stock a DE to HR , HR ftw
Do a VR30DDTT vs VR38DETT.

Does HR burn oil like DE?
HR obviously the best but after driving both I will take a low mile DE over a high mileage HR. The oil burn is nowhere near as bad as revups.
Damn really? So far I haven't noticed any drop in oil pressure but my HR is at 200k miles, knowing this worries me now. I daily my 07.

Just took a chance on an 08 G35x HR with 186k, it ran so strong i had to go with it. Amazing motor.
how many miles on the car now and how has it been?
There is no debate here HR owns the DE by simple virtue of not burning Oil, never mind the extra power and better internals.
De does use up oil like a mofo the oil sensor doesnt work on most of them you need to check your oil with a dipstick and make sure it is good.
@@E46325mod I only use a dipstick to read my oil not a sensor didn't even know there was a sensor reading hasn't reported anything in the 2 years I had the car and dipstick always looks good
DE REv-up with 6MT (2006) burned oil. the HR does not
From what I have seen the power difference between the two is much larger than this.
I know this is old but no stock hr is touching 300whp fbo tuned yes maybe from the factory is has 260-270 whp
