    I think what's even more depressing about justin's situation is that while half the internet hated his guts and did not treat him like a person, the other half also did not treat him and were super obssesive and stalkerish.
    Like it was extreme hate or extreme like and no in between. Justin had no refuge.

    • @homelessend8557
      @homelessend8557 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +75

      Exactly this^^ the reason why people even hated Justin was more specifically geared towards how overly famous he became and how some of his fans came off as overly protective (to outright stalkerish), so people "hated Bieber" to get a reaction out of them. Eventually, this trickled down to JB having minority groups of people that then didn't like him to fans that made modern BTS stans seem sane by comparison.

    The Bieber hate train can be explained largely in one sentence: Teenage boys and young adult men fraternized by dunking on things teenage girls like. That's just how we made friends back then.
    Teenage girls like Twilight? Dunk on Twilight and its gayass sparkling Mormon vampires.
    Teenage girls like Justin Bieber? Dunk on the pre-pubescent lily-white twerp unironically saying "shawty".

But it felt like the "switch" happened exactly when Justin released What Do You Mean. Just felt like after all that time that the Internet grew tired of hating his music due to him being so overexposed & popular. It especially was crazy since he was a KID! I wouldn't be allowed to be on the internet if i was in his shoes. Amazing for how he's grown up even after everything surrounding him. Even if the hate never "truly" died down with his music still getting critically bashed, at least it's not as bad as when he was first becoming popular.

      @Impalingthorn 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      I don't feel shame for it.
      Mind you I was not violent about it, but I hated him for two good reasons:
      1. He was absolutely everywhere. There was no avoiding him. Part of the reason the hate died down was because the media stopped trying to force normal people not part of the tweenage girl demographic to like him.
      2. I was... CONSTANTLY compared to him. I, at the time, was one year younger than him, had a bowl cut with longer hair and apparently a nice face. And I played guitar. Naturally with me being a teenager myself, I was constantly compared to him even though I was twice his size and could fold him like a chair.
      I don't consider the period weird in retrospect. People get flippantly aggressive literally anytime a single thing gets shoved in their face too much; Linkin Park, Undertale, Hearthstone, Rick and Morty, Fromsoft Games, you name it. Doesn't necessarily make something bad, but combine with the fact that most of us were literally going through adolescence at the time and every radio station, shop, and event was playing "Baby" and you have the recipe for a natural disaster.

    Your Jar Jar argument is superb, and it's frighteningly accurate. The bitter hatred for the two during their respective times was unbelievable, and it had a huge impact on internet culture and even just being a kid during that era. It seems like the hatred stems from being annoying to people outside of the target demographic. Jar Jar was for small children seeing Star Wars for the first time with the prequels, and Justin Bieber was for teenaged girls. Unfortunately, everyone outside of those demographics that were subjected to it just found it annoying. And that minor irritation grew, and festered, and boiled over online.

The Forces of Evil, three of the 80s biggest IPs made arguably one of the biggest comebacks. Those being Transformers, My Little Pony, and the Ninja Turtles.
      And because of the Transformers and TMNT ressurgance and MLP's rise in popular because of people like me and several other, it felt like nothing had changed since the 80s and early 90s. It'd be nice to go back to such simpler times.

    Canada has three most hated things: Justin Bieber, Caillou, and Canada during the winter. But next to One Direction and Twilight either women gush over them, or anyone else despise that kind of media. What made the reputation of Justin Bieber worse were his fans the 'Beliebers'; like I mentioned earlier with Simon Cowell's pyramid scheme 1D, those kind of girls begged to marry them despite the major age gap. Unlike One Direction's fanbase, Beliebers were just as bad as Blood On The Dance Floor's fanbase(to an already terrible artist as Dahvie Vanity molested minors and bullied Jessie Slaughter), and K-Pop fans/Sasaengs(the fans have also stalked these bands and caused the Jackass crew to move sets from South Korea to Japan for their own safety against the K-Pop Stans during Jackass Forever's production). One time, a troll guised as a Justin Bieber fan said the artist had and was struggling from cancer, and everyone took it for real. Until the fan was revealed to be nonexistent and only there for clout. Second, a Belieber decided to have anyone boycott the show Supernatural in order to confess their love for Bieber, thus backfired. Lastly, there was an incident where Beliebers encouraged themselves to engage in self-harm when Bieber transitioned to substance use. Talk about fucked up beyond belief! Besides, slitting your wrists is never the answer to your favorite pretty boy artist deciding to smoke a bong. On the other hand, Canada had an actually good artist associated with the industrial subgenre of music like Skinny Puppy, which I'm a fan of. Talent through nightmare fuel is key to SP whereas cringe through generic pop music is key to Justin Bieber. That's all I could bring up when talking musicians from 'Leafland', but I shit you not, Baby was so bad it scared off a bear before it could maul a hiker to death. His life was saved thanks to a godawful pop song from 2010!
    In addition, Rebecca Black was poked fun at by the entire internet back then, with her song Friday leading to constant ridicule from the masses. Hell, the music video to Friday was spoofed by the Annoying Orange with Fryday, and made into hilarious YTPs by Cartoonlover98 and Cs188! Just as hated as Bieber but reminder, it isn't Black's fault for why Friday turned out to be so shitty. She confirmed it, and her former career was handled by a douchebag producer(who's also a youtuber tbh).

      @@masterseal0418 That was from 2013 when I heard it from the news. I just found out today that the whole "Cut4Bieber" trend is nothing more than a hoax made by 4Chan to spread rumors about Beliebers cutting themselves as a response to stop Bieber from smoking weed. Considering that 4Chan is infamous for being held responsible for many controversies on the Internet over the years, I wouldn't be surprised that the hoax did succeeded, let alone news outlet caught their attention.
      The thing about Justin Bieber's car crash is a different story, but maybe because my memories are fuzzy to remember. Still, that "Cut4Bieber" part is disturbing and it's a reminder that obsession over someone else, especially if they are an idol, can be unhealthy.

He is more or less the definition of the end of an era. He was made fun of for looking like a girl though he was like 14, people made jokes about his sexuality. They made jokes about a bunch of things. Things that were like "yeah, that's playground talk" in the 90s. Ever since people stopped making fun of him, the world was never the same anymore. That was never accepted as playground our water cooler talk again. People started getting cancelled online for still talking like the way they talked about him.
