  • In this analysis episode I go over Twin Peaks’ season 2 and season 3 finale.
I’ll cover the similarities and what it would mean for Dale Cooper’s future. Could there be a good and happy conclusion for Cooper? What does it all mean anyway?

If David Lynch continues Twin Peaks, I'd love it. But, ONLY if he's at the helm, not if anyone else tries to take the show over. David Lynch is simply unique and I don't think anyone else can do what he does.

It's all about the tragedy of Laura's death, at least to me. There is nothing anyone can do, even with having access to versions of heaven, hell, and mutliple realities. It's meant to underscore the incredible impact of loss, with Cooper representing those who are left behind, trying to find a way to undo reality, but always failing to find a solution, beacause it can't be had. But all theories are valid, and that's why I love Lynch. This end is meant to be final. It's the ultimate gut punch.

Season 3 has the most shoking and perfect ending I could ever imagine... But is there room for a continuity! Of course there is! In fact... I know in my bones that this is not the end of Twin Peaks yet...just has I knew back in the nineties that this was not over yet... I don't know if it will be in the form of a season 4, Mini serie, TV movie or theather film, but I know in my bones that there wil be something else, When? in a year? 5 or 10? that I don't know, and directed by who? don't know either, but there wil be something else... love your vids by the way!

Yan S. I'm not expecting anything soon, but it would surprise me if in the next 5-10 years there still has been any development of a new season.
This season apparently took about 4 years to make, so given this one has just ended, my guess is that we may hear about a new season in 6 years

I absolutely love this episode of your Twin Peaks thoughts.
As for the continuation - there are many loose ends, the question is, which plot to follow! I would gladly follow Hawk (from the book we know he inherited the log, but it haven't spoken to him yet) and he has still one more page of Laura's diary to find. He is a strong presence in Twin Peaks and seems to know a lot about Judy andbeliefs connected to the White and Black Lodge. I also think he would make a good mentor to any future FBI agents following Blue Rose cases. Wouldn't it be great?

    • @OldTinMan
      @OldTinMan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you and you make an excellent point!
It seems there are more loose ends then there was compared to the last cliff hanger. If there were to be a continuation, I'll be all for Hawk being the protagonist! His character is so well developed up to this point. He is the reason Dale was able to further understand the Lodges in the first place.
It would be great to see a continuation to some more Blue Rose cases, great idea. I would love to even see more Sam Stanley, even if he is apparently a raging alcoholic. Gotta love Sutherland.

Have another Twin Peaks analysis for you guys, right when you thought people weren’t making those anymore. It’s been a year since the release of Twin Peaks: The Return and I need to go over that finale once again. What do you guys make out of Dale’s RETURN (a coincidence? I think not) to a tragic end? Is there potential in a continuation with his storyline?

Gotta light OTM ? Well you've just brought some : I hadn't set those similarities that clearly - thanks ! I can't imagine any continuation I must say. To me Dale is a tragic hero as he is the sacrifice character whose duty and fate is to save Laura in any world (so, correction a loop and a loop and a loop could be a continuation indeed). Or, because he managed to save her in reality, he is doomed to fail in another place. Btw, the music you chose... perfect !

      Drink full, and descend.
Hah, I'm glad you liked it! I completely agree with you there Ben. Dale is the tragic hero that might simply be forced in that passage by Lynch himself (nice guy). And overall, I think Dale himself could be happy with his results, even if he never uncovers what truly happened. If it is true that Laura is saved in any dimension, what would happen if Twin Peaks does continue? Would we see a breathing Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks?
I had to pick the perfect music for this video!

At this moment he gives Janey E and her son a tulpa if Dale Cooper went n live with them instead of his tulpa he would of chose love over darkness n would of given Cooper a happy ending unfortunately Cooper can't love others cuz he can't forgive themself so he goes off on a hero journey to save Laura if he just stayed with Janey E he would of had a happy ending n everything would of been okay.

No need for another ending, this one did have a satisfying conclusion, from my perspective. I think the show makes it clear that, this time, Dale succeeds, eventually. He somehow learns to ascend time and space. I know I know, that sounds weird, but its what he says! See how his face is superimposed on the entire space of the frame? Then he talks about time? I think this makes the most sense. He basically becomes a fireman type, like Phillip Jeffries or the Fireman...

Na, Frost and Lynch need to team up and really sew their ideas together. There is a lot of incoherence in the unbridled Lynch, which I love, but Frost paints a detailed picture - more of a map. I was saddened to learn that they had little collaboration with one another in the creation of season 3: the Books were all Frost, screen was all Lynch. I dunno, the books were just a lot more accessible in tying shit together, whereas it seemed Lynch just went off in an entirely different direction with the series that disrupted Frost's attempt at cohesion. Help, please for the love of God, I don't understand season 3 at all!

If you knew Lynch, you would be aware of the fact that while you're watching Lynch, you don't have to think, or try to make some kind of connections between the scenes, but to enjoy and living the experience. Despite all that, if you watch more carefully, you'll see that there's a logic...

    • @OldTinMan

I think of it as season 3 as Lynch's perspective of the series, since he directed the entirety of it. But you also gotta look at the writing aspect of the season as well, which was by both Lynch and Frost.
Season 1 had a series of directors, including Lynch, which become somewhat of a quilt of Lynch's and Frost's vision.

People have also speculated that the final episode location for season 3 is our reality. If you want to do a meta on it, they could be linked as Dale Cooper is our (the viewers) lab rat in a sense. We watch the show creators put him through these various mazes. We might see a resolution for Cooper in the future, but only if it comes to Lynch in a dream! I think he's waiting for that sign of where to go with him. Cooper is a very important character for Lynch, and he won't take it lightly whatever his decision.

That's the thing. Lynch allowed us to use our imaginations to determine finality or not. We don't know if Carrie/Laura's scream killed them or ended anything. The house goes dark and the scene goes black. Could be that Cooper was successful in getting Carrie/Laura (Carrie could be a Tulpa like Diane, who is aware of the hosts thoughts and memories) to remember and confront Judy and that appears to have happened. Cooper prevented his Bob-infested Doppelganger from ever getting to Sarah/Judy and accomplished his mission of getting Laura "home". Whether the plan was successful is anybody's guess and maybe even Lynch never closed the chapter in his own mind. That's the beauty of his work. It's unsettling and does not wrap the series in a nice, conclusive bow.

I would argue that the ending of season 3 was abrupt however it was not a cliffhanger. And it's also my understanding that agent Cooper's mission was a success. I think what he and Diane did in the motel room was a way to summon Judy so that Cooper could enter her dream where she was hiding Laura Palmer. I think what he was trying to do was getting Laura Palmer to remember who she was. At the end just before Cooper asks what year is this the same sound that The Giant / Fireman told Cooper to listen to in the first episode can be faintly heard. I believe this sound triggered something in Cooper making him aware that Judy had tricked him. What year is this was the one thing Cooper needed to say to remind Laura that she was Laura. It was a sudden save. It felt to me like a nightmare that's so bad your mind eventually tells you that you're dreaming. Cooper asked the question prompting Laura to remember who she was as represented by Sarah Palmer calling her name. Laura then screams in an acknowledgement of who she is which is what kills Judy as represented by the lights going out in the house. I believe the lights going out in the rest of the world represented the dream ending.

Very interesting. I agree with you, though I've never read or watched a theory well-elaborated like yours (and believe me, I searched for maaaaany since I watched the finale 1 year ago!); the thing that is new in your theory for me is that it was a Judy's dream, and it goes well with the whole episode... What I myself conjectured was that it was like a cage, a dimension-cage, if you will, where somehow the Giant managed to trap Judy into, and in which it'd be the only way to get rid of her since in our world she would be an immortal entity just like Bob, even more powerful obviously. And what I found is that, yea, Cooper and Laura did it, but the price was Coopers life since that universe was shut down.

    • @Brandon_Powell
      @Brandon_Powell 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't think there's any need for a 4th season, but then I was skeptical about the 3d and was pleasantly surprised. But even if there were a need, too many actors are dead. Lynch has gotten all the mileage out of long-departed Frank Silva and Don Davis he can, and now Miguel Ferrer is gone as well. Hard to imagine TP without Albert. I hope David Lynch doesn’t wait too long for us to get more of Agent Cooper. There’s so much more there to build on around this main character taking it back into Twin Peaks darker secrets. In response to your question at the end, yes I do think there is potential for the series to continue. But I think a more pertinent question would be, simply, should it? And to that, no, I really don't think it should.
No matter what, due to how the series ended and how they solved Laura's murder, a mystery that was never meant to be solved, it would always end like this and will continue to. At a cliffhanger, at what many would consider a "pointless" crusade. Lynch will always see to it that Twin Peaks will never have a finite "happy" ending.
I feel this revival was a very special, once in a life time event that can never be repeated. How many other works of fiction so eloquently predicted that in 25 years we would return once again?

Twin Peaks is a dreamworld. I feel this was made clear throughout the series and maybe even piled on a little too thick in Te the Return. It is the dreamworld of an abused, molested, drug addicted, teenage prostitute. In this dreamworld there is a clear explanation for the source of evil and a way to defeat it. And there is a literally too good to be true white knight FBI agent who will stop at nothing to defeat it and save her. Human beings have always dreamt up explanations for evil(The Devil, original sin, etc) because it is easier and more comforting than to face the horrors that exist within us.
I view part 18 of The Return as the dreamworld collapsing culminating with "What year is this?" We then hear Sarah Palmer's voice call out for Laura just like in the first episode. The final scream is Laura waking up and returning to a f*cked up life where the evil that exists in her reality can not be explained and no one is coming to save her.
    Laura is the one.
    Laura is the dreamer.
So needless to say I think Twin Peaks is complete. Lynch could still go back in the dreamworld but I have a feeling that this was meant to be the definitive end. And if the show ever continues without DL that would be a near tragedy. But we'll see.

I would like a happy ending. I would love a fourth season. However, even if there is no resolution and there are no further episodes, I will be forever thankful for this season three. I cannot explain why but it left me with a beautiful wistfulness that has stayed with me. Even thinking about the series or hearing the music brings up emotions that I still do not understand. This is why Lynch is a master.
Could there be more? I believe Lynch has created an incredible world(s) and amazing characters. More things could always happen. Will there be more? I don’t know. But I tell you this. I don’t want more until when and if Lynch is truly inspired, which may take 25 more years. Years, which he may not have left. I guess we will have to see.

      Then Part 18 came along.

The third season tells us several times that we live in a dream and it asks who the dreamer is. Many events are dreamlike and impossible on earth, like the magic Freddie fist and the tulpas. Kyle's face is watching events as if he is the dreamer. Put that all together and you get that one of Kyle's four characters is the dreamer. The only one that makes any sense to me is Richard. There is always room for another season, but if my guess is correct and Richard is the dreamer, I don't know where you would take a fourth season. But a creative mind can figure something to do with a fourth season. Maybe it focuses on Richard and Linda. That would be a change.

So to watch Twin Peaks: The Return, you would need Showtime. Thankfully there are many services that offer a free trial for Showtime. Most of them for 7 days, but If you have Hulu, 30 days. I’ll leave the link below for you to take a look at all those services that offer free trials!

Try your public library. The three largest parishes (counties) in the New Orleans area all have it in their library systems. The smaller systems don't seem to have it.
It's worth remembering for other TV series & movies if you've already seen it. Most public libraries also give you access to Hoopla and/or Kanopy streaming.

Of course it wasn't closure. All these wildly contradicting speculations underscore that. How can it be closure if we don't even know what happened? That's the opposite of closure. And I'm not one who's ever been impressed by "ambiguous" endings. They're copouts. Fans don't need Lynch's help to imagine their own stories. If he has a story to tell then he should tell it. The line of thinking otherwise basically reduces the series from a story to a loosely connected set of writing prompts. I have my own ideas about how season 4 should unfold and I seen no reason for it to end with S3.

The story wants to be told, and it will find a way to make that happen. Lynch understands that.
I am 100% sure there will be another season announced when Showtime and Lynch make a deal. Comic-Con would be one possible place for an announcement. Showtime would not be spending millions of dollars on publicity for Twin Peaks if it thought the show was done.
Coop is on the Hero's Quest. He overreached when he prevented Laura from being killed and things did not go according to plan. However, I trust that Coop will figure out a way of his current situation. We just all experienced a huge cliffhanger,

If this theory is correct (and it think it is a reasonable conclusion that it is) then did we need 18 hours to get there? And then how much of the non-Cooper stuff really mattered then?

  • @nancykillsyou

Of course, Cooper is still in the Red Room. We never saw an “ending” just another restarting point. It happened in the sheriffs station when everything went black after death of Bob/Mr.C./kissing Diane. Twin Peaks could ALWAYS continue in “alternate timelines” as long as Cooper continues to try and “save” Laura, or meddle with the past. Also, Lynch went on record talking about the mystery of Laura’s missing diary page. So that’s a good sign...

    • @OldTinMan
      @OldTinMan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Great point! We could see Dale on a endless journey. Perhaps as an eternal imprisonment, where he is challenged to escape.
Thank god Lynch is still discussing that mystery!

  • @xyttra

Remember season 1 finale and the first episode of season 2. Cooper gets shot and we see him on the floor in the first episode of season 2. Cooper asks the Giant, where do you come from but the Giant corrects him by saying, "where have you gone". Also the second season Cooper is gloomier than in first season. I would argue that Cooper lives through the same thing, again and again and again. Dying and being reborn, each time darker than before. Could his dark side gaining more and more ground in his psyche?

I really don't see any of these notions of parallel dimensions and timelines as relevant. For me, Lynch is joking and juggling with the idea of a TV series, audience expectations and episode logic and continuity, not making a sci-fi mystery series.

Unfortunately, season 3 didn't do it for me. Aside from some great moments, reminiscent of the old series, season 3 was very forced and weird for the sake of weird.
All the naturalness inherent in season 1 and 2 was gone, the connection to nature and owls were gone and everything then turned artificial (man made electricity and nuclear bombs). Though one can argue that this was intended I believe Lynch made a huge mistake by not bridging the gap between nature and artificiality.
But the greatest sin of Lynch was that he hugely departed from the town of Twin Peaks (nature) and decided to jump to different locations.
All in all, a huge letdown.

Life isn't satisfying in it's endings. Why should art not ever reflect this. History repeats, life patterns repeat, never ending, never satisfying. So many lives, have ended in a loop. Why not reflect this in art? Lynch shows this side of mankind in his art. The banality, the futility in a high percentage of what people have always done, will always do. Yet with the promise and hope, that sometimes, something truly spectacular happens. It's's not the rule, but the exception. It's certainly not promised and shouldn't be taken for granted.

  • @WrestlingErnestHemingway

It could but it probably won't because either David Lynch got so caught up in not knowing what he was doing or story he was telling, I don't see him making everything come together when he actually really could if he wanted to. Instead he wants viewers to have their own conclusions. YAWN imo. If anyone could come up with some logic (or make some logic to it all for a real "story's" sake) it's probably David Frost that could end it all with a solid conclusion and put it all together better than Lynch could. David Lynch just wants to be artsy and it's annoying when there is no answers to anything in his story telling. Especially frustrating when Lynch makes everything so compelling & interesting. To have no set conclusion or answers is imo a cop out and cheap of him to do.
I think the most overlooked episode of this entire series was the Nuclear bomb explosion episode. Imo this showed a ALIEN interference in trying to stop the bomb from existing. Or trying to change the human events that lead up to the development of the nuclear bomb. Aliens created "doppelgangers" to try and stop the making of the nuclear bomb. This says a lot about the disappearance of Phillip Jeffries, General Hammond and why he was abducted. Along with vanishing of Agent Desmond and others. I don't think "The Red Room" was a product of "The Lodge". The Red Room WAS an alien spacecraft or it's visionary room to station all the players the Alien race needed to try and reverse history. Thus, the alien race USED Laura's mother & father as distractions so the alien race could try and change history. Thus what we watch is the alternate reality. The alien race can create an illusionary "space & time" changes into reality to purposely insert the doppelgangers they needed. The entire series from beginning the ending is the alien race trying to correct everything using different alternate realities. Thus in the nuclear bomb explosion episode you see the bug go into Laura's mom. Thus leaving Laura's father the VICTIM of marrying an alien species, Laura being a half alien, and BOB being inserted to stop Laura's father from exposing anything. Thus, the aliens have taken Phillip Jeffries, Hammond Cooper, Chet Desmond & Dale Cooper and captured them all into their realm (space ship red room whatever) because these are the kind of people won't ever stop to finding out what his going on. All the goings on is all the bad events after the nuclear bomb went off in testing sites and following it's use in Hiroshima. The DECLINE of the World in general. This is all we are seeing while watching all the bad things happen. It isn't the white picket fences & great time in the past that it use to be. The Alien race tried to stop it or alter it, but they haven't succeeded. YET. This is why I loved the ending. The GOOD but half Mr. C BAD ASS COOPER we end up with. In an alternate reality only Cooper & Laura exist in because the past does not exist anymore. The aliens don't want to kill them so they put them in a different dimension basically. Anyways, this Alien race trying to stop the development of the nuclear bomb theory of mine explains a lot for myself. This alien theory comes into play on the nuclear explosion episode completely.
