- Welcome to Part 3 of our AntsVienna ANT EXPERIMENT! This is an ant video that focuses mainly on the scientific and educational side of Ant Keeping.
1 Year ago I collected 🐜🐜🐜 13 Queen Ants and placed them all in a single Ant Farm!
While Lasius Flavus are generally a gentle and easy going ant species, you won't believe what happened over the course of this experiment!

i love all of your videos i was expecting all the queens to die
i expected 5 to live. honestly it was a suprise. I live in Poland so i just caught my Lasius Flavus queens. i can't wait for more videos on them. in fact before i started waching your channel (abt half a year ago) i thought L. Flavus were very boring and in every single way mid. this series made me realise the truth. i absolutely love your videos. Keep it up.
Still love the way the flavus workers look, they are so docile and cute
Oli queens live seperated from each other, but within the same colony
poly colonies don't always inbreed 😅 they just allow multiple queens together
Yes keep this colony for future updates
Thanks for the input! Yes, I had Tetramorium Bicarinatum in mind when I was talking about poly 😅😂
Please keep them and give us updates! I'm excited to see how this colony develops!
Thanks for the feedback! I did a poll during the livestream and 95% voted to keep them and continue with the updates - So this is what I'm going to do :)
@@AntsVienna Who didn’t want it to continue? It should have been 100 percent!
You should have to keep them and give us updates!
Thanks! Will do so👍
The hype is strong with this one
Yep! Thank you all for joining me live - and those who watch it later❤
Sind auch viele😅
I can't wait for this video! My fav experiment AntsVienna done! To this day i watch the old parts of this video!
Hello Gabor! Glad you like the first parts - now get ready for Part 3 😉🐜
just found your videos and am really impressed you remind me of the AntsCanada channel which i have loved watching and now i have yours too so keep up the good work
Hello Paul! Thank you for the support! Got a few videos in the making currently - stay tuned😉
I'm so excited for this video! I think I will rewatch the other ant experiment videos first and then come back to watch this one! Can you also show the feeding process in future videos? I love seeing them discover the food and watch how they decide to handle different various sizes of food.
Hello Katarina! Of course I can show more on the feeding :)
Lasius Flavus are big honey-water lovers and ignore most other food in fact... It is rare for (my colony at least) to eat anything else. Mealworm being an exception, when they have a lot of larva to feed.
Definitely keep them and keep updating us! I love your videos & experiments.
Thanks for the support! Will keep you guys updated on the colony😄🐜
Yesss I've been waiting for this one!
Many people have! The waiting will be over soon😉
You should keep them as you wish. It was an amazing experiment from start to finish.
Thanks for the feedback! Many argue that the experiment is not finished yet... So I will keep them, since I've also grown to like them a lot. :)
I can’t wait😄
Less than 24h ... soon the wait will be over 😉
i love lasius flavus and they are definitely my favourite ant species and my flavus colony has just recently begun to explode in population from around 11 workers to like 120+ in a few months and on october 30th they will be going into hibernation
Sounds perfect! Keep it up👍
i just got 7 lasius flavus queens in 1 test tube so thats made me even more interested in this experiment
The results you are going to be interesting ...to say the least
This was really really interesting. Thanks for putting in the effort on every video you make.
Glad ou like it :) More than 200 hours went into this one over the course of 1 year
There were some mistakes. For example not every polygynous ant can inbreed. You can count the species which can on one hand.
Thanks for pointing out! I tried to explain everything as sin´mple as possible for most people
@@AntsVienna
For future the most common species that can inbreed are black crazy ants but also Pheidole indica and pharaoh ants
Tetramorium Bicarinatum (in the background of explanation) also do 😉
@@AntsViennapheidole megacephala can inbreed too if I remember correctly
I love the intro and everything you go over love you man ❤️
Thanks! Glad you like my work :)
This channel NEEDS to be more popular
Thank you very much! Then just like and share the videos you like😃
Hope you uploaded more videos like this 😊
Since you guys liked it a lot - i will! 👍
Startet the same experiment yesterday but with six queen ants of cautolasius flavus
I'm curious what your results are going to be... You have to tell me and where your Flavus originate from
your intro is like ants canada😂
Really? This is my old intro from like 2018😂
I love this experiment and it's so interesting!
Glad you do. Are you interested in Lasius Flavus particularly or generally a fan of ant science? :)
I’ve been looking forward to this video, finally it’s here! An amazing experiment with a surprising but lovely outcome (at least for most of the participants lol). I did expect most queens to die.
Unluckily for me, I just ordered something from esthetic ants - without your promo code :(
Well. There’s another time.
Glad you like the experiment so far. Make sure you check my videos regularly - sometimes I even get promo codes with 20% or even 30% from EA, that only apply for a limited time
I cant wait until my 2 lasius flavus queejs arrive next week, only with brood. I am planning to keep them seperated.
Keeping them separated is the safe option - I always recommend that if you can't stand losing a Queen
I took inspiration from this experiment and put somewhere between 15 and 25 queens in a esthetic ants mesh nest.
What type of Queen ants? Keep me updated!
@@AntsVienna lasius flavus

Alle LASIUS Arten sind toll und easy going .
Nice video
Das stimmt 😊 Aber Lasius Flavus sind nochmal gechillter als z.B. Lasius Emarginatus (die rennen sofort darauf los)
Can‘t wait 👍🏻
Get ready!
Cool.........
🤩🤩🤩
Ok, I see you like that experiment :)
Amazing video. What editing software do you use?
Hello there. I use "Davinci Resolve" for my editing
@@AntsVienna Ok, because I love how the videos turned out with it!
awesome i am keeping queen ants together as well same species things going well
Hello there. Cool - may i ask what ant species you are doing this with?
Yea, here in the Netherlands I put two queens together and one of them is now dead!
Thank u
Stay tuned 😉
Hi man super vídeo again I just have a quick question until when your promo code is available?
Hello there. The promo code should be working as long as esthetic ants doesn't change too much on his website. If he does so, I will post an updated promo code in the description - so you guys can always get better prices for watching my videos. 😉
It’s nice to see the old intro again.
Yes, I went with it out of nostalgia :)
Definitely keep the colony with updates
Thanks - will do :)
Eine von 14 hat überlebt ???
Herzlichen Glühwein 😂
Nein, in dem video waren es 7. Update kommt bald!
Of course you need to keep them AND keep us informed of the evolution of this colony, 1 year is still the beginning of the aventure 👌
Thanks for the feedback - will keep you updated :)
You never dissapoint
Glad to have had you live🎉
Continue to give regular updates please i love it! Also I have another experiment I want you to try. What if you take monygynous species like tetramorium immigrans (thats what my only queen is so thats why i said that) and you put them in separate chambers with the hole small enough so the queen cant get out but big enough that workers can. then make it so they all have the same formicarium or something. maybe swap the eggs and larvae and pupae around so the workers are raised by a queen that isnt theirs to make them accept other queens (i dont know if that will work). im curious. the queens will never meet, but will the workers care?
Hello there! Yes, I have seen something similar been done with Camponotus Ligniperda ants. Of course our experiments are not over yet - so I might try your suggestion as well! Thanks for sharing👍
please send a link@@AntsVienna
Keep them. I had 7 in my head before u said it. Lol 😂
Will keep them - Nice guess👍
I'm so excited
Maybe you'll be even more excited if I tell you that it will be a 20min+ video? 😉🐜
honestly idk how u get them to explore all my flavus colonys just hide at the end of the tube even though they have 30-40 workers
Yes, Flavus are pretty docile. I guess this colony is so big that they NEED to be looking for food constantly and that triggers their "exploration"
love the ants but if you could tell me how to get a lasius flavus
Lasius Flavus Queens usually fly/mate from July-August and can often be found in grassy gardens
I did this experiment accidentally i catched some queen ant at their nuptial flight and placed them together and i completely forgot about it untill many of them laid eggs i dont know it poly or mono i wish i had a massive colony of this😊
haha - cool! Wish you the best with your colony🐜👍
My question is how did you collected the queens?
Hello Vojtech! Do you need help in finding Queens or in actually catching them?
Here is how to look for Queen ants: th-cam.com/video/sDD37CgENFQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AntsVienna
Here is how to catch Queens if you have already found them: th-cam.com/video/1cryYbdg-s8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AntsVienna
how can you see the eggs and ants soo good i can barly see mine
The setup and the camera magnification make it easier than naked eye
Mabey you should do a how to make a natrulistic terariem
Hello there. Already got a naturalistic build - do you wish for a simpler one? th-cam.com/video/l4vtn2Pbl5Q/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AntsVienna
release them i guess. i feel like its better to release them as you have many colonies to care for and having a polygenus species maybe high maintenance in the future.
That is a good point. For now I can handle them. But if they get out of hand i can still release them in the future
@@AntsVienna OMG U REPLIED ME😄😄😄
I'll just save people a lot of time - out of 13 starter queens, 7 survived and live together seemingly well
Ok, I'll let that slide just this once - since over 12k people did already take the time to watch it trough😜
Just to clarify, polygyny does not mean inbreeding. The adoption part is true in most cases but the inbreeding is only present in few species
and it doesn't mean the colony will exist forever
Hello there. Both facts true - I didn't mention that due to time constraints. Thanks for bringing it up 👍
Hi from Greece. I have a question. What is the difference between a tetramorium and a Lasius queen? .In addition I want to mention that your videos are very helpful .Keep it up my friend!!
Geia sou! Glad my videos are helpful to you. It depends on what exact Lasius and Tetramorium we are talking about. Generally speaking tetramorium are slightly smaller ants and are worse climbers than Lasius. Most Lasius species have better (farther) vision than Tetra, which means they act faster because they see you from further away. On the other side Tetra can grow very large numbers and are not afraid to take on much bigger insect than themselves - especially Tetramorium bicarinatum for example. That being said there is also the opposite side of the coin for Lasius: Lasius Flavus normally live underground and have little to no vision at all and orientate themselves in space by their sence of smell, thus contradicting the Lasius image I spoke of before.
So, the short answer is: It depends on the exact species... Hibernation period may also differ for example.
Hope this helps you out! Here are some ant guides on most of the ant species I keep for reference: th-cam.com/video/JnrsDL5z0hQ/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AntsVienna

Also Lasius Flavus?
@@AntsVienna yep indeed
Hi. Yesterday I caught some queen. I searched on Google and it said it is camponothus japonicus. Do you think it is normal to caught this species in Europe -Czech republic
Hello there. No, I don't think japonicus is accurate for CZ Rep - I suggest you rather check if they are Camp. Vagus or Fallax, depending on size. Hope this helps you out!
Thanks for your reply. It was Vagus
Glad I could help :)
Please keep them and have updates
Glad to hear that this is your wish 👍
Please keep them and update
Maybe try to give them a choice of nest aka natural in a larger outworks as LF tend to spend most time underground milking root aphids and hunting small insects that reside below ground ❤
Hello there. Will keep them. Thanks for the suggestion👍
Hello, what happened to your 2Q C. nicobarensis colony?
Hello there. That video is still in the works, you 'll get an update soon😉
@@AntsVienna Ok 👍Also do you think something is wrong with my C. nicobarensis colony when i feed them regularly and the workers are full but the queens have small abdomens
I have noticed that with my colony as well, but so far at least one Queen that I see often seems fine.
BUT you are right: It is quite different from other species, where the queens get overfed and higly physiogastric (swallen abdomen)
@@AntsVienna Yeah
👍
For all of you that have been waiting for this😉🐜
You should definitely keep monitoring them, this is unfortunately still not enough to prove that they're polygynous, either way releasing them into the wild would probably kill them as small colonies from captivity can't really adapt to the harsh new environment :/
Yes, the "highly scientific" was of course self-sarcasm, as a single try (or two, with control colony) won`t be enough to call it scientific evidence. BUT nontheless it does prove a point about my particular local variant.
So, yes - will keep monitoring them :)
@@AntsVienna Yeah you'd need to conduct multiple experiments :)
Lasius flavus is crazy though, in the north of Europe, mainly Scandinavia they're not only polygynous but also polymorphic and polydomous
Keep posting plsssss
Will do so! This experiment has awoken a lot of interest in the community :)
make sponge bob partick and squidwards house but make patricks house the nest

KEEP THEM!!! WE NEED TO KNOW MORE!!!!!
Thanks for the feedback! Will keep them👍
i think that 4 are left
good try... guess again! PS: Update video coming soon😉
How many ant workers are in the colony after one year?
Hard to tell, I'd say that there are approximately 150+ workers along with at least double that in brood inside that formicarium at the moment
Funny enough the control colony with "only" 5 queens isn't that far behind. Seems that the "chemistry" between the queens as well as the workers plays a significant role on how fast the colony grows... Even more so than the actual number of queens
