Ants almost never carve their nest into fresh wood. Its really hard, and it takes long. I suggest trying rotten or at least a very soft type of wood, they like that. If you put wood in water for a long time (idk how long) it will be soft.
This like a wood mince though that was just pressed into being a tube? Should be fairly soft, but I wonder whether it smells with whatever was the binder
Soaking the wood and putting it through several freeze/thaw cycles could soften it up too. When the water in the wood freezes it expands the fibers a little. Let it thaw, soak it again, then freeze it again.

I’m so glad to see this. I got worried when your posting was a bit late since you seldom are. I’ve followed you since about midway into the 1st mites with the Golden Empire. Love your story development, incredible editing, love for your subject. Thanks for the ant tales!
Ants Canada, I would like to say u have truly inspired me. I house ants now, and I am now writing a children’s book series about ants. It is about a single normal worker ant, who soon goes on an amazing journey outside the ant hill. Thank you for uploading and documenting these ants 😁
Hey as an exterminator who has to deal with carpenter ants quite a lot I could suggest an alternative to wood. Most species seem to favor insulation foam board as it is easy to dig but very structurally strong for them. It also cleans easily :)
I have a suggestion maybe you should try using cork. It’s very soft and pliable especially after being slightly moistened. Btw loved the video and haven’t watched in awhile so I was very happy to see your still making great content.
Hey! I have some information regarding the lack of digging into the wood, Ive Carpenter Ants before, one colony for several years. I performed a few experiments, and found that Carpenter Ants prefer wood that is Moist, as dry wood, is difficult for them to burrow into. To clarify, they are perfectly capable, the difference being, moist wood has more "give" its easier to pull apart and work with, and a nest can be much more rapidly dug and developed, much more ideal , and minimizes the time the ants need to spend away from home to dig, especially a colony so young, while there's a considerable amount of workers, the ants may choose not to take the risk, and seek out soft, moist wood, as dry wood, has almost no "give" and takes the ants much longer to burrow into, which isn't ideal in the wild. They may very well burrow into this wood, but likely as a last resort, and will take them much longer to terraform to their liking Perhaps a softer and/or Dampened wood would trigger the burrowing, from here they generally do move into harder wood to better protect the colony I hope this helps! Edit: REALLY bad spelling lol
The colony 1 tower should be called Isenguard, and the colony 7 tower should be called Barad-dur. Note: this is a reference to lord of the rings: the two towers. I immediately thought of this when he showed us the second tower
It would be awesome to have 2 carved fence posts in cylinders to keep the twin towers theme. Carve the tops of the towers and let the ants do the rest.
I'm new here. And I'm loving this drama. While I love Colony 8, it's going to be Colony 7 that I wil root for. I think so, for now anyway. As soon as I saw the 2 red farms together, I thought of the Two Towers. I am excited to see more.
I had a really good interaction with an ant once... it craned its head a bit, so I bopped it on the antenna gently. It fully extended its antennae and moved back a bit, before "tactically retreating" to its larger fellow workers and bringing them over. Ah, a younger sibling grabbing its older siblings to get a stranger... so adorable. They all proceeded to check and make sure I was not dangerous, and upon clearing my inspection, they allowed me to feed them with a little bit of jelly. I guess I'm a worker now as well, eh? I always bring a little jelly now daily to feed my ant buds... God damn ants and their being so damn cute...
13:17 Take a walk into the forest to look for a fallen tree that has not been colonized, but shows some sign of early fungal growth, the wood would be softer, i dont remember hearing to much about fresh wood colonization untill fungus takes hold.
While I don't have a suggestion for colony names, I do hope that we regard these two as twin-kingdoms as their lore develops. Its the first time we've established two colonies at the same time, and they deserve a little something extra.
Mirkwood and Lothlorien, the two famous elven woods from Lord of the Rings, with the ants of Mirkwood having Tauriel as their queen and being called the Sindar Army (The Elf that Legolas had a thing for in the Hobbit Movies) and Lothlorien having Galadriel as their queen and being called the Silvan Army.
I feel like Colony Seven would be Mirkwood due to their original divergence from the Sindarin. (Seven being a different species of ant.) For those that don't know: they originally developed a language that was so different it was barely intelligible to the Sindar and Noldor, though by the Third Age is was almost forgotten. Along with their symbiosis with the Avari, a group of elves that-by elven standards-could pretty much be considered savage due to them never making the journey across the sea.
Colony#7: Red 7’s or Red Diamond Dynasty (because they are diamonds in the rough, special) Colony#1: The Purple Pursuits or The Royal Cuts This matchup reminds me of the Seventh day Sabbath verse The first day Sunday.....hmm! This is nice! Look forward to the next video!
I see a lot of other people have said what I immediately thought as well; I think you may want to consider dampening the wood for the ants, see if that helps them burrow. I do also agree that it is probably a little early for them to leave.
I'm really happy that the winning colony was #1. Since they seem the strongest, this new type of outworld will be given its best chance with a strong healthy group of ants.
Hey, I’ve used Vaseline to keep ants from coming inside our house through our bases and windows. And i only used thin layers of vaseline & or petroleum jelly around the edges. You should try slapping some on the top of the rim if the tank so that next time you want to keep the ants inside the tank!
I hate and love ants at the same time the hate part is because a fire ant colony keeps making a nest where we get out of the house and the loving part is watching this channel
10 months late but I have an idea for if you ever do the cross colony into super colony experiment again, instead of letting them just wander out of the tube into a larger common area, introduce each one to your housing units (I forgot what they're called) to each colony with food, then tie those housing units to the common area so each of the colonies can gain the confidence to actually go out, and have space to grow appropriately, as well as add the buffer incase an ant of a different colony goes into the wrong hole again (giggity)
Personal opinion of the names playing off each other. Some have suggested Yin and Yang, others Mirkwood and Lothlorien. Probably not original, but I like the idea of them being called The Seelie and Unseelie Courts, with Queen Titania and the Queen of Air and Darkness (or Queen Mab, depending on the story)
I saw very good names, the ones I liked the most “The Pine Architects” for colony 1, credit to: Dr Max Master And for colony 7 “The Crimson Sparks” , credit to: Linda Wolff/Kashmir27 Don’t wanna take their ideas and take them as my own so the “credit to” are the people that came up with the names.
I’m team Colony 7!! They are so unique, and I think they are a miracle of sorts….so I think they should be called the Lumberjack Miracle Kingdom!!! Since it’s a play on Carpenter cutting wood lol. That would be a awesome name for them!! Colony 1, which is also a big hit, it would be awesome to name them the Cutting Edge Kingdom! Still a play on cutting wood and Carpenter.
A good question would be is adding a little soil good for one of my young Aunt colony's? I added this so it could be a little more natural and possibly prevent mold. I'm not entirely sure about the mold part. But the soil is mainly good for moisture since this is not a test tube setup. The colony has about 10 to 15 workers last I checked. And has three queens.
@@Yakkrtzji give it time lol. It's best to put the test tube in a dark spot or something. Somewhere where you won't look. I kind of had to do that myself because I kept checking on it. That's how my first Queens died. You learn overtime lol. But just saying generally just give it time.
Your videos are a great example of a principle I've lived my life by: that the key to all happiness and sadness is a matter of enlarging or shrinking your perspective
I’ve been trying to figure out how to strategically rot wood for carpenter ants. Seems like they do well in the type that’s spongey and moist on the inside.
@@williamdavis9471 - way more than that actually. The idea is to create a very specific consistency of rot that would look good in a terrarium starting from green wood. You’d probably also need to inoculate it with specific fungi to break to fibers down.
Honestly, queen five might still have a chance. Transfer some eggs from the healthiest colony to her. She'll tend to them and hatch workers who will tend to her while you choose what to do next. There could be a way to connect her formicarium with another. Perhaps colony 8 who is recovering. They were hit the hardest and might be the least aggressive. Keep a barrier between them, like a mesh, and allow them to get used to the smells of both queens. When things seem placid enough try connecting them to the same outworld like when you first tried to mix queens or simply remove the barrier. Otherwise queen 5 will just eventually die. This technique of using a barrier until the scent of a foreign queen is accepted is used to introduce a new queen bee into a bee hive. This really should have been the method used to try and merge the colonies. Keeping a barrier between them all for a few days or so first. Paused the video to post this when you first brought up queen 5 so no clue if this will be brought up later in the video.
That's pointless, do you not know the average life expectancy of a worker ant? It sounds like it'll probably work but I have serious doubt it would, she most certainly would recognize that those eggs don't belong to her due to colony scent and will eat them. Even if it would work AC can't keep grabbing new eggs from other colonies over and over.

"The Dunwich Borers" for colony 7 (My Mom who watched with me wanted this for colony 7 because she is on team 7) The Dunwich Horror is a book written by HP. Lovecraft about an eldritch being called The Dunwich Monster. The In a completely unrelated franchise; Fallout there was a settlement taken over by raiders that was once owned by a company called The Dunwich Borers. The original company was driven to madness by something that they were trying to dig up, and after the war the raiders met the same fate. I am very proud of my idea, even though I did not come up with the pun. Thank you for reading, have a great day.
Don't queens die shortly after running out of sperm . I read unmated queens in captivity go to incest. How come wasp& Bumble Bees don't die why is it colony versons
I was thinking about the recent failed experiment, and you know what you should have done? You should have put 2 queens together before they hatched any eggs, or right when they hatched eggs. Then you could see what would happen when they hatched and if they accepted each other or not
So glad you gave colony seven an ant tower! I don’t really have a good name suggestion but perhaps something with Aries or Mars for the name of the seventh colony since Aries is the god of war in Greek mythology and blood is his color. And Mars is his Roman name
I got nothing for names this time :P You could hold off on releasing the other colonies for now. Wait until you move back to your ant place and release them at strategic locations to reinforce the native ants in the area. Maybe.
That's what funds the channel, I'm sure! And let's be honest, if you were starting out on ant keeping, wouldn't you appreciate a one-stop-shop whose products you've seen in use? I think he's clever for doing it, and probably very helpful! I've been wondering whether to get my grandkids an ant farm for Xmas, but somehow I think my daughter would kill me! 😂
How am I just now finding out about this channel! So much to learn! Literally found a new love for ants through you. Much love! I appreciate your knowledge 👐🏻
For the name ideas, you can name One of them Volhlort, because it resembles a wooden castle or a fort. Or a starwood, or pinewood (depending on the wood that you have there). And the colonies Pilgrims because they are the first colonies who would live in the wooden tower.
here's what I think you should do with the rest of the queens 1. grow their numbers 2. find a spot with low ants and decent amounts of food 3. move them there and place some jelly there 4. observe from time to time
This seems like a good opportunity to take a page from a history book and name them after two warring kingdoms (region/era of your choosing). As well, some designs for mirrored terrariuml/paludariums come to mind. It'd be cool to keep them always close/intertwined while still safely separated, and to see how they nest differently in an almost identical setup.
I thing colony 7 should be called either The Sequoioideae Sentinels (Sequoioideae being the scientific name for Redwood trees) or if we want something easier to pronounce, The Redwood Warlords.
I think colony 7 should be the red hearts since their queen is more red and it's a kinda wood. While colony 1 can be the black spades since their queen is darker and played off the hearts theme. Both hearts and spades use the same deck but play out differently just like these colonies will.
What are the odds of finding a different ant species in a nubtial flight. That is amazing. For your seventh colony i think the name ‘misfits’ would be suitable.

They may very well burrow into this wood, but likely as a last resort, and will take them much longer to terraform to their liking
Perhaps a softer and/or Dampened wood would trigger the burrowing, from here they generally do move into harder wood to better protect the colony
I hope this helps!
Edit: REALLY bad spelling lol
A suggestion for the ant colonies names:
- the redwood union for colony 7;
-the bark diggers for colony 1.
Waddya think?
for colony 7 i chose red wood warriors
The colony 1 tower should be called Isenguard, and the colony 7 tower should be called Barad-dur.
Note: this is a reference to lord of the rings: the two towers.
I immediately thought of this when he showed us the second tower
Would a gathering of queen ants be called Antmoot?
It would be awesome to have 2 carved fence posts in cylinders to keep the twin towers theme. Carve the tops of the towers and let the ants do the rest.
I'm new here. And I'm loving this drama. While I love Colony 8, it's going to be Colony 7 that I wil root for. I think so, for now anyway. As soon as I saw the 2 red farms together, I thought of the Two Towers. I am excited to see more.
Ah... 2 towers. That reminded me of something else that existed once.
I’m so glad colony 7 has a tower as well, I’m colony 7 all day baby! The beautiful Mahogany Empire? Idk I hope the name is awesome though
Not bad, I would say

Colony#7: Red 7’s or Red Diamond Dynasty (because they are diamonds in the rough, special)

I see a lot of other people have said what I immediately thought as well; I think you may want to consider dampening the wood for the ants, see if that helps them burrow. I do also agree that it is probably a little early for them to leave.
maybe if you dampen the wood it would cause it to rot and i don't think that would be good for the colony to be borrowing through rotten would

*I love how excited they act when they're first tasting the food you put out!!* They can't stop doing a FULL BODY happy jig 💜 sooooooooooo cute 💜

A good question would be is adding a little soil good for one of my young Aunt colony's? I added this so it could be a little more natural and possibly prevent mold. Your videos are a great example of a principle I've lived my life by: that the key to all happiness and sadness is a matter of enlarging or shrinking your perspective
I’ve been trying to figure out how to strategically rot wood for carpenter ants. Seems like they do well in the type that’s spongey and moist on the inside.
soak it in water for extended period of time?
Paused the video to post this when you first brought up queen 5 so no clue if this will be brought up later in the video.
this 👆
That's pointless, do you not know the average life expectancy of a worker ant? It sounds like it'll probably work but I have serious doubt it would, she most certainly would recognize that those eggs don't belong to her due to colony scent and will eat them. Even if it would work AC can't keep grabbing new eggs from other colonies over and over.
No this can't work first mech is to weak and scent will not escape from the mech

I was thinking about the recent failed experiment, and you know what you should have done? You should have put 2 queens together before they hatched any eggs, or right when they hatched eggs. Then you could see what would happen when they hatched and if they accepted each other or not
