Irl the attacker would actually react. Redo it with an airsoft, paintball or simmunition. Show us what happens when the attacker pulls the gun into them to reflexively protect the gun while simultaneously starting a mag dump in your general direction. Honestly curious to see how this plays out when the attacker isn’t a lamp post.

The main thing is to maintain situational awareness at all times, that way no one is able to get that gun into your back.

I learned two things today from this demonstration in spite of a half-century of training to disarm a gun-armed attacker. One problem I had was that some disarming techniques required me to determine if the gun was being held in the left hand or the right hand. Your demonstration reminded me that there were windows involved and that under most conditions I'd have the reflection off the windows to see where the attacker was standing, and which hand the gun was in without having to turn my head and look (and potentially get shot before I had committed to action). Second was that it didn't matter if I was in the "escort position:" (on the gun side fighting the enemy's back instead of in the enemy's fighting zone where the other hand could reach me) as long as I was off the line of fire and had control of the gun hand.
Action versus reaction note: the enemy has to react TWICE to the disarm and this gives more time to act. First, the enemy has to reverse "don't shoot"--the reason that the victim/defender doesn't already have bullet holes is that the attacker is NOT shooting to force compliance and has to overcome that decision first. Then the attacker has to decide to shoot. That's two actions and two decisions. The attacker is reading from an internal script where the terrified victim is either frozen (deer in headlights) and confused or cooperates without resistance--the defender going off the attacker's script confuses the attacker and there's a cycle of observation, processing, decision, and acting may increase the reaction time from around 100 milliseconds to more than 500 milliseconds. Introducing unexpected events to process--vanishing from the attacker's tunnel vision, locking the gun arm up so that the attacker is unable to use the gun and has to make the decision to either fight the defender with the attacker's non-gun hand or block the disarming attempt can be further shorted out by introducing additional stimuli (aka PAIN) when the attacker's face meets the car roof, the attacker gets pinned against the car, the attacker is off-balanced and a leg is immobilized or injured while that elbow gets destroyed, the gun gets forgotten in all the confusion...by means of surprise and unrelenting counterattack the defender rips the initiative from the attacker. This may extend the tenth-of-a-second reaction gap to several seconds. In "Galaxy Quest" a 13-second do-over time travel device was a deux ex machina that the hero used. What can you do in 13 seconds?
That's the purpose of the civilian TASER system--it gives the defender up to 30 seconds to find someplace safer when it works.
I've been training to disarm and training to avoid being disarmed for more than half a century. Some of the techniques I trained on were crap--realistic training helped me identify and discard those. The remaining techniques are "don't use unless REALLY necessary because success isn't automatically granted." Don't interrupt an enemy when he is making mistakes. Putting a gun muzzle in someone's back can be a mistake. There's a matter of odds--most people are right-handed, there are some esoteric gun techniques that will automatically fire the gun when the defender moves, and failure to commit fully will result in disaster. You've demonstrated that if the sub-optimal happens--if the robber holds the gun in his left hand so that he can use his "good" hand to take wallet, keys or gun from you--you are still off-line and have the gun hand immobilized as you distract him by tearing him apart. Those esoteric "instant shot" techniques that fire the gun when the defender moves, or the attacker is startled or bumped are not well known--in the majority of cases, the attacker is consciously NOT shooting at the moment, just using the gun to gain compliance. If the attacker was ready to kill right now, the attacker would have already shot the victim--murder may still be in the script, but that's page 13, not page 1. As for the latter, one problem I've noticed with gun disarm training is that most techniques end when the defender has temporary control of the gun--and is still within reach of the now-disarmed attacker. Jason Hanson covers that flaw in this and other demonstrations--continue the counterattack that began with getting off the line of fire and left the defender with the attacker's gun and continue the counterattack until the attacker is no longer a threat--runs away, is incapacitated, whatever.
Next question is perhaps silly--wolves frequently travel in packs. What's Jason Hanson's suggestion for dealing with confederates of the attacker? I question the statistics that tell me a solo attack is the most common form with roughly 2 out of 3 attacks being committed by a lone wolf--the rest are "two or more" and that "or more" in my experience can be "six plus." Fortunately, I managed to survive my experience, and managed to get away without killing or injuring anybody. Relying on luck isn't a winning strategy. How do I make my luck?

You're right. In most cases you'll want to hand over the keys and let the car jacker drive off. Only if you feel you are going to be killed should you try to disarm someone with a gun. But a problem I see after watching this is, in your attempt to spin around and trap the gun, it is very possible you'll be slightly off and trap the gun right into your chest. If you're planning on using this technique I would suggest practicing it with a partner over and over and over until it becomes almost a reflex movement. There is no margin for error when confronting a gun wielding assailant.

Part of situational awareness is to also be aware of any bystanders to the right of you or near by in case the attacker fires the gun in reflex as his arm is being destroyed.

Thanks for the disarm technique demonstration. One very important thing when training to disarm is instructing the "attacker" to cooperate with the disarm so that the injury risk is minimized. Even small, "weak" people can exert sufficient force to injure because these techniques pit gross motor function strength and body weight and leverage against a weak point of the human anatomy. I taught a woman to use body mechanics so that a reflexive slap or palm strike would have maximum force--when one of her coworkers pranked her by startling her, the reflexive palm strike to the center of the sternum decked the bigger male. If the training partner resists, there's a chance of injuring the training partner.

What do you do if the person is a lot taller than you and you don’t match up face to face? For instance my face to their chest in the left hand scenario. Also, in right hand scenario, if a person is a lot taller than you, would I have enough leverage to shatter the elbow?

Great channel, this move however..danger. With enough reps coupled with Surprise speed and violence of action it can be done against an idiot, but better to wait for time and opportunity better than first contact. However we trained roll away and towards. In force on force training the op4 would flinch back at first movement and it’s easy to miss the pin on the weapon. This would not be my first move, perhaps only if I knew my execution was immanent. Almost the right technique here. Brave to post it, I’ll give you that brother.

What are your thoughts about the humiliation & effectiveness of a super wet willie when things get to the 'do whatever you want' point?
If I've disarmed my attacker and wrecked their elbow... I would feel so much better about it if I give the assailant a sloppy wet willie!!!

If this happened to me, the fumes emanating from my (now destroyed) briefs after I involuntarily 'mag dumped' into them would be sufficient to cause temporary blindness to my attacker!

Trap the arm. That's actually how I modify some Aikido moves. Aikido doesn't work especially moves that require you to catch the hand and twist it -- you'll never ever going to catch a hand in a real life situation especially at a dangerous moment

I've been very lucky in that I have not had to face a situation where a weapon has been drawn on me (and I pray God I won't), but I have been in some dicey situations where I have had to use my wits to get out of them. One that stands out in particular is one night when I went to a bar with some coworkers and decided to leave early. I was unlocking my car when I was accosted from behind. I turned to find a drunk 20-some year old dude unzipping his pants. Didn't take a Ph.D. to know what was on his mind. Now, people who know me know that my motto is OH HELL NO! (And that I don't get afraid, I get PISSED!) I looked him right in the eye and said, You don't want to do that. He said, why not? I said, "Because I have herpes." (This was just before AIDS). He quickly zipped himself up and backed up, I got in my car and drove off. Come to find out, this was a regular customer who had a history of doing this in the parking lot but nobody ever said or did anything. Thanks, coworkers. Thanks, bar employees. Never went back there again.
Bottom line, especially if you live in or near a college town, you need to be aware of the attitudes towards drinking and nonconsensual sex. Not what people say, but what they DO. I was in another situation at another establishment where I thought I could trust the management--I was publicly sexually accosted by another young drunken male patron in full view of his friends and the owner who thought that what the guy was doing to me was "cute" and "sweet" as in "ooh you have an admirer." I managed to break free of the dude, got in my car and squealed out of the parking lot. Next day I went back and confronted the owner. Yes, they misjudged the situation. They were sorry. Yes, this guy had harrassed other women and was no longer welcome there. BUT PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE POLICE. Please. We don't want trouble. The sad thing about it was the owners had fought to get a liquor license which normally wouldn't have been granted because they were within so many feet of a church. They won, but because they would not or could not control their customers (something I never expected because I thought I knew these people) they ended up losing their business. I certainly never felt safe going back there. And I let other people know that I did not feel safe.
