Mandalorian Season 3 Episode 6 is a weird one. It's a lot of fun, even if the cameos form Jack Black and Lizzo were distracting--but the genre droid detective story in Star Wars was a lot of fun. We're joined by Heather Antos and Paul Tweddle from Heavy Spoilers to give their thoughts.

    #Mandalorian #StarWars #Episode6
I’m going to talk about 3 things: the story, the cameos, and the dark saber. I think casual fans of star wars are going to like the most basic story here, with Din and Bo-Katan solving mysteries at Epcot Center. It follows a familiar trope that we’ve seen in shows like Law and Order or true detective.
A buddy cop show where two law enforcement officers go on various occasions, interviewing witnesses and suspects who are in the middle of their daily lives, until an autopsy finally reveals the final truth. It was also provided brilliantly in the community. [clip].
Even though these tropes are so well-worn, it was fun to see them in star wars. It felt like more of a return to season 1, where episodes delved into genres like a Kurosawa films, westerns, and jailbreaks. Star Wars has always combined genres like samurai, westerns, fighter pilot action movies, war epics, and political thrillers-into one saga. It's why it's so successful, it's familiar and new, more stipended in nostalgia than a baseball game.
So for this episode, Christopher Lloyd's motivations were a bit unclear but who really cares? It was a fun cameo because he was able to disappear in a role. Even though Christopher Lloyd is mostly known for playing Doc Brown in Back to the Future, he can play other roles, and it’s not a distraction.
Whereas Lizzo and Jack Black were major distractions, who were mostly playing themselves. Jack Black is great, very talented-and he excels at playing people who act exactly like Jack Black. Even in the sedated and underrated rom-com The Holiday, you can't separate the actor from the role. [clip]
Doug: But major movie stars have shown up in star wars before. Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford, Woody Harrelson…
Forest Whitaker, yes I know. But those actors disappeared into their roles. But Jack Black is a presence. It’s like if Barack Obama or Donald Trump showed up in a Star Wars movie-they would take you out of the world.
Doug: like Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones.
Exact;y. And lizzo is just lizzo. She’s great, but she’s always gonna be Lizzo. But here’s the thing, I didn't mind these cameos that much. They set a tone for the episode, that it was going to be fun. Star Wars are supposed to be fun and goofy at times. We can have dark melodrama in the same universe where Han acts like a goofball [him blowing on Ewok fire.
But, what’s harder to forgive is how this episode has totally fumbled the storyline about the Mandalorians.
Doung: Fumbled I say! There will be a reckoning! A total sum!
Hey, easy buddy. Space wizards. But let me explain. The season 2 finale did an amazing job of setting us up for a new season. Grogu was with Luke Skywalker. Din Djarin had just accidentally become king of Mandalore by winning the dark saber in combat-like Arthur accidentally pulling the sword from the stone.
This seemed to be setting up a conflict between him and Bo Katan, or his sect against Bo Katan’s sect.
And on top of that, he took off his helmet and was no longer on the same religious path.
And then, one by one, each of these awesome plot points was peacefully resolved. Din was reunited with Grogu in the book of Boba Fett. [clip]

Hard disagree with all three POV'S here.
It honestly just sounds like everyone complaining about how the show isn't going their way.
Paul wants questions answered immediately the next episode and is also upset that topics like droids or interspecies relationships aren't full blown movies or episodes?
Heather really wanted episodes structured to her liking and Ryan, I hate to say it, you're complaining about things that are causing fans like myself to get turned off from your content. You like 'Rebels' cool but how many times do we need to hear about you not liking Ezra and how the story should've focused on someone else?
Or how some shows or episodes are just not to your liking.
I definitely enjoy your personal takes on these topics and opposing thoughts we have but I feel over the course of watching these over the years it gets hammered on, like you can really tell when you didn't enjoy something and the content becomes a bit biased.
Which brings me to the history of the DarkSaber. The rules for it are not known to everyone nor does it mean everyone who defeats the wielder of it is automatically 'The ruler of Manda'lore'.
It shouldn't be taken so literal nor should it be looked into so much especially when some of these characters never knew about the previous owners. I dont see sidious picking it up and either knowing full well its history or being able to just go to the planet and rule it. Maul challenged Vizla and everyone SAW him win the challenge so they can follow AND respect that leader.
Is it not a thought that Woves or anyone else hasn't challenged Mando out of fear just losing or intimidation? Paz I can see challenging him out of frustration and knowing him for some time.
      Okay. Lol rant over.

You cannot have “Mando vs Bo”. That would be completely out of character for Din. For 3 years, Din has shown that he only fights when he’s got a clear, unambiguous reason to. He doesn’t have a reason to fight Bo, and to make one you’d have to make Bo completely deviate from her established character. She’d have to threaten Grogu’s life or something similarly evil for Din to be motivated to fight her. She wants the saber but as long as Din has it, the only way it could be rightfully passed to her is the exact way that we saw play out. Din would need to be defeated and Bo would have to go and beat that person. That’s what happened. Din was caught off guard, lost the saber and Bo came to his aid. If you want to criticize something, you should ask why she so willingly handed it back

I suppose she didn't see with her own eyes Din being captured; she only came in later and saw the darksaber on the ground and used it to defend herself and rescue Din. I have no problems with the way Bo got the darksaber, it was a nice twist that avoided a Bo-Din clash.

    • @notmephisto1375
      @notmephisto1375 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Even if Din doesn't care about the Dark Saber he respects the ways of the Mandalore, and is in debt to Bo. If Bo truely wanted a claim to the saber and challenged Din, he would have to accept, just as he did when challenged by Paz. I'm not sure what that fight would look like, if Din would go all out, if Bo would strike a fatal blow to win.. but I would have loved to see it, and frankly it was set up. While I don't oppose to the "loop hole" that allowed her to claim it, the fact is it's no as exciting. I'm still not convinced it won't happen either. If we go back to the premier Pedro Pascal let slip a spoiler when referring to Katie he said, "Wait till you see what she does to me." We still have two episodes left this season so let's see what happens.

    • @davidwindell
      @davidwindell ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@manoz6194 I disagree. I thought it was great, and it went back to what made season 1 so awesome. Each episode tackled a new genre of film and adapted Mando’s quest and the cinematography to fit the genre presented. Sci-fi, western, legal, mercenary, mystery, all of these are embraced by this show and it was great to have a lighter “buddy cop” episode. And they absolutely established a TON in this episode. Not only did Bo regain the saber (legitimately I might add) but they showed that Mandalor will now be recognized as independent by at least one nearby world. Just going back and building a couple houses isn’t enough to “regain” the planet- they need to be politically recognized and they’ve started that. It further established how droids feel after being discarded by the Imps, and that Mickey mirrors what the clones are going through in Bad Batch. And who knows what that knighthood that Grogu received could mean in the future? That could be far more important than any of us think. I think it was a great overall episode and even the people “complaining” about it are simpultanepusly admitting they enjoyed it. These people just want their “theories” to be correct so when the writers go off the predicted course they go into attack mode. There doesn’t need to be a “Bo v Din” or a New Mandalorian Civil War just because a bunch of Star Wars nerds (I say that as one of them) had thought that’s what would happen before season 3 even debuted. People are still I’ll about Mando taking over Boba Fett too and they’re taking it out on this season. Who cares that those two episodes were on another show? We all still watched it and enjoyed them. Ugh. Hate film critics

  • @chrismorin7652
    @chrismorin7652 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Count me among those that have enjoyed this episode, this season, and all the cameos throughout. For my part I don’t need another Mandalorian civil war. They have suffered enough. I want to see them whole again and formidable. A threat to Thrawn and the remnants of the Empire. I love that Bo has too much respect for Din to challenge him despite her ambitions. And I love that he found a way to stay true to his character in surrendering the dark saber to her. Given the fact we don’t see the Mandalorians as a major force in the content that follows I don’t anticipate a happy ending for them. But I hope they unite and pose a threat that draws Thrawn into action.

Also, beginning and ending a Mandalorian civil war in the same season, would feel rushed. I am worried Din and Bo are going to become a weird millennial power couple becoming baby Grogu's parents, driving him in the mythosaur to soccer practice, but could also see any character being killed off at anytime and the series go "game of thrones"/"rogue one"

The plot should have revolved around not only the need to recruit the Mandalorian on this world, but the need for the New Republic to recognize Mandalore's sovereignty. In this way you reveal the reason for the quest is not just so we can get to the next place we need to go, but its also in service of the main plot.
    1. Bo and Din land and try to recruit the Mandalorian. Rather than fighting over leadership, Bo tries to convince the leader dude Mandalore is habitable again. They give him the readings from Din's R5 droid.
    2. The leader dude is like "yeah that's cool and all, but even if we take back the world, the New Republic will never recognize our sovereignty. Its best we survive as privateers."
    3. Then Bo is like "All we need is for another sovereign world to recognize us. Do you not have a good relationship with this planet?"
    4. Leader Dude is like . . . "The leadership here is eccentric, but if you can find a world recognized by the Republic to sponsor us, I will consider joining you."
    5. NOW we go meet Jack and Lizzo and do the droid rebellion quest.
    6. Return and Axe Wove still doesn't want to take back Mandalore because a zealot would be in charge.
    7. We do the saber technicality, but Axe Wove doesn't buy it. But it is enough to challenge Bo.
    8. Fight happens, Bo wins.
Extra note: The reason nobody can challenge Din for the Saber is because he would not fight hard to keep it. Once he offers it to Bo at the End of Season 2, any challenge to fight him is now tainted. All it takes is a line of dialogue to make this clear.

The writing was awful. Why didn’t Jack Black bring in a handful of his Mandos in. That would not violate the “no standing army inside the city” rules. He had no way of knowing that Bo would visit his world. How long was the Mandos contract? Nobody at all bothered to look at the actions each droid did leading up to their malfunctions? That is pretty basic. The ugnauts claiming they knew everything and were prideful about their work, yet they don’t give a swamp rat’s ass that their droids aren’t working. Jack Black insisting that he personally oversaw the droid reprogramming and he doesn’t bother to check if the software had a virus. He doesn’t check if the recents software patches are to blame. What was Doc’s end goal? Why did he want everyone to quit relying on droids? Yes Dooku was right, but what does that have to do with him taking a city hostage? The writing is so lazy and treats its audience like idiots. Nothing is shown. Everything is told in the most immersion-breaking way.

I think the reason this worked in earlier seasons is because since then they have put SO much more on the table. Yeah, that first season had long-standing tropes as the basis for many episodes but the dark saber wasn't even an element of the show at the time. Neither was Ahsoka, and neither was bo katan. None of it. You can direct attention away from an overarching plot because there isn't much plot (in the best way possible) but NOW..... you've introduced space Excalibur, an exiled queen, a rogue warrior, factions of a scattered nation who don't get along, a reveal that a planet thought dead is habitable, a freaking dragon, a prophesied return of a leader of Mandalore. You cant just.... gimme all that and then ask me to sit through a side quest with a vintage story structure just for the fun of it.

I've been utterly floored at the quality of stories when comparing Bad Batch season 2 to this season of Mando. Bad Batch feels so much more adult; it feels better written, like even side quests further the story or further a character's development in some way. Mando feels like they don't even know what they want to do with it, very aimless. I've been so surprised to see the Jon Favreau has written most of the episodes - not in a good way. It feels so backwards that the CARTOON is more adult, better written, and just a better show overall.

You're not wrong, but I put it down to Favreau and Filoni having to change their overall plan for the series when it was insisted upon by Disney that Grogu be re-introduced to the story as quickly as possible. How else to interpret the way that was shoe-horned into the mediocre Boba Fett show? I think they were forced to adapt and agree to things they hadn't originally planned for. I mean this cruddy filler episode with the pop culture celebrity cameos must surely have been intended for the cancelled Rangers of the Republic show, but Disney still wanted to use it and so it got shoved in here, with that lame resolution to the dark saber thing tacked on at the end. Sad to see what was a great show lose its direction and focus, but that's Disney SW I guess.

My friends and I have drawn the same conclusions. Bad Batch S2 seems to know what story it is trying to tell, while Mando S3 does not. Bad Batch has left me thinking, while Mando has been mostly forgettable.
Oh well, nothing great can stay great forever. I'm kinda hoping this is the last season of The Mandalorian. Then we get Ahsoka, then Skeleton Crew (for what that's worth?). Knowing that Filoni gets to direct the movie that ties them all together gives me hope that they will quit wasting the quality and momentum they have built, and deliver the first good Star Wars movie since Rogue One, closing out this chapter of Star Wars in a satisfying way.

Now that I think about it, the aesthetic reminds me of Book of Boba Fett more than anything.
I'm assuming this is a Kathleen Kennedy directive with the intention of making mandalorian more kid friendly, but in typical post Disney Lucasfilm style abandoned the core fans.

And in the previous episode, the pirate Gorian Shard had an underling ugnaut pirate that was dressed very similar to Smee, Captain Hook's underling. These homages have been very distracting and take me out of the Star Wars universe, I hope they stop.

I think Din giving the Bo the Darksaber through technicality really plays well into his character. We've seen him have a sort of diplomatic role in the show. He brings the people of Free Town and the Tuskan Raiders together in season one, then in season 2 he is able build a sort of friendship with Ashoka even though he was told that Jedi and Mandolorians were sworn enemies , and brings a bunch of different people together to rescue Grogu from Moff Gideon. He's also seen her lead Mandolorians on multiple occasions and she also has the respect of the Children of the Watch so it would not be in his interest to kill her, plus this gives them what they want without having to lose good leaders before taking back Mandalore.

The Mandalorian keeps getting better, every week!
The less; "Star Wars," they try making it, the further afield they go, into wilder and even wackier territory, the more it feels like Star Wars!
Even in the Clone Wars series, it was always the weird and wonderful, (a strange stop-over on Mortis, the Nightsisters on Dathomir, General Krell, in the Darkness on Umbara, and even Colonel Meebur Gascon and his; "D-Squad," etc.) that made for some of the best, most memorable arcs of storytelling in the entire saga.
Whether you're a fan of the current season of the Mandalorian or not, it's arguably impossible to deny they're still using the series to further expand the boundaries of what Star Wars can be!
And as for me? I am ALL IN for that!
Not every episode, (or even every season,) is going to be everyone's favorite, which is why it's awesome we're living through these times, when there's no end in sight for many more!
(Especially for someone who lived through the so-called; "dark times," following Return of the Jedi. When, for all we knew, any future prospects of getting any more stories told in that Galaxy would be limited to whatever fans could get Lucasfilm to approve of.
    (What became the; "expanded universe.")
    (Now; "Legends.")
So, it's difficult to not appreciate whatever we get, when we were for so long left to go without.

Theory time: notice how every time before Bo held the darksaber up above her head triumphantly, but this time she held it pointed down almost like she was having the same problem Mando was having of not being able to get it up. Bo is unsure of herself, not being sure if she should lead, and definitely doesn't belive she deserves the darksaber. I think in the next 3 episodes they will face a threat possibly the mandalorians that freed Gideon, and Bo won't be able to wield the darksaber properly and mando will have to use it to save her, or more likely she will lose it to this enemy and that will be the end of season 3 and the driver of season 4.

It’s called world building everything doesn’t have to wrap into the main story that’s part of what gives life to these shows

I’m a huge Star Wars fan. 77 drive in. I watch every Disney+ episode at midnight. I stood in line for every midnight movie showing since 1999. I watch the tartoons even as an grown adult. Star Wars has become confusing af to me. A lifelong fan. I watch all these breakdowns on TH-cam. I’m so confused. I have no idea wtf is going on anymore. I’m not really understanding all these foxes, maps, sabers. It’s getting extremely confusing. As a lifelong fan of Star Wars, I’m not sure I understand anything dave filoni is doing anymore. It’s confusing and frustrating. I’m not having a good time following Star Wars anymore. Guardians of the galaxy and avatar are far more simple to understand. Filoni has ruined Star Wars for the original hard core Fanbase. I’m not having fun anymore.

If Moff Gideon was rumored to be in four episodes then maybe he's been hiding out among the mandalorians who can't show their faces and really has been around without anyone knowing

I Love the team-up here with unscripted(ish) discussion. I think they are trying a little hard to set up a broader ST:Mando Universe. Filoni has his green light for a motion picture and is trying to do a wide cast of the net to expand mando. This season has been good really, but in many ways a little non-sensical.

I dunno, I kinda like the fact that they aren't dragging on plotlines. These days a lot of shows just limp forward before anything important happens (looking at you walking dead). Mando came up with a loophole, so he used it. It's been clear before that he just rather get rid of it. The situation presented itself. He doesn't care. She wants it. Everybody happy. No dumb standoff between characters that need to team up later again for some more melodrama to stretch out the runtime.

I wasn’t thrilled with how the story resolved around the cameos. Lizzo banished Lloyd, and he went off repentant and willing. WTF?! How is that a real scenario? The writing was more like a 70’s sitcom than a modern show.

I think people who are confused and not enjoying certain episodes will enjoy them more once the season ends and various plot points are resolved. I thought it was a fun episode. Never heard of Lizzo before but was happy to see JB and CL.

i think this episode is a setup of din and bo's relationship in the future. ever since din got the dark saber and was told what it meant to have it he didn't think twice giving it to bo that means that since the beginning they are not going to do a din vs bo but they will have them work together. the season for me is not only a redemption for din but also for bo and the mandalorians as a race and all will pay off in the future season and mando verse movie. the setup with the romeo/juliet thing in the beginning and with jack black and lizzo might be a little silly but you have to make it fun sometimes to break up the seriousness of the other episodes. :)

I loved it. Felt like what Star Wars is supposed to be…Fun and not taking itself too seriously. There is plenty of room for the serious and the not so serious in the Galaxy. I think Mando is pretty much just about cool side quests, so I’m easy to please. Now just make Republic Commando canon and I’ll be very happy.

  • @MrLocokrang

We get it, noone likes side-quests ...I acutally enjoyed the episode. Don't remember who mentioned it, but this whole episode was dedicated to Bo-Katan character development as well as Din's, the dynamic and the difference between the two is showcased even in the way they run avoiding civilians. Than you have the DIn's diplomacy skills evolving and so much more just subtle character development. Dave has been doing this with Clone Wars and Rebels for years .... Now if you want to go nitpicking the bad stuff, this episode just shows how no cameo can replace a poor political/business decision of firing an already developed character, Cara Dune ... perhaps the whole episode in season 3 was dedicated to further developing her character. All in all, I call this one a very well executed filler/side-quest episode ...

I'm getting tired of hearing about the dark saber and I would expect more from Ryan. Din never wanted to the dark saber. They made that very clear. Bo isn't going to challenge Din because she respects him. It's really simple and they spell it out for us pretty well.

I liked the episode and since I didn't know who Lizzo was, it took nothing from the episode. The only issue is that either in Mando Season 4, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew or the Bad Batch, Filoni will have to show us a Quakta (sp) and a Stiffling side by side at some point in the future

I truly don't understand the hate this episode got. We got fun cameos, a fun buddy cop side quest, a great fight scene, an amazing perspective of how some droids feel on this planet and progressed Bo's storyline. What I especially have issue with is people giving shit to Black and Lizzo. Bigger names than the jabe appeared in SW and its such a stupid double standard that some actors can be in it with no issue but others can't. Black and Lizzo are both big fans of the franchise and did exactly what their characters were meant to.
How in the hell can people not have an issue following Pershings boring ass but yet complain about getting 4 big cameos while still progressing the story?

@@alexanderwilliams799 it’s not that bad though, the complaints are mainly the show hasn’t gone on the direction their head canon took it.
For example, at no point has a battle between Din and Bo been teased. It would go against Din’s character to fight her for the saber.
Silly complaints from people wanting to complain because conflict drives more views I guess

We remember ESB and ''Luke... I am your father'' or just OG Boba Fett being a unit. This is closer to C3pO's cereal than it is to that former greatness. StarWars has been milking that for 40 years, but Disney slaughtered the cow.

    • @SaraAdrian

People wanting them to fight gave me hound vs the mountain Cleganebowl vibes, and it really does go against both their characters. Bo knows that the reason why they were able to be taken over was because they were weakened by endless civil war. Din doesn’t want to rule and doesn’t want to fight his friends. To have them fight may have been a direction they considered but it really would go against who they are.
I think the problem is they have a larger story in mind but haven’t fully hashed out either how they will get there, or executives are putting their fingers in the pie and complicating how the story is playing out.

I understand people being upset about the placement of this episode and the amount of time it took to compete this side quest. However, Star Wars has always been weird and pulpy as George designed it to be. It’s a fun episode, but this is another example as to why we should have longer seasons!

Damn Paul has such a shitty attitude about all of this. Ryan literally explains the point of the scenes Paul didn't understand the point of, then says he still doesn't understand. Feels like he's just arguing for the sake of arguing as opposed to actually trying to understand what people enjoy or got out of this episode. I think every part of it made perfect sense.
