I'm not being deluded, because he is a true world class driver. The crowd cheered for Brazilians Japanese and Americans who whoever was trying to harness the crowd cheered for ..... Is truly the very best race of the year ....
dani Leuenberger Yeah i agree re WW2. The US refused to get involved initially, assumed the UK would fall over and ignored multiple requests for assistance from Churchill, saw that we were holding up and only then got involved. Such an amazing CHAMPION!!! man he was doing it so well. More than 3 times in the front, what a shame of Honda engines, not only for him for the other drivers too
Not much of an Alonso fan but my god I feel sorry for him. Crap car and engine in F1, does well in his rookie debut at Indy 500 only to be let down by an engine failure - a Honda engine at that. Ok, it's not the same motor in F1 but it's still a Honda motor.
+Hernan Tuquero I know I failed to put it in my comment, but I was talking about the F1 team/car. Directly responding to the 'Crap car and engine in F1' comment by OP.

Amazing man and driver. At Indy we expect the best and we pay to see the best and this guy delivered. Alonso could have done Monaco and earned some of his millions by running mid pack with a uncompetitive mount but the guy puts his reputation completely on the line by doing something he had never remotely done in a race car. That's confidence and guts! He already had legions of indycar fans before Indy, now he has millions. Here in Indycar Nation we want ALONSO!

A fast car he also had to learn new procedures and feel. He's a great driver who uses his head, it showed here! I do hope he returns, he earned that right!
Alonso is the best I've seen in Formula 1 over the last 20 years. Just amazing ability to adapt his driving skills to whatever car he is given and he showed it in an Indycar as well. Just amazing.

It was great to see him racing at te front where he belongs. And great response from the crowd appreciating his efforts. First time I've ever watched Indy and I did so to see him race.
They have swivelling cameras in most us motorsports, its a lot more spectator oriented than european sports in general. The radio was a spotter, which happens only really on oval circuits i think as vision in indy cars is poor and it would drive you crazy with a spotter on an f1 track
2018 Alonso will be back in a Chevrolet engine Indycar :D All joking aside, I feel sorry for him. Such a great driver but equipment keeps failing on him everywhere.
Breyzipp Karma is a bitch. He couldn't get his way at McLaren in 2007 so he leaked the Spygate scandal. Then he was at Renault when the infamous cheat Flavio Britatore fixed a win for him at Singapore in 2008. Then he tried his politics at Ferrari and that only worked as long as they were competitive. Eventually the team had enough of him and signed Vettel. Now he has dragged McLaren down with him since it was Honda who insisted on signing him and agreed to pay his salary.
TheIronDuke W. nonsense. What politics did he tried at Ferrari? they didn't have the best car those years and even so he almost won two titles for them. And it was Alonso who left Ferrari, that's the reason why they were upset with him afterwards, with sarcastic comments about him. And how was Alonso at fault in Renault? what kind of evidence do you have to blame him? and MLaren lost the 2007 championship because they decided to support their golden boy Hamilton the rooky, they couldn't control the situation, they coudn't control their drivers, and I include Hamilton who was demanding a lot from the team, that situation leads them to the ridiculous point of telling everybody they were racing against their own driver Alonso. Pathetic behaviour that lead them to lose the title.
Reno Salujõe Felipe was uncompetitive COMPARED to Alonso because Alonso is much better driver. Period. Excuses, excuses, excuses. Politics, number one status, car build around Alonso, luck...bla, bla, bla. Always excuses to justify why Alonso beat and even destroy his teammate. All this nonsense because some people don't want to give credit where credit is deserved. Alonso is simply that good, that's the readon why he beats his teammates. Hamilton only matched Alonso's points the season he had all the support from his team and the team was racing against Alonso.
Breyzipp Did you just forsee the future? Alonso is coming back to Indy in 2019 with a Chevrolet engine car. Are Chevrolet engines good? Not much of an Indy fan so I wouldn't know if they're good.
Had to come here today since 2017... couldn't watch it earlier because it was too bad for him...hope he will get his triple crown and a competitive renault in 2022 : )

Was going for Alonso to win the race and a few laps before his engine failed he was quick regain position. Sato screaming victory is epic though. Congratulations!

@@aidankeogh5350 Not really. Toyota has attempted to win at LeMans for 2 decades and their win with Alonso was their first. They came very close in 2016 but the car gave up at the final hour. Also, Alonso didn't just cruise to victory. The guy worked on it. After the safety car, Fernando pulled off some spectacular overtaking. Then the no. 8 was hit with a 2+ minutes penalty because of Buemi. Alonso's night driving whittled that gap down to seconds so Nakajima could overtake Lopez for P1.
Just when it was getting interesting... 20 laps remaining, Alonso making the charge. Had his engine lasted longer he would've been fighting for the win for sure.

I will always remember shaking his hand on the his out. I love f1 and I was so exited to see him race and I remember heading to my car witch was parked in the infield and we were in between the position tower and the panasonic pagoda walking towards the pagoda. Then I remember seeing a bunch of media and people recording and asking questions come out of the pit lane area and in to the part where all that stuff is to do in the infield and I ran up to him and told him good job and shook his hand.
couldn't believe my eyes, just as alonso was getting back to the front runners. I'm now an indy car fan, what a fun race! the restarts were so interesting. Was great to see Sato, just like in the the older F1 days. Can any real Indy car fan tell me, is Montoya good these days? I'm not a fan of him to be honest, just knew he was a real hot head in F1
What a drive, he's clearly lost nothing in spite of not having won an F1 race since 2013. If this performance in Indy doesn't make people sit up and take notice, least of all McLaren and Honda, I don't know what will...
Unfortunately,i didnt watch the entire race.I only started watching in the last 40 laps.I saw fernando could win and said ok,here we are and then BOOM.Im a huge McLaren and F1 fan but honestly,i dont know what to say about honda.I wanted to watch the race at indycar's youtube channel when its uploaded but now that i know how it ended,i dont know if its worth it.I noticed that the commentators praised alonso's racing skills and said he had a great race.Would be nice to get a viewing of american fans thoughts about this years indy and fernando's race.Hope he 'll come back next year, cause if he does,it will bring even more eyeballs on indy500,which is great i have to say as a european f1 and wrc fan that race atmosphere is fantastic.
I thought it was cool how the crowd gave him an ovation. Just like when Mansell came over I remember from day one he was greeted with open arms. Had a couple of TV commercials for sponsors (Not that he needed the money} Wouldn't it be good if Europe learned these things, instead of hate and hoping for failure. Yeah, I lived in Sweden in 1992 and remember Andretti very well. From day one it was nothing but Andretti failing or hoping for failure.. But the difference in Europe it is always negative. It was pretty good when Micheal came back to Indy with another team and smoked Mansell in the 1st race in Australia.
Incredible driving by this guy! To do that as a rookie is one for the record books. I have to say that as an F1 driver he was at a disadvantage against these veterans. As the race wears on, and they start adjusting things, the more acclimated drivers are more adept at telling the crew what they need. I could tell he liked the faster car. He made that race for me, I thought he might win.
Would have interesting to see if he would have won the race, he and Rossi were very unfortunate to drop back after the pitstops. But one thing is for sure he fought every single lap. Was a pleasure and a treat to watch Fernando fight at the front again.
Non è possibile. ... su tre motori esplosi uno era di Alonso. ... grande gara , grande Fernando . la Honda deve darsi all' ippica... durava di più il motore del mio ciao!!!!
Respect doesn't write history books. Winners write history. In the future when people look through the champions of F1 they will only see his twice and then nothing for the rest of his career.
Frankly, I fully expect Fernando Alonso to be an indycar driver by 2018 or 2019 - whenever he can break free of McLaren. He definitly proved that he can be competitive in indycar racing, he can move those vastly different cars quickly. So, finding a cockpit would not likely be difficult, I think.
Fantástico Alonso. Qué pena de mierda de motor Honda..... Si no llega ha ser por la rotura ......alucinarían ustedes con los adelantamientos de Fernando en las últimas vueltas
did alonso's team over tuned the engine? cause sato have the same engine and sato used to blow many engines in f1. or is alonso just unlucky to get a bad engine in the batch
Perhaps the worst weekend in McLaren Honda history? I can't get over the fact that he went to a different race series and his Honda engine still blew up, literally can't catch a break.
He is one extremely talented driver, a true racer. The commentators when it happened saying he has had to do alot F1 drivers don't have to do publicity wise etc. Not sure they realise just how much publicity an F1 driver has to do, for them it also never stops lol.
Interviewer: "Alonso, how does the transition from F1 to Indy feel?"
Alonso: "For some reason, it feels exactly the same...."
Next year he went back and retires and went back to f1 in 2019 I think

It's official that everytime Alonso drives a Honda machine, he is cursed :(
This was my very first time watching a whole indy 500 race. It's an amazing category. I became fan from now on.
Such a shame that his car had a problem. Alonso is the best driver. Respect
Honda, get ready to be fried by Alonso on team radio at next race in Canada...

Best driver in the world.
He did a really good job despite that problem he led some laps and he should be proud that he made it that far
Just because he was 7th doesn't mean he could've won
Why would you put that in the video title... cheers...
can someone tell me what engine McLaren used when it was at its best. What do they use in sports car
It's interesting how chill he is
What a sportsman. ❤️ I admire him to death
The "Irony" Is Strong In You....
May The Honda Engine Be With You!
;)
I hope he comesback to Indianapolis. He did it great to be a Rookie. Good luck for him for the rest of the season in F1
It's so sad but it sounds hilarious when the engine let go. I love this guy.
Did the Honda suck a valve?
REAL WINNER of INDY 500 its not always about the Trophy 🏆 it's about the RESPECT! Champion Magic Alonso
Respect doesn't write history books. Winners write history. In the future when people look through the champions of F1 they will only see his twice and then nothing for the rest of his career.
"Indy Lights engine."
Alonso a gifted driver !
Frankly, I fully expect Fernando Alonso to be an indycar driver by 2018 or 2019 - whenever he can break free of McLaren.
He definitly proved that he can be competitive in indycar racing, he can move those vastly different cars quickly. So, finding a cockpit would not likely be difficult, I think.
that bloody Honda engine again!
Honda must be loving all this attention!
Rest In Peace Mari Hulman George died today 11.3.18. 5.28.17 was my favorite memory at the track Paddock Penthouse Box 26
This was a race win for Nando. So gutted
He was 7th. That isn't race winning
Fernando, PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEASE get rid of the color orange. You Deserve soooo much more than this! Great race anyways!
TheJunkEraser orange is mclarens main colour
op is saying Alonso should leave mclaren
Thats the point...
He should just fucking retire, he is so over rated
Alexandru Carjan, Go back to school and learn something...
Classy respons from the crowd. Classy!
Alonso:"The same procedure as.....fuck yeah, i love my Honda-Contract!"
Fantástico Alonso. Qué pena de mierda de motor Honda.....
Si no llega ha ser por la rotura ......alucinarían ustedes con los adelantamientos de Fernando en las últimas vueltas
Well Mclaren Honda you have done it again
did alonso's team over tuned the engine? cause sato have the same engine and sato used to blow many engines in f1. or is alonso just unlucky to get a bad engine in the batch
What a classy guy. Way to go Fernando!
first time watching indy 500. only watched it because of alonso. and i didnt that know that where soo many ex f1 drivers here.
the only thing keeping this man from winning is the fucking engines. jesus christ I wanna see this guy get another WDC before he retires.
Perhaps the worst weekend in McLaren Honda history? I can't get over the fact that he went to a different race series and his Honda engine still blew up, literally can't catch a break.
dagnammitt I was rooting for him too.... he had an awesome drive all things considered
Did he left f1?
Just for this race, he'll be back in F1 next race
That's a real racing driver
He is one extremely talented driver, a true racer. The commentators when it happened saying he has had to do alot F1 drivers don't have to do publicity wise etc. Not sure they realise just how much publicity an F1 driver has to do, for them it also never stops lol.
I just can't believe that the engine died on him again! I hope we will see once again Alonso winning the F1 or Indy500 race before he retires!
when the f1 legend drive in indy 500
nailed
After Honda, Ed Carpenter has also rejected Alonso for the 2020 Indy 500.
Come back and race with Honda again
