And to think I just bought an OG Echelon a couple weeks ago. That said its recoil is already pretty tame. An integrated comp would be nice but I'm not sure it's worth a new buy just for that. But if I had the choice at time of purchase, sure, I'd almost certainly have picked up the comp model.
There are pros and cons to the comp, you definitely have a great gun still. Pros are your slide will stay cleaner longer, slightly quieter, and no worries about the gas/flash obscuring your sight or making your red dot dirty faster if you install one.
@@ronaldnunley865 agreed, and I have the threaded barrel so that's an option, just nice to have the clean integration and lower bulk of a native comp/port. I do have an RDP comp that I'll see if I can get indexed right to be useful at least as a test. What comp did you use?
@@GranTigerGaming 100%, no regrets. I love my OG Echelon, a comp would be a sweet option though. And yeah, I know they make them, I'd just prefer to keep the clean lines and shorter barrel of an integrated comp.
@@ronaldnunley865 Nice. I just shot the echelon this past weekend, out of 20 options I got to try at the range it was my favorite fullsize, followed by the walther PDP. I actually like external comps more, would rather have it as an option than built in.
Seems like about every 10 years the dealers and aftermarket suppliers push compensators... As hard as they can and then they just disappear... Remember the Glock C's series ? Still got mine from the 90s
To test the effectiveness of a comp, or ports I think you should use +P carry ammo. Comps perform better at higher pressures and with most range loads there will be little perceptible difference.
Great video man, it was interesting that at first long ago when the 1st Echelon was made, there was an email from Springfield that a quick detach comp was being made for the threaded barrel model (like thier Hellcat RDP), but seeing they went the route of the Prodigy with the port cut, it makes sense the Echelon was getting that treatment.
Many states, including the one I live in, have outlawed any threaded barrels (because they are scary looking). It's wise to do it this way for that reason and others.
I am big fan of Springfield especially XD series. Have them all and since 2010 my XD service in 45 cap has not had a single issue nor other ones. Echelon seems to have a really good trigger and all else is excellent.
When switching the MantisX between guns it's a good idea to switch gun selection from the library or simply reconnect to force it to recalibrate again. Its been a while since I tested not calibrating between moves, but at the time I did I observed a benefit of recalibration between different firearms.
Can someone tell me what kind of target system that is on the right where that plate gradually goes down to the ground with each shot?? That's super neat!
The biggest advantage for ports/comps is for competitive shooting. Those two things allow for quicker shot and more accurate placements and therefore faster times and less or more hit points depending on the match type. The only thing is is that USPSA doesn’t have a division for these types of pistols (besides open) and that category is for the super modified race guns. IDPA allows for it but only in two categories. So in short hopefully gun manufacturers are pushing the competitive areas to open more categories.
Great video as usual, sir. The comp looks like an after thought on this. Minimal change in the slide geometry tells me that this was not a holistic addition. More like Springfield trying to keep up with the "Jones" of the industry.
Thanks Justinopinion. After watching few videos on comped ones and being a member of the Croatian brotherhood of the XD I love all things Springfield. Might trade in my first release Echelon for one with a compensated barrel. But first, need to shoot one myself to see if its worth it.
Good morning, Justin and family. 💪🇺🇸💪☕️. Yes, sir. Looks like comps on pistols are the new thing now. I know so far im enjoying my Smith&Wesson M&P9 2.0 4.25 carry comp. I just broke in my shadow systems XR920P yesterday. One thing i notice tho on the XR920P vs. the Smith&Wesson carry comp is that after 50 rounds, my front site on the XR920P turned black. Other than that problem on the XR920P. shooting good. I guess it's the 2a Patriot 124 Grain Ammo im using that's just dirtier. I'll have to play around with other ammo to see which shoots cleaner.
There is a velocity loss if you in essence shorten the barrel but this should still be 4 inches. Shortens the sight radius too. Again by a small amount. Giving people a choice is great. Do not see a downside to that.
Even more, I'd like them to release an actual compact model with maybe a 15rd mag, shorter grip, and a shorter barrel, but with VIS and the same general aesthetic. I suspect they don't do that already so as to not compete with their own Hellcat line though.
They should just offer the Glock 19 sized version and be done with it. The stock grip and trigger on the Echelon are great. Now give me the carry version option! The ability to have two guns in one is really appealing.
Just like my Hellcat Pro. I knew that I should've waited to by a Springfield Echelon. I just had to send mine back to Springfield, the slide would lock back almost every round. The extended mags didn't do it as much, but I couldn't figure out the problem. So after buying 5 mags & Safariland duty holster. I'll be waiting for about 5+wks.🤬
Now, lets see how fair they are to their customers. Will they offer just the slide and barrel for a reasonable price to go on existing Echelons? Or will they try to price it just enough to where they squeeze out every dollar they can, making it better off to just buy another complete gun.
Sig FCU was first and had teething problems that come with being the first. Springfield and HS Produkt design a new COG which is the same modular concept as Sig's FCU and nails it.
excellent video ... congratulations ... it shows an exceptional choice either as a weapon of practice shooting or as a weapon of duty ..I think it is a choice that certainly deserves our attention and may be the successor of the known glock ...good morning from greece
Ya, would have preferred you ID what ammo you were shooting. As almost everyone carrying a 4"+ barrel 9mm is carrying +P of some sort, you should have tested it with hot ammo (and since you didn't mention your ammo, I assume it wasn't a hot premium ammo).
Optics, compensators, lasers..can they just come out with a compact model already? Everybody has taken the Sig “new” model game that isn’t really anything new just adapted from the original design.
I wish you'd shoot at night with that ported gun. And tell us what you think. Is it a problem or not. Great video. Thank you for doing this. One other thing, can this gun handle +p ammo
Dumb argument if someone trying to harm yo a** u won't notice a flash..you'll b to busy shooting and most don't train at night due to most folks having to use indoor ranges

Actually, the one on the Echelon should technically work better. The Echelon's port is smaller so gases will be coming out at a higher pressure than the port on the Prodigy's barrel.

Hello, Would you pick the comp for a first gun over the standard echelon. I’m 65. Thanks
If similar in price, there is really not a downside to the comp version, and some benefits. So, all else being equal, it would make sense to.
Thanks for the great review. Do you have any concerns about bullet fragments coming out of the port?
None at all.
Where are the 3rd party polymer grip modules?
Sharps Bro's and Icarus Precision have aluminum offerings. Mischief Machine might also have an option.

Springfield made it known recently that they aren’t releasing the slides and barrels for individual sale.
It’s a ported gun not compensated. Ports are holes in barrel. Compensated is compensator fixed to threaded barrel.

The velocity of 1/4” of barrel is negligible👍
