We Ate Indian Food for 24 Hours in London, England! | Dahi Puri, Mumbai Sandwich, Kati Roll + MORE!

  • Eating out in England isn’t all about fish and chips! In fact, one of the most popular cuisines in the country is Indian food - to the extent that Chicken Tikka Masala is actually one of the national dishes of England! :) Join us as we spend the next 24 hours eating Indian food (and maybe one cruffin added into the fun;))
Our first stop is at The Kati Roll Company. Address: 24 Poland St, London W1F 8QL, United Kingdom.
After that we walked by a cruffin from Richoux and just couldn't resist! Address: 172 Piccadilly, St. James's, London W1J 9EJ, United Kingdom
Then we had a uniquely London experience by picking up some butter chicken & karahi paneer at the Harrods Food Hall. Harrods is a world-famous department store, and their food hall is the stuff of legends.
For chicken tikka masala, samosas and garlic naan we stopped at Punjab in Covent Garden. Address: 80 Neal St, London WC2H 9PA, United Kingdom. The chicken tikka masala here has been the restaurant’s signature dish since 1973, and it’s easy to see why. :)
We took our food nearby to Seven Dials Market where we ordered more Indian food at Naanstop Express. Address: 35 Earlham St, London WC2H 9LD, United Kingdom. We ordered the Mumbai sandwich, dahi puri & mango lassi. It was a buffet and every bit was DELICIOUS!

Many years ago in London I had "Tandoori mixed grill" the first time ever in my life (actually indian food for the first time). Since then I can die for it. On a motorcycle tour through England and Scotland in 2016 I persuaded my accompaniing friend to have Tandoori mixed grill every fu***** day of that trip. That was fun!

So pleased you enjoyed the Indian food in London. Many "Indian" restaurants in Britain are run by Bangladeshis but there are a number of excellent South Indian restaurants in London, producing some of the best vegetarian dishes. You should also try out some Nepalese food, their restaurants often run by former Gurkhas on retirement from the British Army.

If you want to enjoy authentic Indian food in London, you have to go to Southall (close to Heathrow Airport) or Wembley (Ealing Road). I also recommend visiting Neasden Temple (BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir) close to Ikea (Brent Park, North Circular Road, not too far away from Wembley). Absolutely stunning! We used to go there every so often, when we still lived in England, and took our friends from abroad to visit. Southall is more Northern Indian (mainly Punjabi). There you can also find the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, one of the biggest Sikh temples (gurdwaras) outside India. It's marvellous for shopping for 22Kt jewellery and clothes (Salwar Kameez, Saris, etc.)

I know that Harrod's is a bit high end but just SEEING all the zillions of food options from all over the world in that Food Hall is an amazing experience! Great that you had fun indulging in London's Indian food options. You're by no means the first Westerners to enjoy Indian food. Queen Victoria herself adored it in her last years and, the staffs in her palaces were relieved when she died because that meant they could go back to cooking ONLY English dishes! Willa sure is becoming cosmopolitan via you're showing her all these locales and cuisines! Great work!

I totally like Indian food in London. When I was there we had a small restaurant where barely two tables and the oven fit in right outside of our bed‘n‘breakfast. It is still the best Indian food I ate in my life. But as you mentioned there are not that many options to get Indian food in Germany. Out of the top of my head I just remember two restaurants which are 20 to 40 km away from where I‘m living. Probably in the big cities there are more options, but definitely not in some rural areas. Here you get Italian and Turkish food and that‘s fine. But some more variety would be nice.

Ahh… you must go to Brick Lane for authentic Indian food in London. Looks like you did well and enjoyed it, but that’s the place to go.
How funny (and understandable!) your reaction to Harrods! I used to live up the toad from Harrods and buy the most amazing brownies there. It’s literally the most expensive shop in London. The owner’s son is the poor man who was Diana, Princess of Wales boyfriend and who died with her.
Willa was adorable, they way she was really concentrating on the cruffin. And you were so funny - I thought you were concerned about the health consequences, when you said, it’s covered in sugar, and then BAM, you took a huge bite!!! Lol!!!

Guess, your most critical gourmet person still count the differnt tastes into sweet, like icecream, chocolate or down to the base of tomatoes or nuddle taste. Hard to convince her for different spices. Is she already to much germanized or just only know european food in general. Please work on it so one day she also will appreciate all kind of different cuisine. Btw, the first seconds when she immediately refused to take a bite and taste from Tanner, I thought: typically german or like the german phrase: Was der Bauer nicht kennt,, das isst(frisst) er nicht :-D Unfortunately I dont have the chance to try indian food so often. Just subbed... you are such a friendly family. But Harrods for a 'takeaway meal' - WOW!
If in Central London, a well known 'secret' place to go and eat (that ALL local office workers, nurses at the nearby training hospital and similar KNOW); and has been since 1920 (but moved a few times since then, especially after being hit by a German bomb during WW2); is the Indian YMCA Restaurant.
It's a 'school canteen' style, which is open to the public (for breakfast, lunch and dinner). Located on Fitzroy Street (near Fitzroy Square), the menu changes, often daily, is staffed by Indian chefs and is excellent value (as it also caters to the hotel/hostel students on budgets and is thus subsidised!).
Well worth a try, if in the area and you don't mind going back to the 'grab a tray', pick your own dishes and share tables mentality. I've been popping in for many years. You can Google Indian YMCA Restaurant menus E.G. August 2022 - Set breakfast for just £6.50... and unlimited free glasses of water if you can't take the 'heat' - Yum! Yum! 😎👍 🇬🇧
