God--this man was incredible! That is the most musical drumming ever. Every stroke was perfectly matched to the other instruments. This man has finesse and could blow the doors off if he wanted to play loud. Gene Krupa--Buddy Rich---what can I say? They were similar but totally different! Many moon ago I bought Gene Krupa doing Dark Eyes with the late great CHARLIE VENTURA on tenor sax. Who would have ever thought an old Russian Song like Dark Eyes could swing so much? Anyway I would play it over and over and remember hearing Krupas drum breaks on the end. It was like waiting for the grand finale on a fireworks show. Krupa had that energy and excitement who could play exactly what the people wanted. I am a huge huge huge Buddy Rich Fan. Buddy once said this. QUOTE I can play an extended drum solo with all the intricate chops flash and mind blazing speed. Gene can come out and play a simple drum solo say sixteen bars. Just plain drum Break and being the HOUSE down. that was Krupa in a nutshell. Keep it Simple and Make it Swing. Krupa was the Man. Could you imagine Jazz without Gene????
Heres the thing about Gene Krupa whether you like him or not. He that way of playing a set that produced MELODY and over and over again sounds of floor toms and syncopated snare work. Not a technician like Buddy Rich or Louie Bellson but he could add that bit of EXCITEMENT in his drumming. Sort of like a CHEF making a Signature Dish He had all the ways of making that Dish that Drum Work good to listen to and admire. And he did make the drummer a special guy. Like Buddy once said could you imagine JAZZ Without Gene? Krupa gets all the respect and credit for bringing the drums up front.
I had the honor & privilege of working with Teddy Wilson for three weeks back in 60's and we got to talk a lot. Being a drummer, I asked him how he liked playing with Gene. He said this: "Gene had a way of building solos from simple elements. He could construct solos out of, say, just triplets and accents around the set, and he was always telling you a story, and you always knew exactly where he was in the song and when to come back in." This is why I've always enjoyed his playing over that of Mr. Chops, Buddy Rich. Buddy dazzles you, but drummers, I ask you, what lick or phrase did you ever cop from Buddy..!? Gene inspired more drummers to play drums than any other drummer in history.
My Mother always talked about Gene I never knew what she was talking about until later. So strange she wasn’t old but I guess she could hear What he was putting down 😀

I had the honor to meet him when he was playing at the Plaza 9, when I was 15. He spent the whole night talking with me and my mother. He was the nicest man, he gave me a pair of his drum sticks. Anita O'day showed up as a big surprise and did the Drum Boogie Man with him..
He gave me his Telephone number, and told me to call him, if I wanted to take some lessons. I finally called, but I waited to long, I was a bit shy. He was sick by then with Leukemia, and he was not in a good way. He died a year later.. Let not an opportunity pass..
I love Gene's interpretation of Dark Eyes. So, tasty and musical. I got to see Buddy in the early 1980's but never Gene as I was born in a month before this performance and then Gene passed a few years later. But I'm fortunate in another way. My stepdad got a signed autograph of Gene in the late 1930's. It reads, To Billy, Every good wish to a swell little drummer. -Gene Krupa. My stepdad told me the story of how he sat right near Gene's drum kit that show. He said Gene was amazing and a nice guy, too. Now, I have a story from my stepdad to hold onto and a signed photo that Gene once held. Priceless!

Listen in this how his playing compliments the music, varying dynamics in a way Rich didn't do. Musicality is more than playing constant 'balls to the walls' like Rich did. And no disrespect meant to Rich - he had more technique than anyone of the day. But I'd argue that in general Krupa played far more musically.

Yes! Funny thing is in the late 70s, I was listening to my Kiss records and my mom's Krupa records.... never knew the connection until a few years ago!
Surprisingly in view of his fame, Gene was one of the nicest sweetest people in the business self-effacing almost to a fault, someone who knew his limitations and was always trying to improve, taking lessons with the great NY Philharmonic timpanist Saul Goodman and also, very late in his life with that master teacher Jim Chapin.
Of course one of the all time greats...an innovator and just a master of incredible variation from a small drum kit...always extremely tasty, and fun to watch
I get more out of this than watching today's "drummers" with the 58 drums, 23 cymbals, 12 cowbells and 8 foot pedals. This legend I think could kick the butt of any of today's drummers. Period.

Great drummer, extremely influential & a great performer. Excellent rendition of "Dark Eyes" here & Gene Krupa was into his sixties & in the latter years of his life. Remarkable. However ... we will never forget though this Wonderful "Drummin' Man" & exciting, ground-breaking musician.

Gene Krupa was the BENJAMIN FRANKLIN the ALL AMERICAN Drummer Boy. Krupa had it and then some. If you would really want TECHICAL PEFECTION Speed Drumming and unbelieveable drum solos I would definitely switch gears and nominate Buddy Rich as the Super GREATEST TECHNICIAN. but but but KRUPA was the dady o of them all. He made the DRUM SOLO a Happening. Gene was really the man who gets all the credit for making the drummer a High Priced Guy. Showmanship he had it and man those facial expressions of him made you feel he was in pain but not really Krupa was digging the charts . Gene Krupa has gone down in history as the Drummer who started the Whole Thing. Thank you Gene

Ooh Gene Krupa..... He truly was one af a kind and totally unique. When i watch this video i kinda see an "spring" just waiting to be released. So much power held back in anticipation...Truly eye-opening....
Gene Krupa had a style all his own. Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson and Krupa could all rip on a snare drum. But only Krupa had the feel to play it the way he does while the sax carries the theme here. His snare roll into the piano solo introduces his light touch on the hi-hat as the piano plays. And his feel on the ride cymbal when the tenor comes back is rock solid. A great performance by all, to be sure. But listen to the bass player, he is particularly splendid !!
Gene had chops, but notice how every stroke here is about working off the other instruments and playing a tune on the drums! Very few drummers could do this-it was natural with Gene!
Gene was my guy. So was Joe, louie, Roy and Buddy. But, nobody had a band like Buddy's. I was shell shocked watching BR push those guys. Miss all of them.
This music is great, these guys are top class at their craft Mind blowing in so many directions, sich stuff condensed in a few lines of a music piece. The ways the go, they could play this jaming it for hours to no end, their range is just mesmerizing
Brilliant and very nice.. heard - but never saw - his playing when my dad would play the LP in his Fisher equipment plus Klipshs 2 corner large ones, and 2 smaller ones .. what a sound!!
Paraphrase of an interview I saw of Krupa: I was trained to play dance drums. Even if in the wildest solo, if the beat wasn't there, and people couldn't dance to it, I would feel I were failing in the solo. That's a very close paraphrase. I'm just an average drummer, but the greatest compliment I ever got was by a fellow musician who said, "Every thing you play feels funky." I can live with that. I'd rather have feel than the chops of Buddy Rich X 10, and that is not to be negative whatsoever of Buddy Rich or technique. Technique is important, but feel is much more important. Krupa had the greatest feel, in my humble opinion, ever, followed closely by John Bonham. Rich and Krupa were both masters in their own way. We were lucky to have had them both behind the kit. Oh, one other thing: That little snare piece from 30-35 seconds just captures the essence of Krupa so well.... just a handful of notes that swings like a mother... simple, but so dynamic, cool, and perfect for the song transition.

Gene Krupa had a style all his own.
Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson and Krupa could all rip on a snare drum. But only Krupa had the feel to play it the way he does while the sax carries the theme here. His snare roll into the piano solo introduces his light touch on the hi-hat as the piano plays. And his feel on the ride cymbal when the tenor comes back is rock solid.
A great performance by all, to be sure. But listen to the bass player, he is particularly splendid !!

Gene had chops, but notice how every stroke here is about working off the other instruments and playing a tune on the drums! Very few drummers could do this-it was natural with Gene!
Gene was my guy. So was Joe, louie, Roy and Buddy. But, nobody had a band like Buddy's. I was shell shocked watching BR push those guys. Miss all of them.

His health was not the greatest at the time...he died in 1973. Still could play till the end!!!

Gena and Buddy are both exceptional players and innovators. When it comes to feel and touch, Gene was the master.
Definitely. Buddy was a more interesting soloist, but for playing to music, Gene played with more artistry IMO (like you say, "touch & feel").

Paraphrase of an interview I saw of Krupa: I was trained to play dance drums. Even if in the wildest solo, if the beat wasn't there, and people couldn't dance to it, I would feel I were failing in the solo. That's a very close paraphrase.
I'm just an average drummer, but the greatest compliment I ever got was by a fellow musician who said, "Every thing you play feels funky." I can live with that. I'd rather have feel than the chops of Buddy Rich X 10, and that is not to be negative whatsoever of Buddy Rich or technique. Technique is important, but feel is much more important. Krupa had the greatest feel, in my humble opinion, ever, followed closely by John Bonham.
Rich and Krupa were both masters in their own way. We were lucky to have had them both behind the kit.
Oh, one other thing: That little snare piece from 30-35 seconds just captures the essence of Krupa so well.... just a handful of notes that swings like a mother... simple, but so dynamic, cool, and perfect for the song transition.
We owe that man so much.
