He makes it look effortless but oh the finesse and classy delivery!! One listens and views in awe. He never attacks, he coaxes, placates, loves the instruments.
Papa Jo was easily the best "showman" drummer back in the day. He knew how to get a crowd's attention during a drum solo just by being tasteful. A true master of speed and dynamics.
Speed, dynamics and volume control. Papa Jo could draw you in, like he was whispering a secret to you. He always leaves me wanting more. I would much rather watch a master like him, Joe Morello or Gene Krupa, than a drummer who just attacks, like Buddy Rich.
I'll take your word for it, but his drumming in this video was boring and insipid from first note to last. Gene puts more excitement into the intro than this guy does this song combined with the next 14.
I met this dear and brilliant drummer in 1976 at a drum clinic.. What else could I say except that the meeting changed my life.. Thank you for sharing this timeless beauty.
A man who had fun with his drums 🥁 they were nothing but mere toys for his pleasure and with them he made art for the ears to hear and the soul to feel!
I used to hang out with Papa Jo at Frank's drum shop in 1976. He suggested I buy a Paste flat ride cymbal that I used on"(Don't Fear) The Reaper the next day. I will be forever grateful.
I know what you did. I had a band in the 80's and that was one of our faves. I didn't have a percussionit so also played the cowbell part. Thank you Sir for that walk down memory lane!
Very cool that Papa Joe suggested the Paiste flat ride. He's a magician on the drums! Btw BOC were the first band I ever saw live at the Capital Center in Largo MD, Uriah Heep opened.
Bought my first kit at Frank's in 1975. Slingerland kit with Paiste cymbals. Only had $400 cash on me. They trusted ne for the remaining $100. The hi-hats, coincidentally, were Paiste Formula 602 Sound Edge hats, which I still use to this day. Hanging out with Jo at his crib on East 64th street, I got to check out his hats, which were old A. Zildjians, a thin 13" Top and a Paperthin bottom, maybe 12-3/4", anyway, slightly smaller than the top cymbal. Felt blessed that my first hi-hats, also fairly light, were very much in a Jo Jones mode...Jo used to say, "I was never a player, I was always a listener, and look who I got to listen to." As such, my limitations being manifest, I always aspired to be a good listener on the drum kit.
I don't think Paiste are equal to Zildjians at all. Zildjian "Top Beat" hi-hats are easy to buy. Every set I ever auditioned sounded great. The ride cymbal, not so much. Turns out I am very particular about the sound of the ride. My standard is the ones we used to play back in the 1970s. I had to buy one for church and I was surprised that it took me several weeks of playing many Zildjians at many stores to finally find one I liked. Years later I was in Guitar Center and they had a used Zildjian ride that I liked, and I bought it for half price, I may have paid $150 for it. I loved it, it was golden, but at the time I was playing in a hard rock band, which is something I don't really do, and the sound of the Zildjian was too delicate in that band, it sounded too refined and not raucous enough. I found myself in Guitar Center again and darn it if they didn't have another used ride! I like it, but I passed on it because I already had a ride and I needed a crash. But then three weeks later I was amazed to see the used Zildjian still there. Self-discipline has its limits. I calculated that Providence meant for me to own that cymbal so I bought it, having no need for two rides. Upon playing, I discovered that it had a meatier tone than did my first, and on hard playing it built up a pleasing roar that ordinarily I might not prefer but in that hard rock band it was just what the doctor (Ph.M, that is) ordered, and it worked great. Ironically it also worked well as a crash. When crashed it delivered and sounded great with a distinctive "crash" voice. I love Zildjians!
WOW,......a very creative, and very subtle solo. A thinking solo. Unlike much of the bombast you hear today with an excess of drums and cymbals. One ride cymbal and a high hat, a snare and 3 toms. Adult and class all the way. Thank you Papa Jo.
That wive's tale is a lie, don't believe it. First off, the amount of people that do anything for work that is remotely fun is miniscule. Second, he makes it look easy and fun, but it's not. Anyone in the arts will tell you it's hard hard hard work. The fun is for you the viewer. For the performer it's hard work and even if the actual performance is fun, the rest of the 98% required to get there is not.
@@TheLarryBrown Well I happen to love my job and what I do, which makes it pretty easy to do. I hope you find something you love that you can do for work. Second, as a performer myself, I can tell you that yes, there's a lot of work, but there is some serious joy in performing, especially when I'm playing with other musicians who make it fun. Back in the 1980s I had the privilege of rooming with a jazz musician and adjunct professor at Rutgers University named Buddy Montgomery, the brother of Wes Montgomery. He had tons of stories from the 60's Jazz era, and he had stories about Papa Jo and what a carefree and joy-filled guy he was. Again, I hope you find something in life that gives you joy.
I am grinning like an idiot right now. This really grabbed me. Pocket for days. First time I have seen Papa Jo play and it was incredible. I feel like every drummer I like has probably watched him and tried to take things from his style. Wow. Did not expect to be blown away like this. Wow. Thanks.
Sublime. The switches from playing two sticks in one hand, and open to close hand drumming, letalone keeping time and keeping it exciting...just sublime.
Freakin’ Awesome! Thanks for posting. I was 8 when this was recorded and have never come across it until now. You can’t “un-hear” this, so it is truly is a milestone in my appreciation of drumming as art. We’ve born witness to true greatness.
He's playing the drums like they're an INSTRUMENT, not just a time keeping device. 5 drums is all he needs! No gimmicks, 10+ drums, no dozen cymbals. Just talent!
The softest, and intelligently realised drum solo in the world!!! Most other drummers are just unintelligently "BASHING!!!" the drums as if fighting the Devil or something!!! This is world class number ONE and only legend of jazz drumming!!!
Amazing. Papa had extreme skills, but what a demonstration of not needing to cram as many notes as possible into each measure. Quality, not quantity. And with only a single cymbal and hi-hat. Can't imagine that Papa would ever lower himself to getting a reaction from an audience by playing a double pedal bass drum roll.
The sound of a kit without muffling, compression, channel gates, just tuning and a deep supply of rimshots and stick/head interaction is incredible to hear in this setting.
I play at a hobby/recreational level, at best! I don't know all the best drummers out there. I know which ones I like, and TH-cam has introduced me to countless drummers I would not have heard of otherwise. This drummer has an unparalleled confidence as well as an incredible aura of a relaxed approach to his solo that I do not think I've seen in another drummer. Fantastic work! I'll be checking out more for sure!👏👏👏
I don't know how I ended up here, or really who I'm watching, all I know is that I have just given a round of applause in the solitude of my kitchen to that drum solo. MAN WOW. !!!! Percussion with the hands and no sticks, dynamics that leave you speechless timing that is effortless. Thanks for the sharing of this. I am speechless.
Man I grew up religiously hungry for these clips. 60s B &W TV we got a lot of these. I played my uncles drums and caught the fever when I was maybe 2 years old.
it’s not a drum solo. it’s pure artistry of the highest order
Live
Blert
You don't have to throw shade on all other drum solos just because you like this one.
Those drums need tuning and he needs to take a lesson or two from Mr Rich
@@MrDougiew1 Tuned how? But Rich isn't as musical. That's what counts.
Dude looks like a magician about to pull a rabbit out of his hat, but instead it’s an insane groove. His smile made me smile. Thanks for sharing this!
Protocol of joy. 😊
Yeah, his facials are something else.. had a smile all the way.. and me too!
This is other worldly. I've seen good jazz drummers do Caravan before, but never like this ! THANK YOU !
The art of making the drums sublime.
He's so relaxed! This isn't just jazz, it's zen!
❤verissimo
I just love that we still have the privilege to see this, hear this.
He makes it look effortless but oh the finesse and classy delivery!! One listens and views in awe. He never attacks, he coaxes, placates, loves the instruments.
I love his facial expressions. It's like he is saying, "Can you hear them speaking to me? I'm talking back to them." He looks so happy!
Papa Jo was easily the best "showman" drummer back in the day. He knew how to get a crowd's attention during a drum solo just by being tasteful. A true master of speed and dynamics.
He was too handsome! I was always distracted by his good looks. He was a good man that was kind to children. Appreciated you Joe Jones!
Speed, dynamics and volume control. Papa Jo could draw you in, like he was whispering a secret to you. He always leaves me wanting more.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is class…😎
That's what I was going to say!!! Well said Mike!
Something that is dearly lacking these days.

AND HOW!!!🥁🥁🥁

What's a drum clinic?
Where you should be.😂😂😂😊
Joe's facial expressions are a pure joy
❤😂❤ Davvero
so elegant, so clean, so relaxed, flawless, melodic, control, I can't get enough.
I cannot stop watching him, Papa Jo. He's just..... everything.
❤si❤
Quelle musicalité ! Humour, gestuelle magnifique , swing .Phrasé ..Créativité ...UNIQUE JO JONES !
Wow wow wow just imagine the hours he put in on the kit , the talent of creating and hearing a rhythmic world and his expressions are priceless!
A man who had fun with his drums 🥁 they were nothing but mere toys for his pleasure and with them he made art for the ears to hear and the soul to feel!
Nicely put and very accurate!! Papa was the stuff.
Imagination, playfulness, effortless technical mastery and the rhythmic magic of none other than the sublime Jo Jones. What a wonderful clip.
Every video that I see him playing, he always has a smile. A master
I always had trouble telling Papa and Philly apart, and then they went and died within 4 days in 1985. Absolute masters, both of them.

Drums, cymbals ,sticks ,fine articulation, plus amazing natural talent equals an awesome performance
Great showmanship and that smile! Not to mention is musicality ❤️

Thats his standard set, Papa Joe could literally play a gig with a pair of brushes and a phone book.
no need to put down modern music
Proof that at this age muscle memory still exists great job. Love ❤️ your spirit.
Nothing quite like watching someone who loves playing drums ! Having a blast along with him!

Oh wow a drummer that doesn’t need 100 different drums, cymbals, gadgets, and yet create one of the best solos of all time.
True! This feels like a knock on Neil Peart though 😢
absolute quality. a lifetime of drumming in 7"
His style is solid gold. Authentic, volatile, organic, completely aware and fitting are some of the words I feel when listening to this.

You play what suits the song. Double bass goes well with high gain guitars playing at the same speed jmo
Where is the love button? True showmanship and super talent!😮😊
that drummer is incredible,i’ve never heard of him he’s unbelievably smooth like buddy rich

❤merci pour cet instant de grâce!

THE GREATEST JASS DRUMMER EVER
Это Друм соло звучит уже 60 лет и оно самое лучшее из двух десятков ( а то и больше) КАРАВАНОВ. . Спасибо , Папа Джон
