Making The Solunar Box | Michael Tyler's FREE Project of the Month | Vectric

  • Make a “Solunar Box”! This project was inspired by vintage woodcut style designs. The box features a pair of pivoting lids using a simple offset “hinge” design. The name “solunar” is a combination of “Sol” (sun) and “Lunar” (moon). Yes - it’s actually a real word!

    Very Nice, this is the first time I've seen something that makes me want a CNC machine. Just a point: when you make a box out of 3/4 material to me it looks clunky, 1/2 inch would make it more delicate and refined. Great job!

    Incredible project! It seems like your machine is also working very good. Just one quick question. How can I set different depth on one single vector like it is done here from the border to the center with fading effect? Sorry if the question has already been asked, didn't go through all the comments. Thank you!

      Thank you for your kind comments! The fluting toolpath can create varying depth cuts if that's what you are trying to achieve, this video may help: th-cam.com/video/9s5ctySjxA8/w-d-xo.html Thanks :)

    Hi, Nice project! I am a relative beginner, having built my Ox cnc router about 6 months ago. Can I use these files with Cut2D? I would like to make this box as it will be my first proper build job. All my previous pieces have been signs of one form or another. Well done!

      Hi Nick, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately you can't create this one in Cut2D as it is only compatible with our VCarve and Aspire software , however we do have a variety of free projects available for you to use with Cut2D. Take a look at all of our free projects here: www.vectric.com/vectric-community/free-projects. You will see if they are compatible with Cut2D when you click into the individual project page. Thanks

    Why did you mill the wood with climb milling? The wood has much better finish when it milled by conventional milling. The most easy way to decide the best milling direction is to compare the finish of the stock and the detail itself. If the stock has better finish, then you should change the direction of milling.

    question ? why don't you use the same drill bit to test the turning of the lid, it has the exact same diameter that you drilled so no sloppy testing kind regards

  • @davematthews7686
    @davematthews7686 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The files are listed for Aspire and VCarve Pro. I don't see anything that would prevent using VCarve Desktop to make the project.

    • @robertcapraun5066
      @robertcapraun5066 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to use the VCarve Pro files with "Desktop"

    • @davematthews7686
      @davematthews7686 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can but you may need to tile to get around the 24" limits. If the project depends on one of the add in gadgets you cannot use Desktop as it doesn't support gadgets. Most of their projects list both Pro and Desktop. I thought it was odd that this one didn't.

    It's a bad idea to glue end grain to flat grain. As wood moves, this box is going to come apart.

    • @gbwildlifeuk8269
      @gbwildlifeuk8269 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its a bad idea to offer free plans to make this box. You need a CNC machine! Most of the woodworkers I know use saws and chisels! They MAKE not machine.

    Sorry, but the droning background music detracts from the project. I'd rather hear the CNC machine, or a human voice over at key spots.
