    What a great video to stumble upon! Hey I just wanted to mention one thing: Finding time for everything is hard, but something super valuable for viewers is to see mistakes that you make and how you resolve them. Too many times I have made a mistake like blowing out a piece of inlay and thinking I was ruined, and its great to see people making beautiful pieces also making mistakes and reminding me that they happen to everyone and are completely resolvable!
    Thanks again for the video, you did a great job putting it together!

    Awesome result. The only suggestion I have is to maybe use a slightly darker wood like walnut, rosewood or even ebony for the first set of dovetails. It would create more of a contrast.

    Beautiful piece. I just love leopard wood. It just looks so amazing. If you ever make another then you should add the width of your blade to one of the last tails on all your pieces so that when you cut the lid off and put it back together then the spacing between all tails will remain the same

    Beautiful and gorgeous work! You're not just a woodworker, you're an artist. However, I'm not sure there's enough contrast between the purpleheart and leopardwood, at least in the video, but that is just a personal opinion and in no way diminishes your artistry. Excellent work and video production is superb!

    I was holding my breath as you ran that beautiful box through the table saw to cut the lid....glad it was short (my wife doesn't like me turning blue). But I, intently focused, noticed that on the last cut, the box lid moved in to the box body as you came to the last inch of your final cut - and I was afraid that it wouldn't come together - but you did it. It struck me that maybe putting a 1/8th" shim in the vertical portion of the leading edge would have prevented any wee-waw saw blade cut. But then, maybe I'm just not experienced enough to pull this cut off free hand - yet. Nice work on putting this video together, and the box is pretty nice, too ;-)

    • @grfinewoodworks4175
      @grfinewoodworks4175  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh yeah! The pucker-factor is always high when separating the lid. The push blocks I use are quite good at keeping the pieces stable and haven't let me down yet.

    I’ve been staring at the dovetails , even blown up and I cannot see the purple heart in the dovetails. I’ve made these before. I’m not saying you did not do them , I just can’t see them. Beautiful box!

    Beautiful work! I'm very new to woodworking, and trying to learn from these videos like many others I assume. It looks like you put a rosewood ledge on the inside to rest your lid on. If you would could you explain how you put that in and how the bottom was placed? I appreciate the time you put into your project. Thank you!

    • @grfinewoodworks4175
      @grfinewoodworks4175  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The brown wood is lacewood, also called leopardwood :)

  • @garybeasley4885
    @garybeasley4885 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Beautiful work! The only observation I would make is since you are hand cutting the dovetails you should have made the ones the saw cut passed through 1/8” longer so the finished box would have an evenly spaced dovetail at that point.

    • @grfinewoodworks4175
      @grfinewoodworks4175  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. I usually accommodate for saw kerf, but it becomes a little annoying when doing inlaid dovetails. Plus I knew I would be removing material from the bottom which would make the lower maple tails be roughly equal to those below the lid.

  • @dave29123
    @dave29123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Finished product is very impressive. I can't help but notice that by cutting the lid where you did that one of the dovetails is now smaller (by the width of the blade). I've seen this occur with similar boxes created in other YT videos. Did you ever consider widening, if possible, that one dovetail to take this loss into account so that all the final, post-cut dovetails would be equal? Is this possible and/or practical?

    • @grfinewoodworks4175
      @grfinewoodworks4175  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Excellent observation. I typically accommodate for the saw kerf when making boxes, but it would have been a nuisance given that these dovetails are inlaid twice over. That being said, I would definitely implement this if I did it over again.
