Making The Bookpile Box | Michael Tyler's FREE CNC Project of the Month | Vectric

  • This project is an interesting and attractive box made to resemble a pile of old, stacked books. The lid resembles a slightly oversized book made to overhang the “books” that are stacked underneath to provide a convenient “lip” when lifting the lid.
    The lid of the book box was intentionally left “plain”. However, this does lend itself to customization on your part, if you would like to create a nice design on the lid!
    I used Aspire to create the book spines, then exported as STL to use in VCarve. A few of the software features used while designing this project included the Drawing and Node editing tools, Moulding Toolpath, Vector Offset, and Boundary Create, Interactive Trim (scissors tool), Rail Sweep, and Create Shape modeling features.

    I really enjoy Michael's tips and tricks. Things like cutting up the credit card to make a spacer for the hinge fitting.

    This is the nicest project I have ever seen. Can you imagine to customize the book edge for a friend? For example. The smartest ladies in history named Sue. Or, the greatest child named Paul. It makes you want to run out and buy a CNC. Just fabulous!

    The VCP and Aspire projects are quite inspiring. Each time I do one, there is a new process to learn. Painting techniques and special cutting processes have really helped to "up my game". Thank you.

    Interesting way to set hinges so they don't look so obvious. Did you run into any trouble with "springing" or binding?

  • @ryantaylor6831

    This is great! One change is make though is to cut the miters using a 90 deg v bit with the CNC since you’re already machining both sides. It would be easier and more accurate.

    This may seem a silly question, so please do not be offended. I have just purchased my very first cnc machine. I have gone for the onefinity woodworker. I have purchased Vcarve Pro. The question is this, as you are working on both sides of the wood, why did you not install a 90 degree v bit and do the all the mitres along with the rebate for the hinges with the relevant bit change, after all you know the exact size of the hinges and where the mitres are to go, as then you would have a perfect fit and take out the use of another machine in the shop.

    Why start with gloss and then follow-up with flat. I understand the flat allows better paint adhesion, but why not just use flat for the whole seal finish before the paint? I know there is a reason but it is not clear to me and I am new to trying out how to finish projects. Michael is a master.

    For some reason when I download and install them into Vectric I can’t determine the depth of the tool paths. Your settings don’t show so don’t have anything to go by. I know I’m missing something. Did the same thing on the Parrish pump. I’ve downloaded others projects and didn’t seem to have any issues. Not sure as to what is going on? I’m sure it’s on my part though.

    Very inventive method of building a box. Well done, it looks great.
    I suspect you set the hinges incorrectly but need a close up pic. The hinges wouldn't normally have large gap between the faces when closed. You would get a normal barrel look with hinges closed without gap. (Which way were countersinks cut in hinges)

    • @garyh7397
      @garyh7397 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, he cut them correctly. The top of the hinges on the lid were not recessed...

    • @vectric
      @vectric  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Greg it looks like there should be four crv files and one PDF file. The Box Sides Layout files look like they should just be one sided and the Two Side Lid and Spines files two sided. Is this what you are seeing? Hope this helps. Thanks

    • @greghohner966
      @greghohner966 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vectric Yes that is what I am seeing but when I machine the two sided board on the second side there is no file to do this. There is a file called Swept Profile lid .25 DE EM (Clear) but I have no idea what this file is for, It is not the file to cut out the lid and parts from the first side of this board. Has anyone else had this problem or am I doing something wrong?????
