    I used a 4 port "Universal Laptop Battery Tester" like this back in 2012. It came with all the cables mounted on a battery connector with screws so you could customize them if you wanted to. Had a ready-to-use cable for every major laptop brand plus spare cables and connectors plus software. It was like $240, imported directly from China, from the factory that we used to import replacement batteries from. I can clearly understand why you're so happy, Sorin :) This tool is a game changer indeed.

      @nipembedded9976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I know what are you talking about. That tool has limited functionalities, even the cell voltages are not read correctly for many batteries, apart the price which is higher. Also the charging/discharging current is lower, the load is external, etc.

    • @em0_tion
      @em0_tion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nipembedded9976 Price mentioned was with all the customs and VAT taxes, 179 pounds before taxes sounds like the same price to me... And i would be able to use this tool (your personal design as i see by your comments) for only one battery at a time. Lacking of any functionality (maybe) is probably negligible, considering i'm talking about a way way older design originally developed for Win XP PCs with a COM port connection. Even if the current was lower, i would still be able to charge and discharge 4 batteries at the same time way quicker if i just wanted to "quick cycle test" them right after receiving them from the factory and before sending them to a client. Readings were correct on most of the batteries. All i'm saying is it was a good working horse of a tool. As a matter of fact, the firm i left back then is still using it now. Imagine if you test around 200 batteries per month every year since 2012 till now... that's a lot of batteries and at the end it gets the same job done ;) I'm sure yours is much more sophisticated and i applaud your time and dedication in developing it. I would love to see a version that can work with more batteries and have plastic connectors ready for an HP/Acer/Dell etc. battery, it's just really practical for businesses. Hobby-ists won't mind the 1 battery at a time design, i'm sure, in large scale though - not enough. I would love to test and compare your device if i was still working in this firm :) Oh, well... All i can do is wish you good luck and keep up the good work ;)

      @@em0_tion Thank you. I have started this project because I have not found a good analyzer for laptop batteries. You are talking about a tester while I am talking about an analyzer. The product you are referring does the same thing like many PC softwares, it just read the data from batteries, it performs very basic tests like reading the cycle count or FCC. You can do it with any PC software if you can connect the battery to that laptop. But, if you have dead laptop batteries, not detected laptop batteries can you read data from them ? Can you track to voltage cells under load to analyze the voltage drop, and the deviation between the cells in order to avoid locking ? Can you measure the internal resistance ? You know that the trend of manufactures is to use slim/flat laptop batteries with different connectors. NLBA1 is already tested and works great with most of them. The charging algorithm for Macbook batteries is also validated, I don't know if you tester can test Macbook batteries. All the best.

    I check battery’s with a electronic load for capacity. I have the time to do it this way.

    • @Conservator.
      @Conservator. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way you test a battery will give you the real capacity. (Charge it, then discharge and measure how much energy the battery can deliver).
      The software gives a result almost instantly. This can only be based on data stored in the package. It should be fairly accurate but you cannot be sure. Especially not when the battery was sent in with a laptop for repair. So checking the battery with a load, like you do, is the only way to be 100% sure imo.
      I do like the NBLA tool though because it can read the data and recalibrate etc.

    At 27 minutes, you are looking at a pack that has 1 cycle and you state it has good cells. The analyzer and you don't seem to notice that the cell voltage of the first cell is actually measured to be 0volts with an internal resistance of 1mOhm. That does not look like a good pack. The analyzer even hangs when trying to read the voltage of the first cell, indicating that something is going wrong. EDIT: However, for some reason the cells 1, 2, and 3 are present. So either the pack is incorrectly configured or the analyzer software has a bug?

    Hi to everyone! I would like to thank the person who design and develop this NLBA device. There is a loot of good batteries out there those manufacturers are locking just to make people spend money! Let us be honest if any of us peasants would do such thing we would go to jail! This Analyser have helped me sort through my battery stock. Many of them turn out to be in great shape. I had completely unresponsive batteries that I was able to awake, charge, grade and I learned that battery that was made in 2008 have 89% life in it and the cells are great having only 22 ohms of resistance…. CRAZY. I think this is so far the best device I bought this year a specially that it was not too expensive. This will be handy every day in my line of business as I resell laptop parts! Thank you! I have no problem recommending that to other people who have knowledge and a bit of common sense…. This will not repair any bad cells as this is impossible - bad cell needs to be replaced but it will do miracles when it comes to good cells that was blocked by so called protection! Anyone who deals with laptops or other electronics that use this type of battery should have this on hand! Period! I only hope that it will be constantly developed, that owner will take on board users suggestions as I bet there will be many and that we can save at least 50% of them batteries going to waist and destroying our planet! Once again Thank YOU!

    @39:45 Sorin some batteries don't have cycling counter, so they will say that they are never cycled, but in reality - they were used. So don't trust the counter when it says 0... sometimes it might be true, sometimes not.. also... less than 100 mOhm isn't always a terrible battery imho, but I might be wrong. If the tool measures the resistance of the circuit inside of the battery and after that detects only the resistance of the battery, probably it's more accurate, if not... it's not 100% accurate.

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In principle the cycle count is incremented after a cycle 0% -> 100% or close to that, if the battery is always charged and discharged in the range of 30-70%, cycle count will probably be zero. The cells test reads the voltage of each group of parallel cells in range of mV and the current in range of mA.

    Your " favorite " part is the repair section / tab , not sure if it's just a language issue or what ?
    But repair implies that --- it is doing repair / fixing issues .
    Most all laptop batteries us 18650 cells , some like Apple use envelope cells , but the voltage is controlled by the chemistry , so 18650 is from 3.2 - 4.6 , or nominal 3.8 + or - .2 .
    Much like all chemistries , cells can be completely discharged , and when they reach 0 volts , they can reverse polarity , many chemistries this can be " repaired " , within limits .
    So you may want to call the device manufacture & see if there is a program within this product that can " repair " that new / but dead battery ?
    The problem with most chemistries is sulfating [ this is being use as a generic term , different chemistries use different terms for internal shorting created by low - to no voltage ] with lithium ion , and most lithium chemistries - these are called dendrite growth between anode & cathode of the cells .

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The software page is called "Repair" because it computes the internal resistance after you replace the cells, it shows you if welding was fine. Also because it as the functionality to generate some special voltage patterns to revive those batteries that have been stored for a long time, are not detected by the laptop but do not have Permanent Failure flag set, so you can "revive" those batteries. Since the laptop batteries are "Smart" you cannot have access directly on the cells through battery connector.

    @18:34 - what about doing "wake up battery" before you read the cell info?
    also try a discharge & charge to see if the cells are really dead.

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How "Wake Up Battery" functionality works: there are batteries which are stored for a long period without beeing charged. It could be that some of them are over discharged, the internal chip from the battery still has no Permanent Failure flat set but the battery is not detected by the laptop. In this case "Wake Up Battery" functionality generates different voltage patterns trying to revive/wake up the battery.
      In discharging graph you can track each cell voltage. Those cells which have higher impedance will have a higher slop. For a new battery the curves for all cells are almost identical, no differences between curves. If there are 2 good cells and 1 bad cell then on the graph you will see that the bad cell curve will have a higher slope, the voltage drop is higher for higher impedance.

    What's in the box? What's in the $450 box? Arduino or Raspberry Pie? Place your bets everyone. That's a nice looking interface. Simple, functional, probably reliable. But that is expensive enough to make me think to look at some datasheets and probably just make one. For a shop 450 is no big deal, it will pay for itself pretty quickly. It's a cell balancer which you can make very easily with tp4056 boards and it speaks BMS which is the key selling point but only if you need that data. I'm sure if you balance the cells and hard reset the BMS you are back in business. You have a bunch of used batteries you want to sell so you need the numbers. Selling used batteries is a sketchy business. Sketchy not proper dodgey. I'm feeling like this might end up being a potential headache down the road. It's been 4 years since this was posted, I'm curious how it's all worked out. Any horror stories or juicy tidbits for us Sorin? Was it $450 4 years ago or did they gift it to you or what was the deal? How many pizza this is?

    Sorin, Thanks for showing this thorough review. However, their site states, they are out of stock. When I emailed about availability, their response was for me to send money and they will fulfill when stock is replenished. Be careful when promoting and endorsing an unknown supplier that is skeptical enough of their own product they take money upfront before manufacturing. Your reputation is as stake, is my point.

      Hi, currently we are running out of stock. We have sold all units in just few hours. To prepare a next lot now when China has issues is really difficult. Many people asked me to pay now in order to secure the price and to get one when it is back in stock. I have declined such options at the beginning but then I took it in consideration. So, for all comming inquiries (including you) I have presented 2 options: 1. I put you on the waiting list so I can contact you when the item is back in stock or 2. We think to release pre-order option: you can pay now and you have the benefit securing the price and one units once it is in stock (estimation end of april). Was the email not like this ? I have NOT released pre-order option, right now there is NO pre-order option, we are still thinking based on customer suggestions. Having pre-order option is really nice because you have a fixed price (it is very possible that China will increase the price) and because you will have an unit guaranteed. The next lot is limited. So, please don't ever think that I could take money without shipping the device. This is my product developed by me from scratch. Just check customers feedback and ask if they are happy and how is my support. I even offer remote session to explain how to use the device, for free...

    We need to collectively demand that the manufacturers update the controller software so that when power is removed from the controller, it automatically resets to factory settings, or this hell will never stop until Mother Nature does her best to balance sooner or later.

    • @nipembedded9976
      @nipembedded9976 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe I didn't get your point. You can read battery data and cells resistance before selling the laptop. Then, when the laptop arrives in shop due to a battery issue, you can do the log again and compare with what was at the time of sale. What has just jumped into my mind: you can perform a cells test and you can provide warranty for the battery based on the internal resistance. If the cells are very good you can provide even 6-12 months warranty, if the cells are poor you can provide 3-6 months warranty.

      I can tell you from my experience. I had several batteries stored for a long time. The cells got over discharged but PF flag was not set. The laptop didn't recognize them. Then by applying a special voltage patterns the batteries get alive. You can do this trick manually paying with "Set Output Voltage" in Battery Information tab.

    Not impressed at all by this product or Nicosor who is trying to get you to buy his annual fee of +- 300$ USD for a private owner who would repair maybe 10 batteries a year, so not worth it. I bought it, waited over 2 months to see if Nicosor would abide by my request to sell resets by usage, but to no avail. You have to buy the yearly license if you want to be able to reset some batteries. Moreover, don't forget you are bypassing the protection circuit from engineers at HP, Lenovo, Dell, etc. which are way more competent than Nicosor. So if you want to burn your house down, buy this and buy the license. In any event, it can only reset approx 1 on 20 batteries, so if you don't repair industrial numbers of batteries, this thing is useless. I put it in my spare parts bin. Sorin, I am suprised you don't tell the whole story, probably because Nicosor gave you the tool and the yearly license. How free gifts can twart someone's judgement.

    Wonderfully done, and very happy about this tool. I only do diagnostic and repair at my shop, but this would still be worth it just for diagnostics.
    If you have some spare time, could you do a short follow-up video showing the use on an internal laptop battery, and the "generic" method in the manual to identify unknown pin-outs?
    This last part, and not knowing, is the only thing keeping me from making the purchase.

      To identify the clock and data on the battery connetor you can check the internal zenner diodes connected on clock and data lines using a multimiter.

    You can even serve some walk-in customers to check their batteries and perhaps print out some data document/graph for a small charge. I just bought a replacement battery for my laptop and it lasts only about 30-40 minutes, disappointing. Deffinitely not 5200 mAh. If I would have some visual proof I would claim my money back.
