Very good video update on the new Mercedes Benz S Class 580. You expressed reservations over the interior design lack of control knobs, specifically a need targeted for older generations who drive the S Class model. The older generation did not grow-up in the contemporary technology age. The new S Class interior design sets the trend for the coming decade, a period when current drivers become a dying breed. As a septuagenarian baby boomer myself, I was fortunate to integrate technology into my lifestyle due to work and to other mandated needs. Steve Jobs taught us that we no longer needed knobs, switches and buttons. MotoMan, get with the current times! Mercedes is preparing the new S Class interior design for subsequent generations to come. These drivers grew up in the age-of-technology in the absence of buttons, knobs and switches that all of them would find antiquated and unorthodox in a 21st century Mercedes S Class.
Totally agree with you - any buttons re frequently used or ANY safety related button should be real old school controls and not haptic / touch screen etc which are dangerous to use when driving........
3:32 Correction: the transmission is not a torque converter, but a dual clutch that they refer to as multiclutch because it does not operate in the same way as a DSG or PDK for example, which have one clutch for even numbered gears and one for odd numbered gears to provide quick shifts. Both clutches are in fact working together on all gears to ensure smoother shifts but also slightly quicker shifts than a conventional automatic. So its kind of the best of both worlds.

I have sat in the new S Class and played around with it for a bit. I actually don't mind the steering wheel controls at all. Those work just fine. Why even change those? They worked just fine in the old model and I did not like the feeling of pressing one thing and the whole array of "buttons" move since it is essentially just one big button with multiple touch points on it.

You are correct. It's because the 48V mild-hybrid systems completely get rid of the serpentine belt and all the accessories that it powers. If you've ever replaced a serpentine belt you know what I'm talking about. Now, with 48V technology, you can get rid of all the items that were powered by mechanical energy with a 48V power supply. Re: "thousands of start-stops," it's because of the new location for the starter motor. Remember it's now integrated between the engine and the transmission so you are engaging the engine directly (again, with the powerful 48V motor) instead of a 12V starter motor that is weak and pathetic in comparison. In sum, fewer moving parts, and the parts that are left are stronger.

As a long time mechanic i can tell you that it won’t be any more or less reliable, this is what it will mean. 1 you’ll never need to replace the acc. Drive belt ( serpentine) which is a $50 R&R once every 5 yrs.. 2. A $200 water pump will be well north of a $1k. In a nutshell, it will save you $50 on a belt every 5 yrs. and triple your repair bills. To be fair, you can change the driving mode and most other settings with your steering wheel buttons without looking at the center screen. You can also have voice control in this car, which will do anything you ask without touching a single thing. If you don't know all the ways how you can operate the car, you shouldn't criticize it. That said, I'm not a big fan of the screens either. The center one is alright, but the way its implemented looks so weird. The black center console part looks so cheap somehow. The worst is the driver screen though. It's not integrated at all, which for a luxury car is pretty disappointing.
You're absolutely right about the UX, M. The deal breaker for me is the center console. I'm content with the dashboard because it's as practical as it can be but for lack of a better phrase, the center console is annoying! It's like leaving the office and going into another office. I hope they change it. I would seriously consider paying the extra 300K for a Bentley Flying Spur with the V8 Porsche engine, but since I can't, I would look to see what the BMW seven and eight series have to offer before this S Class. Maybe AMG will have a retro interior and not install the Tesla console or something? Maybe get a coupe before they digitize that as well...!?

I'm afraid I find the large digital displays look cheap as chips with very little design effort made to integrate them into the overall cabin. Just looks awful plus the comments you and other reviewers have made about this car, even the new Golf verging on being unsafe to adjust controls with only touch screens and haptics. I wonder if the design A Teams have all been allocated to the forthcoming electric vehicles and the models with ICEs will be left to wither on the vine.
Nice into, almost like Mercedes themselves wrote it. But you didn't list one single thing that makes this car worthy of it, nothing about it will define the sector for a decade, there's nothing new worth mentioning in it. It's the same old s with a slight refresh. Eqs got the money. This car is just a dud, a nice dud, but it's not a new a class
All the tech is screen's and bs hell 4 wheel drive been around for years Honda and Nissan was the first to do that Honda was the first if not mistaken on the Prelude come now the design it's a big CLA now and the interior is straight up Tesla with better execution and materials so yeah for forging the future it's a nice car but I think it's a little over hyped still nice but yeah
Perhaps you mean 4 wheel steering?? Mazda unveiled it in 1983 in their MX-02 concept car but Honda was first to market in the 1988 Prelude Si followed almost immediately by Mazda in their 1988 626& MX6 Turbo
I am both a car guy and a musician. What car interfaces are going through is exactly what happened 10 years ago in electronic music. The synthesizer designers became enamored of what could be done on a screen. But it turned out that this did not translate into a more playable instrument. The musicians (think drivers here) started to demand and buy instruments that followed the ethos of “one function - one knob”. It completely changed the way instruments are designed. Now, only the cheapest instruments use screen interface technology. The high end (and more playable) instruments are “one function - one knob”. Mercedes needs to think about this history. Soon, only Yugos (or their equivalent) will have touchscreen only haptic interfaces. Yeah, its cheaper to produce. But I personally would never buy a car with this degree of cost-saving touch screen user interface. These cars will lose value quickly due to this sad design choice.

#perfection
The engine has the same components as the amg V8 just not hand built
Not much difference in acceleration bt this and S500 with inline6 engine.
20% difference in fuel consumption.
Imagine the diesels in Europe then. Cruising at 160-180km/h at 7-8l/100km.
Lol! Such a new idea for the car industry.... Knobs!
Can’t you just say
“Mercedes switch to sport plus”
As stated in the episode, voice is not there yet to make rely on it yet.
Lol and everyone talks about Lexus RTI
The deal breaker for me is the center console. I'm content with the dashboard because it's as practical as it can be but for lack of a better phrase, the center console is annoying! It's like leaving the office and going into another office.
I hope they change it. I would seriously consider paying the extra 300K for a Bentley Flying Spur with the V8 Porsche engine, but since I can't, I would look to see what the BMW seven and eight series have to offer before this S Class.
Maybe AMG will have a retro interior and not install the Tesla console or something? Maybe get a coupe before they digitize that as well...!?
‘EXTRA 300k’? 4 THE FLYING SPUR?
U DO KNOW THESE S CLASS R LIKE 140?
THE FLYING SPUR IS MAYBE 100k MORE NOT 300K
PHANTOM IS 300K MORE
STOP SPREADING BS
Lexus who?
The model S is an E Class competitor not an S Class one.
Wow she can dance for a such a big barge.
She can!
👍
china has come to take the lead, we feel pride in the china S class elegance, with the euro badge on it, anyway, we will make the hydrogens, so you can order this and teslas so long, and sorry for another confused powertrain, ice and ev have baby
all that piano black. yuck.
Frankly... the lights are ugly... especially the front lights 😒
Pronouncing "Stuttgart" the Swabian way "Schduagert" while speaking American English is very annoying.
Just buy an Audi RS7 and be done with it.
That doesn't compete with the S Class. But the RS7 sure is a sweet car.
I'm afraid I find the large digital displays look cheap as chips with very little design effort made to integrate them into the overall cabin. Just looks awful plus the comments you and other reviewers have made about this car, even the new Golf verging on being unsafe to adjust controls with only touch screens and haptics. I wonder if the design A Teams have all been allocated to the forthcoming electric vehicles and the models with ICEs will be left to wither on the vine.
they screwed up the tail lights for sure. the S class has lost its way
Nice into, almost like Mercedes themselves wrote it. But you didn't list one single thing that makes this car worthy of it, nothing about it will define the sector for a decade, there's nothing new worth mentioning in it. It's the same old s with a slight refresh. Eqs got the money. This car is just a dud, a nice dud, but it's not a new a class
This or the new Tesla Model S Plaid?
they don't compete. The S class is way more luxurious, the Model S is faster and sportier. Both are very high tech.
Straight line acceleration isn't the only factor most people look at.
This is way more comfortable than a Tesla.
Tesla doesn’t produce luxury cars. It’s not a comparison.
Interior looks nothing like a Tesla.
Steve . . . Excellent analogy!
hmm, here I was falling asleep during the vid, it's been a long day, I say to myself. Flick to esysman and his Gate Crashing the Mille Miglia and I realise its the S class thats so boring it sent me off to lala land.
Knobs must be brought back at least for safety reasons! Other is that in this review we can see disgusting dirty and greasy screen, not classy!
thank you my e class is better
