My dogs did not have a routine: we are not routine-bound people, yet they settled in with no problems at all. Strong leadership is definitely needed, but in our case it was firm, without us becoming irritated or showing frustration.
My dogs did not drool: not one of them and not once.
We had a general dealer shop in a rural area, so that we had a few regular customers, but mostly strangers, coming in. When my wife was in the shop, she had between four and six of our bullmastiffs under her feet. Nobody would dare try anything with her. They took no notice of the comings and goings of our customers. As long as "mommy" was calm, so were they. One or two of the dogs would lie out on the veranda, with people passing them by as they entered the shop. The dog would not even raise its head - and especially not if one of the resident lizards was preying on the flies that landed on it.
The local police and local clients were well acquainted with our dogs, knowing them to be gentle, soppy giants. Once, when two of my dogs attacked a trouble-maker, he went to report the dogs to the police. They came out to see us, listen to the chain of events and told the man to forget about suing us, as they would stand by us.
Bullmastiffs and their crosses are very easy to train, as long as the owner takes the initiative, makes the dog feel completely at home and does not give ambiguous rules.
Our puppies had a "toy box": a plastic crate into which we put all their "toys". The new puppies were placed in the crate with the toys, shown that they were for playing and never did we have trouble with the puppies grabbing anything that was not theirs. Except for Polar Bear: she had a thing for my wife's shoes. She would "kidnap" them, place them in her bed and treat them as though they were puppies. We fixed that by giving her some ducklings to babysit or baby rabbits to tend. She was broody, that's all.

Spot on! I own a Bullmastiff and you do have to consider a lot of things with these big dogs. Another thing to consider is the type of car you have to transport them to the vet. My wife and I go to extreme lengths for our big boy as he's now getting old. We bought a small 4WD (with a ramp for him to get in) where the back seats can fold all the way down so he can have his head out the window and be able to turn around. Custom built steps so he can get up on the bed with us in morning. A lounge that is low to floor so its easy for him in his old age to get up and watch movies. The biggest doggy door the world has ever seen to keep him out of the elements when we are not home. We have dribble towels around the house to help manage his drool. If he shakes his head drool will get on the ceiling as well as everything else. A lot of effort and money but I wouldn't change a thing. He's weighing in around 80kg and loves to have naps between sleeps.

Our first dog was a bullmastiff. We got her when I was about 8 and I can honestly vouch for what you were saying about not getting them as a first time dog owner. My parents were nervous with her and as a result, she became very unpredictable around dogs so we could never let her off the lead. But other than that, she was so sweet, affectionate and gentle with me and my little sister and we were so devastated when she died years later.
We’ve got a labrador currently and I’m looking at getting experience with other dogs first but I know one day I’d love to have another bullmastiff.

Absolutely right. We have had bullmastiffs and they do not react well to lots of strangers especially all at once. We are very experienced owners of this breed and you simply cannot train a bullmastiff to willingly accept a crowd of people turning up at your door for a party etc. Because they are a natural guardian of their owners they will not understand how to distinguish friend from foe. If you like lots of get togethers then do not buy this breed. I don’t agree with locking dogs away because they don’t suit your lifestyle. I understand that if for example you were having work done at your property you may have to secure your dog but this is the only exception. The bullmastiff is one of the finest family dogs you can own. It will protect all its family members with its life and also be a big baby that want to sit on you sometimes but nearly always want some kind of contact with you like laying on your feet. Thanks for you very informative chanel 👍👍

I need some support. I have acquired an 18 month old bull mastiff. The reason for this is I live on a council estate and my neighbour went and bought a 12 month old dog. The history of this poor dog is not known. He was in Leeds but did not get on with kids. So my neighbour bought him knowing this yet my neighbour had kids. So poor dog put in a new home with kids. He also had an injury not checked by anyone on his leg. Long story short dog ended up biting kids it was more of a warning after being pelted with NERF bullets and also when asleep someone jumped right in front of him, startled him as he was sleeping and he just reacted. Had he wanted to he could have seriously injured but he did not. Then poor boy was seized by police and put in kennels waiting death. No contact. No love. No assessment. Neighbour fought for dog as kids did provoke. Won court case dog returned. After 7 months in jail awaiting euthanasia. Then they had baby but because of this social services got involved and said he can't have dog at home. He had only been freed for four/five weeks. So he asked me if dog could stay with me until matter resolved. Now I am no expert. But am doing my best to help this dog. He is amazing. He gets on with my cats. BUT there have been moments. Any suggestions??? He is a beautiful intact male but has suffered so so much. I am very gentle with him. But he has been hit he expects me to hit him but I am a 5ft 3 woman. I do not hit animals I love horses and have found kindly works better. Now leg is getting sorted with vet tomorrow!! The owner still comes to walk him but wants to get him assessed so he can become the family pet. I do not think he can be a family pet!!! He needs a house with no know kids I think. He is lovely to kids but something has happened to the poor guy so he gets anxious. Any suggestions would help.

My situation is I live In Spain, Barcelona the city is really cramped even I live on the outskirts of the city but were are a lot of people in the streets parks. I have a few more remote parks I would use for a walks and training, but still, I fancy a pint at the local bar for an hour or so it is usually outside bars, with a table and chairs next to the park area or a sidewalk. I would love to take my dog along with me. I'm woriing the mastiff type of bread, may attack waitress or someone coming to chat or take an order, You may ask why I need a guard dog because here we have big problems with OCUPAS and house buglers, I'm a single person working from 9 am to 5 pm and I'm really worried about leaving my flat alone.

Colette Philcox the stubbornness is a real problem with tablets (and he’s not food driven). Ham, pate, cheese, prosciutto ham, smoked salmon, regular dog food, grinding it into milk - I think we’ve tried everything. If he has the slightest suspicion that a tablet is involved, he will carefully inspect the offending treat, sniffing thoroughly and then reject it.

Right now mine is good with our kids but at around 4 months he definitely still in that puppy stage so he can get a little wild so we need to keep a close eye but once he gets older im sure he will be great! They are supposed to be so calm as adults

He’s fine when he’s tired he just wants to snuggle but when he’s up during the day he bites our hands and he bites any lose clothing what’s causing this behaviour? He’s a very smart guy too we’re taking him to get professional trained soon but everything’s been set back since the pandemic, just wondering what you think we could do in the meantime? telling him “no biting” sternly doesn’t seem to work either.

p.s.' Bull Mastiff puppies like any puppies are just hard to get past that puppy house breaking stage and bull mastiff love to chew up anything especially if left alone for any period of time! Our bull mastiff pup ripped up the linoleum floor in our bathroom just to have something to do but worst of all Bull Mastiff's will head butt doors to get through them and this truly is a problem sometimes because of their size because a bull will absolutely put their heads through a door panel if left in a bathroom while you go out so best to put them in a laundry room or better yet back yard if you must leave them alone to go out for any amount of time! I had a dog once that chewed up the garden hose all day so . . . . puppies are just destructive when cutting teeth so nothing you can really do about it until they grow out of that stage except give them constant supervision!

I had a females bullmastiff, she and I jogged 5 miles at least once a week, she lived 13 years. Yet, my two males could not jog more than 2 miles before over heating, it is a weight issue. Overall a female bullmastiff has more endurance and is more athletics than a male. A obedience trained bullmastiff can be taken anywhere. Yet, avoid environments where there is a lot of noise pollution; their hearing is very acute.

I don't agree with all of this.
Everyone who has a Mastiff has been a first time owner at some point, that statement makes absolutely zero sense!!!
I've had a few and every single one has been an amazing dog.
I have a German Shepherd and just taken on an 11 month old Mastiff. After him being over playful and trying to mouth I had him lay down, he done that in two steps from sitting to down.
While trying to play with my GSD again I pulled him onto his side. He tried to get up until I placed a hand on his tummy and hand on his neck. He did squirm but stopped and lay still after a few seconds. After doing this a few times and petting him as he settled he got the message.
He is an absolutely lovely boy and will be great after some work on his walking and listening.
A few hours in and my wife was settling him easily.
As for slavers, a mastiff does not slaver all the time. They do when there is food, if they have just drank water or they are hot.
Definitely not a constant issue. Keep some kitchen roll handy if your worried.
Under one week of having him and he is chilled unless he wants to play ball outside.
He follows my eight year old all the time and in that protection mode with her whenever she leaves the room.
On one note I have always had large dogs and mainly German Shepherds although a few Mastiffs. One thing I'd say is you do need to be the boss or they will walk you 😁.
Definitely not for someone used to handbag dogs.
In all they are one amazing breed of dog, I can not fault them for personality or the love they give you in return.

  • @hakanbjrnson124
    @hakanbjrnson124 ปีที่แล้ว

Shame. I think the laziness is a dealbreaker for me. I work outdoors and as long as I could socialise the dog to get on with my colleague's neurotic collie, I could have my dog with me throughout the day. Which is perfect for me because I want to be hands on in terms of socialising and discipline. But I need a dog that can spend 8 straight hours outdoors, all seasons, and clock maybe 2 hours or so of walking between worksites during that time.
Bullmastiff might be too big for me too. You give a 40, 50 kilo dog that level of activity, and they're going to need almost as much food as you. That's gonna get expensive.

Most guard dogs people say don’t get if you’re are a first time owner. It’s like then wtf never get a guard dog then. I think that is the dumbest thing to say. If you decide to get one of those dogs just get the dog some training and educate yourself.

It's more along the lines of new first time owners make a ton of mistakes. It's easier to make mistakes with small or medium dogs, but not with a large mastiff or other guardian breeds. I'd say own 2-5 dogs first then get a gaurd dog. So it's like learning on a manual but eventually owning an automatic

Lazy, no, not if you are active, but if you sit around all day, they will do that as well. Just get up, he will follow, they can't stand missing out! But Bull Mastiff are very laid back couch potato's so no they do not care for loud amped up people very much but their patience is legendary so I would surmise that this guys personality is why he clashed with a laid back bull mastiff NOT because the bull mastiff has the problem, it would be his loud personality in my opinion.
Yes bull mastiffs like attention but what dog does not really? So this guy needs an amped up dog like himself because he is just not a laid back dude!
