EXCELLENT video. Not only do you show it being checked, but you actually TEACH us how to check for ourselves. I wish all youtube car videos were like this. Thank you for making it.

I have had my forerunner at a certified Toyota mechanic shop. for at least four years similar situation and no one can tell me exactly what’s going on. Your video has been great and explaining and diagnosing the misfire. I now can’t wait to try it out thank you so much.
Thank You SO MUCH! I was able to narrow it down to a bad spark plug in cylinder 3. I replaced all 4 spark plugs for 20$ and runs great! Saved my mom money by not bringing it to a shop. THANKS AGAIN!
There is a leak in the middle cylinder coil boot. High kv under load induces the spark to go to ground via the spark plug port. No load kv at idle will allow current to flow through the spark plug. I would love to work with guys like this. Great video I'm sure this will help a lot of newbies.
Really nice video I think you showed us that we really may not even have to use the paper clip trick at all since by pulling out each core individually gave us indication of spark and yet did not indicate which cylinder was mis-firing until you raised the core itself. Simple enough for me. Thank you much, Keep up the great work!
@@realfixesrealfast i literally just used this method to fix my neighbors buick park avenue. It was running really pporly and by doing this I discovered that it was only running on 4 cylinders. Thanks again!
Thank you very much for the videos. presented in a logical and realistic way. i like how you use customers vehicles for the repairs, can't get more real than that, real world situations.
Man I love these videos where we have to guess what the problem is!! It makes it so much more interesting! Duane you are a true professional and I can tell you love what you do. :]
You gave me a good lead on how to fix my issue. I started per your video but also placed a timing light at the end of each wire by the plug and found on wire was bad. Replaced wire and runs as smooth as new. Thanks for posting.
Great demonstration of logical troubleshooting 👍 . I believe the cause of the misfire to be one of the two plugs fed from the center coil which was not contributing under load. It is possible that maybe the center coil is breaking down under load - however when you lifted the center coil out of the spark plug well - it appeared to have a good spark jumping / arcing from the spark plug boot - so I am thinking that maybe the center coil is still good. 👍🧐✌️✌️
Thank you so much it really helps me out i hade the same problem with my car take it to 3 mechanics and none of them told me what was the problem they just told me to take to the dealer cus they couldn't find nothing so after a couple of videos i finally found wht was the problem thanks to you i save a lot money
EXCELLENT instructive procedure for spark wire coil and plug diagnosis. the ONLY flaw in the whole video is your statement that spark is coming UP from the bottom of the plug. It is not, it is coming DOWN the wire TO the plug FROM the coil and choosing the apparent path of LEAST resistance and going down the side of the plug in the carbon filled crack to get to ground where the plug screws in to the head. So it does not come UP FROM the ground point it comes DOWN from the coil Voltage travels + to - not the other way around.... But needless to say that changes nothing if someone does not know that it will not hinder the purpose of this video in any way anyway. Absolutely fantastic video other than that pick at you point well done. I am a Mobile Tech been doing it since 1994 i actually helped a customer avoid spending money with me and CURE his 1997 3.4 toyota misfire with THIS video as his aid (send him the address) so again, great job thanks much.
When you shorted the ground wire the flame was the same size on each. As you pointed out, if a wire is bad the flame would be bigger, because of more resistance in the natural pathway through both plugs on that circuit. If either plug was bad, I would expect a bigger flame as well, for the same reason. So, those of you who say it's a bad plug are ignoring that part of the evidence. Of course, inspect the plugs, but I think it's something else.
Man. My hemi is misfire crazy with zero codes. New motor. New plugs. Old coils. Runs great. Only misfires under load around 3k rpms. This makes me think i have a bad coil. Gonna test them like this. Thank you.
I'm surprised that you can pull the coil pack off while running without ruining it. Looks like a good diagnosing option if it doesn't cause internal short with the pack being ungrounded.
could be the coil, but really could be the wire as I found in my problem with a 2000 Chrysler Intrepid. I did the same but then switched the coil on the misfire with a coil from one that was firing to see if it was in fact the coil, but all coils on that side worked.
You could swap the coil pack to see if the trouble followed to another cylinder, and if it does... coil pack, if it doesn't... spark plug. Great video illustrating basic/advanced troubleshooting skills! I think I'll subscribe!
coil 2/middle, under no load or just on idle still was firing when you pulled the s.p.boot allthe way out.....i am thinking bad s,plug or coil is failing under load...hence need coil. you guys are a big help,,,,thanks joe boston ma
I would swap the coil pack in the middle with any one on the out side, if the misfire go to the outer cylinders then I could say it is the coil pack that is defective. However, if it remains in the middle cylinder then I would conclude that the spark plug is defective.
hello, i read this and agree with you. however, i have an annoying one. what if after concluding that the plug is bad, you replaced the plug on the bad cylinder just to find the misfire still remains at the exact same cylinder. would you suspect that cylinder to havr a bad compression or a bad PCM??
Thanks!!! for share your experience! I did have a problem with one coil in my Hyundai, I did the test only to a normal speed; I could not find the one that did not work. You help me to find it out the one that is not working!🙂🏆🏆🏆
Thanks so far. Number 8 when under a load seems to run good but idle and to 30 miles an hour smooth out. Engine light will not go off so no tag Mike chattanooga
Video wont play, so i dont know what you showed, but just unplug the coil packs 1 at a time. When it runs the same ( 2 dead cylinders is easy to tell ) thats the issue cylinder. Whether its a coil pack, plug or low compression, youll have the right cylinder to start with.
I want to say bad / dirty injector, or bad valve(s) on that cylinder. Need more tests to confirm. ( Compression test that cylinder to determine if its a valve) Great Videos, Great work... Keep Them comming! Like to be always thinking!
it is Spark plug OR the walls of the coil are leaking sparks to the cranckcase when in place. You could just use a spark plug wire from the coil to the spark plug and see if the same occour when you take off the wire from the plug, if it does de same it´s the plug and if doesnt its the coild itself leaking sparks when in place.
I have a ford e150 5.8 very smooth until held steady 35/45 then slight missing. New ignition control module plugs wires distributor. Very smooth until high gear.
Well the second coil produces spark as we saw, even though the engine slowed when it was removed. Could be spark plug or worse a badly seating valve which is causing a lack of compression when under load.
The next thing I would do is check the spark plug visually for that hole, then I would swap the coils from another cylinder and see if misfire follows the suspect coil. if misfire stayed put then I would run a compression test, if that was good I would ck the fuel injector. after I found and repaired the misfire I would investigate why it did not show any misfires on scan tool, possible crank sensor prob?
Very important .. As a pseudo mechanic.. I cut tip of boot off as far as I felt safe. To get them to snap on. And thus began firing my spark plugs. On the side where I felt that catalytic had melted down. Or became a second sun..
Very old school would call for a coil replacement. I once had a bad coil on a 1959 triumph motorcycle. I found myself driving into eagle pass, TX to a general store and bought some birthday candles and a roll of electrical tape. Meled candle wax into the hole and wrapped in electrical tape and the bike ran very nicely after that. Back in the 60's thats all there was to eagle pass.
is an excellent video!!! I have 2001 Aurora and the coils are not as other vehicles how do I test for a bad coil on a Oldsmobile Aurora, I really like your paper clip idea, jet, I can't really use that idea on my Aurora, so! how do I even test for a spark? thanks.
