- Kate and I are back to share the 10 things we love about life in France! Life in Paris as an expat has its ups and downs, but there are and always will be things that France does better than the US or NZ!
For example, Rosie, who has been living in France as a foreigner for more than 4 years now, adores the TGV and the paid leave. And when it comes to living in France vs USA, there are some things that France does best in the world, like the French social security system which changed Kate's life whilst living in France as an American.

I love Universal health care, the French Securité Sociale. When my godson, a simple chef in a restaurant, fell sick on 2014 of a medular aplasia, a disease that kills you in the States if you have not a premium insurance, in Mexico you're simply a dead man, the French Social Security did not hesitate one second to hospitalize him for three months including two months of sterile room as he had an immunosuppressive treatment with lots of transfusions. He healed and now in 2018 he going well. How much would cost such a treatment in the States? How many people could afford such a treatment in the States?
Another example. in 1966, yes 1966, the mother of a friend of mine had an open heart surgery with replacement of the mitral valve done by the French Securité Sociale. On 1966 that was pioneering surgery. She is always alive and kicking at 80 years old. These people were very modest blue collars, Portuguese immigrants who arrived in 1964...
The values of the French Republic Liberty, Equality, Fraternity mean that nobody is left behind or without care. Solidarity, a value shared with some other european countries of social christian and social democrat traditions.
Interesting how people overlook the fact that Frances system rations care or the fact the health care is deeply in the red financially and is not sustainable. They could be stubborn and deny any fixes and latter collapse the system or they can increase taxes to fix it. Guess which one they currently are doing?

Or maybe you think that is moral that USA citizens die like stray dogs with no care because they have not money.
A good measure of the health and health system in a country is life expectancy. The measure of the efficiency of a health system is the comparison between life expectancy and the percentage of the health expenditures on the GDP.
USA. No universal care. Life expectancy 80.3 years. Health expenditures 17.3% of the GDP.
France and most European countries universal care, life expectancy around 82.2 years. Health expenditures between 10 to 12 % of the GDP.
So the European countries have a better life expectancy while spending 40 % less in percentage of the GDP.
As the USA's GDP per capita is almost twice of those of most European countries, that means that the Europeans spend in health almost 3 times less than the Americans in dollars for their health while living longer...
Besides no West European ends ruined or has to sell his possessions because he or a member of his family is sick.
And none dies like a stray dog because the health insurance does not want to cover the disease.
It's just morality...
There is another interesting comparison, between two countries:
One extremely rich, the other a third world one (and not communist nor left wing).
USA No universal care. Life expectancy 80.3 years. The GDP (PPP) per capita is 63051 USD. Health expenditures 17.2 % of the GDP.
Costa Rica Universal care since 1941. Life expectancy 79.2 years. The GDP (PPP) per capita is 18651 USD. Health expenditures 7.3 % of the GDP.
That shows the extreme inefficiency of the American way of health as a poor country obtains almost as a good result while spending a percentage of the GDP less than the half of the States.
In dollars that becomes a total shame for the USA.
Each tico spends 1305 USD/years for living 79 years while each american spends 10844 USD/year for living just 1 year more.
NOTA All the ciphers are from the CIA Fact book, not from a communist agency.
So think a bit over that. And ask you some questions about the american system of health.
@@RS-ls7mm Another fact in the States West Virginia has the lowest life expectancy with 74.4 years, just a bit better than Mexico and a bit lower than Iran...And some counties have life expectancies similar to African countries... Is that normal in a country like the States. Is that moral or christian?

Just pointing out that no system is without issues.If you think people die in the streets in the US because they can't pay then you have been watching too much TV. Healthcare is free for any emergency, free over age 65 and free if you are poor (thanks to Obamacare, however Obamacare really screwed the middle class, the middle class way more than a fair share).
C'est vrai que ces vidéos me rendent fière d'être française. Nous avons pleins de défauts c'est vrai, mais il y a tellement de choses merveilleuses à coté que je sais que j'ai de la chance de vivre dans ce pays (paysage, nourriture, sécurité, facilité...) Merci pour ce rappel!
Moi je suis français, je suis chauvin, et je suis fier de l'être. Porter une plus grande estime pour son propre pays que pour les autres ou au moins la plupart des autres est une attitude tout à fait logique à mon avis. Vouloir ne voir dans chaque pays et chaque culture que des égaux, quand bien même ce serait vrai dans l'absolu, ne sert à rien. C'est comme regarder un championnat de foot et de décider que toutes les équipes méritent la coupe... c'est absurde et inutile, alors qu'il est parfaitement normal et sain d'avoir une équipe favorite qu'on encourage et qu'on espère voir gagner parce qu'on la considère plus méritante que les autres.
De plus, je n'aime pas cette attitude qui me semble malheureusement très à la mode en France en ce moment, et qui consiste à trouver des raisons de culpabiliser d'être français, pour telle ou telle raison d'ordre social, ou historique, ou culturel, etc. Cette attitude ne risque pas de nous faire avancer beaucoup, et serait même plutôt destructrice sur le long terme.
Allez, vive la France! (et merde pour le roi d'Angleterre...)

Je dois admettre que j'ai utilisé le mot "chauvin" là où j'aurais plutôt dû écrire "patriote", mais quant au reste de ton développement... hallucinant!!!
J'espère sincèrement pour toi que tu n'es pas dans la vraie vie comme à l'écrit! Tu prétends pouvoir me juger à partir de ce que tu as lu, décidant quasiment arbitrairement (oui, car tu ne te bases que sur quelques dizaines de mots, autant dire pratiquement rien, pour me juger tout entier) que je n'ai pas dépassé le stade du lycée en terme d'enseignement, que je n'ai jamais été à l'étranger, que je suis égocentrique, imbécile, ignare, borné, con, ... Tu es clairement le genre de personne avec qui on ne peut pas discuter. Vu la manière dont tu te ramènes pour t'appliquer à broyer tel un bulldozer tout ce qui dans le paysage des commentaires ne te plaît pas, et en insultant tes interlocuteurs au passage, je pense que la définition du mot "discussion" n'est pas de celles que tu connais; alors avant de m'apprendre la définition du chauvinisme, va relire celle-là.
Essayer de débattre avec toi ce serait comme tenter de jouer aux échecs contre un pigeon: le volatile va renverser toutes les pièces de l'échiquier, chier sur le damier, et se pavaner fièrement comme s'il avait gagné. Alors je ne vais pas me fatiguer davantage pour toi et je vais cesser de répondre à partir de maintenant. Je te laisse ramasser les pièces et laver le damier (après tout, ce n'est pas moi qui ai sali le champ de bataille).
Pour terminer, je tiens juste à préciser s'il en était besoin que l'avis qui était le fond de mon commentaire (et à côté duquel tu sembles être passé, te contentant de t'acharner sur une bête erreur de vocabulaire) reste inchangé: la France est pour moi le meilleur pays du monde (ce qui ne signifie absolument pas, comme tu le laissais entendre, que je considère les autres pays comme de la merde ou qu'en estimant la France je les rabaisse, ou encore que je pense que tous devraient vénérer la France; au contraire, j'attendrais d'un anglais qu'il soit fier de l'Angleterre, d'un russe qu'il soir fier de la Russie, et d'un japonais qu'il soit fier du Japon, et peu m'importe leur sentiment sur mon pays tant qu'eux ne m'empêchent pas d'en être fier).

@@levrainicolas687 Comparer des cultures comme comparer des équipes de foot, c'est franchement un peu réducteur, autant pour ma part je serais toujours supporter de la France dans une COMPETITION sportive, autant face à une culture étrangère, même si je suis fier d’être français, je ne vais absolument pas investir la relation comme un match dans lequel je devrais automatiquement considérer que mon coté soit le meilleur.
N'est-ce pas plutôt plus intéressant, tout en restant très attaché à ses propres valeurs et en les défendant, d'investir les contacts avec les étrangers comme des occasions de s'enrichir en comparant, en relativisant, et en reconnaissant, (même si on préfère le garder pour soi), que si on se considère comme mieux lotis, (et pas meilleurs) en France, de nombreuses choses sont souvent aussi bien traitées ailleurs voire mieux que chez nous.
@@raphaelnassitti7161 L'exemple choisi (équipes de foot) n'était peut-être pas le meilleur, d'accord. Un peu tout le monde semble vouloir s'attaquer a ce que j'ai dit dans sa forme. Mais je ne reviendrai pas sur le fond: je trouve normal d'avoir une préférence pour son pays / sa culture d'origine.
Pour le reste, je suis d'accord avec toi, et il est profitable pour tout le monde d'échanger et de partager plutôt que de rester dans son coin.

Tout comme il est parfois profitable de s'opposer aux autres dans un esprit de compétition (et oui, il y a des pays meilleurs que d'autres dans certains domaines, et il y a de quoi être fier de ce que son pays fait de mieux). Par exemple, je n'imagine pas un suisse qui laisserait dire qu'un autre pays que le sien fabrique le meilleur chocolat ou produit les meilleurs horlogers. Et ça ne ferait pas de lui quelqu'un de chauvin pour autant.

Agreed, the food in France is so good! I love that it is food, plain and simple and that there seems to be fewer additives than in the US.

My husband is French and we currently live in the U.S. We just returned home from my very first trip to visit his family on France. We visited Lille, Le Mans, Paris and went skiing. The trip was amazing and I absolutely fell in love with everything about France. I’ve loved watching your channel and learning things from you! I would absolutely LOVE to move to France!

Tgv is cool. On râle mais c'est vraiment bien.
C'est vrais qu'avec un peut de recul, on a un train qui va a 300km/h dans un pays de 1000km (de long en large à peut près). Et c’est la qu'on ce dit "ah en faite on peut vraiment aller partout rapidement :O !"
Le TGV est utile mais ennuyeux à mourir. Je donne tous les TGV pour un Corail. Paris Marseille via Clermont-Ferrand (le Cévenol) c'est juste magique. Il
faut l'avoir fait au moins une fois dans sa vie pour comprendre. J'ai aussi pas mal fait Paris-Béziers via Clermont (l'Aubrac), c'est au moins aussi bien.
C'est bien quand TOUS les sanitaires sont utlisables.
Je viens de découvrir vos vidéos, et ça fait du bien de voir votre enthousiasme pour la france et les français. Jamais de jugement, et toujours en essayant de comprendre notre état d'esprit !

There are so many things I love about France... taking the train, for example; whether it's from Paris to Moulins.... or Lille to Nantes... or even the TVG from Paris Bercy to Charles De Gaulle airport. It's usually very relaxing as well as affordable, so that's a double win.

France is not a socialiste country, when American will understand that social awareness is not socialism, social democracy and socialism are two very different things
dou40006 France isn't socialist anymore. But there is nothing wrong to be socialist. What Americans needs to understand is socialism is really different from communism. You can be socialist with a capitalistic economy
homasas Actually no. If you read the communist manifesto someday you will see that Marx defines socialism as an anti-capitalist doctrine. Care about each other is just a normal human behaviour that even a capitalist state can do but you can't be a socialist country with a capitalist economy.
Not really no, sorry, or not in the marxist sense of socialist. As said above, France and many european countries are social democracies, a democracy where the capitalist economy is balanced with social welfare and wealth redistribution through revenue taxes. (sorry for the fake school teacher tone)

No! It is not because we had president coming from a party who called himself socialist that it makes the country socialist. Socialism is a doctrine that reject the free market economy and own the production system. That’s not the case in France even if we have some public service.

Being away from my city, I'd say the things that I miss are my Biocoop and local organic farmers, supermarkets with not too expensive organic food in general, the landscapes (city/countryside/forest/mountains), the bread (baguettes ❤) and the free museums.
I did an exchange in Corsica and it was hands down the most beautiful place I've ever been. They have everything you could imagine there from swimming in mountain streams to beautiful beaches and reefs just ugh I hate that you had to remind me how much I miss it

Je suis d'accord que la Corse a plus d'autonomie mais la Corse n'est pas un pays souverain. Elle appartient toujours à la France; plus que les territoires d'outre-mer de la France, mais moins que les régions. C'est une collectivité territoriale française.

The part about how the french healthcare impacts positively our general feeling is really important, thank you for sharing that.
The universal healthcare (even for undocumented immigrants !) not only protects everyone, but also allows people not to live in fear of cancer, or whatever their insurance might not cover if they lived in an other country.

Pas la première fois que j'entends dans les vidéos de la chaîne que la France est "a socialist country"... Et j'avoue que ça me fait systématiquement sourire ! x'D
C'est bien plus compliqué que ça et il ne faut surtout pas confondre avancées sociales - même si elles ont pu être obtenues grâce à des gouvernements dits de gauche - et système ou pays socialiste... ^_^
Apathik on peut pas vraiment reprocher à une personne provenant du pays le plus anti-communiste/socialiste de ne pas comprendre ce qu'est le socialisme. Depuis tout petit on leur a dit que le socialisme/communisme était le mal incarné, qu'ils ne devaient penser qu'a travailler du matin au soir car ça, contrairement aux utopies chaotiques, ca allait marcher et rendre tout le monde heureux.
C'est un pas un reproche : j'ai bien précisé que ça me faisait sourire, pas que ça me contrariait... ;-)
J'aimerais quand même bien qu'on puisse licencier librement... quitte à augmenter la sécurité (allocation universelle?), qui aurait l'avantage de protéger à la fois les salariés et les indépendants, qui souffrent beaucoup!

Ou peut-être le mode "socalist" n'a-t-il pas tout à fait le même sens que son équivalent français . Après tout, le mot "libéral" chez nous à tendance à désigner un capitalisme dérégulé, alors que dans le monde anglo-saxon il signifie plus ou moins "progressiste".
MERCI les filles,on a souvent l'habitude d'entendre des choses négatives sur la France mais il y'a aussi plein de trucs supers et ça fait du bien d'entendre des expats se rendre compte des avantages de vivre ici.

Peut-être râler est une manière de dire qu'on est exigeant, qu'on aimerait que les choses soient meilleures ,etc.Je viens de Genève et nous avons,nous Genevois, la réputation d'être de grands râleurs !!Résultat: pour beaucoup de points Genève est en avance sur les autres cantons de Suisse !!

I so agree with what you said about the TGV !! I live in Paris because I study there, but my mum has just moved to Bordeaux which is in the southern half of the country, and thanks to the tgv I can be there within 2 hours, which makes it much easier for me ! I go there every two weeks and it's so fast compared to the actuel distance that I'm often taken by surprise by the weather, as there is often between 5 and 10 degrees Celsius of difference haha

In fact we do this distinction between work and life even in compagnies to avoid burn out and stress that can cause a lower productivity

Oh ça va les TER... enfin je sais pas dans quelle région mais en Languedoc-Roussillon ils sont bien et souvent à l'heure. Du moment qu'il y a pas une branche sur les rails !
iave J'ai testé les TER en Languedoc (j'ai la famille à Perpignan) et sur Paris (j'y vis)... Et ça va, franchement! J'ai jamais eu de problèmes dans ces deux coins. Par contre, je sais que certaines régions sont pas mal boudées par la SNCF (qui ne jure que par le TGV), donc bon. :/

Health care is not actually free. Everybody and businesses pay taxes for everybody hoping that not everyone needs medical care at the same time. Even then social security still loses money every year. It is close to 20 billion euros of debt. Same thing for unemployment.

A little delay in the audio at some point but still loved the video. As a french guy that's nice to hear your point of view and be reminded that a lot of things are great in our country. As I'm sure you know now we love to complain about a lot of things and sometimes we really should realize more that we are lucky.

I moved in Canada 2 weeks ago from Toulouse and I miss the food soooo much !!
France is so culturally diverse, I love it. I live in Lyon (south-east near the Alps) and what I love is that the mountains and the sea are at merely 3 hours ride in car, or less than an hour of train. And even going less far than this, 30 km is enough to feel somewhere else !

I love all the videos you do together! I live in the States and don’t have the money to travel but would love to go to France! I have been trying to incorporate some of the things I learned from your channel. I made a vegetable soup purée for dinner the other night. I was inspired after Kate was talking about her MIL saying she should make soup for her husband for a week 😂 my husband did eat, but then ate a bunch of other junk,too! Haha oh well! I would love to see recipe videos or videos of meal time!

I was very struck by what you said about living in France and being able to get to a completely different country so quickly and easily. I live in the UK and it made me realise that we take it for granted here, that I can hop on a train and be in Paris in time for lunch, or take a plane and be in Nice in time for lunch. I guess we don't realise how fortunate we are.

Oh wouah ! I could feel the love both of you have for France. Even thought your channel might be renamed My France/French Love Story. It's teasingly interesting to indulge in your outsider's point of view. I fell in love with France when I left her to live abroad for a long stay - 20 months. When I came back I swore to take any chance to discover and indulge in any aspect of my culture, whether it be gastronomy, wines, lanscape, history or language. Vive la France :)

This video is reminding me why moving to New York permanently was such a great decision. We have historical districts that people use the buildings for law offices and housing. My first law field job was in a building from the 1800’s. MTA takes you all through the Hudson Valley & NYC. Plus we as a state offer 4 weeks PTO or Family Leave by law! I’ve been taking these things for granted lately and I shouldn’t. Self-awareness is 🔑!
Being a french guy studying abroad i can say that having "great food" is not a good thing when we go in another country because we will miss a lot our home country food x)
