I'm a chemist and actually there is a science to how much baking soda you should add to your vinegar. Acids are neutralized (e.g., de-activated) with sodium bicarbonatej (e.g., baking soda) which is why it is often used to treat acid spills. You'll know it has neutralized the acid when the bubbling/fizzing has stopped after you first combine the two in your bowl. Unless you're using an excess of vinegar to baking soda, what you're really doing with the baking soda is using it as an abrasive. But, you're killing your industrial strength vinegar and wasting money. The reason your method is still working is because you're rubbing the lemon, which contains citric acid, onto the glass before you apply the vinegar/baking soda mixture. What I would advise you to do is create a thickened vinegar and use your sponge to apply it to the shower doors the same way you're now doing with the lemon (you can add lemon juice to it if you like the scent.) Measure out about four times as much of thin vinegar as you want to end up with once it's reduced and thickened. Pour the vinegar into a small skillet or saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium to simmer the vinegar. Check the vinegar periodically to maintain a steady simmer, adjusting the heat as necessary. Once the vinegar has reached your desired thickness, remove the vinegar from the heat source when it's just about as thick as you want it -- it will thicken slightly more before it cools. This can take anywhere from a few minutes to about 30 minutes, depending on the starting thickness and the volume of vinegar. Once cool, apply this to your shower door. Let it stand about 15-30 minutes for it to do its job, this time at the fullest strength. While waiting, mix your baking soda with ordinary tap water to create an abrasive paste. Typically 2-3 tablespoons of water to half of a cup of baking soda does the trick. Apply and scrub as you already do and then squeegee everything off! This will work SOOOOOO much better than the results you're currently seeing. Let me know if you try it and what you think!

Can one use these products on shower glass that has been coated? I have doors that were coated by manufacturer & not supposed to use windex on it. I was told dawn & vinegar mix.
My cleaning hack for scum buildup in the shower is oven cleaner...yes oven cleaner..once a month left on for 20 minutes rinse off dry with towel then clean the glass chrome and fixtures with glass cleaner that has ammonia in it. Always clean and shiny. Make sure you open a window. I don't recommend if people have asthma or breathing troubles but I've done this for years and even on plastic/fiber glass tubs and showers. No damage and always clean. I'm free to do another quick chore while waiting for the cleaner to work it's magic, but I need to stress I've always had an extension spray shower head to clean off the oven cleaner, I wouldn't recommend doing this without one it would be to time consuming. I should add that everywhere I've ever lived had hard water. In some places I've actually had to do this 3 or 4 times moving in because the old build up was so bad. I always re-clean before moving in because I'm very OCD about clean, my clean vs. other people's clean are NOT the same.
@@LisaB-lv9if either one. I just use the cheap stuff from the dollar tree because I use it so often. I've used it all though. I find it more practical money wise to use the cheapest because it all contains lye which is doing the dirty work for you.
Shut the door to the shower after you throw a rug or towel to step out on to. Take a small watering can that holds about a quart of water and start at the top to wash it down. The best squeegee is a wide blade that has no metal so it doesn’t scratch and you can also use it on you skin to keep the towels dryer. Mine lives in the shower and the shower walls and tub spout along with the doors are squeezed off after each use. You wont want to use Lysol toilet bowl cleaner or Zep toilet bowl cleaner but the works best in this high limestone water area. I have been using a s fuzzy toilet bowl brush that I can but at Cleaning Ideas to spread my solution. I rub the cleanser across the area until the glass feels smooth and then I rinse it with the watering can. When it is dried off then I spay it with a light mist of Protective Silicone Polish and wipe and buff it with a microfiber cloth ( from AJP Chemicals, Canyon Lake, TX , find it in net about $13 for Qt.) this works even when there is no water softener for the house. I have to do this every week not every month here in the San Antonio, Texas area
Put some Arm & Hammer baking soda in your palm, wet the shower door, wipe the baking soda on, then wipe it off followed by rinse, no elbow grease is needed and no chemical fumes. Works 100%
This sounds just what I need for the soap scum and hard water stains on my shower doors which is HORR-IFIC! I don't have a help mate, so I have to do all the cooking and cleaning. Thanks, Andrea!
Actually the best way to remove soap scum and film is with Bar Keepers Friend which is like Ajax but it is not as abrasive. The secret is the oxalic acid in Bar Keepers Friend that very easily dissolves the film much better than citric acid in lemons. BYW, oxalic acid is natural and made from rhubarb. Oxalic acid is sold in hardware stores as wood bleach for your fences and decks, so you could use the acid with a little baking soda for the cheapest solution.
I use a spray named Kaboom Shower Guard between shower usage to keep the shower walls soap scum free. It cuts down on cleanings. I don't know if there's a Dollar Tree equivalent.
I used to use Kaboom with Oxiclean which was amazing although somewhat toxic needing to have your windows open and the vent turned on. Very easy.....just spray it on blue, leave it for 10-30 minutes depending on how dirty the shower, tub, and glass, then rinse away. It was so easy! But now it does absolutely nothing. I am wondering if they changed the product.
For finishing touch, as I've seen on the other channel, apply windshield washer fluid. That helps to prevent hard water stains to build up again. I personally haven't tried that yet. Lady from that channel used your favorite solution, Andrea - mixture of blue soap Dawn and vinegar. I tried that, but was not completely satisfied with result ; so, I will try your method today. As always, thanks for sharing, Andrea! I watch your videos for inspiration. Trying new methods became a game for me - to be or not to be lol
Thank you for sharing your methods to clean the shower door. I think using natural and biodegradable products are good for the environment. You have fiberglass shower walls and pane, so it’s safe to use vinegar. For those of you who have bathrooms that are tiled with natural stones , be careful to avoid vinegar contacting the surface for longer than a minute :)
@@natasha16612 I normally use castile soap (1 tablespoon and 8 oz water), spray the tiles , wait for 10 minutes, then rinse. If that doesn’t work, try mixing baking soda and toothpaste (and a little water, so it would stick to the tiles), apply to the surface , then use a brush to scrub, and rinse. I keep a window wiper, and wipe off the shower doors, tiles after every time I shower. If you have glass shower door, you can clean them, then apply RainX to prevent mineral build up, so you won’t have to clean them so often ;)
@@TramAiKhanh thanks. What is the proportion for mixing baking soda and tooth paste? My tile in the bathroom is white and I noticed a water stains(deposits) on the tile. It doesn't look nice and shine any more, even though I clean it regularly with bathroom cleaners. Water deposits are still there. That is why I asked you how to get rid of water deposits from the white bathroom tile.
@@natasha16612 Baking soda and toothpaste ratio is about 1:1 (maybe a little more baking soda). However, it would only treat soap scum and whiten the grout lines, not removing hard water stain. For that, I recommend vinegar and baking soda (since you don’t have natural stone), or “Bring it on” product, if vinegar doesn’t cut it. To prevent this (after you clean) , you need to treat the water (installing water softener system), or wipe off excess water after every shower, and clean them once in a while. 🙂
Great advice, but don’t use the green scrubby side of that sponge. It will scratch the glass and metal. Use a pink sponge with white scrubby side which are designed for bathrooms and won’t scratch.
That is awesome! I only use natural products and will be doing your method in my shower! I will look at your playlist to see how to clean shower tiles. I understand that it is not good to use vinegar on grout because it will eventually remove the grout. Thank You!
Use toothpaste and a soft toothbrush on grouting. It won't damage it and it will come up white! For tile, a spray of vinegar and quick rinse with boiling water should do the trick!
Im assuming she means you need vinegar and baking soda but doesn't matter what kind of vinegar you use and the lemon is just for scent so not as important
This is an excellent way to clean the shower and door. I'm wondering if you have any hacks to PREVENT the hard water & soap scum from getting on there. Thanks!😊👍
With over 300 comments I don’t have that much time. I have tried everything. Shower doors was filthy on purchasing the home. In twenty odd years, I have tried everything. The swans once had mold. That is not my problem. The blue haze has never come clean. Shrub free, works a little. Lime away was ok. CLR, the same results. Blue haze remains, always. Looks great while it is still wet. But once it dries it is back. Just tried a vinegar spray. 90% vinegar , 5% water and dawn. 20 minutes later, it is still there. Again while it is wet, I start to think it works. But sadly no effect. I think I will try the razor blade next. Sadly I flipped my doors around frequently so no I believe neither side looks clean. I see great results on you tube. If the name brands don’t work, why keep wasting my time. This is a very old video, so I don’t expect answers…..but maybe another viewer can help. I will try to check back frequently. If I am successful, I will add it.
I haven't cleaned my tub or shower in years! And they look like new! How often do you clean soap scum from the inside of your dish washer? How about from inside your washing machine? Correct, never. The best way to clean soap scum is never get it in the first place. Chunk all your bath soap and only use liquid soap. The main ingredient in bar soap is Sodium tallowate. Sodium tallowate is a true soap made by combining the fatty tissue (or tallow) of animals, such as cattle and sheep, with lye, typically sodium hydroxide". It's pure white animal fat that holds the soap in a clump. It sticks to the tile or tub and water will not run over it. Sits there and the water evaporates and leaves mineral deposits on the fat. Repeat a few times and you have "soap scum". Liquid soap or "detergent" holds oily skin residue in suspension and it washes everything away when you rinse. Just like your clothes or dish washer. Also an added benefit is that your drains will never clog up!!
I was thinking the exact same thing. The lemon is probably the only thing that did anything as the acid will have reacted with the lime scale. I also love being spoken to like a child by yootoobers...
I tried it but it didn't work. Hard water spots still there. The ingredients used are a good idea and may work for lesser deposits. Found a better method: use Kohler cast iron sink cleaner. It contains diatomaceous earth. Or, buy diatomaeous earth and mix with water, vinegar and/or lemon juice. My tiles came out shinny as new.
Acrylic shower door cleaner: an old thick sock or rag saturated with cheap baby oil---then swipe across door and voila!! clean in seconds. If the door is really "fogged" with scum: repeat 1 time more with clean rag/thick sock saturated with baby oil. There is NO rinsing off involved. Upkeep the clear, clean look every few weeks. Works on acrylic sinks too. NO scrubbing or added powders, pastes, etc----just use baby oil.
We just renovated our shower and I'm hoping to nip any residue in the bud. Our new doors have a coating for which the instructions say not to use acidic cleaners. Vinegar and baking soda are basic so they may work, but I will probably skip the acidic lemon. Thanks for your tips!
Just a tip, if you have the coating on your shower, as does my sister on her new and very spendy glass shower doors, DO NOT USE BAKING SODA! Only use a mixture of vinegar and water. We are in the middle of a complete bathroom gut/remodel and I asked about our shower (which will have the same glass with the coating), and the professionals said to only use the vinegar water mix once a week. Spray and wipe clean but in between weekly cleaning you must rinse your shower and squeegee your shower after EACH shower to keep the water and buildup from doing this. You don't want to ruin that coating and that coating helps to repel water spots. And actually, if you get in the habit of doing this, which we've always done in our current bathroom, you won't get that nasty buildup anyways which cuts down on deep cleaning time anyways. We have a handheld shower and its just already a habit to rinse the shower well after each shower and qwick squeegee the water off while still in the shower. Literally only takes a quick extra minute and my shower never needs to be deep cleaned. Personally my motto is touch it once...do it once... why waste extra time deep cleaning when it takes less time to do it right the 1st time.
Not for me. Tried blue dawn concoction and no luck. Going to try this tmrw :) btw she has a video on that blue dawn mix but I haven’t watched it...guessing it’s a fail for her too ;)
This is a bit to much stuff. I only use soap croup sponge like the one we use for the oven in the UK called Brillo and that works perfectly without damage. It also save time.
I had a new shower installed and my contractor mismeasured the door opening. He had to order a new glass panel. So my shower door and one panel are glass from one company and the other panel is from a local glass place. This worked great on the original glass, but the new glass is still covered with water stains. How crazy is that?!??!!? Why would it work great on one piece of glass but not the other?

Can one use these products on shower glass that has been coated? I have doors that were coated by manufacturer & not supposed to use windex on it. I was told dawn & vinegar mix.
Thank you for sharing! How do you make the paste? Baking soda and water or baking soda and vinegar? I can’t find the info
Is this regular easy off in yellow can or fume free in blue can
@@LisaB-lv9if either one.
I will be trying this. My shower door I e scrubbed with all kinds of stuff still water spots. I’ll get some of that vinegar at dt tomm if they have.
I just ended up rubbing some fresh caca all over mine and sprayed it with some water and that seems
to help a little bit.
@@JUDGEME5150 fresh caca? 🤨
@@maxbrandt6 have you ever tried caca??? The stuff is super strong and works wonders.
Hello. Thank you for the video. Will the method work for a bathroom tile?
Vinegar thats what i need. I found lemons and baking soda brilliant
I agree. Bar Keepers Friend makes my shower look brand new. It doesn't even take long to clean.
Worked like a charm.... I am officially a subscriber after this tutorial
Your very pleasant to watch and listen to,,, no nonsense, no dragged out, & getting to the point!!
I use a spray named Kaboom Shower Guard between shower usage to keep the shower walls soap scum free. It cuts down on cleanings. I don't know if there's a Dollar Tree equivalent.
Thanks✨
@@AndreaJean thank you as well. Your research is so helpful.
Thanks very much for sharing this 👍my shower room had got very hard scum for very long time but it’s shining now💪Thanks so so so much 💝
Thank you. The shower doors look great.
Thanks Rocky ✨
@@AndreaJean Update. I used your solution for shower cleaning and it DOES WORK !!! At least 95% is gone ! Thanks again, Andrea!
I would guess "rain x" It beads on your windshield so well, you don't even need your wipers on!
@@kristywhite2112 Yes, it was « Rain X »
Thank you for sharing your methods to clean the shower door. I think using natural and biodegradable products are good for the environment. You have fiberglass shower walls and pane, so it’s safe to use vinegar. For those of you who have bathrooms that are tiled with natural stones , be careful to avoid vinegar contacting the surface for longer than a minute :)
Ohhh! Thanks for the heads up! I have stone!
What would you use for bathroom tile to clean from water stains without damaging the tile? Tile is porcelain, not natural stone. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your recipe for removing shower scum. 😊👍 I love non toxic ingredients. Oh, and I love your nails! 💅🏻 😁
I use Zep spray cleaner. It is amazing. It used to be that I could get it only at Home Depot, but now the Walmart stores in which I shop carry it.
where can I get the Clorox mop? thank you so much
Does this work in Washington DC?
I use the same lemon as the sponge to scrub with the paste with bicarb and vinegar
Thank You!
Thanks Tina ❤️
@@AndreaJean You're welcome, Andrea!
@@TinaRice4 qqq
i heard that too. but “eventually “ meaning how long? is it really that bad if done once a month?
Use toothpaste and a soft toothbrush on grouting. It won't damage it and it will come up white! For tile, a spray of vinegar and quick rinse with boiling water should do the trick!
It’s funny that for each product she introduces, she said “you don’t need it, but it helps” or “you don’t need it, but I use it” 😂😂
Right? Now I don't know what to use since nothing she shows is necessary 🤔
Im assuming she means you need vinegar and baking soda but doesn't matter what kind of vinegar you use and the lemon is just for scent so not as important
How do u clean the shower tracks?
You mentioned this is for busy woman. Is it okay that a bachelor use this valuable info as well? 😜
Super, I put this to working tryout on....cheers
Do you have anything for mold in your shower and on your shower tiles
use toilet bowl cleaner in the grout
This is an excellent way to clean the shower and door. I'm wondering if you have any hacks to PREVENT the hard water & soap scum from getting on there. Thanks!😊👍
Someone mentioned before that turtle wax or rain x but only the wall as it might get very slippery on the floor.
I read somewhere to rub light coat of Vaseline - on walls only of course
Just squeegee off the door after each shower.
Get rinse a roo off amazon attaches to shower head giving u a hose to rinse shower out. So easy
Bar Keepers Friend works also you don't have to mess with the fumes if you get the cream
Hi Andrea. Thanks for the tips! I’m going to try your tips seemed to work better than the Dawn soap and vinegar. Congratulations on your pregnancy.
Thank you so much ❤️
a shower with grout is hard to clean. ill try this.we have hard water stains too.
Thanks Diana ✨
Use an old-or cleaning dedicated toothbrush after applying the paste step and scrub the grout with the toothbrush.
That did great,
but I'll have to stick w/magic eraser, really fast, bad shoulder.
Magic eraser???
Magic eraser is totally toxic.... wear gloves!
Just Lemon/lime juice works perfect for me, without any mixing works super quick.
Do you add anything else to that?? I live at Huntsville, Alabama have bad hard water!!
Great to hear 👍
@@marilynchastain5617 just lemon juice and a sponge, then rainx to prevent the hard water to build up. I also use the squeege every time we shower
Thanks for this video, very helpful 😻
Glad it was helpful!
Baking soda neutralizes acid ...so what does this concoction actually do?
I was thinking the exact same thing. The lemon is probably the only thing that did anything as the acid will have reacted with the lime scale.
I also love being spoken to like a child by yootoobers...

Where can I get the mop from? What is it called? Thank you.
It's from Clorox
Warm vinegar works even better.
Ooh removing soap scum: you know the way to a housewife’s heart!
Ha ha yassss 😋
Love your nails! I’m a cleaning freak, appreciate the helps🤛🏻😘
How much did you measure
Thank you ❤️
Lemon and vinegar have about equal acidic levels
Vinegar is acidic.
Magic eraser works well too.
Thank you, you helping me
Glad to hear that!
what about the dawn & vinegar mixture. thought that was universally known as the best. 😊
Nope, it's not working for me 😅 i'm still searching the right method for my stubborn soap scumb!
Not for me. Tried blue dawn concoction and no luck. Going to try this tmrw :) btw she has a video on that blue dawn mix but I haven’t watched it...guessing it’s a fail for her too ;)
Awesome it's really work 😊
Where do u get this long handle blu brush?
Doesn't vinegar and baking soda cause a huge foaming mess when mixed together? Are. you sure you put vinegar in with the baking soda or water?
Great video thanks!

Will this work for our government?
Can you use bottled lemon juice instead of fresh
Squeeze a lemon into your baking soda mixture. Saves time & works the same!!

This is a bit to much stuff. I only use soap croup sponge like the one we use for the oven in the UK called Brillo and that works perfectly without damage. It also save time.
Omg I will try this…👌
I had a new shower installed and my contractor mismeasured the door opening. He had to order a new glass panel. So my shower door and one panel are glass from one company and the other panel is from a local glass place. This worked great on the original glass, but the new glass is still covered with water stains. How crazy is that?!??!!? Why would it work great on one piece of glass but not the other?
