      The Ash Borer definitely devastated the ash trees but they do make great firewood!

  • @DaleFarrish
    @DaleFarrish ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice job guys. Pretty much all I've cut for the last 7 years is ash. I cut in an 80 acre bush and it's all I can do to keep up with it. I've removed 1000's of trees. I even bought a portable sawmill thinking that I would mill a bunch. I just have no time to mill much so been keeping on with cutting firewood. Now I have neighbours wanting me to clean up their properties but due to falling trees most sites are just too dangerous. I cut my trees as low as I possibly can so that the stumps are flat with the ground so I don't have to worry about hitting them when driving around. Some of the punkier wood will still be salable to boiler guys and you likely won't even need to split it. The fallen trees make such a mess it's nice to have it gone.

    • @rachelpostma4505
      @rachelpostma4505 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dale! Heath always talks about wanting a sawmill too, but like you, the time is a limiting factor.

    • @hardworkingmanoutdoors
      @hardworkingmanoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dale, and yes I’d love a sawmill. But like Phil from @AllenFamilyFirewood said in todays video there’s just not enough time in the day. I plan on trying to sell totes or trailer loads of boiler wood this fall.

    • @DaleFarrish
      @DaleFarrish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hardworkingmanoutdoors I work full time also and work long hours so have to do what I can when I can. I don't buy wood, I cut down trees for all of my firewood and that also takes time and equipment. I also build most of my firewood gear and that takes time too. I build equipment that saves me the most time and effort. I try to plan my firewood yard to make efficient use of my time. From what I see of your operation the biggest time/ effort saver for you both right now is a stand alone conveyor. ( sorry Rachel) I have friends who have been doing firewood for years and as soon as they come to my place and see my setups they just have to go get a conveyor. They save an amazing amount of labor. I have a dozen different conveyors and use 4 or 5 pretty regularly. We hand load all of our splits onto a conveyor into our dump trailers or flat bed truck to ensure nice clean wood. I usually use a Blackscreek firewood conveyor for this. I buy lots of stuff used at auctions but these are pretty reasonable new. Heath, keep looking at the auctions site and find a used grain conveyor as soon as you can.

    • @DaleFarrish
      @DaleFarrish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rachelpostma4505 don't let him buy one. Well at least not yet anyway. Hydraulic ones are very expensive and Non hydraulic ones are just too labor intensive unless you are already set up to do it. I'm a carpenter and thought I would love milling because I could make stuff out of my own milled lumber. Nope, don't like it much at all. Besides that doesn't he have a kitchen to reno?

      I have never run across any on this property. If we do come into contact with any a good cleaning with a wash cloth and Dawn dish soap gets the oil off and stops the rash from forming!

    That looks like a lot of wasted labor why didn't you just take that trailer to the woods and you'd have a loaded one time

    • @hardworkingmanoutdoors
      @hardworkingmanoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      Duane, my trails are no where near big enough to get the dually and or the full size dump trailer back on. We would destroy them. I try to skid a bunch out in the winter but a lot depends on the weather and once hunting season gets close that’s all we use the property for.

    • @hardworkingmanoutdoors
      @hardworkingmanoutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I skid logs out in the winter but right now the ground is too soft. Also our trails are too narrow to get the truck and dump trailer to most locations. So yes it is extra work but part of why we enjoy firewood is the workout we get while making firewood so there are added benefits too.
