I feel like Disney just did not understand Into the Woods at all - they cut half the jokes and played too many of them too seriously

    • @bennettbodnar5531
      @bennettbodnar5531 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

On top of that, and probably due to the continued popularity of Tangled, Disney made the decision to not kill off Rapunzel, which didn't provide The Witch with any emotional catharsis once the movie got to Last Midnight. Also, the deaths of Jack's Mother and the Baker's Wife weren't executed well enough, due to, I presume, the constraints of a PG rating (even though they kept the parts where the Stepmother cuts off the stepsisters' heels and toes, and then birds peck the stepsisters' eyes out 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️)

Both Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd share some problems when transitioned to screen especially with their kid characters. Both Red Riding Hood & Toby are often played by adolescents/adults. That changes a LOT of the meaning of what you see and the songs they sing. It's a conscious choice to make them children and it changes a lot of the vibe. I don't think Disney didn't get that about Into the Woods. I think they were purposely toning it down.

Ikr there was no comedic timing in that film- except for Chris Pine as the Prince he was kind of funny sometimes. The individual performances ranged from passable to great (I really liked Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt) but the pacing and cohesion was off especially without the narrator.

This! Yes - seeing the magic realism gives me hope that he can capture some much needed Oz fantasy to help elevate the story to the screen. And the music sounded beautiful. (Hopefully, Wicked can get a better film pace though - because though I loved Into the Heights, there were a few moments that dragged. Not too badly, but a bit. Still miles ahead of other movie musicals though).

I like when a movie has some recorded singing and some live. Like “Still Hurting” in The Last Five Years movie was live I think and that worked really well, but some of the numbers (most of the numbers) from Les Mis would’ve sounded SO much better if they’d just prerecorded them. I think Into the Woods, The Last Five Years, and In the Heights all blended the live music with pre-recorded music pretty well.

You're absolutely spot on with movie musical trailers. And this has been an issue for years. Even Moulin Rogue (which had like one line sung in its trailer), Sweeney Todd (had the teeny tiniest bit of singing in its trailer), heck even friggin Phantom of the Opera (which is so blatantly gonna be a musical based on the title) the trailer was mostly just dialogue with some of the score in the background, and if there was singing it was just the odd line or two and thats it. It's like they're selling it based on "deep voiced whispered dialogue" to sound more "dramatic". It's strange.....

On the La La Land front, I think it's gotten lost in the narrative partly because of Dear Evan Hanson and Greatest Showman, but Pasek and Paul only wrote the lyrics for La La Land. Justin Hurwitz wrote the music. Hurwitz also wrote the score, which essentially echoes most of the songs so I suspect Pasek and Paul had to work within a certain blue print.

I get what you mean about singing live. I also wonder if singing live for multiple takes means even good singers sound worse than they are. I do have to say I Dreamed a Dream in the cinema felt incredibly raw and real to me and I think part of that was the live singing. (Although I may be alone in thinking that)

Sideways made great videos about why live singing is bad in movie musicals : one about Les Mis and one about Cats 2019 I honestly recommend them (his video about Into the Woods was great too, also snugboy's video is a great explanation as to why the movie doesn't work).
BTW I'm still going through your videos, have you ever watched Crazy Ex-Girlfriend ? It's a great musical TV show about mental health and systemic sexism even if you wanna hit the main characters for a while XD
I generally think before adapting musicals as a movie they should release pro recording of the musicals themselves and only adapt those that would make sense as a movie.
Like Rodgers&Hammerstein's cinderella is a good example (granted it was a telefilm first) but the 1997 version is fairly different from the stage version. They only kept the fairy tale angle and ran with it 100%. And while I love the stage version, the movie is one of my favorite cinderella adaptations ever.
Like Hairspray and Chicago (and even LSofH tho I haven't seen it in a while so I feel less confident about it), they used the movie format to their advantage instead of trying to adapt the show in spite of it which is probably the biggest problem most of the time.

AMY!! I’m so glad you made the point about the volume and sound mix in La La Land. 100% agree with you. I love the movie, but since day 1, I’ve thought the sound mix was SO OFF! Another Day of Sun needed to vibrate through the cinema and blow everyone away, but instead it just kinda.. played quietly?

I do think a Wicked movie could actually really work. But what production companies need to let go is the A-list celebrity. It's better to have a big name Broadway star (or even an up and coming singer) to portray the roles than to throw a lot of money on an A-list actor, who might be able to sing, but maybe not even. Like for example, I love Emma Watson and her acting was good, but her singing in Beauty and the Beast just didn't cut it for me. Where I do think the movie could match or even improve the musical version is in the stage design. I don't remember much about Oz, the Great and Powerful, because it just didn't stick, but what I did remember is the amazing settings and even the SFX to create Oz. Similarly to that, they could make magic in the design of their settings for Wicked.

My unpopular opinion-Sharpay, while a hilarious character is absolutely a villain. She sabotages not one but two competitions over the three films. Remember, Troy and Gabriella just got the callback for being late, Sharpay just didn’t want competition which is why she messed with the callback. True villain behavior. Not to mention how she treated Ryan. She’s a good villain, but a villain nonetheless

    • @nanalove3819

I totally agree. I love Sharpay but she was still a villain for me. She tried to stop them from auditioning just because she did not want competition, that's not something a hero does.

I didn't know where to post this so I put it here. I know musical stuff is your thing, but if you ever wanted to do a non-musical, I have a couple suggestions for you. There is Tin Can Bros Wayward Guide . . . (not a musical, but has familiar StarKid faces in it and is pretty good); Tin Cans Solve-It Squad Returns (essentially Scooby Doo gang in the future and is not a musical, but does have an opening musical number with a few StarKids and Brian Rosenthal being amazing as an entire supporting cast); and Shipwrecked Comedy's Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Invite Only Casual Dinner Party/Gala For Friends Potluck (not a musical, but has a couple familiar StarKid faces in a Clue-inspired story focusing on authors as the characters). Then there is a web series called World's Worst Musical which features some StarKid favorites in musical episodes. Hope that helps. I thought you would like to know. Love your reactions. 🙂

I love this video because it turns out that you and I have almost all the same unpopular opinions 😆
Into the Woods is my top favorite musical and I was SO disappointed by the movie. Out of everything wrong with it, the thing that disappointed me most was that they didn’t bother to expand the scenes described in some of the songs. I mean, so much of what happens in the show is only described through song. On stage, the limitations make sense, but part of the advantage of adapting a show into a movie is that there are far fewer limitations on scenery, special effects, etc. Like, Giants in the Sky, instead of just having Jack on screen for entire song, maybe actually show the scenes that the lyrics are describing?? You go the entire first act without even showing montage/snippets of the Prince’s grand festival??? Then why did you even bother adapting???? I could’ve just rewatched the filmed Broadway production!!
I was super disappointed in the Les Mis movie, too, what with the live singing and lousy casting, but the one thing they got right was capitalizing on the opportunity to portray the scope of the scenery and events (ie: the suffering of the chain gang, the gorgeous French countryside, etc) that can only be alluded to/implied on stage.

With trailers what I'd like to see are things like what 'In the Heights' did or possibly have a regular trailer that shows scenes from the movie underscored by an instrumental arrangement of one of the most popular or groups numbers, wherein the last few seconds it shows the whole cast singing and/or dancing.
Unpopular opinions: 1. Tom Hooper should never be allowed to direct a movie musical again. 2. There needs to be a musicologist or a vocal director who can not be fired for telling the director how musicals work. 3. No more stuffing an original song in for an Emmy. I get that you want another award nomination, but it is coming at the emotional core and pacing of the show. (I'm looking at you live-action Disney and 'Cats'.)

since a bunch of movies have been made into musicals recently, I'm curious what movies you think would make a good stage musical? I think Coneheads & Wayne's World would be so much fun; also I always wanted a Devil Wears Prada musical, & now they're making one, with music by Elton John! so I'm excited about that. and since Carrie worked so well, I would love a Stepford Wives musical.

Amy, I completely agree with your opinions on the Into the Woods movie and trailers for movie musicals!
With Into the Woods, I felt that Disney kind of dropped the ball on how the film could successfully be adapted, because that hindered the tonal shift that occurs in the second half of the story (of course, most films that are made nowadays utilize a three-act plot structure, but musicals that are adapted to film sometimes don't have that luxury to easily translate from a two-act plot structure to a three-act plot structure.)
And with movie musical trailers, there have definitely been some strong ones over the last decade (the many In the Heights trailers come to mind, as they perfectly captured what the movie was gonna be like, and they also weren't shy to make it clear that it was a musical with singing and dancing), but there have also been some poor trailers too (You Will Be Found was used as the overarching theme for the Dear Evan Hansen trailer, but seeing Ben Platt singing for maybe five seconds in the trailer doesn't translate to a film that will be chock full of songs when it's released ~ same goes for the tick, tick...BOOM! trailer as well, and that’s a Jonathan Larson piece, so you know there's gonna be a lot of music!)

I also agree about ur trailer comment. To me all the ad should say is "This is a musical" and I'd go see it. I honestly saw the 'Dear Evan Hanson' trailer n thought they'd made it straight. I actually had to research it after to check if it was a musical, n that irritates me.

I genuinely enjoy those. I rewatched Hairspray a ton after it came out. The remake anyway, I could not get into
    the original @.@
I'm here for these opinions. I feel validated lol
I want to add something. I dunno if this is unpopular or not. I would really like more recordings of musicals. I have seen a handful in person, but there are a TON I've missed.
I will happily pay money to just be able to watch the damn performances and not some bootleg recording @.@ Like, Shrek has done it. Hamilton has done it. I will always prefer being physically there to watching a recording, but I'll take a recording over missing out entirely ya know? It just bothers me that it feels kind of like...exclusive. Oh well, if ya didn't catch the show during these specific years, guess you're shit out of luck unless it comes back around to MAYBE have a chance to go see it. Come on man...

After I saw In the Heights I was telling my husband that I was so glad that we have a Hamilton pro shot not a movie. I thought In the Heights was great, but I really don't think that Hamilton would transfer very well. Part of what makes it great is the way it was written and staged to work as a stage musical. I just think a lot of the magic would be lost on film.

You are SO right about the Into The Woods movie! I've said elsewhere that some musicals, like Into The Woods and Wicked, would be better off adapted in two installments. Perhaps Into The Woods would have been a long shot since it's not as well known outside of theatre fandom, but they could totally do it with Wicked!
