In The Heights was my favourite movie musical of 2021 and it's not particularly close. It just came out at the perfect time for me and just brought me a lot of joy! I still need to watch Everyone's Talking about Jamie, tho
Before the movie Encanto, they released the ost so i listened to the songs before i saw the movie. And honestly I felt exactly like you the first time I listened to it. Nothing really sticked to me. Rhythm Nation and Somebody to Love were both used in Happy Feet 1/2. Honestly, it’s really bad when I’m watching a musical and think, “I prefer the penguin version.”
I just can't get behind Ansel Elgort being in WSS. It puts a sour taste in my mouth no matter how much i try to enjoy it. The only musical number I liked in Cinderella was “Whatta Man/Seven Nation Army” which I found on TH-cam after giving up with the film because a friend told me about it. I don’t understand how you can have a movie that has Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver and Billy Porter among others and it’s this dull. Also why didn’t they advertise them being in it? I’m glad for them in one way because hopefully nobody will remember they were in it but it seems a bit of a snub to them to not advertise them.
Come From Away was so good. It and Tick Tick, Boom are easily my favourite musicals this year and I can't wait to watch them again, and again, and again.
When I heard Lin Manuel was directing, I thought, "he's already a genius writer and composer and actor and singer. He can't possibly a genius director too." Well, I'll be damned. Just, wow. lol
There was also Annie Live in the US, though I don’t know if you could watch it in the UK, and it was surprisingly fantastic. I didn’t expect that since live musicals do not have the best track record, but this was definitely one of the best ones so far.
Definitely watch Vivo! Lin's songs are so much better in that one. The storyline is maybe less interesting than Encanto but it's worth it for the songs alone.
my favourite was Encanto, followed *very* closely by Tick Tick Boom. i kind of see where you're coming from with the Encanto soundtrack because when i first saw the film i didn't love the songs (although i did think the Waiting on a Miracle sequence was stunning), but the more i listened to them the more they grew on me and now i think they're great! possibly a hot take but i think it's the best animated film Disney's made since Tangled. and Tick Tick Boom was just... ugh incredible. i wasn't super familiar with the show beforehand so i had zero expectations going in and was blown away! can't believe i hadn't heard any of the music before.

Props for including A Week Away! Now, I'll admit, this movie is my Diana. I know it's awful, but as I've seen it 3 times! It's unbelievably cheesy, the miming is terrible, but there's a strong dose of nostalgia that keeps my coming back for more. For context, I attended Christian summer camp as a kid. And I did genuinely enjoy the closing number. Also, I spent a solid 30 minutes my first time through the film trying to work out how they got Dave Koechner to be in it. Sherri Sheppard is a Christian so she made sense, and kids just starting in the biz will take any job they can get, but Dave Koechner is an established, secular comedian. How much did they pay him? Were they blackmailing him? That's what I want to know.

I agree with your assessment of Encanto. The story was decent and the characters were interesting, but the music added nothing. I think they should have gone the Pixar route and removed the songs.
Encanto was so bright and colourful, a great antidote to the cold and wet December. None of the songs were very memorable and the story was rushed, but I liked the setting, the characters and the animals.
i agree so much with what you say about Dear Evan Hansen, like if you had none nothing about the og show then it would have been a fine film to watch. However, i love the show and just parts of plots and certain characters saying different characters lines made me so frustrated when watching the film. Lets not even talk about the ending and the new songs because :(((
1. Tick, tick, boom (Netflix) 2. West Side Story (HBO Max? Disney+?) 3. Come from away (AppleTV) 4. In the Heights (NowTV, Sky Movie, Prime) 5. Everybody Talking About Jamie (Prime) 6. Diana: The Musical (Netflix) 7. Encanto (Disney+) 8. Cinderella (I think I've seen it on Prime, but not sure) 9. A week away (Netflix) 10. Dear Evan Hansen Not seen: Respect, Vivo, Annette
Annette was really weird as it has an animatronic baby/child that I could not get used to! Respect is a biopic of a great musical legend-I knew nothing about Aretha Franklin’s life. West Side Story is amazing, I loved it! I felt each scene looked like a stage set, the costumes and singing were incredible. In The Heights was great, loved the clever songs and the reveal at the end. So feel-good and fun!
I also didn't feel as strongly about Enchanto. I love the diversity of the cast and it's obviously beautiful to look at, but I just... I didn't have much of a connection to the story or music. It was played EVERYWHERE as well, which meant it was drilled into my brain. I loved ETBJ and In the Heights
I'm pretty sure both Ella Enchanted and Happy Feet used Somebody to Love. I only watched Cinderella once but I felt like I'd already seen it. And there were such big names and none of it came together. Felt like a waste of talent. My fave is definitely Tick Tick Boom. It really moved me and I just felt that Andrew Garfield did a great job of playing a character who was so flawed and yet still kept him empathetic. I had the opposite problem with Encanto. I loved the music and the animation of the all the dancing was so detailed but the story didn't really hit for me. I felt like it never really got going and it was all so predictable. Really enjoyed seeing your list Amy and you other guys in the comments. I can't believe how much musical stuff has been out lately!
Tick Tick Boom & In The Heights are some of my fav movies at the moment. I also like West Side Story, Encanto (I actually watch it last night.) & unpopular opinion I actually like Dear Evan Hansen
I think In the Heights was my favourite followed by Tick Tick Boom! Always loved the Everybody's Talking About Jamie soundtrack and I kinda feel if I wasn't as big of a fan of the original cast recording I would've preferred the film if that makes sense 😂 I just felt the vibe of soundtrack was quite different and preferred the original but still gutted it didn't get a proper cinema release!
i do hope you talk about the fact that they recast the throw-away character with a nonbinary character, in the sense that, the character is all about fitting in, but they keep throwing away the character. it was very heavy for me to watch as i saw my friend in that. and none of the reviewers have spoken about it ):
Okay, so I loved the music in Encanto but I felt that, story wise, it was pretty meh. As a latina, I understand and relate to the concept of a matriarch big house owner that gathers all the family, but I still felt that there wasn't many story to go about, and nothing really exciting happened
I really like the story! I love how it focuses on the individual characters and their insecurities and the way its so family orientated. They didn’t need to do a huge scale adventure like Raya - they kept it small scale and contained so they can focus on the details that make the movie so beautiful
My rankings on the movie I’ve seen 1. West Side Story Ranking A 2. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Ranking B 3. Encanto Ranking A 4. Cinderella C I completely agree. This version of Cinderella was very underwhelming and the music was not very good. I could not make it past the scene when the Fairy Godmother entered. I think this movie had Idina Menzel’s weakest performance. 5. Dear Evan Hansen B I agree with everything you said.
It just broke me seeing how terrible dear evan hansen is. There were some amazing actors in it but there were some pretty big flaws. I really really wish we had an actor playing evan who was of the age, it would make it so much better.
Tick... Tick... Boom was my favorite. In the Heights would've been better if Lin had directed it and not John M. Chu. Not a fan of his directing. Sorry.
Imo the new West Side Story fucks. I didn’t hate Ansel as much as I thought I would, though I would have preferred to have someone with more musical experience in the role. He just didn’t meld in like the others did. I could forget that Mike Faist was Mike Faist but he was still Ansel Elgort. Once I noticed what his throat was doing when he was singing, that’s the only thing I could focus on lol.
So I have been watching the reviews for west side story and no one has brought up the relationship between the police and the sharks and the way Steven Spielberg completely wrote that out... Like for me, that was huge, I remember them teaching west side story in music appreciation class, and it was the only time I had ever heard my teachers discussing the racism of the police, I live in staten island and we are known for our conservative values, so for me that was big... its amazing how much more regressive the new one was, when compared to the one from 1961.... even though it was cast better, the story was made to be regressive... like I do like that they gave Riff a deeper back story, but by giving him a purpose to hate the Puerto Ricans, it kind of changes things... now the white Boys are actually being replaced by the Puerto Ricans rather than it being an imagined issue... and at one point it sounded like Tony was envious of the sharks having a community... these are all little things that they are trying to point out that both sides had it rough, and the original was very clear that the sharks were on their own in a strange city... its a weird thing to change. Then almost all of Tony's songs are suppose to be in his head... like they are monolougues... why is he singing to Rita Moreno??? Lmao. Like I get they were trying to utilize her as much as possible, but to see Tony singing to her she just felt extra... And then I never realized how important facial expressions were... and none of this new cast had it... old school actors just have more expressive faces... they cast it to pretty for me, so pretty infact that their faces lack character to make me feel anything... Otherwise I loved it. Lol.
Oh and they robbed Maria of her end monologue... omg... it was just torn apart and not even glued back together well... it was like he was trying to avoid what the original story was about... people who hated each other for no good reason... and they tried to hide that at every spot.
My ranking: West Side Story (10/10) If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (9) Come From Away (9) Annie Live (8) In the Heights (7) Jamie (6.5) Tick Tick Boom (6.5) Annette (6) Encanto (6) Cinderella (6) Respect (6) Music (4) Dear Evan Hansen (3) Diana The Musical (1)

Encanto would have been so much higher on my list. I related so hard to the characters because mental health... Issues...
'Oh my god, Mike Faist' - literally me every day for the last 4 weeks
Eugene sighting 😻😻😻
Encanto below Diana? Controversial
I watched In the Heights in the cinema 3 times as well 😂 I love it!
1. Tick, tick, boom (Netflix)
2. West Side Story (HBO Max? Disney+?)
3. Come from away (AppleTV)
4. In the Heights (NowTV, Sky Movie, Prime)
5. Everybody Talking About Jamie (Prime)
6. Diana: The Musical (Netflix)
7. Encanto (Disney+)
8. Cinderella (I think I've seen it on Prime, but not sure)
9. A week away (Netflix)
10. Dear Evan Hansen
Not seen: Respect, Vivo, Annette
You can’t watch DEH on Amazon prime but you have to buy/rent it
Ouch, I loved Encanto
Amy Lovatt is a joy.
Vivo is so good! Deffo watch it
Tick Tick Boom & In The Heights are some of my fav movies at the moment.
Happy new year!
I think I can guess what your issue with 'West Side Story' was. Are their initials A.E.?
A Week Away is also a jukebox musical. All of the songs are 90s/00s CCM songs. 🙃 So so bad.
Completely disagree about Encanto, the music in it is incredible!
Respect is devastating but an important watch
Okay, so I loved the music in Encanto but I felt that, story wise, it was pretty meh. As a latina, I understand and relate to the concept of a matriarch big house owner that gathers all the family, but I still felt that there wasn't many story to go about, and nothing really exciting happened
I really like the story! I love how it focuses on the individual characters and their insecurities and the way its so family orientated. They didn’t need to do a huge scale adventure like Raya - they kept it small scale and contained so they can focus on the details that make the movie so beautiful
I feel like people will come for me but my favourite movie musical was Dear Evan Hansen
I personally loved DEH yes there were faults but it was so much better then it was made out to be
My rankings on the movie I’ve seen
1. West Side Story Ranking A
2. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Ranking B
3. Encanto Ranking A
4. Cinderella C I completely agree. This version of Cinderella was very underwhelming and the music was not very good. I could not make it past the scene when the Fairy Godmother entered. I think this movie had Idina Menzel’s weakest performance.
5. Dear Evan Hansen B I agree with everything you said.
your outfit is so cute!! i just had to click
It just broke me seeing how terrible dear evan hansen is. There were some amazing actors in it but there were some pretty big flaws. I really really wish we had an actor playing evan who was of the age, it would make it so much better.
How the f is Diana over Encanto? I guess girls that get it, get it, and girls that don’t, don’t!
Tick... Tick... Boom was my favorite. In the Heights would've been better if Lin had directed it and not John M. Chu. Not a fan of his directing. Sorry.
Tick, Tick... Boom!, Encanto, West Side Story, In The Heights and Annette were all SO GOOD! Dear Evan Hansen, Cinderella and Diana did nothing for me.
“Maria, Maria, I just met a star named RACHEL”
Ariana DeBose!
You can also watch dear Evan Hansen on a jet blue flight for free. Don’t ask how I know
Was in the heights included or did I just miss it?
It was #4 :)
Somebody to love SET ME OFF on Cinderella. If you're going to reuse a song you better do it better and Cinderella did not deliver.
ENCANTO BELOW DIANA (the horrible) MUSICAL. No just no
I’m sorry in no world is Diana better than encanto 😭😭 and yes Ik it’s your opinion and I don’t hate the musical but encanto is amazing

She’s talking about the film version.
