My buddies and I piled into my car and raced home from school to catch the premiere of this video on MTV back in ‘89. It was their first video ever and couldn’t wait to see what they would do. It literally left us speechless and we all sat there silently, in absolute awe after the video ended. This song was inspired by a story of a man that survived the war, but lost his legs and arms. He was deaf, blind and couldn't speak. Also, I love the fact that the drum breakdown in this was deliberately timed to sound like and have the cadence of, short bursts of machinegun fire. Epic songwriting and it's one of my favorites.
Love your genuine, heartfelt and informed reaction. it warms my heart that more and more people are really finding out why all us depressed, lonely, angry disaffected misfits found a home and family with Metallica. Their music transcends mere musical notes, it is a connection and understanding of our souls.
The film clips are from the 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun, based on the novel of the same name by Dalton Trumbo. The band decided to incorporate the clips because it fit so well with the theme of the song. Metallica actually wound up buying the rights to the film.
Wow, that is so eerie and deep and beautiful. I hadn't heard this song before, thank you for bringing it to my attention. Loved your reaction and honest emotional engagement!
Hey Stacey, thanks again! Wow "One" is such an iconic track by Metallica. The band's transition after Cliff Burton's tragic passing was really quick, with Jason Newsted joining as the new bass player in less than a month. Their "Metallica $5.98 Garage Days Re-Revisited The EP" featured covers of punk bands and even though it only has five songs, it's one of the strongest EPs I've ever heard. It served as a great precursor to the much-anticipated "And Justice for All" album. Fans, including myself, were eagerly waiting for this new Metallica album, hoping for something as amazing as "Master of Puppets" or "Ride the Lightning." "One" left me speechless the first time I heard it, and the whole album is just pure metal and a different sound altogether. I believe "One" was Metallica's first music video for TV, or MTV at the time. We were all crazy about this album! I've seen them live a couple of times, but that was in a different era. In 2021, Elton John mentioned in an interview that "One" was the best song ever written for him. It's great to hear such praise, especially from an artist of a different music genre, and I also happen to love Elton John. They ended up collaborating on some work, which is awesome. Thanks again, Stacey, for the great reaction! These are songs I don't listen to very often these days-I have too many on my mind! I save them for special occasions. I was 17 when I got this album. Love those days! Thanks again, love your channel, can't wait for the next one. Cheers! Keep it up!
Just ONE, only ONE song could give me those goosebumps when Metallica are starting the serious game 🥁🎸 After the beautiful introduction who describes the peace and democracy on 2nd part is coming the heaviness and fatalities of war 🤘 Always a pleasure to hear your Metallica's reactions Stacey ☺️ Bye'n'cha 🤘🤘🤘

This is one of the best Metallica songs ever and this still hits hard as it did back in 1994. About the movie, I can relate to it because I used to have American gf who was deployed in Kuwait. She got shot in the leg about year ago and got depression from the pain. She tried to take her own life back in july and was flown back to Tampa, Fl. She was in coma for 5 weeks and when she was getting better after months, she od:d on hospital drugs. This was now one month ago 💔
My condolences to you and I wish she could have stayed with us, but I understand how deeply and painful it is to live with the scars of war. It does not care who you are... it just destroys all. No one wins in war. Much peace and love to you.
I remember being a teenager when MTV used to announce what time the new videos were coming out this is my all-time Metallica song and video of all time
In my humble opinion this is Metallica's best song ( they do have many great songs though) and without doubt the best, and first, music video they made. As expected, you truly got the meaning and points of this song. Yes, it's heavy, and sadly still as valid as ever. Great reaction Stacey. Regards Norseman
36 years since I have heard this *One* for the very first time!.. and it still gets me so much deep..every single time! Every single, bloody.. _ONE_ of them!! 😢😒😢😭😭😭 [..War is an *evil* thing! Pardon my tears once again!!]
YES! I'm so glad you added this reaction to your channel. Such a great video and reaction. Just as powerful today as it was in the 90s! If you want another one to react to, try "Unforgiven" from the same era. I remember being on lunch in high school, down at the store (they had tables and a TV always set to MTV), and it was always loud in there, but when "Unforgiven" came on, the whole store would go dead quiet and we all got goosebumps watching it. In my opinion, not as powerful as this video, but it is epic in its own right!
The video is a mash up of clips from an old war movie like many people have said already, in my opinion this is the most well done and most powerful music video of all time. What a statement made by the most iconic metal band ever. Awesome reaction beautiful, keep up the Metallica videos, there are a ton out there to watch. ❤️❤️❤️
I read this book when i was 15, saw the movie at 17, the song and video inspired me to go down that rabbit hole. Joined the infantry at 19, and was always haunted by the prospect of shat might be. My friend Chris was blown up in Iraq, and this is my reminder of my friend.
I really enjoy your reaction videos, it feels great to see someone, truthfully connected to their emotions, do these. ONE is Metallica's GOAT and If you enjoyed the depth of its emotions, then I recommend another really deep and sad song from them : Fade to Black
Miss Stacy, this song has made me cry for many years now. I suggest that you find this version that supplies the lyrics to this song. This song is a master piece of composition and talent. And then mixing the movie into this presentation is nothing short of genius. Just purchased my tickets to see Metallica in Houston, TX next summer. Just let me know if you would like to join me.
All the friends i grew up with used to say, "You know you can play guitar when you can nail a Metallica bridge". That was was the standard set. 30+ yrs ago. This song conjures nostalgia. Mark the moment ❤❤
Damn! For a second there, I thought I was watching Dua Lipa reacting to music videos. You are fvking gorgeous, even more so. "ONE" is my favorite Metallica song/video as well. I would say it's in my top 3 most perfect videos I've ever seen in my life, probably number "ONE." I agree that the video is "haunting," and the music is no less than sonic perfection.
You started head-banging there for a second Stacey. We'll make a bad-ass metalhead out of you yet. While I'm not a huge fan of this band, this is my favourite Metallica song. Coming along on your journey of discovery is so rewarding and adorable and a lot of fun. Keep up the good work girl.
Hi Stacey, Bill from Toronto. I love the lil facials you make when your rockin out, so adorable. Keep doing what your doing, great channel Stacey, great music. Cheers❤😊
Great reaction. This was the first song I learned on electric guitar many moons ago. You need to listen to the big 4. One, Fade to Black, Sanitarium and The Unforgiven. They are all song number 4 on their respective albums and the most beautiful power ballads on each album. Also the sing The Four Horsemen form the first album deserves to be on the list. Also song 4.
Kirk Hammet probably sleeps with his guitar I can't lie. 2 weeks ago, I wrote an essay comparing this song and All Quiet All On the Western Front and how they describe the reality of war. I'm 15 years old, and I started playing drums when I was 4, mastering this song and Master Of Puppets at the age of 10.
Loved your reaction 👌🎶🎵🎶🎵 The 1st time I heard the JUSTICE FOR ALL album, I was blown away. The only album I knew at the time was The BLACK album. When I learned how to play guitar, Metallica was my guitar tablature teacher Lol "ONE" was definitely a must to learn Can't wait til you get into some Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple Of The Dog, & the Late Great Chris Cornell 🙏
The double bass drum and rapid fire guitars are meant to simulate the hell of war and machine gun fire. This song is definitely a metal masterpiece. They played it back in the 80's at a high school dance and it was epic. All you could see is hair flying because everyone was headbanging. 🤘
Disposable Heroes next. I can list many, Harvester of Sorrow, God that failed, Shortest straw, Battery, Fight fire with fire. And not to forget Master of Puppets.
I played drums for a long time , I never played this song with a band but I used to air drum it all the time . A reaction to Aerosmith - Dream On would definitely make my day . Live at Donington Park is one of the good versions .
I still maintain that while this is great, the version from the 1999 S&M concert with a full orchestra backing up the band takes this track to a different level. But then I think the whole S&M concert is epic.
"I'm sure it reasonates with so many soldiers out there.." You have no idea. The emotional scars of war take decades to heal. The song perfectly captures the emotional pain of PTSD. My pain was made tolerable by discovering the mercy of Jesus...20 years later. The physical pain, emotional trauma, anger and regret no longer master me, but it does sit there in the corner of my mind. It has no power over me any more. Being saved was an incredible mercy. I love this song because it captures the emotion trauma of war...and unless you have been there, you wouldn't understand without this small window into that complexity.
When this Album came out 1988 I was 16 It was so awesome. Watching you experiencing this song for the first fills my Heart. I kept getting emotional watching you reacting.
Great reaction. I still remember when this video premiered on MTV, I was 19. Metallica's first music video, that was huge. Thrash bands really didn't make videoes because MTV would hardly play them if at all. A friend of mine had read the book and saw the movie Johnny Got His Gun so he explained the movie scenes. And I have to recommend a reaction to the Metallica song Dyer's Eve. The last song on the Justice album. Musically and lyrically, the song is pure anger and rage due to what it's about.
This was my first Metallica experience seeing this video as a teenager on MTV in the 90s. Few songs have ever impacted me more. The definition of living Hell. Now thirty years later as a Veteran who has fought in war I am grateful for not having such a fate.
The most complete metal song ever made. The music promoted a whole gamut of emotions...James at the top of his game with that growling voice of his, the many transitions in beat, rhythm, and style, from flat out classical in the beginning to the death march in percussion, and onward to the internal screaming matched by the lead guitar, to the grinding beat of a war machine...in search of its next victim(s) in the another human conflict in the future. This is definitely art transcending not just the metal genre, but music as a whole for a generation.
This is amongst best of METALLICA. They are not talent, They are GREAT MASTERS OF MODERN MUSIC! There is nothing to smile to in this song, all is very said.
I saw them live 3 times and they kicked my ass every time. Master of puppets tour was my first and we literally got scalped tickets for 10 bucks. Last minute decision.. Best decision ever 😂 Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
There are great songs and there are epic masterpieces that are gorgeous progressions of sound and feeling: Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Led Z’s Stairway to Heaven and Metallica’s One. Not to say others don’t exist, of course. Excellent reaction.
From Wikipedia: "One" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as the third and final single from the band's fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988). Written by band members James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, the song portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded-arms, legs and jaw blown off by a landmine, blind, deaf, and unable to speak or move-begging God to take his life. In the music video, attempting to communicate with the hospital staff he jolts in his bed, spelling SOS in Morse code. A video for the song was introduced in January 1989 on MTV. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon, the video's story is intercut with scenes taken from the 1971 anti-war film Johnny Got His Gun. Due to routinely being required to pay royalty fees to continue showing the music video, Metallica bought the rights to the film. The video was ranked at number one on MTV soon after its introduction.
This was the first song by Metallica ever played on commercial radio stations, and it took Metallica 7 years to come out with their first Music video and this was it. the whole album was written with an open wound, the death of bassist Cliff Burton . verry fast paced full of anger and aggression. They didn't want to just make a trite video with girls and drugs cars and all of the cliches that most "hair" metal bands released at this time. They wanted to make a point and the book and movie Johnny got his gun made perfect visuals for the lyrics Hetfield wrote for the song, with some additional thought provoking images. I was further cemented as a die hard member of the Metal Melitia , & am still a proud member after 41 years.
This is such a genius piece of art. Listen to the machine gun fire in the into and then the drum transition in the middle then the immediate reference to Morse code which can sound the same. This was a collaboration of super talented people.

My buddies and I piled into my car and raced home from school to catch the premiere of this video on MTV back in ‘89. It was their first video ever and couldn’t wait to see what they would do. It literally left us speechless and we all sat there silently, in absolute awe after the video ended. It was the most amazing video we’d ever seen and it’s still the best single piece of media that’s ever been created….in my opinion. I still get chills when I watch it to this day………..
Right there with ya
the first time i saw this video i was at a disco-bar in cancun, and they put the premiere of the song in a big screen, and it blew peoples heads, i didn´t breathe for a couple of minutes, i still remember it
One of the greatest and most important songs ever released by the greatest band ever….art on an otherworldly level by geniuses 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘. Metallica bought all the rights to the movie “ Johnny Got His Gun” in order to avoid paying royalties….smart move by Lars 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘🇩🇰🇩🇰. Next one; “Fade to Black” live from Nimes 2009…the venue, music and lyrics will stun and amaze you
Not sure how your channel ended up on my feed but I'm glad it did. I love seeing younger generations find and love Metallica. Takes me back to when I was a teen in the 80's. I'm taking my daughter to her first Metallica concert in a few months. Keep rockin.
It's moving and beautiful to see how the song touches your thoughts and feelings. It's one of my Metallica's favorite
Great reaction, one of my favorite song of all time
Keep pumping out great content stacey 👌🏽
Another amazing analyses! Always worth my time and certainly entertaining. Have a wonderful day, Stacey!!!
Had the absolute privilege to see this performed live in Warsaw this July. I travelled from the UK to Poland specifically for this concert and stayed for 4 nights. Was a life changing experience. Love your reactions as always and seeing the contrast between your tears and rocking out.
The Double Bass drums !! Absolutely amazing
@@LiannaBabeli thank you so much 🥲
I remember being a teenager when MTV used to announce what time the new videos were coming out this is my all-time Metallica song and video of all time
In my humble opinion this is Metallica's best song ( they do have many great songs though) and without doubt the best, and first, music video they made.
😢😒😢😭😭😭
[..War is an *evil* thing! Pardon my tears once again!!]
Yes, the song by itself hits much different than the video. Great reaction. One of the best I’ve seen to this video. 👍🏼
Awesome job Stacey you went on full roller coaster with that one.. Close to moshpit status when the drums dropped.. You go girl 🤘
Watched them perform this song at a concert in 1992, truly epic 🤘🏻
Same. Black tour.
Hi Stacey, great reaction! One of my favorite Metallica songs. A truly masterpiece ❤
Please, next "Avenged Sevenfold - So Far Away" 😊
It's pure pleasure to watch how you react, how your emotions change, how subsequent layers emerge. I'm waiting for further reactions from Metallica.
The video is a mash up of clips from an old war movie like many people have said already, in my opinion this is the most well done and most powerful music video of all time. What a statement made by the most iconic metal band ever. Awesome reaction beautiful, keep up the Metallica videos, there are a ton out there to watch. ❤️❤️❤️
I would highly recommend “Nothing Else Matters” one of the greatest songs ever written.
Elton John said it's one of the best songs ever. I agree! Fade to Black is amazing also.
I don’t know about your past, but you’re so good at this. Absolutely love all of your reactions!! 👏🏻
I saw Metallica last Year at Sofi stadium, they did not disappoint it was fire.
I became a huge Metallica fan after watching this video for the first time; that was 1992, when I was 11.
Such a visceral emotional journey. The song stands on its own, but the video really cranks the experience up to 11.
LOVED YOUR REACTION ,ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG😘
This is a true Madterpiece!
Loved your reaction 👌🎶🎵🎶🎵 The 1st time I heard the JUSTICE FOR ALL album, I was blown away. The only album I knew at the time was The BLACK album. When I learned how to play guitar, Metallica was my guitar tablature teacher Lol "ONE" was definitely a must to learn
Can't wait til you get into some Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple Of The Dog, & the Late Great Chris Cornell 🙏
Justice for all was my first Metallica album. Beautiful reaction
At 13 years old, we dissect this video in the english clash (i'm french Canadian).. it marked me for life 👌
The double bass drum and rapid fire guitars are meant to simulate the hell of war and machine gun fire. This song is definitely a metal masterpiece. They played it back in the 80's at a high school dance and it was epic. All you could see is hair flying because everyone was headbanging. 🤘
Moving. Every…single…time…fuck war.
I could have written that👍
and i also still end up here...... every..... single...... time
Disposable Heroes next. I can list many, Harvester of Sorrow, God that failed, Shortest straw, Battery, Fight fire with fire. And not to forget Master of Puppets.
This song got me hooked in the 80s and I've been a fan since!! Great work out song 👍
Love the reactions! It’s tough being a music lover stuck alone in a fishbowl but these videos help make it somewhat tolerable.
This is a must see live!
Jason's backing vocals and how they play this live...
So much better.
"I'm sure it reasonates with so many soldiers out there.."
You have no idea.
This video started my Metallica journey 35 years ago... still loving it and saw them 5 times LIVE. Great reaction.
Ultimate anti war masterpiece! ONE of the Metallica's best songs! I love your reaction, and hello from Serbia 🇷🇸!
Love your genuine reactions!
And this is why Metallica are the Kings of Metal.. Good Reaction 👍🏼
Another young fan!!!
Best decision ever 😂 Great reaction and Peace out 🙏 ☮️ ✌️
One. One of the most impactful songs of my lifetime.
There are great songs and there are epic masterpieces that are gorgeous progressions of sound and feeling: Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Led Z’s Stairway to Heaven and Metallica’s One. Not to say others don’t exist, of course.
Excellent reaction.
From Wikipedia:
"One" is a song by American heavy metal band Metallica, released as the third and final single from the band's fourth studio album, ...And Justice for All (1988).
This is the song that solidified my love of Metallica. I kinda came late, missed the release of “Master of Puppets” etc, but found them after this.❤
'He's a product of your profession, not mine'😱😱😱
You should have seen them LIVE in concert when they played this. EPIC
They still play it. You should see it now
This is such a genius piece of art. Listen to the machine gun fire in the into and then the drum transition in the middle then the immediate reference to Morse code which can sound the same. This was a collaboration of super talented people.
