I'm 98 years old I'm a world war 2 veteran I served with 16th Infantry Regiment. Part of the 1st Infantry Division, we were tasked with clearing the landing sectors code-named "Easy Red" and "Fox Green" on Omaha Beach first wave D-Day. My great grandson showed me this video. I definitely can relate to this video and song. There hasn't been a day I have not ended up back on that beach. I can smell the diesel fuel. I see my screaming dying comrade's it's as if I were still there. But I'm one of the lucky ones i got to come home.

This is Metallica's first video and it helped my mom and I connect more. It came out when I was in high school, listening to heavy stuff like this that my parents didn't get. But when I showed my mom the video, she remembered watching the movie when she was in high school. We sat and watched it while I told her the lyrics and she explained the movie. One of my better memories.

My mom gave me "Master of Puppets" CD in 1986 as a Christmas gift. She was and is a devout Christian. I've been a metalhead ever since. I like a little of everything but metal just has that touch or pound if you will.
Orion was the Metallica song that got my mom to "ah ha" and she understood why I dug Metallica, she eventually started playing along on the piano.

When this video came out no one had seen anything like it before. Most people who saw it had never HEARD anything like it before. This was mainstream culture's introduction to Metallica. To this day I think it's still one of the most stunning pieces of audio-visual art ever created.
It wasn't the heaviest thing in metal at the time, but this video was huge when i was a teen. It was my hook into metal.
@@mstorrboy Metallica has never been the heaviest band in metal but when this video debuted it was definitely the heaviest thing to ever break into the mainstream. Like you Metallica was my gateway into metal. For me it was Puppets. Metallica deserves a ton of credit for creating millions of new metalheads whichever song or album it was that hooked them.
This and Cult of Personality opened up an entire new style of music to this teen in the 80s.

Metallica was arguably the biggest act on the heavier side of metal at the time. Maybe Maiden could match them but no other band outside of them. There were more hard rock acts that were bigger, like Van Halen, ACDC, Scorpions etc but nothing this heavier metal... And at that time Metallica was soo inaccesible they had quite a Mystique of them.... Everyone else, including Slayer, had music videos already but Metallica hadn't done a thing, just Cliff em All documentary

You guys have no idea how many kids in the '80s and '90s worldwide developed anti-war beliefs because of bands like Metallica and Megadeth.
Which is interesting coming from a genre of music which quite a lot of the output material used war and glorification of violence. Alsoz metal as a genre is full of very Right Wing people politically. Very gun friendly folks for the most part

You missed the meaning completely. He is not saying that he is one like he is one in a million. He is saying that he is one as in he is completely alone. He cannot see, he cannot hear, he cannot smell, he cannot feel, he cannot hear... all he has is himself in his own mind. He is one. That is, he is completely alone, all by himself with no one to talk to or communicate with. All he has is his own thoughts to contend with. No body. No bodily functions. No friends or family. He is alone with himself. He is one. The completely united because there is nothing else to but him.

I went to school every morning riding my bike listening to Metallica. I have a bond with my father through Metallica. My dad always said One was his favorite song. Dad passed away two months ago after we learned he had been hiding a fight with cancer for over a year because he didn't want to be treated differently. I have always loved Metallica and this song, but now the connection means everything to me. The memories of my father that live in Metallica's music.
Dad I love you and I miss you so much. You protected me for 36 years and I love you for it. Rest easy now my superman.

This was metallicas first music video as they were opposed to them for seeming mainstream or sell outish. James wanted to do something more meaningful and definitely succeeded.
Boy robbed all of us from One of Metallica's most iconic verses. This was Metallica's first music video and so far hasn't been topped by them. The crossover to ptsd and addiction interpretation to being trapped and therefore hopeless is spot on. Peace/JT

My interpretation of the juxtaposition of the heavier and quieter parts is that it's supposed to mimic his quasi-wakefulness, with dreams of his childhood shifting into nightmares of the war and back, as his mind races between agony and apathy.

"One" has also been present in several forms of media for over 30 years. Movies, games, probably viral memes and ads as well.
There's no way it's the first time she's heard it. Metallica is the most popular metal band in the world, and this is often in the top 3 of their most popular songs.

But joking aside, I never did understand this "isolationism" that people are tested and trained for/against for science on long space trips. They must not have met anyone in, or ever heard of jails/prisons... at times you could be in a 6x10 cell up to 23+ hours a day for weeks or months on end.

Should watch the movie, it's powerful. A nurse opens the curtains so he can feel the sun and he start tracking the days. She writes Merry Christmas with her finger on his chest.
When I was deep into my addiction I used to go to bed every night wishing for death and then cursing each morning because it didn't happen. Went to prison on drug charges, then cleaned my act up. Went back into the prisons,(including where I did time), for 10 years doing ministry and counseling. Will celebrate 28 years clean and sober in June

Metallica is my favorite band. I have been listening to them since the mid eighties. I am here still because of them. The Song Fade to Black got me through alot of Dark moments. And still does, the song just makes you feel like you are not alone the build up through the song just fills you full of energy again. Thanks for reacting to them.
Listening to this song makes me think back when my mom was in hospice care for three months. She just lay there with her eyes open, unable to move. She could hold my hand, but that was it.

This video was my first Metallica experience when it was on MTV as a teenager. Few songs have ever impacted me harder: the definition of living Hell. Now twenty five years later as a Veteran who has fought in a war I am grateful for not having such a fate.
I was 11 when this came out. It was the first thing that made me think about what it meant to be alive. There were a lot of 'heavy' bands active, heck this was Metallica's 4th album, but this was arguably the first metal song to cross over into the mainstream in such a huge way. There were a few videos that featured movie clips, but they were almost always from soundtracks, This is one of, if not the only, video that I've ever seen that interweaves movie clips in a narrative way. Easily one of the best videos ever.
I’m 41 and I had heard Metallica before but after watching this video and listening to this song I immediately became a Metallica fan!
I am genX and when I speak to my younger social justice minded friends about the male side of oppression I always tell them to watch this video. Often they don't like or appreciate heavy metal until they do. 🤘

I've been a Metallica fan since i can remember. I was born when this song was released. James Hetfield is my idol. His songwriting helps me every day. Keeps me going. From Kill Em All all the way to know with 72 Seasons. Even at his age now, he struggles. 😢. Im am almost 36 years old now, and his and Metallicas music helps keep me going. Along with a few other bands, Metallica was my first band to make me feel like I'm not alone in my personal feelings. Thank you two for doing this.

This song came out early/mid 80s and nobody was prepared for the realism. Art imitating/explaining life-priceless/timeless.
"... and justice for all" came out late in 1988. You have to picture that Metallica didn't form until 1981, and didn't exist in the form that everyone remembers until 1983.

You can really feel the pain and desperation of the person who is trapped in their mind helplessly, it is a work of art. Another song talks about something similar but about an older person.

What an awesome collab! Coincidentally, August Burns Red has got me through some tough times and they are always so cool with the fans. Literally every time I've seen ABR live, they stayed in the venue after the show to interact with the fans. I hope they get all of the accolades and staying power they deserve with the message and attitude.

It's a frame of pain. People feel trapped in their own frame of pain. Songs like this can broaden that frame of pain to understand and sympathize others pain over one's own.

As a die hard Metallica fan from the start in 83. This was so hard to digest at first because we all thought it was not as heavy but it took about the fourth time listening and i realized i had to grow up like the band was. Depper subjects and slower rhythm's.

I have always loved this song but unfortunately the older I get the more I relate to it as I've been chronically ill and keep losing more and more of myself every day as I'm trapped in my body. At one point I was bedridden and so weak I could hardly breathe on my own. I couldn't see straight and was stuck in vertigo spins while in horrible pain.

I'm sorry that you are experiencing these hardships that are taking away from your quality of life, and making you feel like you are losing yourself. I can relate to this in my own ways, which probably are not identical but have similarities. I think that the fact that you are trapped in an ailed body, although it obviously is an awful experience. Can also be looked at in the sense that you are still you mentally. The person who you are on the inside still exists. I'm not sure what ways you can improve your quality of life physically, if there are any, but I think that acceptance and trying to work with what we have is sometimes the best we can do. Do you have any health professionals you can discuss what you are going through with, and perhaps they can have recommendations on how to improve your quality of life?
I wish I knew answers to things like this to help people feel better, but even when there are no obvious answers. I will read what you have to say and reply if you ever need/want to share more. Hope you can find some relief to the things you are experiencing. Even if just a little. <3

This was Metallica's very first music video... During the MTV generation they had built a name for themselves with ZERO radio airplay or MTV videos...
For most of us this was the first time we ever truly see them outside of magazines and the documentary Cliff em All. Maybe some clips on MTV but no actual performances...
They were top of their genre and this comes out...
And this came out in 87 and there was no other videos until 1991... So from 84-91 this was the "One" Metallica video. It was absolutely Epic
To answer the question about bands using movie clips like this.... This was likely the first video on MTV that used movie clips in this context, to push an actual narrative of a story. The band actually purchased the rights to the film specifically to use it this way. People were not into this video at all when it came out. Fans thought Metallica were "selling out" because they had a video on MTV. At the time it was considered a faux pas for a "serious" metal or rock band to have a video on MTV because of all the pop music and glam metal. A few years later, Metallica was considered the biggest band on the planet by a massively wide margin. The did sell out. Show after show after show after show. Still do to present day. I remember political and religious figures also having issues with the video for obvious reasons. People also didn't "get" the movie clips and complained that it distracted too much from the song. As a result, Metallica released an alternate version that ended up being played more often of just them miming playing the song in the warehouse.

As a 10yr army vet, this song hits hard. So many of us feel this way. Trapped in the memories and pain. Wrapped in the guilt and shame. Constantly trying to find our way in a world we don't fit in. Begging for it to just stop until one day we just need to die. This is where we are every day.

The fact that you have served in the army for ten years is amazing, I can't express how grateful I am that people like you have the bravery many of use do not. I promise you that despite how you feel you don't fit in, you belong on this Earth and deserve to live.
One thing I have found in dealing with my depression is that as small and futile as it is, hope is beyond life-changing. You are not a broken person; You are far from broken. The future you have is not just surviving, but living. There is hope for you, this apathy will turn into joy and you will feel whole.
You are not alone in your struggling and hurting. Peace is never something that is unattainable. Please feel comfortable to reach out and share your story with us. We are right here for you.

Trauma is a beast that keeps haunting you, and I can only imagine how painful it is for you to feel like you just don't fit in this world, and maybe somehow don't belong either. It's hard when it feels like there's an invisible barrier between your inner world and the world around you. Inside there's a storm taking place, a scream that needs to be heard, but on the outside it seems that silent remains, and your hurt is unnoticed.
I hope you will keep fighting for yourself, for you absolutely belong and matter. May you find peace, at your very own pace, to replace traumas as a part of your story, and not as something that would define your identity. This song brought metal to a front seat at the Grammys back then. Prior to this hard rock/metal did not get the respect it deserved. “One” changed that & the video made everyone stop in their tracks. It also brought much needed attention to wounded veterans & the necessity for both physical & mental health. A Metallica fan since high school in the 80s, such a library of iconic tunes. (Do you plan on doing any classic rock or 80s rock? Hope so, I’ll keep an eye out)
That particular song touched me a lot from the moment I first heard it, even before I knew its meaning, especially from the first time I saw the video, at that time I was only about 12 years old... Now I'm a retired soldier, I was in the Army for 20 years, and I saw many comrades lose legs and different parts of the body and now that I'm no longer in the Army and I see the video again, I feel it more personal and it gives me a lot of feelings of sadness for my fallen friends.

First of all thank you so incredibly much for your service. I couldn't even imagine some of the things that you and other warriors have seen while deployed. I've heard many stories like yours remembering their fallen friends and comrades in battle, whether it be on the physical battlefield or the mental battlefield.
It's okay to feel sadness for your fallen friends. One of the best things i've heard from a soldier, ironically enough at a Metallica show in Chicago, was when we were leaving and it had been his first time seeing them, just coming home from deployment. He broke down seeing something that reminded him of a friend he lost just a few weeks prior. He said "The reason that flag is flying is because it's being blown by the breath of our friends lost in combat". That hit me so hard but it's 100% true

To picture this soldier in a pain that is so intertwined with loneliness/isolation at the same time. It makes a profound difference when you understand that kind of experience out of your own story.
It makes so much sense to think and reflect back on the people you've known that are not here anymore or were hurt in combat. People you've learned to know personally, saw life in them, then witnessed how wounds and war ended up affecting their life, the life of the people who love them, and who they are as well. It's hard to feel for the people you are attached to, to see the pain they endure and to feel it *with* them. It pushes you into this position of witness, where helplessness and sadness can hit so quickly and so easily. It makes you reflect on how things could, or should, have been. It's painful to face the same brutal reality over and over.
I hope that, somehow, reflecting back and allowing yourself to feel this sadness has brought a bit of catharsis for you. So often our first reaction is to push those emotions away - for they are too heavy, too painful, too uncomfortable. You did well by sitting down and allowing yourself to name those emotions and experiences, reaelly. It may seem insignificant at first to comment on a video like this, but by doing so you've offered a gift to yourself. It's a beautiful gesture for this heart of yours that has things to feel and say - and they absolutely deserve to be listened to.
May your fallen friends rest in peace, and may you keep on embracing the strength that lives in your own vulnerability. Sending much love to you, friend.

I love how people think rock/metal/grunge is just a bunch of meaningless screaming, but if they actually sit and listen to the lyrics they have deep meaning that most can relate to in some way. Metallica had a unique way of mixing hard heavy metal riffs with light beautiful guitar playing. They will forever be one of the most iconic bands. “The greatest” is always up for debate, but definitely one of the greatest. This is a good thing you guys are doing 👏

This is one of my favorite songs from my favorite band and I've never really related this song to my chronic illness before until I watched this. Darkness imprisoning me. Nothing is real but pain now. Trapped in myself. Body my holding cell. Living a life in hell.
This song is about the pain of losing to Jethro Tull at the Grammy's. Absolute Horror.
This song, along with the video, always conjures up strong emotions for me. What a horrible and hopeless situation to be in. Sometimes I when I am feeling a bit down or depressed, I try to remember that my own personal situation could be so much worse and that I must pick my head up and move down the road of life. This song dictates how soldiers were just objects in the 80s. That song goes hand in hand with the banger Disposable heroes from the masterpiece Master of Puppets album
Apart from the song "One" is set 75 years earlier and Disposable Heroes was modern day.
I was a teenager in the 80’s. Metallica helped so many kids with mental health issues - we didn’t talk about that in the 80’s. Their music was an escape and it felt like you had someone who understood you - because your parents certainly didn’t back then! They were so relatable. It’s a feeling that I can’t explain. It’s like a sadness - just like in The Never Ending Story!
Metallica will always remind me of my brother. We were very close growing up and he had depression for which he self medicated with drugs and alcohol. Fade To Black and Nothing Else Matters will always be ours.
