Neglected 24" Mountain Bike gets Transformed! And we lose money on it...

  • This is a name brand 24" children's hardtail which would have sold for $350 back in 2016. We fix everything that's wrong with it, make some parts bin swaps, and do a bit of painting to make it special.
This is the first real kid's bike on Flip Bike. This was hard to make money at because it's only $350 in the first place. In fact, even Trek sells sub $500 children's bikes new. Add to that the narrow age band a 24" bike fits, and we didn't have much luck selling it. Still, we found it a home!

Hey Seth - I'm noticing you mention that often it's the replacement parts that make flipping a bike unprofitable. However, what if those replacement parts, eg tires, brakes, etc were as cheap as the bikes you're buying on craiglist, offerup, etc to resell? In my local area, we have a bike swap event (massive) that is held twice a year. I often can get tires for 1 - 2 bucks. I'm sure there's a local swap meet in your area and they could probably use the expanded coverage your channel would bring. Just a thought.

Good memories. My daughter's 24" mountain bike got stolen and found a couple of months later in an abandoned lot, partly disassembled and missing parts. I spent about $100 on parts to get it back together and upgraded/simplified. While I was at it, I got rid of front derailleur, switched the grip shifts for thumb shifters, and replaced the (missing) brakes. It's now her younger brother's bike and is better than ever.

Having just done something similar on a Haro 24" for my son I can add a few suggestions:
    1. Kenda makes some pretty fat 24" tires for a good price. I was just able to get 2.4's on my sons bike. Run them a low pressure for grip and comfort
    2. Kids bikes always come with grip-shift b/c the companies say "they don't take thier hands off to shift"...but then no kid can ever shift them easily. I switch my kids' bikes to standard thumb/trigger shifters. Quick tip, if its a 6 speed bike, you can use a 7 speed shifter, just set the limits to get rid of the last click
    3. Those stupid freewheels mean you can't easily swap on a bigger cassette, so it possible, get a smaller front ring on there
    4. With v-brakes I put in extra long lever reach bolts to bring the brakes in closer to the grips, then set the pads super close to the rims so they can still get some power without hitting the handlebars with the lever.
    5. I super short stem with shorten the reach for shorter riders.

I'm currently researching the market and will likely spending 200-250€ for a bike like this - he really wants some suspension and I want him to have dynamo hub lights, a rack would be nice as his current bike gets used basically daily and he needs to get stuff to school and alike. Keep on with the good work!

Such a great series. This is one thing people are missing with department store bikes. That $70 bike goes in the trash after a year. This is probably this bikes 3rd or 4th owner and still going strong.

Great work man! Being able to gift it to somebody who will enjoy it and pass it along to someone else is better than a couple hundred bucks

My neighbor gave me an old steel mtb, and after working on restoring it i can really appreciate how much effort you're putting into these. It is not easy to get those looking as brand new as you do.

Loved this build. I’ve done the exact same thing with 24 wheel bikes a few times. Only thing I didn’t agree with on this build is keeping the grip shifter. They are the absolute WORST for kids. Small kids struggle just to twist them. It’s the first thing I swap out when I work on a kids bike and every time the parents comment on how much better their kid is doing shifting gears. Love this series Seth.

Went through something similar, sold my kid's 24" Raleigh Scout that we had bought new and all three kids rode at some point. Refreshed it much like you did with new cables, paint, Schwalbe tires, etc. I knew the market was slim for better kids bikes and after three weeks I finally found a buyer for $125. But that kid was smiles so it was worth it!

Hey, my bonus dad has a bike from when he was a kid. It is in some dire need of some work but he doesn't have time to work on it, But we want him to be able to ride with us. Maybe your next episode of flip bike could be that.
