Badly Damaged Antique Dresser Gets a Gorgeous Victorian Gothic Makeover For Only $53 (Or Less!)

What a fun restoration this was! I have never done a victorian OR gothic style piece before and this one was BOTH! You'd never guess that the end result is the same piece that I started with. It only cost me $53 in products INCLUDING my brushes and non-power tools.
The way this project turned out reminds me so much of the whimsically haunting things that @ChristineHMcConnell does. If you haven't heard of her, you might get a real kick out of seeing her art! She can make anything look whimsical. Even food!

Desert DIY, have you ever done white gloss stencil on white matt?
Chris Donna at Bella Renovare uses a stencil with gloss poly so it’s the same color but a different sheen and it looks awesome.
I've seen pink on pink, but the black on black is just so cool, more elegant than goth IMHO

I'm always amazed seeing the sad condition of pieces before they are refinished. After the spa treatment, this piece is a real beauty Cory. The subtlety if the gloss stencils is so so pretty. I just love it!!🌷🌷🌷

You did a great job. I'm always happy to see vintage and antique pieces saved from the landfill even when they are too far gone to save the finish - as this obviously was. I, too, have a few pieces that are destined to be painted. I personally prefer to save the wood finish, but obviously, that can't always happen - as with this piece. Thanks so much for sharing.

Didn't think the two blacks would contrast so well. Makes me want to try something like you did on a piece of old furniture I have. Very well done.
Thank you! Black is the best color to do this contrast with although red does pop quite a bit as well. Most other colors are less contrasting but it does still create a gorgeous "ghosted" effect. The darker the color, the more the contrast usually

Bedbugs?!! Nope! I would not touch it; it would stay right where it was. Now that DDT is illegal, there is no way to be ABSOLUTELY sure every nit and egg is dead and gone. However, pretending you didn’t say ‘bedbugs’, I like the look of the finished piece. I’m a MCM person, but for flipping purposes I know plenty of people really like this style of furniture. With the romantic goth vibes in the finished piece, it’s absolutely charming. The tone-on-tone stencilling and gold accents created a truly unique piece of furniture out of something that was surely very near a landfill must. Brava! 🖤
